Barry Manilow Live [Live]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
For anyone who was disappointed by Barry Manilow's 1997 tour, here's a suggestion: If it's camp you're looking for, 1977's Barry Manilow Live from 1977 delivers what you missed. Here Manilow drives home every schmaltzy hit of his early career with absolutely no apologies. The years hadn't given him the self-awareness he now displays. On Live, he sings his kitschy love songs with all the earnestness of Johnny Mathis. Two of the CD's standouts, however, are medleys drawn from American Bandstand and commercials. (Manilow started his career as a jinglesmith, composing themes for Dr. Pepper, Band-Aids, and State Farm Insurance, not to mention singing "You Deserve a Break Today" for McDonald's. Manilow sings his jingles as if he were trying to land them in the Top 10. --Steve Gdula

Customer Reviews:
I'm so glad to hear the complete show for the first time!.......2007-02-25
This was one of the first albums I owned (I was 7 when it was released). This one's responsible for influencing a life-long love of live recordings. I'm glad the complete show is here. I still have the vinyl copy, but now I've got a complete CD as well! What a great recording!
Well worth re-buying this gem !! .......2006-11-23
I certainly agree with Brenda Maskunas, the last reviewer, concerning this wonderful re-issue ... As a die-hard Manilow fan, I'm not one to buy and re-buy if I don't need to. But based on Brenda's review, I decided to try this item and what a treat it was!
The new cuts which were not on the original issue of this concert was just like having Barry back again in his 30's with the same young voice and style. This concert was MANILOW AT HIS BEST ... young, just starting out, a fresh voice ... the Manilow I got hooked on back in the 70's ...
This re-issue is well worth buying again if you are a big Manilow fan from the 70's and miss hearing his younger voice ... I love whatever voice he has, but it sure was good to hear it young again!
Splendid Album--His Best.......2006-11-05
This is Barry's best album I've heard. The original album is great, and the special additions are even better. Definately worth the $.
Still One of the Best Live Albums Around.......2006-08-09
The recent addition to the Manilow collection, a remastered version of the Live album originally released in the 70's, is a welcomed and recent purchase. I admit that I originally had this album, yes..."album", and really wore it out from playing it so much.
Barry is at his best with his original back-up singers Lady Flash. You can hear the enthusiasm and just pure joy that they all have by performimg live. I have seen Barry perform live many, many times. Although he is still the ultimate entertainer, he really shined during those years, especially when we were in the midst of the "Disco" era.
The fun of the original album is still here including the now dated "VSM", and most of us who have been his fans for years still enjoy his former commercial jingle medley. The additional tracks restored make this a CD to have in your collection. It is like having an old friend return after many years. You wonder why you were ever apart.
Sweet Heaven! Whaddahfantasticalbum!.......2006-08-05
Early Manilow from 1977. Did I need ANOTHER Manilow album? YES!!! This 2 CD collection of 23 tracks of love, beauty, peace, fire and passion is truly awesome! It has been remastered and the sound quality is excellent. If you listen carefully, you can even hear Barry's Brooklyn accent in some of these early versions.
There are many songs that I have not heard before on my other Barry CDs. The love and tenderness in the classics, like "Could it be Magic/Mandy, Trying to Get the Feeling Again, This One's for You, and Looks Like We Made It" is unbelievable. As beautiful as they are in Barry's later versions, they were slower and far more passionate in this CD. If you could bottle the passion, you could maybe change the world.
"V.S.M." is a totally cool collection of commercial jingles that Barry wrote. Bet you'll be surprised at some of them; I was. "Let Me Go" is Barry belting out the Blues. "The Lady Flash Medley" is a great 70s rock medley done by his musical support ladies.
Songs like "Riders to the Stars" and "Why Don't we Live Together" really rock, and appear to have a slight gospel flair to them! "Jump Shout Boogie Medley" is over 8 minutes long and includes some wild jazz. "New York City Rhythm" is always hot. These songs have such fire in them that the inside of the car went up 20 degrees when I was playing them! Barry must have been bopping all over the stage doing these numbers. It's hard to even LISTEN to them sitting down. Made me want to jump right out of the car and dance at 60 mph, but I restrained myself as a courtesy to the other drivers.
