Singer Monica Mancini's tribute to her father Henry's music is well-crafted, apparently good-intentioned, and thoroughly unexciting in its tastefulness. Floating in a sea of orchestration, she delivers song after song about a "Crazy World" in which "The Days of Wine and Roses" too quickly pass, but she holds her head up and follows "Anywhere the Heart Goes"--including, and especially, to "Dreamsville." A perfectly acceptable album of its kind, Monica Mancini thankfully escapes the aura of cash-in that surrounded Natalie Cole's record of her own dad's signature pieces. That that's the most praiseworthy aspect of the attempt, however, is hardly enough to make listening more than a chore. --Rickey Wright

WHERE ARE THE ARABESQUE AND TOUCH OF EVIL THEMES?.......2006-06-27
I actually bought this to have the two tracks from THE THORN BIRDS ,so i was not disappointed. However, instead of having THE PINK PANTHER THEME and the PETER GUNN THEME, which are on all previous MANCINI bests of,it would have been nice to have the ARABESQUE and TOUCH OF EVIL themes which belongs to the ultimate collection. It is hard to judge this record, especially if you are a die hard fan like me.Like MORRICONE and BARRY,HENRY MANCINI is a legend who i think deserves a 2cd set only for his instrumentals works alone. The best MANCINI sampler on a single disc for me are ALL TIME GREATEST HITS VOLUME 1 ,which includes 3 titles not compose by him and THE MUSIC OF HENRY MANCINI, which includes wonderful renditions of his songs from ANDY WILLIAMS,JOHNNY MATHIS and PATTI PAGE.Look out for those two.
Great Mancini.......2006-03-02
Judging from the reviews, it looks like the only good thing about the Steve Martin Pink Panther remake is the music. It reminds the public again of what a wonderful composer Henry Mancini was. More proof is this CD.
I agree mainly with the reviewers Connie and Julian Blackwood who say it is a wonderful CD that perhaps has too much of his lovely daughter's singing in the latter part of it. But the bulk of the tracks are wonderful with Moonriver and Dreamsville my favorites.
Incredible big band recording!.......2005-10-25
The songs of Hanry Mancini are indelibly etched in our minds- there isn't a lot to say about the tunes themselves. As you listen to 'Moon River' for the umpteen-thoudsandth time you must ask "Can his reording bring me any new perspective on the music?" The Ultimate Mancini answers with a resounding "Yes!"
The way the musicians have interpreted the songs may be charcterized as an all-out frontal attack. They give it all they've got, obviously they were turned-on and loving the experience. The sound is crisp and beautiful, the recording state-of-the-art, and the production flawless. The sound has the kind of bite you get actually sitting in a big band; it makes the decades-old soundtracks or other recordings of Mancini's stuff sound muffled and weak by comparison. You won't be disapointed with this disc.
Fantastic Tribute by Mancini's Daughter........2005-07-05
This is a truly beautiful project seen to fruition by the composer's daughter who has a remarkable singing voice and a great ear for arrangements. Apparently talent runs in the Mancini family with the ease of a deep running stream. Nice, faithful interpretations of the "Pink Panther Theme" and "Peter Gunn" are present, as well as a lovely performance of "Moon River" by Stevie Wonder and Take 6. Joey De Francesco also contributes his organ virtuoso on "Mr. Lucky." My very favorite thing on here is the theme from the Audry Hepburn and Albert Finney film, "Two for the Road," which I didn't even know had lyrics until I heard Monica's beautiful interpretation of it. Also of note is her exceptional performance on "The Days of Wine and Roses."
I only have one complaint about this cd, however, and that's how boring and lifeless the tracks become toward the end. After "Mr. Lucky," things get a bit draggy and dull. That point aside, please pick this album up if you love Mancini's compositions, because it is mostly tasteful and elegant. There is also a lovely photo on the back cover of Monica and Henry together, so you get an idea that his music is in the right hands. Without a doubt, it is.

