Ballads: John Coltrane (Deluxe Ed) (Bonus CD) [Original recording remastered]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
In 1962, John Coltrane found himself at the center of a storm of controversy, his tumultuous, searching music branded "anti-jazz" by one virulent critic. While Coltrane would continue along that exploratory path for the remaining years of his career, part of his response to the critical venom was to record some of the most sweetly lyrical music in jazz history. The LP Ballads established him as one of the great lyric players and set the tone for his collaborations with Johnny Hartman and Duke Ellington. The first CD presents the original album in all its luminous glory, the burnished, silvery sound of Coltrane's tenor meticulously remastered by the original engineer, Rudy Van Gelder. The second CD presents supplementary material from the original sessions as well as material that has only recently come to light. The classic quartet's collective concentration shows in seven complete takes of "It's Easy to Remember," testing its melody again and again until every gesture--from the flute-like tenor sound to Jimmy Garrison's bowed bass and Elvin Jones's triumphant drum crescendo at the conclusion--is sculpted to perfection. There are also several takes of the airy "Greensleeves" and a limpidly beautiful version of "They Say It's Wonderful" with Coltrane in duet with pianist McCoy Tyner. --Stuart Broomer

This is one of the three all-ballad albums that John Coltrane recorded in late 1962 and early 1963. Johnny Hartman was apparently Coltrane's suggestion, and his deep, dark voice meshes perfectly here with Coltrane's tenor. The material is well-chosen, including definitive readings of "My One and Only Love" and "Lush Life." McCoy Tyner fills out the chords, augmenting the harmonies and keeping the tone of these ballads respectful but not overly sentimental. All the players get to the deep structure of the songs and are not afraid to play in the most essential and elegant manner. This is beautiful jazz. --Michael Monhart
Customer Reviews:
Superb.......2007-07-14
The only reservation with this album is that is sadly very short (about 31 mins), but it's a truly marvellous album.
Hartman is blessed with as clear a baritone voice as you're ever likely to hear. There are a couple of moments on this recording where the Tenor Sax stops and Hartmans voice starts and its completely seamless.
These are all classic ballad songs, so if you're expecting long Coltrane solos forget it. This is mellow, and laid back. Think of Coltrane on the Ballads album but more so. A number of people I've spoken to over the years have used this as springboard to get into Coltrane.
The track listing is:
1. They Say It's Wonderful
2. Dedicated To You
3. My One and Only Love
4. Lush Life
5. You are too beautiful
6. Autumn Serenade
Sadly Hartman doesn't seem to have recorded much else (or its unavailable) but this album from 1963 is an absolute classic.
Essential Listening.......2007-07-04
Separately Coltrane and Hartman are great artists. Together they complement one another so much. This is a must buy.
Smooth with a capital S.......2007-02-24
I feel like I'm in the studio right along with them. What a wonderful addition to my rapidly growing jazz collection. Hartman's vocals perfectly suit the the mood of Coltrane's sexy sax. You can't beat this combination.
They Say It's Wonderful.......2007-01-26
They all say it's wonderful and, wow, it really is...
Showing Coltrane's mellow and romantic side (also seen on his "My Favorite Things"), this album brings the great and precise vocalist Hartman into Coltrane's classical band and together they create something so delicate and subtle I hardly believed it when I heard it. This means that Tyner's intelligent piano and Garrison's and Jones' unobtrusive rhytmical support are also essential for this musical triumph.
Is it modern jazz? Is it musically conservative? Answers to both questions should probably be in the affirmative; great music is often too complex to be placed in neatly divided groups...
Coltrane's tone is, I must admit, far from being among my favorite sounds in jazz, but on this album even that aspect of his music pleases me very much. He is as light and full of innuendos as the tone of Johnny Hodges, Paul Desmond and Lester Young at their most breazy and mellow, but at the same time the Trane is still strong and autoritative in creating his solos and obligattos.