I am running out of CD players to play my Manilow collection, but, I must say it again: another staple for the Manilownian! (and worth EVERY penny!) (Guess I'll have to buy another CD player.)
(I'll tell you a little secret here, too. S-h-h-h-h. Don't tell anybody, but I have been using disc 1 to power-walk with and have lost 35 lbs in 6 months--and, no, I don't lose weight easily.)

41 Tracks--YES!.......2007-04-12
This CD is the same as the "2 Nights Live" CD--even same little 24 page booklet, chocked full of photos. There are 2 CDs, totaling 41 tracks, from the 2002 Tour! Whaddah great buy! These 2 CDs give you 5918 minutes on CD 1 and 5981 minutes on CD 2, totaling 11,899 minutes of listening time! (Hey! Check it out! 5918 vs. 5981. What's the odds of that happening again!?)
The song selection is great! An outstanding set of 2 CDs, 41 musical arrangements. The Gonzo Opening medley is 7 minutes, 6 seconds long and includes "Ready to Take a Chance Again," "Daybreak", and the eternally sexy "Somewhere in the Night". Although I LOVE then ALL, my favorites on this album are "We Live on Borrowed Time, Harmony, Turn the Radio Up, Let Freedom Ring, Sweet Heaven, Whose Been Sleeping in My Bed" (I rev up my metabolism on this one every morning before I get in the car--terrific beat), "Every Single Day" (beautiful story behind the song. He wants to get married and she's not so sure--what if we make a mistake?), "They Dance", and "Old Friends."
I absolutely LOVE "Turn the Radio Up"! You almost never hear this one and it's so appropriate for today's world. "Turn on the music!...When I feel that this old world is just too hard to bear. . .people comin' at you left and right...Turn the radio up. Turn reality down...Turn the negative down...Worryin don't do ya no good. Throw your cares away..don't give in...out with the negative. You find the positive way. Too much talk about blues all over town..."
There are just sooooo many great songs here--"Can't Smile Without You, Mandy, Even Now, The Best of Me, Weekend in New England, Copa, and many more. You can see the whole 42 song list at Amazon, above the reviews. If you don't have many Manilow CDs, this is certainly a great collection of his songs in one album.
Just such a terrific collection of songs, and all done so well. Worth every penny.

Did you think we wouldn't notice?.......2006-07-26
People at the record company or whatever you call yourselves today, I grew up in the 70s. I owned the original Barry Manilow Live TWO record set. The head execs who thought we wouldn't notice that half the concert is missing were very much mistaken.
I will never buy this CD because I know that some of the best music was cut. Why not turn this into a two disk set and let the fans enjoy the entire concert. The orchestrations are missing, that was some of the best parts.
When you release the FULL version of the concert, I will buy it. I want my children to know what good music is. This hip-hop rap garbage is ruining our society and I want my children to know what quality music is all about.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Kate, Chicago
Barry Manilow - Live.......2006-03-19
Fun to hear. Reminds me of my mom playing this albumn a lot when I was growing up.
The best live album of barry!!!.......2006-03-10
During my 10th birthday in 1977, my dad gave me Barry Manilow LIVE. It was a double record(Vinyl). I played it over and over again. My favorite tracts are THIS ONES FOR YOU, WEEKEND & ITS JUST ANOTHER NEW YEARS EVE. To me, this Live album of barry released in 1977 is his most beautiful album ever. Its raw, romantic, & a joy to listen to. I wore out my original record so I now have a cd version of Live. Though the cd release is not complete, Live will always be one of my favorite Barry albums ever. It won't dissapoint. MAGNIFICO!
They butchered this album on CD.......2005-03-07
I too, loved this 2 album set. They butchered this album when they put it on CD. LIVE means that, live. They took out all the bantering Barry did with the audience, his talk of his jingles, everything. That effects the whole character of the album, plus they took off 'Beautiful Music'. What where they thinking? It was a number one seller as a two album set, why wouldn't we love it on 2 cd's? Can we get this re released in its total form? I'd buy it in an instant.