"The Summer Smiles, The Summer Knows".......2006-01-07
"When Monica Mancini set out to record this retrospective of songs from films, she clearly had her passions in order. Monica comes by her affinity for the medium honestly, having grown up in a house permeated with some of the best film music in history, from the pen of her incredibly prolific father, Henry. So it is no surprise that this collection has all the artistry, pathos, and musicality that it so deserves." ~ Dave Grusin, Liner Notes - 2002 ~
Dave Grusin, an expert arranger, conductor, pianist, film scorer himself has described this album so perfectly. The choice of material in this CD is impeccable with Monica Mancini's graceful interpretations and not to mention the flawlessly beautiful arrangements by Torrie Zito, John Calandrelli, Michael Lang, Patrick Williams, George Doering, Ray Ellis, Harvey Cohen and John Frizzell. There are twelve theme songs from various remarkable films in this recording and most of the tracks were backed up by an orchestra with the exception of a few.
The theme song from the movie "Summer of '42" penned by the creative husband-and-wife-team of Alan & Marilyn Bergman and composer Michel Legrand "The Summer Knows" is one of my top choices from this collection. Splendidly arranged by Michael Lang and Harvey Cohen on string section, she renders this timeless song so true to its essence and making it the most beautiful version, bar none!
Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "Alfie" (from the movie of the same title), is a moving song accompanied only by the sublime piano playing of Michael Lang. She has an exquisitely beautiful voice, the kind that still shines without the trimmings and backing up of an orchestra, (the kind that still glows even on A Cappella singing). Another affecting song and a favorite of mine is "Too Late Now," a Burton Lane and Alan Jay Lerner treasure and theme from the movie "Royal Wedding." The orchestral arrangement was done by Torrie Zito, a fine pianist/arranger/conductor who worked briefly with the legendary musical icon, Frank Sinatra. I loved the way he injected a classical touch on his arrangement, almost sounding like one of Claude Debussy's masterpieces. I would say that this is one of the best tracks. Ditto with another Torrie Zito arrangement, Johnny Mandel and Paul Webster's "The Shadow of Your Smile" from the movie "The Sandpiper." Ms. Mancini gave these classics the retire-the-trophy-treatments and made them her very own.
The lovely opener, Ennio Morricone and Gregg Field's "Cinema Paradiso," arranged by Jorge Calandrelli, is also one of the standouts. Another beauty is "I'll Never Say Goodbye" from the movie "The Promise" with piano accompaniment by Michael Lang. The finale "Over The Rainbow" from "The Wizard of Oz" is simply divine with orchestral arrangement by Ray Ellis.
This recording produced by Ms. Mancini's musician husband, Gregg Field, truly showed off not only the singer's vocal artistry, but her classy and elegant style of singing. Thank you Ms. Mancini for your wonderful gift of music. Music to enjoy forever!
Magnificent Monica!.......2004-06-28
My favorite song of all time is "The Shadow of Your Smile" from the movie "The Sandpiper". Until now, the 2 best versions of it were by Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett. By FAR, this is THE best version of that song. Pure, without "vocal gymnastics", screaming, yelping or other artificial "stylings".. here it is sung as it was written, perfectly performed with beautiful orchestration. The rest of the album is no less miraculous. It is stunning. "A Day in the Life of a Fool", "Cinema Paradiso" and the haunting and tender "Theme from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" are just as lavish and well-crafted. Okay Monica, now could you release one album a year instead of one album every 3 years? Pleeeeassee??
She's chocolate and creme!.......2004-01-29
Seeing Monica Mancini on stage singing the theme from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, hearing Gregg Field's drums, seeing the multi-media film clip behind her... is like having chocolate and creme!
Monica does not belt you to death, she does not yell at you, she does not punch notes into your being... she soothes you to her, lures you, with a voice that has been hidden for years.
Her voice is perfect in pitch, tone, and her ability to hit every single note as if she were born to sing. Clearly having inherited talent from her mom Ginny and her dad Henry.
On this cd I love the way she embraces other composers songs..."Baby Mine" just one of them. I about melted when she sang that song.
She has a great sense of humor on stage, is spontaneous, and is herself.
She has a great secure personality and stage persona and she has the family roots to give you a chill in your bones when she shares them with you in stories and song.
Hearing her sing live is like being home!
