Album Description
Subtitled - Without A Worry In The World. 2003 compilation featuring 22 tracks from the beat poetry pop traditionalist. BR Music.
Album Details
22 great songs from one of the most celebrated and prolific songwriters of all time. Mckuen first started in the business as a vocalist with Lionel Hampton's band. He moved on to write songs for television that were performed by the likes of Danny Kaye, Henry Mancini, the Kingson Trio and more. He composed the scores of the films "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" and "A Boy Named Charlie Brown", both of which were nominated for Academy Awards. His classical musical works are still celebrated around the world. Collaborations with French legend Jacques Brel endeared him to the other side of the pond, as well as his rich award winning poetry. Mckuen is held as simply one of the best, a true american treasure and this disc compactly collects his best recordings.
Customer Reviews:
Vintage McKuen.......2007-05-16
If you remember fondly the poetry and music of Rod McKuen from the 60's and 70's as I do, you will enjoy this vintage McKuen CD. It includes many of Rod's best..."I'll Catch the Sun", "If You Go Away" and "The Importance of the Rose"...to name a few and one, "Soldiers Who Want to be Heroes" unfortunately hits home as deeply today as it did in the 1960's. I was so happy to find this CD as my McKuen collection was on 8-track tapes :-( After listening to a few of the songs, I dug out my McKuen poetry books, lit a candle, sipped a glass of wine and sunk back into the kinder and gentler days of my youth.
The Gravel Road of Memory Lane.......2006-11-10
I am a contemporary artist and love listening to this while I paint. This CD is a wonderful compilation of Rod McKuen's work. It transports you to another place and time and some songs, particularly "I'll Catch The Sun" give you goose bumps immediately. It's a very romantic group of songs and Rod McKuen's voice is unique and timeless etched with a deep melancolia that's very endearing.
The leaflet that comes with the CD is more like a little book with a lot of fascinating reading about the "how's and when's and where's" of every song which makes it all the more interesting to listen to. A great buy! Go see my work on www.diwest.com.au
Purchased as Anniversary Gift.......2006-03-09
My husband and I had listened to Rod McKuen's Live at Carnegie Hall when we were dating. This CD is good, but not like the other (which is very expensive). We enjoyed the songs and they brought back lots of memories none-the-less.
"The Poet Laureate".......2005-03-08
This "Greatest Hites Of Rod McKuen" is a fantastic collection of his best recordings. Rod has a most "poetic" delivery as well as abilitiy to write lyric verses.
I first hear "Doesn't Anbod Know My Name" on a Kingston Trio album ears ago . . . i have alwas had a special place in my memory for that song . .and to hear Rod himself deliver his own words in music is a great treat. His voice wraps around his words and thoughts and sends them out to touch our hearts and souls. He succeeds so well on this song.
another McKuen classic is "Jean" from the motion picture "The Prime Of Miss Jean Brod" -- i first heard this song of Rod's composition by "Oliver" . . and i love both renderings, Oliver's and Rod's . . . the both evoke the lonsome feeling of being out alone in the heather, missing a lost love (lost by death? or lost by a departure perhaps) . . . and it is difficult to not tear-up a bit whenever you play this track.
Rod does an exccellent job with Gale Caldwell's "Cycles" . . a song i first heard by Frank Sinatra . . . andRod also wrote an entire album of songs for Mr. Sinatra . . two kindred souls. And Rod on collection also has his "Love's Been Good To Me" which Frank recorded on his album of Rod McKuen penned songs.
Ahhhh! and then there's the Jaques Brel song which Rod put english lyrics to: "If You Go Away" . . . i first heard this song sung by Australian songstress Lana Cantrell . . . and i fell in love with Lana and this song . . . and now i get to hear it by the man who wrote the english verses.
There are twenty-two tracks on this collection . . and every one a "keeper" . . . i'm forever glad that they are now preserved for all posterity: examples of a true artist at his best!
I thank you od McKuen for your contribution to the wonders of our musical and poetic heritage. You are "the best" . . .and this album presents some of "your ver best" so this it can touch our souls.
(ha . . and i seem to remember Rod McKuen in some "beach movies" from the early sixties . . . Rod, you certainly have experienced it all!) :)
Quite Disappointing.......2004-04-24
I have been a Rod McKuen follower since the 1970s and miss some of my early LPs that were unfortunately stolen years ago. So I ordered this CD in good faith but when I played it was amazed to hear that the sound and tempo of the songs (in my mind based from hearing them years ago) was faster, possibly to fit all the selections on one CD (I don't know). End product is a sound that is NOT romantic OR mood setting, not peaceful, rather racing through the selections to the point of annoyance. Save your money up to buy older and in good condition copies of the originals, like I am doing.