Incomplete - Disappointing.......2004-09-30
If you own the 2 LP Album, please be warned that the CD isn't complete. Much missing. I loved the album very much and wore out my copy, so I was psyched to see that this came out on CD. I immediately bought it not even thinking that it wouldn't contain everything the LPs did. That is why I titled this review "Incomplete - Disappointing". Don't get me wrong, though, if you have never heard the LPs, then you won't be disappointed. This is a great recording, just wish it was the same as the LPs.

"Royal Rockin' Barry".......2007-03-10
Recorded live at The Royal Albert Hall, London, in 1982(?), this is a great collection of 12 foot-stompin' mainly high-energy song tracks and great versions of those songs, totaling a wee bit over 58 minutes. I would have LOVED to be at this concert! Man!--You can feel the energy over the CD. The music is crystal clear, too. Excellent quality. I'm guessing the actual concert ran an additional hour (like Barry's concerts generally do) and I wish the CD was longer and included the whole concert. (Arista Records--can you take care of this please???)
"It's a Miracle" runs 5:50 minutes and includes a little ode to London built in to the middle of it--cool--nice tribute--classy.
"The Old Songs Medley" runs 10:05 minutes and includes "The Old Songs" (duh), "I Don't Wanna Walk Without You" (one of my favorites--sounds like a little dance steppin' in this one by Barry), and "Let's Hang On" (high-energy), and back to "The Old Songs" for a finish to the medley.
"Even Now" runs 3:46, always beautiful and always sad. (I'm with someone else but I still think of you--concept)
"Stay" runs 3:42 and is a duet with another male singer I've seen in a Barry London video. Beautiful song. (We used to. . . Stay with me tonight and I'll make everything all right.)
Beautiful Music runs 7:01 and includes "Beautiful Music, I Made It Through the Rain",and ending with "Beautiful Music".
Bermuda Triangle runs 4:38 and sounds just like The Islands. It is a fantastic calypso version, complete with steel drums. I LOVE it! (Concept is a guy goes to Bermuda with his girl and she disappears with another guy. So, Bermuda Traingle "very bad". Barry even sticks a "woe is me" in there. Cute. Chitty chats with audience after for a sec. Says he must look like a little singing nose to those at the top rows of the Hall)
Break Down the Door runs 5:31 is high energy and includes "Break Down the Door (duh, again), and Who's Been Sleeping in My Bed." By the amount of applause this must have been even more awesome in person, but it was great on this CD.
Copacabana runs 3:53 is always great. As the eternally classy guy he is, Barry thanks his musicians and singers for their hard work during this song.
Could It be Magic/Mandy runs 5:41. Guess what songs it includes? Do I need to say it? Come on now. Beautifully done, as always. Barry's Signature Songs, along with Copa. Lots of applause here, too.
London We'll Meet Again says it runs 6:06, but don't think so, unless Arista cut some of it. Anyway, another ode to London to include the tune "We'll Meet Again." The master showman includes the audience in singing with him and they LOVE him in London! My God! The applause is super!
One Voice runs 2:53. I read somewhere that Barry said this song came to him in a dream. Beautiful song--beautiful concept. Must have been a beautiful dream. (It starts with one voice--singing in the darkness--then other voices join in.)
It's a Miracle runs 1:49 and ends the CD and the evening. Barry concerts usually seem to begin and end with "It's a Miracle" and a few notes of "Could It Be Magic".
I vote for "Sir" Barry, anytime, and this great CD! The more I play it, the more I LOVE it! The more I love it, the more I play it. It's a vicious cycle. H-E-L-P ME!!!
Barry's in the Hall!.......2005-03-10
I've seen the video from which this album was made. The only thing that kept me from giving it 5 stars was the holdback on the material that they chose to inlude on this CD. "Nickels And Dimes", "Ships", "If Should Love Again", "This One's For You", "Sunday Father" just to name a few along side his dialogue were left out. These were essential to the concert's flow. I don't mind that "Can't Smile Without You" was omitted. They can shelve that one til dust covers it to the point of barely visible. (I think I hear some women growling at me. Let them. It's a bad song whether studio or "live".)