Astonishing.......2003-09-04
I sample A LOT of jazz vocalists (for some reason most contemporary jazz vocalists seem to be female) but initially dismissed Monica Mancici because she's the child of a famous father. Henry was very classy and as accomplished as musicians get, and such qualities rarely get passed down the line. What a mistake. I only heard her Mercer album because it was -- thankfully -- being played in a store I was visiting. I bought it, loved it, and was primed for this collection. A solid Five Stars. There's new stuff here (for me) and old songs done splendidly. Over The Rainbow, aside from its original iconic take by "Judy," has been covered hundreds of times. And Monica's take? Quite simply as good as any. With this release I've recognized what I love about Monica's voice: Aside from being simply perfect technically, her voice glows like a crackling fireplace! I mourned the recent passing of Rosemary Clooney, and now feel that there's a relatively new vocalist who I can follow for many years. Live or recorded, I'll be there ...
Monica's Latest is the best yet.......2003-06-04
Sorry, but I don't worry about the nuts and bolts of every particular detail of an album. I play what I enjoy and Monica's albums bring me that enjoyment. Cinema Paradiso has rarely left my CD Player. I'm only sorry she appears not to have a web page. Where someone like Michael Jackson or Dixie Chicks are all over the Internet, virtually no information is available concerning Monica Mancini. It's impossible to find a concert schedule. I hope she produces another album soon, I've worn out her others.

Customer Reviews:
Monica Mancini covering an underrated songwriting team..........2007-03-29
This wonderful CD deserves a new review--even though it's been in release for over eight years now. I know there's many of you out there searching for a perfect CD that showcases songs that cut straight to the heart and celebrates the beauty of life and love in the world, despite that being a quixotic view at times. In the turbulent times we're currently living in, there's many searching for something meaningful in music that celebrates those positive things in life and what once was or will someday be again. Enter the songwriting canon of Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer...with the most definitive versions of these songs ever recorded by the one and only Monica Mancini.
In my view, Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer were the perfect songwriting pair. I compare them to the likes of Rodgers & Hammerstein, the Gershwins or any other famous songwriting team who had clear intuitive understandings of what the other one wanted in their art. Yet, you don't usually hear Mancini/Mercer mentioned as a powerhouse songwriting pair all that often today. Both carved out such amazing careers on their own, that it seems having them as a famous songwriting pair might take some focus away from their overwhelming solo careers. Obviously, both are legends in their own right just based on that and probably supersedes the idea that they were one of the greatest songwriting pairs during an era when the standards weren't fairing as well (1960's and 70's). The fact that they created timeless standards during a time when rock n' roll and the British Invasion were taking over is testament to their brilliance.
Some of the Mancini/Mercer songs on Monica's CD are more than well known (i.e. 'Moon River, 'Charade', 'Days of Wine and Roses'). Some others aren't by current generations (i.e. 'Moment To Moment', 'Loss of Love' or 'Whistling Away the Dark')--and there's plenty of songs from the Mancini/Mercer catalog that deserve to be heard more often by those who weren't around when they first came out. While I wasn't born until the early 70's, all of Henry Mancini's work (and Mercer's work) has resonated with me a great deal since childhood while both were still fortunately alive. Perhaps you can say it's songs for true romantics and those with that quixotic view of the world. Though I think most people out there have that view deep down inside...especially during times when that kind of world is desired more. If you listen to Henry and Johnny's songs carefully (especially the lyrics to 'Moon River')--you can tell they both had that same sensibility. That profound communication between the composer and lyricist is why I rank them as one of the greatest songwriting pairs ever.
Monica's voice and renditions on this CD is and are pure, heartfelt and will tug at your heartstrings. Her emotional rendition of 'Dear Heart' with acoustic guitar accompaniment is worth the price of the CD alone. I hope I can catch her in concert (she's currently doing shows with symphony pop orchestras around the country)--because she's still singing these beautiful songs live to those who are ever-increasingly desiring them. Keep making more albums like this, Monica, because you're one of the truest interpreters of your father's music today. Thankfully, her discography is growing with other albums in recent years.
