Instead of opting for the full-on pop diva route, Cole travels a far more interesting path towards the mainstream that picks up on the vapor trails of "I Can See Clearly Now" and her album of Waits covers. "I've Just Seen a Face" retains echoes of its signature melody, but is otherwise a smart reinvention, and Sheryl Crow's "You Want More" or the slinky Aaron Davis cowrite "Timbuktu" make fine follow-ups. Typical Mancini.......2007-03-25

First, I really like Mancini's music generally and I am really concerned that he may be one of the greats of American music who will soon be forgotten if he hasn't been already. (US music schools tend to be a little snobby and don't give a number of truly great American composers their due.) However, the mix of this particular CD is simply too average. Many good songs are not on it and some weak ones are. I would not recommend this CD except to ManciniPhiles like me.

It's Hard to Believe He's Gone.......2006-05-23

Henry Mancini gave us so much of our consciousness of the 1960s and 1970s, and yet was "out" almost as soon as he was "in."

His work became synonymous with much-despised "elevator music" in the later 1960s. This stereotype (or monotype, for his earliest works) can mislead.

For example, "Lujon" [not in this collection] was used in a movie just last year to exemplify mystery and an exotic atmosphere.

Mancini dies way too young. While some would argue that he'd become a self-parody, his innate gifts compromised by relentless commercialization, you cannot take away his lasting gift to our culture. He was an original, and he captured an essence of our collective experience.

He's here in this collection, waiting round the bend, my Huckleberry friend.

En ces temps où le terme de BO est galvaudé (pénible Yann Tiersen, satanés Choristes !), cette compilation est l'occasion de rendre hommage à l'un des grands génies du genre, largement méconnu, et victime d'un des plus incroyables quiproquos de la Musique.
En effet, c'est lui qui a composé l'éternel thème de la Panthère Rose, et son mythique refrain de saxophone, définitivement associés au dessin animé du même nom, et qui invariablement provoquent sourires (voire moqueries) chez les non-initiés... Rappelons qu'au départ La Panthère Rose est un film réalisé par le génial Blake Edwards en 1964, avec l'inénarrable Peters Sellers dans le rôle principal, et que cette fameuse Panthère Rose désigne non pas un sympathique félin, mais un diamant d'une valeur inestimable, et dont le vol est à l'origine du scénario.
Mais sa contribution à l'histoire de la musique ne s'arrête pas là. En effet, on lui doit également le monumental Moon River, titre dont l'insurpassable limpidité mélodique est capable de me porter au bord des larmes en quelques mesures, repris entre autres par Sinatra et Morrissey et susurré par la délicieuse Audrey Hepburn dans Breakfast At Tiffany's. Et c'est toujours lui qui est à l'origine du thème explosif de Peter Gunn, avec sa ligne de basse à réveiller les morts et ses arrangements de cuivres qui traumatiseront toute une génération de compositeurs, Quincy Jones en tête...
En tout cas, cette compilation est une excellente introduction à l'univers de Henry Mancini, qui en mêlant arrangements jazzy, vocaux surannés et mélodies inoubliables, a tout simplement inventé la Lounge music, avant que ce mot ne désigne un vaste fourre-tout pour bobos peu curieux...

Henry Mancini's Greatest Hits.......2005-07-13

This CD is all one needs to understand why this dude is the master when it comes to composing. Having been introduced to this great human being at an early age, my fascination for his work is still a vital part of my being. This CD is just what I have always wanted. It has all the classics, along with some older gems I never knew existed. I love it so much, that I am going to send my mama back home one. She was, is and always will be perhaps his GREATEST FAN ever. If you just can't live without Mancini's music, then this CD is for you. Enjoy, enjoy,

not enough Galway.......2003-10-02

There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

It's a keeper.......2005-12-07

I bought this CD for "World seems to come and go", which was co-written by Jim White. That song has a signature Jim White feel to it. While the rest of the album is very different from the so called southern gothic genre White is often lumped into, song structures, arrangements, etc. begin to have some similarities to those of Jim White, especially on repeated listens.