He pours his heart out still in "Even Now" and in "Stay". This is what Barry is great at. Ballads. I must give credit to Kevin DiSimone and James Jolis on "Stay". They accompany him on the song not as two guys singing with him, but as two guys who have the same thought and it's pure coincidence. Why they left out "I Write The Songs" is beyond me. It's a sin. Barry on the video sets it up, "Aren't you tired? Here's to you, gang, here's to you. We've got one more." So warm. I won't drop a star down. "One Voice" leads into the "It's A Miracle" finale. Good enough. You would do yourself well to find this and the concert that was taped just a scant 3 or 4 months before this in Pittsburgh, PA. (The Barry Manilow Concert). It's the best video I've ever seen. E-Bay vendors unearth these things.
Include more songs.
Manilow Magic Stikes Again!.......2003-06-13
I really like this one, then again I like live performance anyway, but this one is really nice.
YOU HAVE GOT TO GET THIS ONE!!!!!.......2001-01-10
I owned the recording of this Barry Manilow shortly after it was released many years ago. During one of our moves, I lost some of my albums, and did not think I could ever replace this one. I was so disappointed because I loved every song that was on it. I looked for it so many times, but thought it was not released again. Last week, I was on Amazon, just going thru Manilow cds, etc., and could not believe my eyes when I saw that it was out on a cd. I could not wait to get it. I have it, and it is even better than the first. ALL the songs are great----I love the tribute he does to London, plus all the other great ones, but to top it off is his rendition of "We'll Meet Again", and has the crowd going crazy, and singing with him----then my very favorite "One Voice"---- this is soooo beautiful. This has to be a favorite for all Barry Manilow fans, and when you hear this one, you will all be fans!!!! Thank you Amazon!!!
An Excellent Live Compilation!.......2000-05-22
Barry gets his London fans on their feet as soon as he makes his appearance onstage to the "One Voice" intro. A nice mixture of romantic melodies and hand-clapping rhythmic tones keeps this CD in balance. "We'll Meet Again" is a very moving song similar to his "Best of Me" song from the Boxed Set, creating a high mood of atmosphere. "It's a Miracle", the final track, is toe-tapping nonetheless and a great ending to the CD. Highly recommended not just to any Manilow fan, but any pop or adult contemporary fan!

This CD is the same as the "Ultimate Live" Import CD--even same little 24 page booklet, chocked full of photos.

I absoulutely love this 2 Nights Live 2-CD set. I don't care what music critics have said about him. I don't care what anyone has said about him (inluding my husband!). The guy is a genius. One picks up every now and then on TV, radio, - "commercials" written decades ago for goodness sake that we all know by heart-written and arranged by Barry Manilow when he first started in the "business." And of course he moved on...way beyond. He is not just a stellar studio musician (please buy the previous "Barry Manilow Live" with this track, entitled "Studio Musician" - one sometimes needs to be reminded of the incredibly great studio musicians (like Barry once was); those guys and gals, whom we will never know even insofar as their names). In addition, Barry is a brilliant arranger, composer and perhaps most endearing of all a spectacular entertainer. So at ease with the audience-full of laughter, humility, and loyalty to his fans (as evidenced by this 2 CD set). You simply won't believe how intimate and funny he is throughout these 2 mights LIVE while delivering some of the greatest music ever. One of the happiest moments for me was seeing his "come back" via this tour - Barry really did prevail over his music being played in elevators and dentist's offices. Oh - and as a Jersey girl, we were raised not to care what anyone thinks. We think for ourselves like Barry Manilow-as a downtown, hometown NYC guy.
I'm a Fanilow!!.......2005-09-08
I saw Barry Manilow in Las Vegas in August. I was not a big fan but was happy to see him. Seconds into the concert, I was hooked!!I am madly in love with this CD. The first CD he sounds a bit horse to me, but by the 6th song, he is his fantastic self. The second CD is plain FABULOUS! If you love Barry, don't miss this set!
"Outstanding Concert by Manilow".......2005-04-05
I saw Barry Manilow's concert at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia on October 9, 2004. This was the first time I had seen Barry Manilow perform live, although I have been an ardent fan of Barry Manilow since 1972(his early years). The following week after seeing the Manilow Concert I decided to purchase the audio cd entitled, "Barry Manilow, Two Nights Live." When the cd arrived in the mail, I immediately played the
first disc on my home stereo system. It was amazing! The audio
cd was an exact replication of the concert I had seen at the Wachovia Center. The audio recording was superbly engineered and produced. "Two Nights Live," was recorded at the PNC Center for Performing Arts located in New Jersey.
