Standards, Vol. 1
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
While Keith Jarrett has ranged from extended solo improvisation to classical repertoire in his career, there's a special level of discipline in his trio playing with Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette, heard here in a 1983 recording that marked the beginning of this particular collaboration. All veterans of the Miles Davis group, they bring strong personalities to traditional jazz repertoire and the piano-trio form. It's the taut discipline of the standard repertoire and the level of group interaction that keeps this music interesting, with Jarrett digging deeply into the melodies and changes of the songs for strong ballad playing on "It Never Entered My Mind" and rapid-fire bop on "All the Things You Are." "God Bless the Child" is a 15-minute odyssey, a bluesy and spirited examination of a classic jazz song highlighted by Peacock's brilliant bass work. --Stuart Broomer

Great collection of songs you'll recognize .......2007-07-13
This collection is a great mixture of the songs I was listening to on the radio in my pre-teen years. But they are 1000 times clearer now, the talent of the singers is more evident and the melodies are much more enjoyable.
Song's of the great 50's.......2000-06-11
I've heard and played all of these song's from back in the 50's on this CD. Some of the greatest music of all time's came from that era. I am looking for the song's "Love Walked Right In" & "Hernandoes Hideaway" from that era. The Singer's I can't remember. If you can be of help, I am Larry F. Rees "E" mail - lfr@ee.net Thank You

When Stephane Grappelli entered the recording studio with Oscar Peterson in 1973 to record this collection of standards, it marked his 50th anniversary as a professional musician. Grappelli's most famous collaboration was of course his six-year stint in the 1930s with the Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt, but it wasn't until he started playing with pianists like Peterson that he really developed into a world-class soloist. Peterson's lush, full chords suit Grappelli's unabashedly romantic style perfectly, and on ballads like "My One and Only Love" his fiddling is lyrical, but with a melancholy depth that keeps it from descending into mere prettiness. The other musicians include bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and drummer Kenny Clark, whose supple, swinging rhythm gives the solos a gentle lift while driving them forward. Peterson and Grappelli were both old pros when they made this record, but the charm of tracks like "Thou Swell" and "Makin' Whoopee" show that even after decades in the business, they hadn't lost the ability to surprise and delight each other. --Michael Simmons

Decent recording, terrific artists..........2006-04-21
fatally marred by the cheapest cardboard CD case imaginable and stuck with Sony's illegal DRM sofwtare that installs spyware on Windows computers without your permission. (Is there any limit to these idiots' greed?)
If you can possibly find another printing of this CD, get that instead.
excellent pairing of two greats.......2005-10-01
Wonderful CD, great arrangements, beautiful melodies, excellent musicians. Backing up Oscar and Stephane are Neils Henning Orsted Pederson on bass, who recorded a lot with Oscar Peterson, and Kenny Clarke on drums. The whole Jazz In Paris series is great.
Outstanding, Elegant, Sophisticated, Classy Jazz..........2005-01-17
This is a great disc. The Jazz in Paris series is highly recommended.
Fantastic.......2001-05-02
What a great album, fans of Grappelli or Peterson will not be diappointed. They really swing on tracks 3 + 7. Peterson's piano stands out on track 5.

