Stormy Monday

Editorial Reviews
From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD
In 1962, when this, his first, album was made, Lou Rawls was a singer fresh off the "chitlin' circuit" who had a few years to tough out till pop stardom. Here he wraps his rich, gospel- trained baritone around jazz and blues standards, with a swinging little combo led by pianist Les McCann underpinning his relaxed cordiality. Three previously unissued tracks unearthed for the CD, notably "Blues Is a Woman," further display Rawls's concentration and his deliberation of a lyric. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993

5 out of 5 stars Diverse offering full of laughter, love and the blues!!.......1998-12-24

This musical soundtrack is my favorite! It has a diverse offering of artists who range in vocals from a very robust and alluring tenor to enchanting soprano. The types of songs go from fun & upbeat to "somebody-please-get-me-a-tissue" blues. These selections will make you envision whatever scene/theme that is being performed and will force you to crawl into the number and savor/enjoy the fun or the blues of it.

I love it!! I believe you will, too.

We will all miss this one of a kind great voice. This CD is a must have in every jazz lovers collection.

5 out of 5 stars Lou Rawls at His Best.......2006-02-17

Lou Rawls had one of the greatest voices in late 20th century popular music. When he was here five years ago to tape a WHRO-produced PBS special with Petula Clark at Chrysler Hall, he still had the goods---the distinctive smoky-smooth baritone voice that graced hits like "Love is a Hurtin' Thing" and "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine," and gave those Garfield specials a touch of class, was in fine shape.

Three years later, though, he was diagnosed with lung cancer (he had smoked in his younger days) and last spring, brain cancer. When he died on January 6th at the age of 70 (or 72; his year of birth is listed differently in different places), he left behind a rich legacy of jazz, soul, blues, gospel and R&B deserving of rediscovery by those who may only know the hits, the beer commercials and the cat cartoons.

His passing was particularly poignant to me because I've been reading a fascinating new biography of Sam Cooke called Dream Boogie, by Peter Guralnick, in which Rawls plays a prominent role. I didn't know that Cooke and Rawls had been close friends growing up in Chicago, and that Lou actually took Sam's place in the teenage gospel group, the Highway QCs, after Cooke left to join the Soul Stirrers in 1950. They remained friends, surviving an automobile accident together near Marion, Arkansas, while traveling between gigs in St. Louis and Greenville, Mississippi, in November 1958. Though Cooke had only minor injuries, the driver was killed and Rawls was left in a coma that lasted a week. It took him three months to regain his memory and a year to fully recover.

In 1962, he began recording as a soloist in his own right. He'd been doing background vocals on his friend's records---his is the voice heard in duet with Cooke on "Bring it on Home to Me," both in harmony and in the "yeah - yeah" call and response sections of the refrain. But late on a cold January night that year, he entered the Capitol Records studio in LA with pianist Les McCann's jazz trio and laid down the tracks for his first album.

Released as Stormy Monday, it is one of my favorite jazz vocal records of all time. Hearing Rawls in such a sparse, unadorned setting is a revelation as he wraps his golden voice around the familiar words of a batch of bluesy standards. From the swinging title track and "Sweet Lover" to the blustery "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water" and the soft balladry of "Lost and Lookin'" and "Willow Weep for Me," he takes these well worn chestnuts and gives them new life. It's an impressive performance. His "God Bless the Child" is the definitive version of Billie Holiday's most famous song.

Lou Rawls would go on to become an award winning, chart topping singer during the golden era of `60s and `70s soul music. He would cover many musical bases during his 40-year solo career---his last CD was called Rawls Sings Sinatra. But for a full appreciation of his vocal magic in its prime, Stormy Monday is a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential Blues and Jazz.......2001-12-25

This recording is one of the greatest vocal sessions of all time. It puts the so-called blues recordings of today to shame. Don't be put off by Lou Rawls as the singer -- this was done in 1962, when he was only 21. Lou is brilliant -- he interprets every one of these classics with verve, originality and style in the best jazz and blues tradition. Les McCann's playing is subtle and supportive of this talented vocalist. It really is a shame that Lou wasted all of the talent that is so evident on this recording. But you will forget all of that when you listen to it! This is a classic recording which should be in the library of all jazz and blues lovers. 5 1/2 stars.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREAT JAZZ LPS OF THE 60s.......2000-05-13

A little known gem, this grand collection. I know, you're thinking Lou Rawls "You'll Never Find a Love Like This". No. This was before the commercial suits came calling, folks. Les McCann, that genius of ivory tinkling, guides young Lou through some sensuous takes of "See See Rider", and best, the definitive version of "Willow Weep for Me" for my money. This one has a piano section that is...well, sublime. Don't pass this CD up if you like great jazz piano and/or vocals. And whatever you think of Rawls milquetoast 70s and 80s output, don't be put off. He's a genius here.

5 out of 5 stars Five stars (as usual).......2007-05-12

While the last four selections listed here clearly differ in format from the tunes on the original LP, (they are from a 1977 outing and more "modern"in approach), they are excellent efforts and quite challenging. They are a bit of a departure for Burrell, whose lush and sophisticated style has no equal in recorded jazz guitar; but the latter is clearly in evidence/abundance in the tunes from the original LP. About 30 years ago a prominent jazz writer suggested that Burrell had never made a bad album. This remains true to the present day. The 1st half of this set alone is probably worth twice the price of admission. Get hip !

1 out of 5 stars Stormy Monday Blues.......2004-04-25

My initial Kenny Burrell CDs were, WHEN LIGHTS ARE LOW, & LOTUS BLOSSOM. They have made me want to hear more of Kenny's superb guitar artistry. In that regard, STORMY MONDAY BLUES is a huge disappointment. While the two CDs that I have mentioned establish an intimate late nite rapport meant to fit with sampling a smooth cognac, STORMY MONDAY BLUES falls far short of this standard! True, I enjoyed his stylings on the blues amd the four jazz standards that follow, but why on earth he would include the "contemporary" funk of the final four tracks in this album presentation is beyond my comprehension. They totally break the mood of the album and what begins as extremely listenable jazz disintegrates into pure junk! I paid almost $18 for this album and I feel that I have been grossly short changed. The Amazon web site did not afford me with the opportunity to listen to these last four numbers. If I had, I definitely would not have bought this CD. I am personally offended by the selection of the sort of music of the last four tracks of the album and it totally ruined what had otherwise been a very listenable selection of music.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Live Set.......2001-12-03

Pretty good recording of live set in France. The cd is woefully short on information. Tracks are misnamed/mislabeled and no players are listed. The only information given is that it was recorded in 1968. It wasnt. I think it's from 1971, which will be born out if you listen to Paul Pena's (yes, that Paul Pena) guitar playing. In 1968 only Hendrix was playing like that. Very cool playing, though. The addition of violin is also very cool. Worth the price for the groove on "Late Blues" (sic). For fans only but definitely interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Energetic Set from one of the masters.......2001-10-04

I bought this CD Used in a CD sale outside a campus bookstore. I was surprised to hear the energy from this group, and the sound is pretty good for a live recording in 1968. The violin was interesting - I don't recall too many Blues Artists using one in their group.

4 out of 5 stars Good live set from one of the all time greats!.......1999-04-23

Laserlight has done a good job cleaning up this set. The sound isn't perfect but still very good. The set is full of energy even though not the best version of Stormy Monday I've heard. Still, a chance to hear T-Bone live is well worth the money and I suggest this CD to anyone who is a fan!