One final note: Another Mancini/Mercer gem: 'It Had Better Be Tonight' (from the 'Pink Panther' soundtrack) is sung by Monica on her other CD tribute to Johnny Mercer called 'The Dreams of Johnny Mercer.' Michael Buble will be singing 'IHBBT' on his upcoming CD ('Call Me Irresponsible')--and it's a good feeling to see Henry Mancini's songs getting back into the mainstream like that, even the more party-like ones as 'IHBBT' is.
Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer are certainly missed dearly. Buy Monica's debut CD and absorb their songwriting magic they gave the world.
"Dear Heart, Wish You Were Here . . .".......2006-01-13
"It seems only natural to create a recording of my father's music. It is as much a part of me as I am a part of him." ~ Monica Mancini ~
"Dear Heart," "Moon River," "Two for the Road" and "Days of Wine and Roses" are my very favorites from one of the greatest composers of all-time, Henry Mancini. The first two are some of the tunes I loved playing on piano. Coming from a legitimate musically-oriented family, I remember when I was growing up, our home was literally filled with music day in and day out. My late parents enjoyed listening to music together and had listening sessions almost every night. My sisters and I used to hang around and listen with them. One of our many family favorites back then was (and still is) the wonderful music of Henry Mancini.
I'm so glad that Monica Mancini continued her late father's musical legacy and recorded a tribute album and dedicated it to her parents. This is her debut CD and I would say it is utterly flawless and fabulously done. The perfectly chosen repertoire is a pleasure to listen to.
It starts off with her beautiful version of Johnny Mercer-penned-lyrics and composed by Henry Mancini, my favorite "Moment To Moment," showcasing Ms. Mancini's graceful voice and impeccable phrasing. Its Bossa Nova-inspired-arrangement by Patrick Williams is so sweet and dreamy. I loved it!
Henry Mancini/Jay Livingston/Ray Evan's "Dear Heart" is simply a beautiful song and my top choice. Ms. Mancini's interpretation is so perfect and the lone guitar accompaniment by George Doering made it more enchanting.
Henry Mancini's charming music was immortalized with Ms. Mancini's fresh, smooth and impressive interpretations. There's a glow in her voice and she exudes warmth and affection to each song.
This is a great CD. Very highly recommended for your listening pleasure.
One Of My Favorite CDs From One Of My Favorite Singers.......2004-10-13
Monica's voice is just beautiful and so is the music on this CD. There isn't one bad song on it. I don't see how anyone could hear this and not love it. Monica's vocals are classy and elegant. My favorite is "Anywhere The Heart Goes" (Meggie's Theme From The Thornbirds). This song was always one of my favorite instrumentals and I never knew it had words until I heard Monica sing it. I love the song even more with the lyrics and Monica's smooth vocals. If you love beautiful music and vocals you won't be disappointed with this excellent CD.
A Magnificent Mancini.......2004-06-26
Monica re-captures the romantic and silky vocals of the past yet her arrangements and meticulous phrasing are totally unique and fresh... unlike anyone else, past or present. "Slow Hot Wind" is as seductive a cut as you could ever find. "Moment to Moment" and so many other songs here are as if I am hearing them for the first time. This is pure allure, romance and sensuality. I play this CD several times a week and always hear something new in it. In fact, all of her albums are consistantly passionate and dreamy.
This is a great singer, in my opinion, because she honors the song first. As a true classical musician performs a piano piece in the tempo and timbre as written by the composer, Ms. Mancini sings these songs clearly, giving the RIGHT word the accent or emotion to display the beauty of lyric and melody. NO "vocal gymnastics" here.... here are great songs as the composer would have wanted them heard.... and yet she gives us perfect phrasing and style to make these songs her own. Wow!
I am hoping she will make more songbooks, as Ella Fitzgerald did years ago, that honor particular songwriters. She already has Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer tributes.... how about Burt Bacharach, Antonio Carlos Jobim and George Gershwin? If Monica continues to bring her stylings, arrangements and pure class to CD, then all this and more is possible. I have faith she will. What a treasure!
OH MY GOODNESS!!!!.......2004-01-29
Hearing this woman sing "Slow Hot Wind" and "Two For The Road" is like falling into a fluffy feather pillow! What a crooner! I have yet to be disappointed in any of her cds! I even got to hear previews from the new one about to come out in March where guest singers sing Henri Mancini's work.
