The Best of Tom Jones [Import] [Original recording remastered]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
Despite the killing hokiness of some of his material--"The Young New Mexican Puppeteer," anyone? Anyone?--Tom Jones has always had an ear for songs and the hefty voice to apply to them; Prince's "Kiss," with its line about watching Dynasty, was made for Jones. This umpteenth collection of his hits, otherwise concentrating on his '60s and '70s work for the British Decca label, definitively pulls together the Welshman's strong supper-club musical instincts and playful campiness. ("What's New Pussycat?" is here, of course, and on the back cover, he seems to be posing with the Golddiggers.) You want over-the-top? Over-the-top is his home, as the massively un-PC "Delilah" and "Not Responsible" remind us. One unfortunate omission: the Bacharach-David movie theme "Promise Her Anything." --Rickey Wright

Grandfather though he may be, Tom Jones still stalks the stages of the world clad in a tuxedo, the very personification of testosterone-fueled cool. Thanks to a career made mostly on the stage, where women continue to pelt him with undergarments, his image is well defined. His recorded legacy is somewhat more diffuse, though, as this set amply proves. There's torrid main-room Vegas fare such as "It's Not Unusual," "Delilah," and "She's a Lady," plus the coy "What's New Pussycat" and the bombastic Bond theme, "Thunderball." But Jones also scored, somewhat surprisingly, with country-flavored material such as "Green, Green Grass of Home" and "Detroit City." Like the other 20th Century Masters sets, this one is inferior to a previously existing greatest-hits package--in Jones's case, the 1998 Best of Tom Jones. Compared to that more generous collection, there's not enough here to get your panties in a bunch, much less make you want to wing them at Mr. Jones. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs!.......2007-01-06

A Wonderful collection of Tom Jone's greatest hits.Bought it for myself but my fourteen year old daughter swiped it !

4 out of 5 stars Tom Jones CD.......2006-03-20

Great assortment of his best hits. Brings back many memories. Great voice. Too bad he quit.

5 out of 5 stars S-e-x-y.......2006-03-16

A must for nostalgic fans who remember ole swivel hips from decades gone by. Ladies of the flower-children era, take note: "Daughter of Darkness" takes me right back to the sixties when they had full orchestras backing wonderful singers regardless of genre. "Help Me Make It Through the Night" makes me feel like a groupie. "I Who Have Nothing" is a gem that I had completely forgotten. What a voice! What a visual to the mind!

5 out of 5 stars fantastic showcase for a superb voice.......2004-09-22

Tom Jones' sumptuous, expressive voice is simply astonishing in this collection that includes many of my favorites...in fact the only Jones favorite of mine that is missing from this compilation is "With These Hands"...all the others are here: "Thunderball", "(It looks Like) I'll Never Fall in Love Again", "Delilah", "The Green, Green Grass of Home", and many more that delight the ears and give one a sense of nostalgia for the days when music like this was popular.

Tom Jones burst on the music scene in 1965 with "It's Not Unusual" written by the man who "discovered" him, Gordon Mills, and from then on, the road was paved with gold for Jones and Mills, and in 1971, Paul Anka's "She's a Lady" gave him his biggest U.S. hit.
This is a terrific compilation (with only one song I don't care for, "Daughter of Darkness"), and is sure to please the Welsh Wonder's fans.

The sound is good, and total playing time is 37'26, not including the many times I hit the "repeat" button to hear his thrilling rendition of "(It Looks Like) I'll Never fall in Love Again".