If I repeat some words in this clumsy description, it is not just because English is not my mother tongue: no language can trully explain these subtle sounds and emotions; only a lyrical poem could suffice (and I'm no poet).
Just listen how Hartman merges with Coltrane and his band from the beginning of "You are too beautiful ...". A true object of beauty.
Superb Effort.......2007-01-09
Johnny Hartman is the best male vocalist in jazz. Coltrane, Tyner and the rest are at the top of their game. "My One And Only Love" makes it to the top of the list for ballads.

John Coltrane has always been best known for stretching the limits, creating titanic, extended improvisations filled with exploding, cascading flurries of notes, but he was also one of the most lyrical of musicians, capable of the most heartfelt and touching ballads. The material here is taken from his Impulse! recordings made between 1961 and 1963, drawing largely on Ballads, John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, and Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, albums that showcased his sensitive side. Coltrane's silvery sound brought an utterly new dimension to tenor saxophone balladry, a metallic clarity in which each note is given its own luster and nuance. Listening to these ballads gathered together, Coltrane seems to touch on every mood of romance, from longing to rapture to reflection, imbuing each song with an ineffable grace. His theme statements are sublimely beautiful, while his improvisations add new depths with their unique mix of strength and delicacy. "In a Sentimental Mood," with Ellington's shimmering, bell-like piano figure and Elvin Jones's animated drums perfectly complementing Coltrane's tenor, is simply one of the most memorable ballad performances ever recorded, but it's surrounded here by other gems. "Soul Eyes" is wistful reverie, while "You Don't Know What Love Is" has touches of an unsettled, passionate incantation. The tracks with Johnny Hartman are a rare meeting between a singer and a musician who are profoundly attuned to one another, with Coltrane's flutelike fills on "My One and Only Love" or his solo on "They Say It's Wonderful" conversational expansions on the lyrics' sentiments. --Stuart Broomer

Great CD.......2007-03-08
This my first Coltrane CD. I don't listen to jazz a lot but I really enjoy relaxing to this one.
Silky and Sentimental Smooth Jazz.......2007-01-07
"If I should write a book for you. That brought me fame and fortune too. That book would be like my heart and me. Dedicated to you. And, if I should paint a picture too. That showed the loveliness of you. My art would be like my heart and me. Dedicated to you."
The sensual mood of "Coltrane for Lovers" dips into sentimental beauty throughout and creates a dreamy romantic world of smooth jazz. The entire album is slightly more than intoxicating, with the feeling that you have just fallen in love and are living in some jazz haze.
Don't be surprised if you start to look for songs by Ella Fitzgerald or listening to songs with lyrics like "I think of you night and day." ;). The cover of "Dedicated to You" leads in that direction. The entire album has an old-fashioned appeal with a modern mood.
~The Rebecca Review
Milk Trane.......2006-10-25
Coltrane For Lovers is thoroughly agreeable, and highly recommended, but only for those with limited knowledge of Coltrane's oeuvre. It's a compilation, all the tracks are readily available elsewhere, so in no sense is it "essential." What's best about it is that, in addition to being a soothing audio bubble bath that brings its own candles, it may lead neophytes deeper into the ballad side of Trane, for example, Coltrane and Hartman, Crescent, and Ballads.
Coltrane was a man of incredible surprises, but the greatest of them may be his genius around a ballad - stunning contrast to the explosive "sheets of sound" that put him on the map and secured his place in history.
The folks at Impulse! - with characteristic marketing savvy - have done their cherry-picking wisely, the CD is almost an assortment of "big hits," if such a thing is possible in jazz. Coltrane stalwarts are here including McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and the amazing Elvin Jones on drums. There's also the treat of hearing Coltrane and Duke Ellington together, arguably a more historically important pairing than the much trumpeted, recently released, Trane and Monk collaboration.