Customer Reviews:
The Words and Music are great - but McKuen cannot sing! .......2007-05-27
I love his words and the music - he has great talent for writing and creating hit songs - but he cannot sing at all. It is painful to listen to his singing. I do like the man's poetry and other spoken CDs (The Sea, The Earth, The Sky etc.) but this is not something that you would wish to listen to more than once or twice. It is not relaxing or enjoyable.
I was greatly disappointed with this CD collection - I think he needs to stick to what he does best - speaking poetry and writing songs hits for other people.
All Aboard!.......1999-02-11
As a 33 year old connoisseur of easy listening music, I'll gladly croak side by side with Rod Mckuen in a elevator to the sky. I first discovered Rod in a pickle jar at a yard sale, and for 25 cents he was mine. From out of the pickle jar croaked the innocence of a toad, and the sadness of a lost kitten. It was a simple time of lollipops, sunshine, and beautiful violins. Will you put aside your prejudices for just a moment and lend an open heart? The sweetest sounds are locked away in secret places- only to be revealed when the soul departs. In flashes of brilliance, God grants permission to just a special few- Rod Mckuen has touched the sky. Why not croak along? Authur Greenslade's beautiful orchestration will pleasantly guide the way.
Rod could write them, why did they ever let him record them.......1998-12-05
Rod Mckuen was on T.V. so much in the 60's (Mike Douglas Show) I got to hear and see him a lot. I could not belive they let him sing back then and this recording reminded me of that time again. I used to try and wisper his songs around the house when I was 12 and 13. I'll never forget the day Rod Mckuen told Mike Dougles he was singing in his car and discoverd he had come upon more vocal range? This album is Rod Mckuen, the 60's best selling poet, singing basic demo's of his best songs..... Almost everyone of Rod's songs were taken by good singers and made into very good songs. Alot of good songwriters never get to record thier own songs, this album does let us hear how the writer sings what he wrote....
He is excellent !!!!!!!.......1998-10-20
Rod McKuen is a fantastic artist. He has the ability to hold your attention, relaxes you and can put you into the world of his words.

A recording of memories........1999-05-08
I first bought this album on vinyl 30 years ago.I never thought I would find it again. It is still as gentle and soothing as I remember then. Rod McKuen's voice reaches past the words, into your mind. I never tire of listening to this.

Customer Reviews:
Rod's version of "Winter In America" is essential........2005-11-10
Rod McKuen is more well known as a poet/songwriter than an actual singer/performer but his versions of his songs are often the best. This is the fourth collection of Rod's best known works that Warner Bros. released in the late 60s/early 70s and a lot of his best loved songs/poems are included, like "If You Go Away", "Sleep Warm", "Gifts From The Sea" and "The Lonely Things".
My favorite track here was not written by McKuen but by Australian singer/songwriter Doug Ashdown. I was not familiar with Ashdown until I heard Rod's version of "Winter In America". Recorded in the early 80s, it's one of the best things McKuen ever put his voice to. Although not a Christmas song by any means, it's a part of my essential Christmas listening every year. I listen to it regularly from November to February year after year and never tire of it.
Loneliness never sounded so good!.......2001-11-30
Mr.Mckuen's music is what you need if you are the sad romantic-type!I AM