Cole veers more toward jazz, and godforbid I use the words, "easy listening", but she also seems to have quite a lot of depth, and there are lots of nuances and different secrets to discover.

I had never heard of Holly Cole till recently, but I understand she's just about a mainstream household name. Don't let either "mainstream" or "household" fool you, because just below the surface, there's lots of little twisted guitars, sultry sax solos, and half whispered voices semi hidden in the mix.

This is great as background or mood music, but also great for closer listening.

From first listening, this album is immediately likeable. Her treatment of Lennon/McCartney's "Norwegian Wood" not only covers it, but redefines it. To many, though, the highpoint of the album is "Make It Go Away" (which was aired on the TV series "Due South", on which she made appearances as a club singer). Each of the titles on this album are excellently executed, giving a balance between the instrumentation, arrangement and Ms. Cole's voice. If you are going to buy one album by Holly Cole, this should be the one. You will NOT be disappointed! (Of course, "Temptation" runs a very, very close second, especially if you appreciate the songs of Tom Waits!)

So haunting are Cole's interpretive renderings that you're certain you've never heard the songs any other way. Both Joni Mitchell and The Beatles would surely find nothing to quibble over. Cole's sad and wistful little girl personae reins supreme here. The plaintive tone reverberates and reinvents the ballads.

She Makes it Better.......2000-09-08

Holly Cole's voice and words went straight through me. I never knew she existed and was introduced to the CD when traveling in a country far from home. I made love that wasn't love to this music, but it made it better. Her emotional voice and deep understanding of the songs indeed make her versions in several cases better than the originals. She doesn't have to choose between jazz and pop. She can just come in and softly claim space.

She sings a Joni Mitchell song better than Joni Mitchell!.......2000-03-02

A lovely pop album! Her cover of Joni Mitchell's "River" bests the original! A bit of a departure from some of her jazz-y work with the Holly Cole Trio, "Dark Dear Heart" is a remarkable effort. The choice of material probably doesn't give afford her the best possible showcase for her voice, but this disc will make you hungry for more of her work, past and future.

English Operetta, Beautifully Sung.......2006-10-25

For those that love operetta, most think of Vienese operettas of Johann Strauss Sr and Jr, Lehar, etc and the American Operettas of Romberg and Victor Herbert, etc. Just a bit later there was an English exponent of the form, one Ivor Novello, who was a contemporary of Noel Coward, who wrote the most glorious Romantic songs. This CD, absolutely gloriously sung is a wonderful place to start an exploration of this remarkable composer who also performed in all his shows, in non singing roles. England has through the years produced a number of wonderful sopranos who have specialized in the light opera genre. June Bronhill dominated the 1960s and 70s. Marilyn Hill Smith is her heir aparant, blessed with the most ravishing soprano, full and rich across the range, with a radiant top that rivals Joan Sutherland. Her performance of Bernstein's Glitter and Be Gay on Jay records version of Candide is one of my favorites. This CD is my favorite Marilyn Hill Smith recording. I haul it out when I have been very good and deserving of a special treat. If you are not familiar with the glorious melodies of Ivor Novello, start here, you won't be sorry.

Gathering lilacs and rarer flowers........2002-08-22

Justice is done to Welsh-born composer, pianist, actor and man of the theatre Ivor Novello in this Naxos CD. The artists who first performed them are heard in 18 items, recorded between 1917 and 1950. Ivor Novello himself is heard in two of them, providing some spoken repartee as he accompanies Edna Best at the piano. Most were recorded in the 1930s. The sound quality is good enough for the lyrics to be clearly heard. They bespeak a long-vanished era, but the music still has charm.

The GORGEOUS soprano of Ms. Smith is shown off spectacularly in this brilliant setting of Novello's best known works. Quite beautiful.