Aside from Sentimental Mood, with Duke Ellington, and One And Only Love, with Hartman, the jewel that shines most brightly in this crown is After The Rain, an original Coltrane composition. (The slow descent and brooding atmosphere are reminiscent of Naima.) Tyner's piano is especially choice. After The Rain is simply one of the most beautifully evocative songs ever recorded by anyone.
One might say Coltrane For Lovers is for people who want the hipness of owning a Coltrane CD without the trouble of listening to him - the "rose without the thorn" syndrome. However, if, in the middle of making out with this music on in the background, they learn a little and are encouraged to dig further - where's the harm?
The more interesting question, or objection, is, to what extent is woozy, cocktail lounge music ideally suited to lovers? I would argue that this CD is perfect for couples in the first 6 weeks of love - while CDs like A Love Supreme, Ascension, and The African Brass Sessions paint out a more three-dimensional, passionate, and realistic portrait of love. Let's hope the neophytes dig that deep.
soul eyes.......2005-01-26
I love tis cd, it is soooo perfect for a candle light dinner with you lover. I can't stop listening to it.
Oh So Soothing.......2002-03-23
Now this Coltrane CD is a true feast for the ears. Unlike Stellar Regions, Coltrane For Lovers is soothing and filled with several catchy songs. Coltrane's saxaphone is front and center, however the piano, bass, and drums interwine very nicely. Vocalist John Hartman contributes nicely on three tracks. Its a shame there is not more of his work on this release.
The tone is pretty constant on the eleven tracks. However that is probably the only drawback. Because this collection most certainly can set a romantic mood. Pick it up and play it for your special someone. You'll certainly charm his or her heart.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
More than most tribute albums, singer Karrin Allyson's remembrance of John Coltrane makes a genuine attempt to relate to its subject--not only in retracing his 1961 offering, Ballads, song by song and luxuriating in the deep, swelling tenor sounds of Bob Berg and James Carter, but also in giving the tunes plenty of room to breathe. Resisting the temptation to dress them up with overt displays of style, she approaches them in a straightforward, emotionally understated fashion, capturing their essence with taste and intelligence. In the end, Allyson doesn't have quite enough color or depth to sustain such a long set of slow stuff (the album, also featuring Steve Wilson on soprano sax, concludes with three other ballads associated with Trane, notably his classic "Naima"). This is a singer who needs to breathe as much as sigh. But taken individually or in short doses, songs such as "Say It (Over and Over Again)" and "What's New" impart an exquisite sense of control. Allyson's radiant high notes never fail to move you. --Lloyd Sachs

Stick to the changes.......2007-03-01
I am a big fan of the Coltrane album and if you area going to pay tribute, you'd better have a good take on things. McCoy Tyner stayed somewhat close to the actual chords. Just listening to a few of the preview cuts, I was turned off by the piano player's avant gard approach. It didn't maatter how Karrin interpreted the songs, they were already ruined by all those seconds/ninths/13ths etc. in the background.
Glad I started here.......2006-08-17
This was the first Karrin Allyson album I heard. I liked this album -- her singing as well as the ensemble work -- enough to seek out more. If I had started with some of her other albums, though, I probably never would have checked this one out, and that would have been unfortunate. She sounds less forced, less self-conscious, on this album than on, say, Footprints or In Blue. She wears these songs more gracefully than on the other albums. The musicianship here is also more organic than on, particularly, Footprints, which has got to be (I hope) a low point in her catalog. Lewis Nash is one of my favorite contemporary drummers, and he turns in a typically agile yet supportive performance. The sax blowing is the hottest you'll find on any of Allyson's albums. I don't mean to damn Allyson with faint praise, but I'm glad this was the first of her albums I heard, because this is a good one.
gets the job done, but lacks something.......2006-06-03
I used to be a big fan of Karrin Allyson until I saw her live at the Blue Note (playing a double bill with Ron Carter). She is one of the most irritating performers I have ever had the unfortunate opportunity to witness. Her music is forced and showy (that really comes across onstage) and after going home and trying to listen to her albums, I've realized that her recordings are no different than her live performances. When I listen to this album, I get an uncanny feeling like she is trying to get through these songs as fast as possible so she can move on to recording another album.