4 out of 5 stars Five years represented - a great five years.......2003-09-27

For something called "The Millennium Collection" you'd expect something...unusual. Still, we get the rare chance to get "Thunderball" included along with the other expected hits on this 12-tuner. (It seems scarce to me other than on big collections). I would not have purchased this cassette if that incredible movie theme was not used here.
Tom Jones ofcourse is one of the very few pop singers who has a *great voice* - meaning he's got pipes and he knows how to use 'em. Jackie Wilson, Roy Orbison, and Elvis (when he felt like it) could move mountains with one note, which any seasoned Opera singer could envy, but Tom sang just about every note with mind-boggling intensity. Sometimes that intensity covered a lack of emotional depth - listen to the country-based "Detroit City" or the Clyde McPhatter/Little Richard ballad classic "Without Love (There Is Nothing)" - Tom just enjoys his craft and paying homage to his forerunners. On both tunes the spoken part comes off a little shallow. But when he gets into the verse...it's forgotten.
The aforementioned "Thunderball" is a supreme example of a power ballad as perfomed by TJ. His breath control, vibrato, and phrasing is quite astonishing.
There are two purely *pop* items, the after-hours-juke-box number "Daughter Of Darkness", and the very well-known "She's A Lady", a melodic Paul Anka composition given full attention by Tom. The lyric has lost some resonance by 2000, though.
Another personal favorite is "Love Me Tonight" another quintessential "beat ballad": the build-up to the closing note is amazing.
"I'll Never Fall In Love Again" by Donegan/Currie is presumed to be based in part on the old song "Wanderin'" by Kaye and it certainly succeeds as a rewrite. (Fans dig his performance on "The Music Scene" (MPI videocassette).
"It's Not Unusual" is always fun (another footnote: dig the Dells' original on Vee Jay - "Forty Years Of Vee Jay Hits" CD box set).
And how could I forget the first Tom Jones single I bought - "What's New Pussycat". It's a big, bold statement, a rockin' waltz, full of sass and swagger. I was in my first stage as an Elvis Presley fan at that time, but El's current output had almost nothing like this. Maybe Elvis felt the same way - when he returned to Vegas in '69 there was a decided increase in his decibel level on stage. (By the way, for you EP diehards, yes, Presley's version of "Without Love" was actually better).
When it's all said and done, Tom managed to get Country and Soul noticed by the ladies in the 30+ group. And he did it with plenty of flash...and talent.

5 out of 5 stars He's a hit.......2007-03-30

A great compilation of his hits, and these are the originals. Not only do I enjoy listening to it, but my wife does, too. That means it's a really good buy.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the BEST of Tom Jones.......2006-08-22

This CD contains many classic Tom Jones songs ("Delilah," "She's a Lady," "Help Yourself," "It's Not Unusual," etc...) in their familiar and best arrangements. I previously purchased a boxed set of Tom Jones songs and was very disappointed to hear the well known tunes arranged in an unfamiliar style. The songs I knew on this album sounded just as I remembered them. The ones I'd never heard before have become favorites ("Letter to Lucille," "Somethin' Bout You Baby I Like."). Yet if you want just one reason to buy this CD, get it for Tom's rendition of, "Kiss." It'll knock you out. Yes, some of the songs he sings are campy but even his campiest songs are so much fun to hear -- and done so well. What an incredible voice ("(It Looks Like) I'll Never Fall in Love Again," "Thunderball," "Green, Green Grass of Home"). A great CD!

5 out of 5 stars Love Tom Jones.......2006-07-24

The reason I bought this was because it had Letter to Lucille and this is one of the hardest to find...anywhere!

My best friend and I love the cd.

4 out of 5 stars Captures Tom Jones' Strongest Period.......2005-04-27

Times change - and what goes in and out of style is often very subjective to the period of time we are in. While Tom did always maintain a core legion of fans - if you go back to the late 1970s and early 1980s and mention the name of Tom Jones, you probably would be laughed at. However if you went back to the 1960s, Tom Jones had an extremely devoted following. At the same time, it also seems that Tom Jones has somehow gone through a renaissance in the 2000s. People are now getting into Tom Jones again. It's not like there has been this great 1960s cultural renewal - it's just that Tom Jones music is suddenly come in today. Although this is a shot in the dark, one reason why I think that there is renewed interest in Tom Jones is because of the success that the "Austin Powers" movies had. Whatever it is, when I hear the sounds and music of Austin Powers - it immediately reminds me of Tom's music. One collection that a has a snapshot of Tom's work in the late 1960s and early 1970s is the collection, "The Best of Tom Jones".

I think there are several reasons for why Tom Jones can still have appeal in the 21st century. The main reason is Tom's unique baritone voice. Tom's vocals are some of the strongest in the music business. Whether its pop, dance - or even country and techno, Tom has always found the ability to adapt his style to many different music variants. Tom's music also has some very interesting sounds. One reason I can think of "Austin Powers" is because Tom's music and that movie's music have almost a psychedelic "pop sound". Finally, I think Tom's strength as a live performer has really helped to solidify his appeal. Tom's somewhat gregarious style on stage has made him one of the most frequent recipients of women's undergarments on stage - even today.

"The Best of Tom Jones" does a pretty good job at the content of the collection. It includes 21 classic tracks from 1965 through 1974 and also includes Tom's 1989 remake of Prince's "Kiss". I prefer my greatest hits collections to be in chronological order - this allows me to see how the artist has progressed over time. For the most part (with a few exceptions), "The Best of Tom Jones" comes pretty close to going in chronological order. One example of this is "Puppet Man" was released on the "She's a Lady" album, yet it is included after songs like "Letter to Lucille" and "The Young New Mexican Puppeteer" that were released after "Puppet Man". But for the most part, you can get a sense for how Tom progressed.