Each cd is exactly one hour of fantastic melodies and lyrics
as only Barry Manilow can achieve. All of Manilow's hits and then some are included in this two cd set. Make sure that you listen to the cd's in proper sequence, otherwise you will be missing the thrill and excitement of feeling like you were seeing Barry Manilow in a live concert.
Barry Manilow is now performing exclusively at the Las Vegas Hilton. I feel priviledged to have seen Manilow at one of his final concert tours in my area. Everytime that I listen to the audio cd, "Two Nights Live," I am reliving the excitement and glory of this talented entertainer, musician, vocalist, and dancer once again. I have many live performance audio cd's, but none can compare to the stellar performance of Barry Manilow's, "Two Nights Live."
Not His Best Live CD .......2004-09-15
I've been a Manilow fan since the first single in the 70's and he's my favorite musician. Having seen him numerous times in concert and considering him a fabulous live performer, I pre-ordered this CD and awaited it's delivery with great expectation.
So it brings me great pain to be unable to give him 5 stars. I listened to the CD several times just to make sure my initial impression wasn't wrong; sadly, it confirmed it. It has to be hard to sing the same songs for 20+ years and I know Barry once said he didn't want to become one of those people who go through the motions. To his credit, he hasn't - and that may be one of the issues I have with the CD. Through the years, he's always mixed it up in concert and given new arrangements to the songs and vocalized them differently and I guess maybe that kept them fresh and enjoyable to perform. Most of the time, they were enjoyable to hear. However, in this CD, some of the old favorites are sung in a way - sometimes in talk-sing (shades of Neil Diamond) that I yearned for the original rendition. To my surprise, he just didn't sound in good voice on some songs - and I've never heard him sound anything but great in any of the concerts I've attended.
I can't help but wonder why they didn't release the A&E Live by Request Concert or the make a CD out of the Manilow Live show (released in DVD format) he did a few years ago - both were fantastic and would have made a superior CD and more accurate depiction of his voice and live performance talents, in my opinion.
All that said, there are more good songs than bad. Some of the songs are performed wonderfully and capture him as anyone who has seen him live has heard him.
If you're looking for a comprehensive collection of Manilow music, I'd recommend The Complete Collection - the boxed set. While you may miss the music of a few of the years that came afterward, it's got every song he released up to that point and a number of tracks you won't find elsewhere. "Barry Live" is a great live album, even if it's earlier in his career - it more accurately captures his voice and the vitality of his live performance.
Bottom line, the performance of the songs isn't even and just doesn't do Manilow justice. It's not his best, but even at less than his best, he's better than most.

It Takes That One Voice - Indeed!!!.......2003-07-24
This album is so incredible, uplifting and charming in its presentation of the magic that is Barry Manilow. I am still looking for the DVD of the concert but for now I'm content with my imagination and the wonderful score of this drift down memory lane and through the life of Barry Manilow hits presented on Broadway.
His voice is still top notch and it sounds like energy is just exploding off the stage as he takes us back to his early days and through the rows of hits. He reminds us of when we were young singing and dancing in front of the mirror, dreaming of what we could be in his number about being a backup singer in a group like the Supremes or Gladys Knight and the Pips, and then reminding us that it takes that one in one hundred that makes it through auditions, humbling us, but then making us, most of the 99 who never "won" feel like we are the ones who make the difference in the world by presenting an example of determination that helped the "1 in 99" make it to the big time.
You just can NOT be depressed listening to this album, no matter how much you may believe Barry Manilow sings about nothing other than depressing love songs. This album will lift your spirits and remind you of your youth, in more ways than one. Get it!

Sweet Heaven!.......2006-12-07
I TRIED so hard to resist this album. You would have been proud of me, but, after a while, I gave in to the pressure. Well, it kept popping up whenever I opened up amazon.com. So finally, I gave up and bought it. It's not like I needed yet ANOTHER Manilow CD!
