Arranged by Nelson Riddle.......2006-03-15
This is a gem of an accomplishment for the greatest arranger of our century to have completed before he died. His legacy will live on and his book will help that goal. The interesting anecdotes he adds to the book besides his tutorials on the craft of arranging make this book a "must have" for anyone who lived in this era of music and past it.
The editorial review is incorrect--no '60s recordings here.......2006-01-14
Nelson Riddle's "Best of the Capitol Years" isn't a best-of in the usual sense--none of his hit singles is included. The track list is exactly the same as the Collector's Choice two-fer CD "Hey...Let Yourself Go!/C'mon...Get Happy!" In other words, "Best of the Capitol Years" isn't a greatest hits collection, it is a reissue of two complete albums from 1957-58. To be fair, these were Riddle's two most commercially successful albums, but if you're looking for "Lisbon, Antigua," "Route 66 Theme" or any of Riddle's best, you won't find them on this "best-of."
Wonderful Arrangements!.......2005-01-03
This recording is proof (as if any is needed) of Nelson Riddle's enormous talents as an arranger. Here he takes 24 songs, old warhorses that have been played and sung over and over again, and makes them sound fresh and interesting. He also uses outstanding musicians, including Harry "Sweets" Edison & Juan Tizol, to bring the arrangments to life. In lesser hands such recordings have resulted in mere background music. Riddle makes you want to listen to each and every note!
THE DEAN OF ALL ARRANGERS AT WORK.......2002-02-12
Nelson Riddle was easilly the best arranger and conductor of his time. A great many of the masses call him the greatest thing to happen to Sinatra since FROM HERE TO ETERNITY. It's no secret that Nels revived Sinatra's fading career when they took to the studios at Capitol Records. He had already done miraculous things for Capitol stars Peggy Lee, Nat King Cole and ghostwritten for countless others. Here is a prime example of Nelson and his orchestra on their own, doing what they did best. My personal favorite here is TIME WAS. It seems the perfect vehicle for Riddle and the gang to get into a semi-swinging mood early, then really drive it home with that trademark Riddle tag on the end. The bounce in YOU ARE MY LUCKY STAR is also classic Riddle; and the trombone solo on AM I BLUE (Dick Nash, probably) is at once down-low and silky. Impossible as that seems, you have to remember it was Riddle. Other familiar tunes of the day that Riddle wrote (or was soon to write) charts for for vocalists can be found here (SEPTEMBER IN THE RAIN and DARN THAT DREAM are two standouts). It is interesting to note that he always found a fresh approach even when writing charts for the same piece, for instance, his charts for THE MAN I LOVE for Ella, Keely Smith and Peggy Lee are all beautiful in their own rite, but each one equally different. Can only hope more of his albums make it onto the shelves, and plans are in the works for just that; his two albums of TV Themes were successful sellers and are slated to be released on a Capitol/EMI "2fer" late March. Get this album and find out why he was called the dean of all arrangers.
Ain't No Riddle - He's the Best!.......1999-10-16
Owning 16 vinyl Nelson Riddle albums, his "Best of... (CURB), and now this 24 song-packed cd, arguably if you ain't got it you're collection is not complete. Riddle's treatment of "Without A Song" alone is worth the price (and difficulty of getting this cd - Amazon.com had to work hard at it but finally delivered-and believe me it's worth the wait!). Now if we can just get more releases of older Riddle works...along with some other greats like Don Costa, Kostelanetz (Root Beer Rag), Winterhalter, Ted Heath (September Song), James Last (Eighteenth Century Drawing Room) and everything the Hollyridge Strings ever recroded, etc. More....more....more....PLEASE!!!!!