As far as Tom Jones collections go, there are most certainly no shortage of greatest hits collections. Here are some of the more popular ones:

- "20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Tom Jones": This only contains 12 tracks. All twelve of these tracks are included on "The Best of Tom Jones". This is not in chronological order.
- "Gold": This is a more comprehensive collection of Tom's hits. This is a two-CD collection containing 42 songs. It doesn't include the remake of "Kiss". It also is missing "Chills and Fever" and "Somethin Bout You Baby I Like".
- "Reloaded: Greatest Hits": A collection of 19 of Tom's hits that include duets with contemporary artists.
- "The Definitive Tom Jones 1964-2002": This is the most comprehensive Tom Jones collection out there. This is a Boxed Set that includes 93 tracks. This contains all of the songs from "The Best of Tom Jones" with the exception of "Somethin Bout You Baby I Like".
- "The Complete Tom Jones": This older collection contains 20 tracks. All of the songs on this collection with the exception of "Move Closer" are included on "The Best of Tom Jones".

Overall, while I still know there are more comprehensive collections than "The Best of Tom Jones", for the most part I was pleased. The collection offers some classic Tom Jones' tunes such as "It's Not Unusual" and "She's a Lady" (the latter is my favorite Tom song). This collection is one of the few to feature the song "Somethin Bout You Baby I Like". Although Tom did some "country" albums in the 1980s, this particular song demonstrated that Tom could actually adapt to a Country-Music style. I was also pleased by the inclusion of "The Young New Mexican Puppeteer" - for a guy from Wales, this song sure had a terrific Tex-Mex flair to it. Despite the inclusion of "Kiss", I'm a bit disappointed that some more of Tom's covers are not included - and most notably, I would have liked to see a few of Tom's live cuts included.

The liner notes for this collection are a mixed bag. On the positive side, there is a terrific 2-panel write-up that is listed as "An Extract from the Legend of Tom Jones Volume 1" This write-up basically chronicles the early part of Tom's career. I found this very informative. On the negative side, there is little in the way of credits. You aren't told when the songs were released, you aren't told about the studio musicians, the songwriting credits, and what albums the songs are from. There are also no lyrics - but with greatest hits collections, it is typical that they are not included. Overall, I'd look to see what the best value you can get for your money in terms of selecting a Tom Jones compilation. Based on this, you still may want to look at "Gold" or "The Definite Tom Jones" boxed set. However, this collection still stands solid on its own as being a Tom Jones compilation. It does a great job at capturing Tom's peak period - Highly Recommended.

1 out of 5 stars campy, very campy, but not campy enough..........2004-05-22

for me to shell out a solitary penny for these ugly tunes, liek Not Unusual. I think Jones' brand of pop singing might just be the tackiest ever, however he's so bad, that he skips over the "he's so bad he's good" stage, and skips right back to being bad. He's an icon non-theless, and if you are a fan, you'll want this

Bottom line: He's a tacky singer, but if your a tacky person, buy it

4 out of 5 stars Tom Jones Live!.......2006-02-01

Tom Jones "Live in Las Vegas" (from the Flamingo) is one of my favorite live vinyl recordings in my collection. This tunesmith's mix, on that album, of County-Pop-Soul that is backed by an equally impressive band never fails to thrill me. My vinyl copy of "Tom Jones Live" (from London's Talk of the Town) is not as great but can still be given 3 stars. I am not motivated to jump through hoops to transfer my vinyl stuff to my hard drive and then to a CD/MP3 player. Luckily this Las Vegas heavy "From Las Vegas to London" CD is now available and it combines much of the best from these two vinyl pieces of gold in my vinyl collection into one CD source. Tom is one of those performers that somehow is better "live" than in the studio. When I have been lucky enough to catch his live act I could feel his "joy of performing" in the air. His "recorded live" material exudes an indefinable excitement that is not somehow captured in the recording studio. Tom's recent cable gig (on the A & E special?) "Tom Jones - Live at Cardiff Castle" is just one more piece of evidence that my theory is correct. Besides his "joy of performing" I suspect it must be those great live rhythm and blues arrangements, added to that heavy horn section, plus Tom's blasting soulful voice that contribute to my enjoyment of his "recorded live" material. No Tom Jones fan should be without this CD.

