No on can accuse Regis Philbin of not having a sense of humor. Why else would the 73-year-old raconteur/talk show host kick off his CD with an arch version of Myron and Gordon's "You Make Me Feel So Young" on his first recording in over 37 years? But despite that initial eyebrow-raising rendition, his famous ribald sense of humor and sense of absurd comic timing is absent from the rest of the recording. Instead, Philbin plays it completely straight on these rather pedestrian standards, his ragged but mightily recognizable tenor--from thousands of on air duets--often strains for notes, but his delivery is sure-footed and never coy. In fact, if you don't watch yourself, you'll feel a tug at your tear ducts during his version of "Too Ra Loo Ra Loo Ral" with renowned Irish tenor Ronan Tynan. His other coupling is with wife Joy Philbin, who will surprise listeners with her nuanced and deft singing. Although he may not be the world's best singer, Philbin does have a tonality that is not unlike Bing Crosby's and his oversized, warm personality and the elegant instrumentation of his backing combo--with guest appearance by world class trumpeter Warren Vaché--seems to make everything work. --Jaan Uhelszki

"Lush"
Album Description
Hes one of TVs most popular personalities, host of one of the most popular game shows in history, and a bestselling author, but what Regis Philbin has always wanted to do most is sing. Among the songs he croons on the new disc, produced by acclaimed producer/ singer Steve Tyrell (A New Standard, Rod Stewart), is Bings "Pennies From Heaven," which Regis performed live on at least two memorable, life-changing occasions. Once was for his shell-shocked parents, who had traveled through a midwestern thunderstorm to visit him at his graduation from Notre Dame. They were expecting to hear about the great life plans their son, who theyd struggled to put through school, had made. He surprised them with, "what I want to do with the rest of my life is to be a singer." Confronted with his parents disappointment and respectful of their sacrifices, Regis made a fateful, responsible choice he would be a talker on television.
The second time was an impromptu performance for Bing Crosby during the legendary singers appearance on The Joey Bishop Show, where Philbin was the comic's sidekick. That performance led directly to his first album, a recording for Mercury Records. It gave him a taste of the music business and led to his developing a nightclub act, but the responsibility and demands of his family and career precluded further recordings. Both a favorite song and a lucky charm throughout Regis life, hes included a new version of "Pennies From Heaven" on When Youre Smiling, completing the cycle.
Regis has performed his singing and comedy nightclub act through the years, initially opening for Steve and Eydie, Tony Bennett and Don Rickles, and then becoming a headliner on his own in the big rooms.

Great for home and classroom.......1999-03-21
No other composer so closely kept his fingers on the pulse of American thinking and gave the country so much of what it thought it wanted. "Yiddle on Your Fiddle" tells us more of the second-generation immigrants' desire to become Americanized than all the history and sociology books can ever do. So it is a double pleasure to announce the appearance of "Come on and Hear!: Early Songs by Irving Berlin, 1909-1915" and "Keep on Smiling: Songs by Irving Berlin, 1915-1918," two fantastic CDs or tapes on Oaktown label and released through a friendly little Connecticut company calling itself Original Cast Records. Between the two sets, you have 41 tracks of the Berlin output from "Everybody's Doing It Now" to "We're on Our Way to France." The soloist is Benjamin Sears, who with pianist Bradford Conner has something of a reputation around the Boston area. Now some of this material is duplicated by the more widely known Joan Morrison on two RCA Victor releases, possibly out of print by now; and like those discs could use another voice now and then. (Conner does join in where a duet is called for, but my point remains.) Sears is a capable if not an outstanding baritone, who does justice to these historic expressions of Americana. So not only do I recommend both of these sets for their enjoyment value, but I wish to continue to point out to Social Studies teachers how valuable sets like this would be to classes who have no concept of how people really felt (as opposed to what they merely said and did) "way back when." And I might even stick out my neck so far as to offer to come to any school (in reasonable distance of where I live) to give a sample lesson on how these sets can be used.

Wife very happy.......2007-03-08
I purchased this cd as part of a Valentine gift for my wife and she was very happy with it. The service from Amazon was very good and the package arrived without any problems or damages. Thank you.
Another vanity effort by a non-singing star.......2006-11-02
Regis Philbin cannot sing...let us not mince words here..This album appears because Philbin is a big teevee star, and not because he can sing his way out of a paper bag(indeed, one listento his breathless vocals..and I, DO mean"breathless,as if he is on the verge of a heart-attack, should be convincing enough)..indeed,singing his way out of a paper bag would probably be more entertaining than listening to the way he butchers some great tunes...His old side-kick,Cathy Lee Gifford, can sing, but her rather chilly personna tends to preclude any real mega-success as a singer, especially as her career since leaving Philbin and daytime teevee has been minimal..Philbin is charming, has had success both on daytime teevee and with "Who wants to be a millionaire",and thinks that these attributes earn him the right to inflict yet another "celebrity-who-cannot-sing"album onto the listening public...This is an album for diehard Philbinites only..
Love it!.......2006-06-08
I absolutely love this CD. If you like Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin then you will also like this. Someone said in one of the reviews that Regis can't sing. I feel that is totally not true, what are you a music teacher?
Anyways, buy w/ confidence that you will enjoy this music.