Customer Reviews:
Sing Keith Sing!.......2007-06-13
I can hardly believe that a jazz fan should mind additional growls and moans produced by the great instrumentalist; as someone raised on the e-e-e-e-e by Lionel Hampton or occasional Oscar Peterson's mumbling, I'm really confused how can they miss that Jarrett COMPLEMENTS his subtle playing with his vocal groans and moans?
Well, to each his own, but I think this CD is a MASTERPIECE!
If you like jazz, that is...
This is one of the all time GREATEST albums.......2006-05-29
For those of you that play jazz at cocktail parties for all your psuedo sophisticated, polar neck wearing, lexus driving friends, you will horified at the odd noises KJ makes while playing. That will be all you hear, and the album will be lost to you because you're a listener that likes the "mood" of jazz, but can't really decipher whats good from whats truly brilliant or just plain awful(for all you KennyG lovers). Your "mood' sensor will be distracted by strange noises against a backdrop of music you don't understand anyway. Too bad for you, this is definately one of the most brilliant jazz albums of all time. For those of you who are inclined to write reviews that only reveal the shallowness of your understanding, please save it. Don't even try to diss this master. Any self respecting jazz musician will, without fail, sing the praises of Jarret and the rest of the trio. Test this statement: 1 Find self-respecting Jazz Musician. 2 Ask abou the master. 3. Document results.
God Bless the Trio.......2005-12-16
Perhaps I was just naive in thinking that my own reaction would be closer to the norm, but I must say, I'm surprised and even a bit disheartened to read that so many seem to find Jarrett's vocalizations to be such a detractant.
Twenty years ago, when I first heard a Keith Jarrett album, I thought they were odd, and slightly distracting, but I very quickly got so used to them that they've long since ceased to be any distraction at all, being taken as no more than the applause at a concert or the crowd noise at a sporting event.
Indeed, they're now so expected as to be anticipated at certain moments during listening, and I smile while thinking to myself, "Ah yes, that's still Keith sure enough."
The fact is that Jarrett and his two mates have long been the tightest and arguably the best working trio in jazz, that this album was the commencement of that association, and that it contains what is quite likely the best instrumental version of "God Bless the Child" ever recorded.
Historically aware jazz fans will recall that Jarrett is hardly the first great pianist to habitually vocalize while at the keyboard---the inimitable Erroll Garner immediately springs to my mind---yet great he was, nevertheless, and so is Jarrett, being almost absurdly talented.
This album is surely no less a showcase for that talent than are several others, and I would hope more people would be able to focus on that talent and not obsess on the vocalizations, which even if distracting, are a very tiny price to pay for such virtuosic music.
he just can't help himself.......2005-09-13
My take on this CD is the same as that of several reviewers here on amazon: some striking music, almost fatally marred by Jarrett's bizarre noise-making. Jarrett has to be the most self-destructive figure in the jazz world. He behaves and frequently talks like such a complete (...) that he seems to be out to sabotage his career. I'm weary of trying to figure the guy out. My advice: listen to Marc Copland instead, a cruelly underrated pianist and a thoroughly decent person. (...)

Worth the price for sure!.......2007-03-16
I used this to provide background music for a special "Great Depression" exhibit my history students put together for the rest of the school. GREAT selection for representing the 1930s, except for a real important omission: "Brother, Can You Spare A Dime" is not on this CD and it should be. Other than that, the tunes are right on target and Kate Smith's rendition of "God Bless American" is wonderful.

A nice collection of 20 period songs that include some familiar selections such as Happy Days are Here Again, Stardust, We're In The Money, Moonlight Serenade and Kate Smith with Orchestra singing God Bless America along with 15 others. These are old recordings and a few do not have great sound quality as versions done later, but, are authentic. Amazon.com's music samples were very helpful.

Album Description
Julie's first album from 1955 set out her stall for all time, soft eroticism and single entendre, with sparse accompaniment for a late night groove that has been hard for generations to resist...with Barney Kessel's muted guitar and Ray Leatherwood's subtle bass the only sound apart from Julie's own bedroom whisper...just try to resist. 13 tracks wonderfully packaged with pics of the sultry Miss London and full of notes. Revola. 2006.
Customer Reviews:
Everyone a gem.......2007-05-07
This Album changed my appreciation of music for life. Rock & Roll with it's 3 chord 12 bar blues & 4 chord turnaround formats seemed boring when compared to the guitar playing of Barney Kessell accompanied by Ray Leatherwood on base and the superb vocals of Julie London. This is the epitome of this musical genre and nothing has surpassed it for me.
I love all 13 tracks and can see little point in reviewing each one individually. Off course "Cry Me a River" became Julie's trademark and has been immitated by many top female vocalists. Some how Julie's version remains the best.
Magic.......2007-03-31
I owned this album in the 50's, and though I always hated the cover, the voice is pure magic.