Monica is not only classy and talented, but she has a heart of gold and freely shares her emotions in a real way with the listener. She is like an emotional phoenix rising from the ashes and she takes her audience with her on that splendid, liberating journey of love and hope.
I love Monica and am so happy to have discovered her. Wow! A must have for your music collection. Fresh material, fresh sounds, old standards that give you chills, and more. It's like opening a brand new- old family album with a mixture of all sorts of thoughts and emotions.
I like what Johnny Mercer says on her other cd "I like a guy who writes his way and his way is so high that it starts where the other guys leave off. I've written a few like that."
All one needs to do is listen to some other writers to totally understand where this guy is coming from. I've heard some pretty hideous lyrics from broadway composers lately... songwriting is defintely suffering thusly, so is the audience. It's good to go back to good stuff and Monica takes you there. Let her!

This is a fairly good album, if not compared with an album by Nancy Wilson that contain most of the same songs "With My Lover Beside Me", the emotive quality barely makes the grade.
Swingin' Dreams of Johnny Mercer.......2006-09-05
This album is the very best of Johnny Mercer. I bought the album because I like the song "Skylark" but after listening to the CD, every song on the album became my favorite song. From "Accentuate the Positive" to "Remeber" are all great and Monica Mancini is superb. I listen to it all day long at work.
"Oh Skylark . . . Have You Seen A Valley Green With Spring?".......2006-01-04
"I was very fortunate to have known Johnny Mercer from my earliest childhood. He was a sweet and kind man and it was his laugh and smile that I most recall. While making this record, I discovered just how valuable these memories would be." ~ Monica Mancini ~
"I like a guy who writes his way and his way is so high that it starts where the other guys leave off. I've written a few like that." ~ Johnny Mercer ~
Monica Mancini's name is not new to the music world as she is the daughter of Henry Mancini, an Award-winning composer and a dear friend and collaborator of Johnny Mercer as well. The New York Times once described her voice as "the glamorous vocal equivalent to diamonds flashing." Indeed, she sings these Johnny Mercer gems effortlessly with new style, class and elegance so uniquely her own.
This recording is a tribute to Johnny Mercer and a testament that Ms. Mancini can sing even the most obscure songs penned by one of the greatest lyricists of all-time and give justice to the songs as well. This CD features not only some of the best songs by Johnny Mercer but also seven sets of lyrics that Ginger Mercer discovered after the death of the songwriter and handed them over to Barry Manilow who composed the beautiful music and finished the job that Mr. Mercer started.
To me, "Skylark," a collaboration with Hoagy Carmichael, is the créme de la créme from this collection of a dozen of wonderful songs. Her interpretation is simply superb and Michael Lang's piano accompaniment is so beautiful.
"Oh Skylark
Have you seen a valley green with spring?
Where my heart can go a journeying
Over the shadows and the rain
To a blossom covered lane..."
One of my favorites is a remarkable song and its music was composed by Barry Manilow, "Something Tells Me," its arrangement by Randy Waldman has a samba-ish flavor with the back-up of an orchestra conducted by Terry Woodson. The use of English and French horns, harp and violins made this track so endearing to my ears.
Some of the highlights include two of Barry Manilow's musical compositions - "Love Is Where You Find It" and "Just Remember." And likewise, one song which he collaborated with Henry Mancini, "It Had Better Be Tonight" (Meglio Stasera), sung in Italian/English lyrics and arranged by David Torres. The Italian lyric was penned by Franco Migliacci. The addition of maracas, timbales, congas and bongos made it so lively and bubbly.
This is one of the best-ever Johnny Mercer tributes recorded. Very highly recommended.
A Delightful Discovery... by Accident.......2004-06-28
My favorite easy listening station played Monica's "Slow Hot Wind" from her first album and I was so blown away, I bought all 3 of her albums at once. Good grief, what a discovery! Why are we not hearing more about this incredible talent? This album is haunting, unusual, brilliant and dreamy. If I could give it 10 stars I would. I can't be more enthralled with a singer than I am with Monica. Bravo!!
