5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2007-02-10

I love this CD. I had this as an album years ago and have been searching for it. It's wonderful to hear Chaka doing this style of music.

4 out of 5 stars Echoes of an Era is a unique jazz offering .......2006-12-25

The comments harsly critiquing Chaka's foray into Jazz are simply ill conceived. First, the jazz greats like Chick Corea, Joe Henderson, Stanley Clarke, et.al., were the best judges to decide whether or not Chaka was up to snuff. Secondly, jazz, despite great efforts to the contrary, is not an elitist artform. There is not one right way to perform a piece. There is not one level of proficiency that legitimizes talent. There is abundant room for interpretation; this is at the core of jazz expression. It would be like comparing Ella with Sarah for the purposes of eliminating one. They were both talented, but their approaches and technical prowess were quite different; they each have their place in jazz history.

A more accurate way to describe Chaka's seminal jazz effort is to say that in these early recording she expressed a natural feel for jazz, but did not exhibit the fine expression seen in one singing jazz as a lifetime endeavor. That said and notwithstanding her need for woodshedding, she demonstrates a natural talent for jazz that some current jazz singers would kill for. It's also worth mentioning that they took no more than two takes on each of the recording to try to get a fresh and retro sound.

Producers like Quincy Jones and Herbie Hancock have it right; get the artists together and let them create something new, perhaps unexpected, and replete with energy and enthusiams. For example, Christina Aguilera performance on "A Song For You". Hers is a worthy jazz vocal effort. Just like Chaka's venture into jazz a few decades ago. These efforts by non-jazz artists serve to influence and inspire young artists of every genre and attract a wider audience base to the the jazz genre in general.

Jazz is not what one thinks it ought to be. It simply is. It is alive and as such its boundries are shaped by the past, not limited by it. The problem with critics, such as those seen here, is that they forget that they themselves are limited by their personal experiences and understanding of something that is not the same as it was yesterday. In a word, they are suffering from a severe case of nostalgia These limiting attitudes about jazz are what may cause its demise. If jazz is going to continue as an evolving artform, it must be infused by views that are unique and sometimes tangential (like Parker). It must be inviting to both the listener and the performer alike.

So, is Chaka on a par with Sarah Vaughn with respect to jazz vocal/musicianship? No, but neithter was Ella. For that matter, Tony Benett is not on a par with Mel Torme's scatting ability, but both are legitimate voices in jazz. However, Chaka's "Echoes of An Era" is filled with fresh and richly unique interpretations of jazz standards. It will definitely find its place in your jazz collection.

By the way, Chaka recorded Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night In Tunisia" under the name "The Memory Still Lingers On"... and guess who played the trumpet solo?... that's right, Dizzy. You don't get a much better validation than that.

3 out of 5 stars Some Rough Edges, But A Nice Album.......2005-08-24

I enjoy straight-ahead jazz, I'm not a Chaka fan, and I didn't buy this 20+ years ago when it first appeared. So I'm approaching this from a slightly different viewpoint - bear with me. With these sidemen, who were the real attraction for me, it's hard to go wrong. I enjoyed the first version of All Of Me, A Train, and Them There Eyes the most. There were a couple of points where Chaka and Stanley Clarke were the only ones making music (I Hear Music, Hire Wire), pretty nice, and I think that a longer recording period vs. the two days actually spent would have developed the interplay more fully.

There are some rough edges, but that's part of live recording good jazz many times, and it doesn't detract too much IMHO. However, the CD packaging leaves a couple of things to be desired. For example, the last track "Spring Can Really Hang You Up", was put on the CD as a 16+ minute track, actually comprising about 8:30 for the tune, a one-minute or so silent period, a short talk by Freddie Hubbard, and then a conversation between Chaka Khan and Lenny White. It looks like someone got lazy, or something.

So - overall about 3-1/2 stars for me. If you were around for the original release, I can see how one would rate it higher.

Now for a trivia question: Chaka Khan received a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Female for this album - but who actually won? Answer: Ella Fitzgerald, who won three of the four category awards 1981-1984 (Sarah Vaughn got the other). If the musicians on this recording had been able to work together a while longer, I think the resulting product would have won the Grammy. But who knows?

3 out of 5 stars This CD is at best a novelty item........2005-07-22

Chaka Khan should stick to what she does best...not jazz. The best part of this CD is the fact that the sideman are so good. You have Freddie Hubbard, Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Joe Henderson, and Lenny White. Face it, you cant go wrong with a combination like that. If anything, buy the record to hear these guys play together. The biggest problem with this record is that Chaka Khan is just way out of her league with the sidemen, she just doesnt quite measure up. However, one great thing about this record is that it prbly exposed some ppl to jazz that would have never considered listening to it before. That being said, this CD is still a novelty item at best. Kind of like Garth Brook's foray as rocker Chris Gaines....Sorry I take that back the Chris Gaines thing was a little harsh.

5 out of 5 stars Chaka the jazz singer!.......2003-10-12

Hearing Chaka sing straight ahead jazz on this project has brought me pure joy for years!! having the lp(which i played to death!)now that it has been reissued on CD, now it gives another generation of fans who missed this when it was first released a chance to hear Ms.Khan in a rare setting!! no this project was not perfect and who's is?? i love the human mistakes, it shows that the musicians and Khan were not out to make a 'perfect'record and the Grammys thought so too by giving this a nomination in the best female jazz catagory! I truly hope in the near future Chaka can continue to sing her favorite music(JAZZ)more!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulour Lindsay String Quartet Recording.......2003-10-28

This recording is one of the closest to a live performance I've ever heard. Its a must for anyone with curiosity - you don't have to like Janacek, string quartets or even classical music to hear the guts in the performance and sheer conviction. A long time fan of the Lindsays', I heard them play these pieces live in London many years ago at one of the most emotive concerts I've ever been to. The recording takes you on a similar ride - the music is visceral and the playing totally convincing.

    5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly beautiful.......2000-11-08

Truly amazed that Dvorak, whose symphonies are outside of my range of appreciation (should I be ashamed of that? I don't know . . . ), wrote such lovely, evocative chamber music. I've listened to this set of 4 CDs repeatedly, with growing delight at the beauty of the music but also at the harmonious interplay between all the instruments -- but then the Lindsays are a fantastic quartet. I have heard no one better, live or recorded. They were my reason for purchasing this set, and their performance is astounding. The quartets and quintets here are marvellously melodious, with nothing strong or heavy-handed, so I found myself constantly questioning "Are you sure this is Dvorak?" While anything performed by the Lindsays is fabulous, I have to say that this collection really shows to advantage their precision and rendering skills and their wonderful coordination, so that the quartets especially are beautifully executed. A really fine CD, great for any collector who likes or loves string quartets.

Great name for a group. I don't know about this particular release, but Stones Throw put out an EP of some early 90s material under the same title a few years ago. I'm not sure if it made it to digital, but if any of that's on here, I highly recommend it. Overall, it was something of a mixed bag, but a great throwback to 90s style, with sweet loop-heavy production heavily influenced by NYC and some early Dan the Automator work as well. The intro was a great bassline, there was a song called Only on Thursday that was dope, but the best track was called Dead Grounds, which I still keep in heavy rotation. The cover to the EP is ill, but I'm not sure you get that here (no image from Amazon). The MC sounds a little like Lord Finesse, which ain't ever a bad thing.
