California Girl

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This particular California Girl originally hails from Jersey City, a fact that only underscores the mythic nature of the Golden State. And make no mistake: this is something of a kitsch record, even if it doesn't quite match the scale of Sebastian Cabot Sings Dylan. A musical tie-in with Disney's California Adventure park, this theme album fairly seamlessly melds previous Cali-related tracks from the Nancy Sinatra canon with newly recorded versions of Bobby Troup's "Route 66," Bachrach's "Do You Know the Way to San Jose," Chicago's "Saturday in the Park," and even a duet with Brian Wilson on his evergreen "California Girls." If Nancy's voice has never quite benefited from the family gene pool lottery, it's developed a bit of jazzy brass and character over the years, a factor that helps recast even a melodramatic chestnut like the Mamas and Papas' "California Dreamin'" into a bluesy, world-weary lament. Guest stars like Blondie drummer Clem Burke and former Guns 'n' Roses ax-slinger Gilby Clark attempt to give the project some rock credibility, but Sinatra's take on Roy Wood's Move classic, "California Man" (inspired more by Cheap Trick's searing cover versions), and a William Shatner-worthy version of "Hotel California" only recall the Chairman's own disastrous flirtations with the medium; perhaps it's something in the genes. But when she sticks to more pop- and jazz-tinged material, Sinatra shows she can definitely sell a song. --Jerry McCulley

    4 out of 5 stars Essential history.......2007-06-24

Hooray for Pavilion Records and all other organizations collecting early recordings and transferring them to CD for the world to enjoy! Of course since they are EARLY recordings (1917-1927) it has that fizzy wax sound to it and the lyrics get mushy at times. That either makes it endearing or annoying, depending on your perspective. It's lovely to finally hear the Brox Sisters sing again, let John Steel's tenor soar, and to hear what You'd Be Surprised sounded like sung by a girl. The earliest songs of Irving Berlin may not be his best, but are a refreshing glimpse into his 30s. Half of the songs on this disc debuted in Berlin's own Music Box Revue at the theater he built after WWI.

2 out of 5 stars Makes Her Sound Bad.......2006-09-15

I'm sorry, but the arrangements/production of these songs just don't cut it. Nancy does not sound her best to me here. I barely like one song on the whole album. Nice try with a concept album about California but it sounds bland. Missed the mark for me on this one.

4 out of 5 stars A pleasant day trip to Nancyville.......2004-12-04

This is a pleasant, unassuming compilation of some songs Nancy did that have some theme relating to the State of California. Nancy Sinatra, of course, is not the singer her father was, nor even her brother, nor even as good as most of the many female singers she directly or indirectly inspired: you had to wait for Britney Spears to find a more limited vocalist of any major notoriety in Nancy's line of sponsorship.

Nevertheless, she uses what she has as well as she can, and having the name and resources she does, she's got some good musicians and studio people here, including the magnificent Clem Burke and several of the oldtimers. If you want to hear some nice songs done pleasantly you won't be too disappointed, but if you are not already a hardcore fan, this won't convert you.

5 out of 5 stars California Girl is California Gold.......2004-11-23

This is one of Nancy Sinatra's best albums. This is the perfect album to play when you want to share intimate time with your lover. If you are not a Nancy Sinatra fan, you will be after listening to this album. All songs are great on this album. My favorites are "How Are Things In California?," "San Fernado Valley," "99 Miles From LA," "Hello L.A.Bye-Bye Birmingham," "Route 66," "Do You Know The Way to San Jose?," "California Man," and "Hotel California." This album proves Nancy Sinatra is an icon on her own without her famous father. A+

3 out of 5 stars Slapdash collection of new and old material.......2003-04-15

Concept album by our Boots never really takes off, but has some great moments. With a terrific band backing her up on the new songs, I'm surprised the CD doesn't rock more(she and the guys were much tougher live when I caught the tour last June). The best song("How Are Things in California?")goes way back(it's an old 45 flip-side), but "99 Miles from LA" is hot stuff and "California Man" is a decent cover. The rest is just a little colorless. But, hey, there are a few terrific photos in the booklet to keep interest during the dull spots. B-

4 out of 5 stars Freshly squeezed Nancy Sinatra brand California music.......2002-07-12

A California theme album sounds perfect for Nancy Sinatra, most of them being cover songs. No problem, she did super on covering other people's songs on her previous albums. And I must say, most of the songs are divine slices of orange succulent to the taste.

Songs like Art Garfunkel's "99 Miles From LA" and "How Are Things In California" resurrect that 60's Mamas and Papas-like sound--"You may have the sun, the sand and the sea, but why must you be so far from me?" So does Gordon Jenkins' "San Fernando Valley," which could've fit on her first two albums. And "Hello LA, Bye Bye Birmingham" from Country My Way is included. Her rendition of the Beach Boys' "California Girls" isn't bad either, with backing vocal contributions from Brian Wilson.