I love you, Regis, but ..........2006-01-25
Sorry, but you can't sing.
You couldn't make it on American Idol.
Outstanding!.......2005-11-24
I also give Regis 5 Stars for his second album in 36 years as n-
ew Pop And Jazz Singer! He croons just like The Late Bing Crosby
when he sings most of his songs like It Had To Be You on his Wh-
en You're Smiling CD which was released on Hollywood Records la-
st year! So Regis keep up the good work and you could be the g-
reatest like Johnny Mathis!!

Their duets together can only be described as Fantastic and something it seems that only the heavens could have thought of in blending these two Consummate Singers Voice's together!! Bing was at the very top of his form as far as in his Vocal Quality! And Judy's Concert Style Voice was already being developed when they recorded these originally Live Radio Broadcasts!! Two Wonderful Singers in their prime, who could ask for anything more??
This CD includes a compilation of songs that Judy Garland sang with Bing Crosby on his Very Early 50's Radio Shows in which she made frequent Guest Appearances... In fact, these Great Radio Appearances Judy made singing with Bing and Show Stopping Solo Numbers Judy also Performed on Bing's Radio Show which are included as well on this Great CD, is what gave Producer Sid Luft(Judy's Husband) the idea of starring his very talented wife Judy Garland in One Woman Concerts!! So these Radio Appearances by Judy after she had just recently been dismissed from her Movie Musical Days at the MGM Studios was what kicked off Judy's Second Career as a Very Successful Concert Singer. Alot of Judy's Solo Signature Songs are also included on this CD as well as some Rare Songs which Judy Masters as only Judy Can!!!
My very favorite among the Rare Numbers that Judy Garland Performs Solo on this CD, is a song entitled, "You Belong To Me" She gives her Emotional 'ALL' to this particular song!! Judy also sings an Adult Version of her very famous song, "You Made Me Love You" which the Live Audience's Applause and many Excited Whistles of admiration at the end of this number- says it all!! I believe this is the only time Judy Sang the Adult Version of this song entitled, "You Made Me Love You" She also does a Different Version of her Famous Concert Tune entitled, "When Your Smiling" which is great fun to hear! And Judy does a rather Rousing Solo Performance of "Alexander's Ragtime Band" which I for one feel is her Best Performance Ever of this Great Song...
My favorite musical song picks on this CD that Judy&Bing Perform Together are as follows: "How Could You Believe Me When I Said I Love You When You Know I've Been A Liar All My Life" Which is an amusing tongue and cheek type of song done expertly by both Judy&Bing! Another Duet Number I really liked is "Hello Ma Baby" Also- an often time Comedic Medley which includes songs entitled, "Boise,Idaho" "Blue Boy" and "These Lush Moments" Judy Garland & Bing Crosby's timing together when performing these Song Numbers is Excellent!! And they both have such feeling and personality in their voices that all the wonderful songs on this CD are a Great Pleasure to the Ears!!! Another duet song number that Judy&Bing do particularly well together, is the rather Beautiful Tune entitled, "April In Paris" and you can really hear Judy's Powerful Concert Voice during her part in this Great Number!!! The only complaint I have about this particular song, is that it was much too short!
Of Course, the absolutely Crowning Moment of this CD, is when Judy performs her endearing last Musical Number which is her song, and her's alone--"Somewhere Over The Rainbow" It's so interesting to hear when she sings this Wonderful Song- the Young Judy Garland Voice mixed with the more Mature Judy Garland Voice when she performs this Terrific Number on this Live Radio Show!! It is Simply Magical!!!
This is an Incrediable CD of songs, and if you don't have this very entertaining CD in your collection as yet, your truly missing out on a Very Pivotal Chapter of Judy Garland's Great Career!!! I personally had a smile on my face all through the Great Song Numbers that were so generously included on this- 'One of a kind' 35 Song Set CD!

This recording is by far Russ Peterson's most uplifting release to date. A very upbeat combination of clarinet and accordian provides a swinging treatment to these wonderful American Standards.