Maybe I'm biased but if you want good, contemporary, vocal jazz, pick up a Tierney Sutton or Kurt Elling album.
Karrin Allyson is the REAL DEAL.......2005-01-15
Forget Jane Monheit and the other beautiful, but bland female jazz singers who are easy on the ears but offer nothing to grab hold of. Karrin Allyson is the real deal: a soulful, swinging, in-your-face jazz singer with a real understanding of the jazz idiom and the chops to hold her own with the talented instrumentalists who back her up. It's all there. The phrasing, the delivery, and a soulful rasp which grabs you by the heart and pulls you deep into the music.
She can be mellow. She can be hot. She can be smooth. And she can be raw. On this CD tribute to John Coltrane she does him proud. If you don't love this CD, then you don't love jazz. No offense to all the "pretty" singers out there, but maybe they should listen to Karrin and see how it's really done.
Has it all!.......2004-05-02
This CD has it all! Very stylish smooth vocals and fantastic musicians. It has silky smooth ballads and songs where the band really swings. The homage to Coltrane is genuine and gives the CD purpose and meaning. This is a really great jazz CD and I really enjoyed it!

FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!.......2005-06-14
A wholesale improvement in sound quality when played back in SACD mode over the impulse release. Other than some tape hiss, terrific presence and very much a "you are there" quality to the sound. Hartman was a fabulous singer and Coltrane is at his best doing ballads. If you like romantic jazz with up front vocals and sax, this is a must have disc. I own about 2000 CDs. This is in my top 10 favorites.
An absolute must for Coltrane lovers.......2005-01-01
As a saxophonist, I have been a Coltrane lover for twenty years, and have avoided any vocal contamination of his and other jazz greats' works. All of that changed when I listened to this album! The polished intensity of Coltrane's tenor sax blended with the baritone crooning of Johnny Hartman make this one of the most romantic albums in jazz (and that is saying something).
Johnny Hartman, while a star in his own right, has never has inspired me as much. And while, "A Love Supreme," released a year and a half later in 1965, is arguably Coltrane's greatest work, "John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman," is more intimate and at the same time, accessible for the listener. The struggle to describe the radiance of divinity and reverence is replaced by the more tangible themes of a human's trials and triumphs in love. If you only get one album to share with your sweetheart, this is the one to get!

In 1962 John Coltrane was under assault from conservative critics who had labeled his tumultuous extended performances "anti-jazz." In response he entered the studios to create this classic collection of both well known and obscure ballads. Coltrane was one of jazz's greatest ballad players, a fact sometimes overlooked in the controversy that swirled about his work, and his lyrical gifts are in sharp relief here. They're transmitted through one of the most beautiful tones that jazz has ever produced, suggesting a rare metal that has just been discovered. The material brings out the best in pianist McCoy Tyner, who is prominently featured and whose harmonic subtlety and limpid grace shine throughout. --Stuart Broomer
Customer Reviews:
Perfect album..........2007-07-08
This was one of my first Coltrane albums, and it's still my favorite of his. Every single note and beat played by every single player on this album is perfect and in the right place; there are no extra notes or off-key harmonics in this one; even the mistakes--if there are any--are perfect.
It was just one of those album sessions (like Kind Of Blue, Black Saint and The Sinner Lady, It's Time) where every single thing is perfect and nothing could or would be changed. (My only gripe is that it's not a double album!) That said, I don't believe there was a lot of conceptual thought going into this album--I think it was just professionals laying down a album of ballads--enough of a concept--with some of them drawn from Sinatra's repetoire (the reigning ballad vocalist of the time), whom Jazzers had been raiding for directions in standards for a few years then. The fact that there was no real pressure to make the album (indeed, the album was made to 'relieve' pressure--the pressure and mixed-press that Coltrane had receive just months earlier during his famous exploratory Village Vanguard run); this album was about musicians relaxing, in their element (the studio), and laying down some tracks.