Wow! A wee bit under 1 hour 8 minutes, this is one awesome CD! What a sweet collection of songs! It has a lot of high-energy arrangements within it, and some slow pretty songs too. The title "Live on Broadway" might leave you thinking these are broadway tunes. If that thought turns you off, not so. This is a really cool Barry concert. One of my favorite Barry CDs.
"Sweet Life/It's a Long Way Up¨ was playing when I was thinking about someone in my family who is not well. Just as I was feeling a little weepy, the words came through ".. ..Keep on pushin through the darkness.. ..fight a little harder.. ..push a little more.. ..don't give up¨ mentality. It was sung in the context of perseverance, in trying to go forward in the music business, but it certainly fits a myriad of situations. One of the things I LOVE about Manilow music is that there is so much positive feeling and so much hope in many of the songs that Barry puts out there. Those simple words snapped me out of where I was. I didn't want to be there anyway, but had briefly slipped back into human frailty.
"The Gonzo Hits Medley¨ is a cool collection of all your Barry favorite "familiarlows¨, TONS of them. This track alone is worth getting the CD for. Barry tells you at the beginning that "someone wrote him that they got engaged over this medley, so maybe you'll get engaged tonight. If not, maybe you'll at least get lucky!" This high-energy mega-medley ranges from "One Voice, I Write the Songs, I Don't Wanna Walk Without You, Somewhere in the Night¨ to "Let's Hang On, Bandstand Boogie, Some Kinda Friend, New York City Rhythm, Copacabana¨ and many more in between. I mean, this medley ranged from beautiful to Cookin! I had to divert off the Interstate this morning and go through the stinkin' city traffic. Well, let me tell you, I just sang my little heart out with this Gonzo collection. Before I knew it, I was at work. Gonzo lasts a wee bit over 22 minutes by itself and it is just fantastic!
There's some intermittent chit-chat from Barry here and there and some songs I've never heard before. There is also a neat medley called "Up Front¨ in which the background singers do Diana Ross and Gladys Knight & The Pips type songs with Barry singing backup in the background. It's really good. "God Bless the Other 99¨ is a great song about how 1 in a 100 go for an audition and actually GET the job, but God bless the other 99 who don't get the job. It's a song about how you learn much from your non-successes, (I don't like the word "failure") and how you should keep on going and don't give up.
There's also an upbeat version of "It's a Miracle, different than the upbeat version on several other CDs and DVDs. This CD finishes with a beautiful rendition of another of my Manilow favorites "If I Can Dream" (previously performed by Elvis). I can't believe I picked this up for a song. It was Dirt Cheap! But, Sweet Heaven, I'm in Love Again now that I have it!
So, lemme tell you, I got "lucky," just by grabbing up this CD! (I'll work out the other part myself :-)
I don't usually like live albums..........2005-08-30
... but this one's pretty good. The sound quality leaves a little to be desired, but it's okay. Barry's got a great sense of humor, and the Gonzo medley is worth the price of the album.
Manilow Live!.......2003-06-13
This one will keep your toes tapping and your fingers snapping and there is always lot of laughing, singing, etc...you get the picture.
I was There!.......1999-11-30
I will never forget the night they were recording this album in Chicago. It was a magical evening. I was a small town girl, new to this large city. When Barry's tickets went on sale, the lady asked which ones I wanted. "The best, of course!" My night of wonder began as they led my sweetie and I to front box seats! It was the first and only time in my life that I felt like a true princess. Mr. Manilow never sounded better and this album (opps - CD) envelops every powerful feeling each song was meant to mean. I have never liked "live" recordings, this is the exception. As always, Mr. Manilow's songs will delight, move and inspire...
This album is a therapeutic mental health commute special.......1998-11-13
Schmaltz is real! Perhaps the real charm is that the performance feels real! It's fun!
Perfect for a sing-along, especially in the car. Great percussion keeps you tapping, singing, bouncing, and smiling.
The gonzo medley brings back years of memories for a Manilow fan.
This album features a great variety of music and styles. It never fails to make me smile. By the time I arrive home, I've forgot the crazies and frustrations of work.