There have probably never been a singer and a songwriter as perfect for each other as Ella and Cole, and this delicious, inexhaustibly delightful album is the pinnacle of Fitzgerald's career, not to mention one of the most likeable records ever made. Porter's songs were wry, sly and as sexy as he could get away with; over Buddy Bregman arrangements that have the good sense to stay out of the way, Ella delivers them with absolute grace and wit, savoring the words' erudite jokes but integrating them into her playful, technically astonishing swing. The Cole Porter Songbook--augmented with three illuminating alternate takes in this rerelease--works as jazz, as Broadway, and as an example of what a great vocalist can do with the right lyric. --Douglas Wolk
Customer Reviews:
The best of both.......2003-02-24
If you're a Cole Porter fan and an Ella Fitzgerald fan, you get the best of both worlds here. Her interpretations of Mr. Porter's songs make this a listening delight and so darn hot!
If it's Ella, it's got to be good..........2002-08-15
What keeps me from awarding this famous album five stars? Hard to say. Price is a consideration. It is the wonderful Ella, singing the wonderful stuff of Cole Porter, but it's been selling well for more than 45 years. I think by now the price ought to drop by a fiver or so. There are a lot of great jazz records on CD from the 1952-62 era one can buy for less than this one. Second, I like the "Ella in Berlin" live album better, probably because I owned that one in high school in the 60's as my introduction to her, and it has great nostalgic value. Third, the orchestrations by Buddy Bregman, while they don't get in Ella's way, also don't make enough of a splash. This set is a bit low-key for my taste. I do prefer this disc to the one called "Best of the Songbooks", but I think Ella really comes to life either live, or sharing the recorded gig with Louis Armstrong, for instance. Let me switch five of these 16 songs for five that show up on Volume II, and I'd award that fifth star afterall.
she's the top.......2000-06-05
With the exception of Miss Otis Regrets which is too slow for my taste, these songs are all sung impeccably. The combination of Porter's incredibly witty and daring lyrics, great arrangements, and Ella's crystal clear voice and brilliant phrasing make for a great record. She may not be emotional like Billie Holiday but in my book between the purity of the voice and her timing and phrasing noone does it like Ella (for example, in Always True to You in My Fashion Ella just KNOWS that the key verse is the one beginning "There's an oilman known as Tex" so she gives it a different emphasis. The sound quality is phenomenal too.
A Truly Remarkable Woman.......2000-05-31
Wow.
Can you say cocktail music? Can you believe that the witty lyrics and word play of Cole Porter can get better? Absolutely.
Ella has a rich voice that makes you smile and slide back into your chair. Tap your glass along with your foot as she swings to Anything Goes. Her rendition of Lets Do It is simply classic.
I discovered this CD years ago and always find someone to share it with a smile. You may experience other collections more upbeat and more bouncy, but Ella comes through like a charm here.
First Lady of Song and Great American Songwriter.......2000-04-01
Ella's first album in the celebrated Songbook series done for Verve is still one of my favorites. Who could resist Ella's pure voice coupled with Cole Porter's wonderful melodies? The warmth and sweetness of Ella's voice comes through in "All Through the Night," "Do I Love You?," and her incomparable rendition of "Miss Otis Regrets." Other songs swing, such as "Anything Goes" and "Too Darn Hot." I've heard criticisms that the orchestra fails to match the top-notch arrangements of some of the later Songbooks accompanied by other bandleaders, but Buddy Bregman is no hack. The real stars here are Ella and Cole Porter. I never hear one of these songs performed without comparing it to Ella's version. This album is timeless and beautful.