That the album comes out perfect is the symbiotic relationship between the fairly new 'Classic Quartet'--that is where the real/only experimentation ont his album lays, in the interaction between Coltrane, Tyner, Jones, and Garrison (add holdover Workman, who, also with Garrison, is also on the spellbinding Village Vanguard stuff of '61). That this album is so effortless seeming--and it probably was for these seasoned musicians doing comfort duty--is amazing given how tight and perfect the songs emerge.
If you like ballads, you will like this album. It may just be the greatest of all jazz-ballad instrumental albums.
4 1/2 stars........2007-04-01
no sheets of sound here. no screeching workouts of aggression and twisted genius, either. this 1962 session from coltrane is just as advertised: ballads. and a great set of 'em, too. soulful, relaxed, at ease with his musical language, coltrane delivered a very fine album of late night sounds here. the deluxe edition adds a bonus disc with fourteen tracks, including 7 takes of "it's easy to remember." might seem a bit much there, but it's all icing on the cake. no complaints from me. thanks mr coltrane, wherever your soul may be soaring.
If you are having trouble relaxing..........2006-12-05
...then this is the album for you. Everytime I have a rough day at work I pop this one into my car stereo on my way home and all my troubles seem to vanish within seconds. It's the softer side of Coltrane but ooooh so sweet and tranquil. How anyone can listen to this album and not be touched by it I will never know. Tyner is amazing! If you run out of valium or xanax, then this could be your next choice. But be careful though, because it can be just as addictive!
Along with "Coltrane w/ Johnny Hartman", this is the most romantic recording JC ever produced as a leader and it is also my wife's personal favorite. I can listen to the first song "Say It (Over and Over Again)" about twenty times in a row and still not get tired of it. What an amazing quartet with Tyner, Garrison, and of course the great Elvin Jones on drums all backing up Coltrane. This is one truly is something special and anyone new to Jazz or Coltrane this would be a good place to start. If this doesn't get you hooked, nothing will.
I hope you all enjoy it!
5 Stars, OF COURSE!!!.......2006-07-17
Wow. I haven't heard my favorite Coltrane disc until now. John Coltrane had won me over with his excellent harmonic and melodic explorations over the years, but this is a nice soft turn and beautiful music for any occasion. Plus this is the type of music you can have on during other activities or listen to intently alone--both types of listening experiences work equally well with this disc. The drums seem to sit back a bit but every instrument is equally serving the song.
Elvin does get his share of soloing in, however, and the entire band is playing like they have been together for years! McCoy Tyner continues his perfect harmonizing and comping, and the rhythm of the entire band is spot-on. Jimmy Garrison continues with ostinatos and rollicking bass lines underpinning the entire ensemble. It is incredible the balance of tones that is achieved by this band.
They meld into a single unit, Coltrane's most beautiful tone pushing the songs up into the stratosphere.
If you are normally a non-jazz listener, and want to hear the best of the best, without being overwhelmed by Coltrane's normally cerebral (and seemingly self-serving, at times) soloing over a non-moving harmonic ostinato, then buy this CD. I bought the Deluxe Edition. It is great, but the first CD is the cream of the crop, although the 2nd one is very fine, and great for listening at any time. The strong songs strengthen the greatness of these guys' playing, keeps them grounded and "in the pocket."
This is not the only essential Coltrane, in my opinion, but it IS essential to have a better understanding of Coltrane's range both as a player and as a soloist. This recording and "A Love Supreme" together would make for a huge part of what defined Coltrane as a great Jazz Artist. Any serious Coltrane fan already has this, probably. If you an occasional listener or want to know more about Coltrane's more excessible, and very beautiful ballad side, this is a perfect choice.

