A Walk in the Park
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Even as a roomful of female jazz singers have eclipsed her in terms of recognition and popularity, Dena DeRose is hardly a well-kept secret. A singer and pianist of uncommon intelligence and musicality, she is a darling of numerous critics. But A Walk in the Park, her MaxJazz debut, should endear her to a much wider audience. The first of her albums to showcase her in her most natural setting, the trio. It captures her easy intimacy and assertive charm in a way that her previous efforts haven't. DeRose recalls Shirley Horn in the way she makes her piano playing a seamless extension of her vocals. But she's considerably more animated than that beloved artist, here roiling the keys to spur bassist Martin Wind and drummer Matt Wilson and there making judicious use of trills and scat effects and a catch in her voice. The songs range from smartly turned out rarities like Al Jolson's "All My Love" and Duke Ellington's "The Lonely Ones" to freshly voiced standards like "All the Way" and "How Deep is the Ocean." John Lennon's "Imagine," which is too stunted harmonically to ever make it as a jazz standard, is a misstep, but it's the only one in an otherwise flawless performance. --Lloyd Sachs

A Walk in the Park - Dena DeRose.......2007-02-17
Dena DeRose has both the voice and style in her piano playing which are pleasant and easy to listen to. The music "Meditation" has always been my favourite and Dena blending of her voice with the piano notes played added colour to the music. Her rendition of "How Deep is the Ocean" offers good jazz tempo without deviating from the way Irving Berlin had written the music. The music "All the Way" has a good rhythm with voice harmony and the piano playing is very pleasant.
Other than another singer Gaynor Ellen which I have heard Dena DeRose has the most melodious voice for jazz music.
The album will certainly please jazz fans looking for some variety in jazz music.
Hear Ye, Hear Ye - Ignore that 2-star review.......2006-08-25
Folks, if you want to take advice from someone who edits out the parts of songs he doesn't like, and only gives 5-star review to Xmas songs & gospel, go right ahead.
If you want to hear a briliant jazz pianist who also sings well(like Diana Krall, but hipper, jazzier, and more musical), then give Dena Derose a try.
This CD features her in a trio setting, without horns. So there's plenty of room to display her formidible piano chops as well as her pleasant voice. Highly recommended. (Also check out her CD, 'I Can See Clearly Now'. Another good one!)
Make that 4.5 stars please.......2006-02-24
The playing, singing, and particularly, the writing are generally excellent. The minor deduction was for the Ellington tune (The Lonely Ones) which I thought was not up to the level of the other tracks and the Lennon (Imagine) that just doesn't work for me. I hope that there will be a purely instrumental offering in the future.
DeRose is a female Nat King Cole!.......2005-09-04
I could quite easily pontificate for five or six paragraphs on the startling, brilliant music that Ms. DeRose produces, but just listening to this album (or her earlier, "I Can See Clearly Now") says it all for me. As a pianist, she synthesizes elements of Red Garland, Ahmad Jamal and Bill Evans into her own personal style; as a singer, she has in my view the clearest, most attractive and best-controlled voice since Ella (though her style is not the same). She sings with a clear, bell-like tone, attacking notes cleanly and with greatly varied swing even in ballads, ending her phrases with a terminal vibrato. Her "trick" of singing with her own improvisations is brilliant - an extension of the similar work done by bassist Slam Stewart in the 1940s and `50s.
Dena DeRose is the modern, female equivalent of Nat "King" Cole. It is indeed a shame that the music and entertainment worlds no longer have room for someone this talented and lacking in superficial attractions (gorgeous looks, wardrobe malfunctions, dancing with her thumb in the belt of her pants a la Britney Spears) to make a big name for herself.
If you enjoy not only Nat Cole but also Garland, Jamal and singers of the quality of Connee Boswell or Mavis Rivers, these CDs are for you.
"Intimacy & Assertive Charm" - Another Winner.......2005-07-16
I have never read less- than- stellar reviews any where on the net of Dena and her albums including her latest-- but the two reviews in here. Critics of renown - all acclaiming Dena's superlative talent - voice and piano and arrangements. Dena's assertive piano style perfectly balances her crystaline voice. A Walk in the Park, I think is her strongest album yet, perfoming in her first piano trio format. Dena has assembled a bit of an eclectic group of songs that range from Ellington's "The Lonely Ones" to John Lennon's iconic "Imagine." Also included are also several DeRose originals that prove her more a formidable composer and singer than many of her peers -- Diana Krall, Norah Jones, etc. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this eclectic album and all her previous offerings. Listening to this album was like being at her concert which I recently attended. Many of these songs were introduced at her sold-out concert,