Nipper's vaults are a tad sparse on music from the 1950's.......2001-12-28
I wish I could figure out the rhyme and reason as to what songs Nipper has access to and what they do not because the Greatest Hits Collections for the 50's (and 40's) are not as great as the ones for the 60's (and 30's). Go figure. Yes, there is Elvis doing "Heartbreak Hotel" and Harry Belafonte singing "Banana Boat (Day-O)," but I have not heard of half of the artists on this CD left along half of the songs. If anything this particular album leans more towards country, with "Oh Lonesome Me" by Don Gibson and songs by Jim Reeves and Eddy Arnold, and easy listening with Perry Como and Dinah Shore. Of course, most of us would be hoping for a bit more early rock'n'roll than Neil Sedaka's "Oh! Carol" and "The Rock and Roll Waltz." Instead we get Mario Lanza, not that there is anything wrong with that. As always the rule of thumb is quite simple: If there are five songs that you would like to add to your music collection, then this album is worthy of your consideration. Of course, if you were old enough to have heard some of these songs in the first place, then the odds might be more in your favor.
"Catch a Falling Star" in Real Stereo!.......2000-07-18
This CD compilation contains the only ever BMG released real stereo version of Perry Como's 1958 classic "Catch a Falling Star". For many years, RCA Victor denied the existence of these tapes, now referred to as binaural, where Perry's voice is recorded solely on one side with everything else on the other. Listening to Perry's vocal harmony with the Ray Charles Singers within this simple arrangement is remarkable . . . considering that it was never supposed to exist! RCA's release of this song, and others, subjected to electronic reprocessing to simulate stereo seems all the more ridiculous when you hear the real thing! This stereo version was also released by Time-Life within their series "Your Hit Parade" for the year 1958. "Catch a Falling Star" was the very first record certified as "Gold" by the Record Industry Association of America" and Perry received a Grammy that same year for his performance.
A wonderful way to revisit the '50s!.......2000-06-18
This Nipper's collection does a marvelous job of representing the bewildering hodge-podge of sounds that made up the popular music of the 1950s. There is mainstream pop like Perry Como's "Catch a Falling Star", mainstream country like Hank Locklin's beautiful "Send Me the Pillow You Dream On" and the early rock sounds of Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel" and Neil Sedaka's "Oh, Carol."
Mario Lanza's "Be My Love" is nearly operatic, Perez Prado's "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" represents the big band sound, and Harry Belafonte's catchy "Banana Boat (Day-O)" has a strong calypso character.
The mastering of this disc is very good and the sound quality may surprise you. The Nipper's 1950s GH discs are an excellent way to jump start a '50s collection or to just take a quiet journey back to a simpler musical time. Either way, this disc and its companion will provide many hours of listening pleasure. Highly recommended.

Nipper turns his attention to the best of music in the 40's.......2001-12-23
Having been impressed with what Nipper turned up from the 30's, I was slightly disappointed to find the pickings are not as good in Volume I of the Greatest Hits from the 40's. Yes, there is "Star Dust," Lena Horne singing "Stormy Weather," Glenn Miller's Orchestra doing "Chattanooga Choo Choo" and Spike Lee's immortal take on "Cocktails for Two," but this is the first Nipper collection where I did not recognize at least half the tracks. True, these songs were all done long before I was born, but I did a lot better than this with the two volumes covering the 30's. Young Frank Sinatra is here crooning his way "There Are Such Things" with Tommy Dorsey and "Night and Day" in an early solo effort and I do recognize most of the artists if not most of the songs. Still, Nipper's Greatest Hits is the best collection of eclectic oldies this side of Time-Life. My rule of thumb is always pick up any greatest hits album that adds five new songs to your music collection, and Nipper never disappoints by that standard.
Solid, Man, Solid.......2001-01-09
Another solid entry in the NGH series, with much cooler songs than Volume 2 of the 40s. This is a good mixture of standards (Glenn Miller's Chatanooga Choo Choo, Artie Shaw's Frenesi, Dinah Shore's version of Blues in the Night), classic novelty songs (The Hut-Sut Song and Spike Jones' Cocktails for Two), and one classic rarity that wasn't really a "hit" (Glenn Miller's Armed Forces band remake of Pistol Packin' Mama with lyrics about an eponymous bomber that need to be heard). Most of this is entertainment not art, but it is good entertainment of its time.