5 out of 5 stars "HARD TO HANDLE" HAS HOT AND HEAVY HORNS!!!.......2005-06-13

Alright kids listen up! This CD has the best R&B song ever recorded just sittin' there between trax 3 and 5 like a greyhound in the startin' gate waitin' for you to set it free! Live from Vegas in '68, Mr. Jones is on stage at the Flamingo Hilton with the BADDEST bunch of horn players ANYONE has ever heard ANYWHERE at ANYTIME!! I know that's a bit bold, but I would not take the time to hook y'all up if I wurnt sure 'bout this!! This live version of the Otis Redding classic "Hard to Handle" is the finest example of what soul music is all about!! The FATTEST horns you're ever gonna hear! Someone is CARVING up the stage with that wah-wah pedal on that sweet Gibson guitar! Hammond B3 paintin' those lovely backround colors! Mr. Jones is doin' things with that voice that could easily discourage even Ray Carles, Michael McDonald, or Marvin into another line of work!! God forbid! If for no other reason than to hear R&B like it ought be done, this am the CD for you! My folks had the original Tom Jones Live In Las Vegas at the Flamingo record way back in 1969 and I wore the vinyl thinner than Tom Delay's conscience! Track 4 is textbook soul!! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars REAL RAW LIVE ENERGY from THE TIGER.......2003-01-01

This album was taken from Tom's album LIVE IN LAS VEGAS AT THE FLAMINGO and also a few tracks are from LIVE AT THE TALK OF THE TOWN. It's all live and very cool. Great to hear the between song banter with the audience and get a feel of the concert back in the 60's. He does an amazing version of "DANNY BOY" adding as Tom says, "a bit of blues to it." Also very cool version of "YESTERDAY" and "HEY JUDE."

1 out of 5 stars Don't Buy It!.......2007-05-24

This 2 CD set has a second or third tier of live performances -- not one song that you would find familiar from listening to Tom Jones. It has TJ songs he performs live with sound so poor it sounds like someone snuck a pocket recorder into a show. Also other people's songs that he sings badly, often butchering the lyrics. I wish I had read the other very negative review before I bought.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2007-04-29

Worst sound quality I have ever heard. Sounds like it was recorded by Chimpanzees. As a long time and very satisfied Amazon customer I am astounded that Amazon would sell anything this bad. I'm equally astounded as a Tom Jones fan that his organization would market this junk under his name. Amazon should offer refunds to anyone who ordered this CD and take it off their market.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Disc Which is Pure Delight!.......2004-03-02

This cd will lift your spirits from the first song right through to the end. I loved every song, even though I was listening to many of them for the first time. This is one of my all-time favorite albums. Try it, you'll like it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Sampler Disc From Important Series!.......2000-01-30

If you have always wanted to try out some of Marco Polo's British Light Music series, here is your chance, and for only pennies. This CD whets your appetite for investigating the rest of the series. At first, it seems strange that the orchestras would not be very idiomatic for this music, but the conductor makes these performances shine. There are a few favorites but many pieces that I have never heard before and are welcome in any collection. My favorites are "Sleepy Lagoon", "Dam Busters March", and "Knightsbridge March".These are by Eric Coates, the most famous person on these discs (at least to American Listeners). Fans of Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops will recognize "In A Persian Market" with the chanting "Bakseesh, Bakseesh, Allah". Arthur Benjamin is represented by the Jamaican Rhumba, his popular hit (although we need more recordings of his serious music.) Edward German is represented by one work, but it would have been nice to have the Henry VIII dances on here also. You will also recognize "Sleepy Lagoon" and "Roses of Picardy" because they were turned into pop songs in America. Try this one out-it is fun!

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Classic hits.......2007-04-02

This is exactly what was expected. An album with the classic hits from a generation of powerful voices.

5 out of 5 stars the voice that leads.......2002-12-07

Whoever taught Tom Jones to sing should receive an award. One for being hip enough to teach him timing and soulfull enough to teach him emphasis. Anyway, this is a great album. I especially like Kansas City. Tom has a way of bringing a song to life - and this one rocks! Georgia on My Mind is a refreshing change from the legend Ray Charles. The best song on the album is "Sixteen Tons". I don't know where it fell in Tom Jones' life but his fantastic rendition still has Tennessee Earnie Ford rolling in his grave! Great song! Great Collection of a living legend! My only complaint with this album is that "She's a Lady" is not included. I consider that song one of Tom's best songs and should have found its way onto this collection. In its absence, however is many forgotten classics like: Danny Boy, Detroit City, Love Me Tonight, and What's New Pussycat?". This is an album you can put on and do almost anything to. Great album.

4 out of 5 stars One of a kind performer.......1998-05-14

As I listened to this album, I was transported to a Vegas lounge, and I could picture women throwing their panties onstage! You can't help but smile when Tom Jones launches into "It's Not Unusual." A great, quirky addition to any collection. And the album photo is quite something.