There is only one not-too-satisfactory number here. The slowing down that worked on her cover of "Light My Fire" does not work on her version of the Mama and Papas' California Dreamin'." No, Med fruit flies have infested that song, so let's blow dry that into orange Tang drink mix or squeeze them for Fanta Orange soda.

The 40's jazz number "Route 66" works well, as does Chicago's brassy "Saturday In The Park." The best cover is her rendition of Dionne Warwick's "Do You Know The Way To San Jose." The cheesy standard "Hooray For Hollywood" saves this album from complete disaster. As for her cover of "Hotel California," it's okay, I guess.

Yow! She goes into classic rock-and-roll boogie woogie with "California Man" and into soft-rolling bossa-nova with "There's No Place Like Home."

In eying the CD picture of Nancy resting on an orange slice, that would make Nancy a tiptop Valencia or Navel orange.

        Album Description

Guido Deiro, the Italian-American accordion virtuoso-- frequently called "The Great Deiro"-- was of paramount importance in the popularization of the accordion in the early 20th century. The first accordionist to perform on the Vaudeville stage (1910), he was also the first accordionist to make sound recordings (Edison Wax Cylinders, 1911). For many years Deiro was a headline attraction at the great vaudeville houses throughout America and abroad, and made more than 100 recordings for the Columbia record company. On Bridge's 2-CD set, Henry Doktorski's sparkling performances of Deiro's music quickly confirm the reason for Deiro's immense popularity. In 1913, Deiro met the young vaudeville performer, and later-to-be Hollywood starlette, Mae West, while both were performing on a vaudeville show in Detroit. The couple quickly fell in love and secretly married. Henry Doktorski's liner notes detail Deiro and West's torrid love affair, and early photograph's of Deiro, provided by Deiro's son, Count Guido Deiro Jr., add to the significance of this release. Deiro's delightful compositions are a window onto an era long past, much like the re-discovery of Scott Joplin's music, twenty-five years ago.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Accordion as you have never heard it!.......2007-04-03

Guido Deiro was the first virtuoso of this much maligned and very difficult to play instrument. An accomplished composer and recording star, Deiro was a hughely popular in Vaudeville. The liner notes reveal his marriage to Mae West and I enjoyed the vintage photos. Henry Doktorski plays Deiro's compositions with great technique and every piece is a revelation of what the accordion is really capable of when played by a master musician.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Album.......2005-01-04

This two CD set is certainly worth the money. Henry Doktorski's performance is indeed breathtaking. It is as if someone were transported back to the days when Guido Deiro himself was performing these songs. Guido Deiro was a recording pioneer who he became the first star piano-accordionist, the first piano-accordionist to perform on the vaudeville stage, and to make sound recordings(I've got at least two of Mr. Deiro's old Columbia 78 RPM records at home). In fact, Guido became the first person to coin the phrase "Piano-accordion." You'll find plenty of good stuff about Guido in Mr. Doktorski's liner notes on the two-CD set as well as on the GuidoDeiro.com website. Mr. Doktorski's sparkling performance certainly does Mr. Deiro's songs justice.

I've had the pleasure to know the HB girls after I heard this CD. Its been 4 years and I still pop in now and again when I need that sort of mythical, sad-but-happy, mood in my world. Too short, thats true. Wish there was more. The second CD is good but doesnt have that same vibe going on with this one. Compare to the mood of Boys For Pele by Tori Amos (latter 1/2) but not the music. The music would best be compared to a garage version of Smashing Pumpkins Adore. You wouldnt know it but a Christian thread is there.

        4 out of 5 stars Interesting Cd.......2000-01-18

This CD is excellent, in the limited tracks that it offers. It brings many types of influencial styles together in a stew. You hear some folk, heavy metal, oldies, and hip hop in many of the tracks and are suprised by how well they meld together.

LOU CURTISS REMEMBERS…I first heard Patty Hall sometime in the early 1970s and immediately booked her for a concert series I was doing at Folk Arts Rare Records, my store in San Diego. Her original songs were clear and well put-together (still are) and she also played traditional and old-timey music. One appearance led to another, and then I booked her for the 1974 and 1975 San Diego Folk Festivals. When Patty moved to Nashville to take an internship at the Country Music Foundation in late 1975, the West Coast lost one of its musical Movers and Shakers. After a 25-year hiatus, Patty moved back out our way with new songs, more musical experience, books written (and published), and lots of life lived. She’s back playing coffee houses and concerts and in 2004 and 2005, she appeared at the Adams Avenue Roots Festival, the successor to the San Diego Folk Festival. And now she’s done this CD that’s a mix of country, old-timey, and some original songs—both old and new—with a variety of musical accompaniment and an overall presentation that’ll make you mighty glad you tuned in. Patty plays guitar or banjo on every track, and sometimes a little keyboard or percussion. She also sings some harmonies with herself and is joined by a variety of folks playing various kids of backup (you can see who they are in the song lineup). Thirty years ago when Patty left for Nashville, I figured “Well, she’ll have a record out soon,” and us West Coasters could all talk about how we knew her when. Now she’s got this new CD out, and I’m still proud to talk about how I knew her when...Recordially, Lou Curtiss