TALENT ABOUNDS.......2007-07-12
Take a stroll down memory lane and steep yourself in the music that defined an era. The sounds are as fresh today as they were when they were new. A great addition to any and all collections.
Capitol Records, Volume One,....The Ladies! .......2007-06-26
I bought this CD along with some of the other CD Volumes put out by Capitol Records (such as: "CAPITOL's GREAT GENTLEMEN of Song",and "Capitol Sings the Best Movie Songs", and "Capitol Sings Irving Berlin", etc....)
I have not been disappointed in any of the CAPITOL RECORDS compilations offered by Amazon.com.
All the songs are re-recorded nicely, and they sound very good---especially considering the age of some of the recordings.
These songbirds could sell a song without even trying--and that's no small feat !!!.......2007-06-16
The twentieth century gave us numerous talented ladies of song who could entertain the masses to everyone's delight. This CD provides us with a great compilation of just some of the cream of the crop of the songbirds of the twentieth century.
The CD opens with Keely Smith performing "Sweet And Lovely;" Billy May's arrangement complements Keely's silky smooth voice to perfection! Judy Garland follows with an especially sensitive interpretation of "I Can't Give You Love;" Judy's voice is in excellent form and her perfect diction enhances her delivery of this number. Nelson Riddle's arrangement for "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" shines brightly, too.
Martha Tilton sings "All Of Me" with a sensual voice that is rich, warm and vibrant. Tilton delivers "All Of Me" without a superfluous note; and the peppy arrangement by Ernie Felice works well for this number. The incomparable Lena Horne also performs "All The Way" with passion and a type of sensitivity that stuns me with its beauty.
Other gems on this CD include Sarah Vaughan's rendition of "Honeysuckle Rose;" Sarah sings this with passion, soul and all her heart. The musical arrangement makes great use of the percussion, too. Peggy Lee gives the royal treatment to the classic standard "As Time Goes By;" Peggy sings this softly, sweetly and with panache. The arrangement by Quincy Jones boasts a great use of both the strings section and the percussion.
"Them There Eyes" is performed by a young Anita O'Day on this CD; her vocals play ever so slightly with the tempo as only she could do those vocal gymnastics! June Hutton's "Dream A Little Dream Of Me" sparkles and the background chorus harmonizes flawlessly. What a romantic song! Dinah Shore sings "My Funny Valentine" with panache, confidence and thoughtful contemplation. The piano solo for "My Funny Valentine" enhances the beauty of this number--in this case, less truly IS more.
The CD ends fittingly with June Christy singing "When You Wish Upon A Star." The Joe Castro Quartet performs very well on "When You Wish Upon A Star" and June Christy sings this very romantically. It just might get you wishing upon a star for many, many more CDs just like this one, too!
The liner notes include numerous black and white photos of many of the songbirds on this album; and you get the song credits, too. I wish there were an essay but this is a minor disappointment.
Overall, any fan of classic pop vocals is going to absolutely flip over this CD. The quality of the sound is excellent and these ladies of song never disappoint. I also recommend this CD for people who like easy listening vocals, too.
Enjoy!
Reminiscence.......2002-03-03
Even if you weren't raised in the '40's (as I was) this compilation will stir your heart strings. Wonderful lyrics, wonderful tunes, wonderful songsters...just as I remember hearing them played on our old 78's.
The title says it all.......2001-09-22
Buy this CD and listen to these songs. Perfect for any mellow mood, their melodies hover in the air and create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.
Composed of the stuff of emotion and life, these classic songs will have you wanting to sing along to the familiar tunes, yet you won't dare disrupt the perfect golden tones as they wash over you.