Customer Reviews:
Grimethorpe is Never Grim!.......2001-01-19
West Yorkshire in England consistantly produces eight to ten of the best brass bands in all the world. The Grimethorpe Collery Band's "Melody Shop" demonstrates why this band is always counted among the finest. This particular CD offers the listener a wide variety of musical tidbits. For the lovers of classical music, Grimethorpe's rendition of the Galop from Rossini's "William Tell" will certainly put you in that Lone Ranger mood!(This piece was heard in the movie "Brassed Off" with Grimethorpe providing the soundtrack for the fictional Grimley Band featured in the movie.)For 70s fans, the band does a hard-charging version of Jimmy Webb's "MacArthur Park."
There is even a hymn on the CD. Barrie Gott's "Lightwalk" (from the old hymn tune "Walk in the Light) actually comes out of the Salvation Army Brass Band literature. I doubt that most listeners ever heard a hymn swing like this one!
My personal favorite is the cut of "Lohengrin: Act 3 Prelude" by Wagner. It is hard to believe that this is a brass band- and I mean ALL BRASS- playing with such fire and technical accuracy. What a group! What a piece! What a wonderful combination!
If you own no brass band CDs, this is a good place to start a collection. It listens "easy," has some tunes you know, and is consistantly entretaining.

Customer Reviews:
extremely poor re-mastering.......2004-12-21
I listen to many (re-mastered) historical recordings. Jeanette MacDonald is certainly one of my most favorite sopranos. For some reason, I haven't been able to find a decent, or even acceptable, re-mastering of her recordings.
While this one certainly contains many valuable tracks, the re-mastering is horrid. The songs sound stripped yet still maintain a great deal of distracting noise. I conjecture that the re-mastering was done simply by increasing the bass and decreasing the treble.
An excellent CD!.......2004-03-29
This is an excellent collection of the Screen Sweethearts of the 30's, Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, *not* singing together, in the 40's (except for a few of Jeanette's songs).
For Jeanette, it has numbers from Up In Central Park: Carousel in the Park, It Doesn't Cost You Anything to Dream, Close as Pages in a Book, Fireman's Bride, The Big Back Yard, When You Walk in the Room. She and Robert Merrill sing these together and on their own, and very charmingly, too. There are also Love Me Tonight, Isn't It Romantic, and Beyond the Blue Horizon.
For Nelson, he sings music from The Student Prince with Rise Stevens: Golden Days, Drinking Song, Deep in my Heart Dear, Serenade (which is BEAUTIFUL!), Just We Two, and Come Boys. He also sings all the songs from Northwest Outpost - thankfully, without Ilona Massey! Also, the Willie the Whale segment from Make Mine Music is on this CD - just as it is in the movie, with the narration and everything - it's great! (The Tristan und Isolde part is not included, however - not sure what the reasoning is behind that.) He also sings a duet with Jane Powell - Why Do I Love You? from Show Boat.
I say this is a must for fans of Nelson and/or Jeanette, not to mention Rise Stevens!
I particularly enjoy "When You Walk in the Room". It's a charming little tune, with ridiculous but adorable lyrics! "Fireman's Bride" is very funny also - Jeanette barely sounds like herself!
I hope this will help others to choose this CD - it's a pity there's not a list of the titles here!
Nelson Eddy on CD - always a pleasure.......1998-08-30
It's always a pleasure to find Nelson Eddy's wonderful voice on CD and this one has some of the harder-to-find pieces in it, including collaborations with Jane Powell and the wonderful mezzo Rise Stevens. The recording of "The Whale Who Sang at the Met" is a must for any collector as are the excellent recordings (better than on the movie) for "Northwest Outpost". The baritone singing opposite Jeanette MacDonald also has an excellent voice (though his name temporarily escapes me)

if you want a Lodger album buy Mr.Bowie's
Supergrass Junior.......2004-04-20
When I lived in Los Angeles a decade ago, I was really into this band Apache Dancers. Imagine, if you will, and Franco-American combo, with a young Hank Williams, with a sidekick of Edith Piaf. This band did exist. In a time of John Doe & Exene, and nothing has been done since? Minimal Compact? Ten years pass, and finally we have a new dynamic female-male duo called Lodger. With a lot of camp, burlesque, and range, Lodger becomes so many things. On certain numbers they could be Roxy Music on their best day, or a Pulp, and other times, only themselves. Pearl Lowe is a wonderful singer, especially on the closer "Safe." Neil Carlill is very expressive when he sings on "This Girl's In Love With Me" and "Love is The Game." Danny from Supergrass also plays drums in this band.