Customer Reviews:
John Coltrane at his surprising softest and most beautiful.......2007-06-04
Thank you for publishing this cd. I know Coltrane as the wild "sheets of sound" player. On this cd I particularly enjoy McCoy Tyner, who plays beautiful lyrical lines. This is a lovely soft and beautiful series of performances.
Nothing too impressive here..........2005-05-08
When you examine this album in the grand scheme of everything Coltrane has ever done, it's not too special. Don't get me wrong...it has its beautiful moments but this is more of the kind of cd you'd listen to with a girl in front of a fire.
On the first disc, if you're a Sinatra fan, you'll get a kick out of "All or Nothing At All" and "Nancy (With the Laughing Face)," the latter of which is absolutely brilliant. The other tracks are pretty sterile for the most part. If you're used to Trane's modal stuff or avant-garde playing, this is neither. The story behind this cd, as well as "Coltrane/Hartman" and "Coltrane/Ellington" is the Impulse label wanted Trane to put out some more 'commercial' sounding music, to prove that he had it in him.
The bonus disc isn't too special - it has 5 takes of "Greensleeves" and 7 takes of "It's Easy to Remember," as well as an alternate take of "All or Nothing At All." The only new song on here is "They Say It's Wonderful" which can also be found on "Coltrane/Johnny Hartman."
If you dig slow jazz with a good amount of feeling but not a lot of experimentation then this is for you. It's not an awful album, but with a catalog as large as Trane's, there's plenty of other material that you should purchase before this.
Masterpiece Revisited.......2003-09-25
Stunningly beautiful. Coltrane plays his heart out, as does McCoy Tyner. Bonus tracks are fantastic.
Jazz Giant "Meeting His Audience Halfway".......2003-09-25
This is the John Coltrane album that I always knew was out there, but could never quite find. Beautiful, understated playing, that still maintains the rigors of his avant-garde style, without overwhelming the listener with a barrage of notes. Coltrane is in top form on these tunes, bringing his spiraling sensiblity down to an observable pace. This is the best of the trilogy of albums he did at this time, in which he spoke of trying to "meet the audience halfway, make something for the people." (The other two were the album he cut with Duke Ellington on piano, and the Johnny Hartman album.)
McCoy Tyner is excellent, and Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones keep the momentum strong. The Bonus Disc is an excellent addition, a real treasure for Coltrane fans, letting them see into the process of the construction of these classic tunes with many alternate takes. All in all a must have for Trane fans.
Demasiado.......2002-12-23

One of the finest romantic collaborations in music.......1999-05-25
Are you a romantic at heart? A wanna-be romantic? Either way you cannot go wrong with this masterful collaboration. Even hard-core left-brained music critics will be hard pressed to find fault with this album. If Coltrane and Hartman are masters of their art individually, then they really shine together. Coltrane is very laid back and relaxed and the solo tracks are so soothing you will think you are ascending to heaven. Hartman's vocals are also outstanding. In case you have never heard Johnny Hartman before (and many people haven't), you will be amazed at the clarity and resonance of his voice. And he sings with the most amazing depth of emotion; something I have not experienced since the first time I heard "In the Wee Small Hours" album by Frank Sinatra. An automatic buy for most anyone. This album is a major jazz event and I sincerely doubt it will ever be topped!
Romantic and artful to the extreme. Nothing else like it........1999-03-20
Both these artists have done excellent work elsewhere and both have had great respect for each other. This is their only collaboration, and it is a high point for both of them. Coltraine is relaxed, mellow and intellegently restrained in his phrasing. Where he is not restrained is in the depth of the emotion he puts into his playing. Nowhere is he more romantic and soulful than here. The same can be said for Hartman. His phraing is so subtle and his tone is so smooth that it is impossible not to fall in love with his sound. Mccoy Tyner backs them up on the piano with an equal amount of skill and intellegence. It is seldom that artists of this stature meet, and it is even more seldom that they work together so well. This is not a Coltraine CD or a Hartman CD or a Tyner CD. It is just a great CD, one that has no peer.