WOW!.......2004-01-27
I had the pleasure of meeting Monica and of purchasing this cd and all I can say is WOW!!! The entire Mancini family is an American treasure. The post office has issued a commemorative Henry Mancini postage stamp and pin, so if you're a collector, grab one. And, if you get the chance to see Monica do her Multi-media show live... TAKE IT! She injects new life into classic songs in a way no other singer could do because of her family and her own special vocal talents. Monica has a way of bringing a pure love back to the classics. It's genuine, it's honest, and it's by birthright. I love this cd because it is music that we all should own. The tunes were composed by Barry Manilow and the lyrics by Mercer, discovered by his widow. Also, the drumming work of Monica's husband Gregg Field is awesome. He's worked with such talent as Streisand and others and he sure knows how to put on a live show with the Henry Mancini Alumni Orchestra from the Henry Mancini Institute through UCLA. He is also the band director and more. You will hear some of this world's greatest young musicians on this tour and you will enjoy the show, there won't be a dry eye in the house!

Ultiimate Mancini.......2007-06-27
All songs Very well done and song, Music on the way # 17 was greatly appreciated.
Superb sound and very good performances.......2005-06-16
I've only played this in my Walkman with the headphones so far and the recorded sound quality is just excellent, some of the best sonics I've heard on a disc - and I'm just talking about the CD layer - I can only imagine what the hi-rez version sounds like. As for the music, the special guest appearance by Stevie Wonder on harmonica and backing vocals by Take 6 on "Moon River" is a major high point on this collection (it nearly made my eyes water - just beautiful). Also, "The Pink Panther Theme" is pretty much as good as the original version with the original sax man reprising his performance - great job, Plas! If you're a fan of Mancini's music, this collection is pretty much essential or if you're looking for a good title to get into 5.1 surround music, you could do a whole lot worse than this hybrid SACD disc. One minor complaint: there are too many tracks here by Monica Mancini. Although she's a really great jazz-styled vocalist, I found myself skipping her tracks before they were finished. Overall, though, I highly recommend this disc for those who love high resolution, well-recorded audio along with the bonus of classy, timeless movie music true to the original arrangements/spirit of Mr. Mancini.
Elegant sounds.......2005-05-24
Some years ago Mr. Mancini recored some CDs in Dolby Stereo. ...so it is very fitting that a tribute album to him be in multichannel SACD.
His daughter Monica and the other talented artists have made an album the way Mancini himself would have done it - elegant and sophisticated.
Not the original recordings but still an excellent disc........2004-09-02
(skip to paragraph three to skip incomprehensible ramblings)
I bought this disc on line not knowing they were re-recorded versions. Re-records thrill me about as much as reading Andrew McCarthy's autobiography. I'm not blaming any one person for creating Andrew's star stature as we're all responsible. If we didn't lay down our money at the box office we are at least guilty of standing by doing nothing while he was showered with wealth and adoration simply for standing in front of a camera and mouthing the words of other truly underwhelming scripts like Weekend at Bernie's and it's unfortunate sequel, the ingeniously title Weekend at Bernie's 2.
Sorry, but if I don't finish my thoughts my I tend to ramble on about random yet meaningless dribble.
Anyway, I listened to the Mancini disc (skipping the tracks sung by the well meaning but somewhat under pitched daughter bringing back memories of Natalie Cole's nasal renderings of once great songs) and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. The recording is top notch as are the performances. Al Schmitt did the recordings. He's still one of the best, IMHO.
Track one (Pink Panther Theme) is so big sounding. I haven't heard the 5.1 mixes (also done by Schmitt) as my surround speakers are pulling duty at the studio. This disc sounds wonderful on any system I play it on, my car, the studio, at home, in the bathroom intercom, etc...
Highly suggested SACD.
(Sorry for the ramblings. I'm trying to fight off my insomnia with some nice sleep deprivation. Starve a cold:

Wonderful Christmastime!!.......2007-01-21
Ok. I admit it. I've only heard a sample of Erin Boheme singing 'I'll be Home For Christmas" on her Myspace site. But based on that sample alone, I give it 5 stars. She has an amazing voice and sings from the heart. I wish she'd make an entire Christmas CD. This album also includes other young jazz artists like Peter Cincotti and Jamie Cullum. This is good stuff folks and now that I've discovered this CD, It's on the wish list for next Christmas.
