Dionne Warwick Sings the Bacharach & David Songbook.......2006-08-25
This 3 CD Set is wonderful. With old songs and Duet with today singers really make this Set worth having. Just kick back and enjoy. What's not to like with Dionne Warwick and the songs of Bacharach & David?
This would make a great gift for those who enjoy good music and wonderful written songs.
Happiness!.......2006-08-19
This cd will make you laugh every time you play it! It's like an endless stream of prozac... you'll be wondering how on earth does a musical gem like this exist! I mean this as a compliment! If you want to take a trip out of this world, play this cd!!!
Dionne in the sixties.......2005-04-13
In the sixties, Dionne Warwick was much more successful in her native America than she was in Britain, but this was mainly because so many of her American hits were covered by British artists and became hits for them instead. As time progressed, this practice died out and Dionne gained the recognition she deserved in Britain too. This compilation focuses on her sixties music, specifically the songs that Bacharach and David wrote.
Bacharach and David were prolific songwriters in the sixties and Dionne relied heavily on their songs at that time. Do you know the way to San Jose and Walk on by were the only songs here to provide Dionne with significant British hits. Many of the other songs provided Dionne with American hits, but even in America, some songs were given to others to have hits with.
Among the songs here that were hits for other singers in Britain, America or both are Anyone who had a heart (Cilla Black), Raindrops keep falling on my head (B J Thomas). I just don't know what to do with myself (Dusty Springfield), Always something there to remind me (Sandie Shaw), I'll never fall in love again (Bobbie Gentry), I say a little prayer (Aretha Franklin), Make it easy on yourself (Walker brothers), What the world needs now is love (Jackie De Shannon), Alfie (Cilla Black), You'll never get to heaven (Stylistics), The look of love (Dusty Springfield) and Only love can break a heart (Gene Pitney). Indeed, there are very few songs on this CD that will be unfamiliar to fans of sixties music.
Notable omissions are Close to you (later made famous by the Carpenters), Don't make me over, and This girl's in love with you, all of which qualified for inclusion here. Still, the quality of the songs here is excellent and, for the price, this is wonderful value.
If you are looking for a collection of Dionne's sixties music, you'll find it difficult to improve on this one.
Poor audio quality ruins great music.......2004-02-29
I LOVE Dionne Warwick. Imagine my disappointment when I played this CD and from the opening track heard hiss and noise. Then on track two, "What the World Needs Now," there's so much distortion it makes the gorgeous song essentially unlistenable. And so on through the album. I'm going to recycle the disc through a used CD store, and get a different collection with better sound. Sorry, I don't yet know which one might be the best -- but it isn't this one.

Customer Reviews:
Attention Broadway Fans!.......1999-03-18
This album is a must have for those of you who are both B'way addicts and connoiseurs of really first-class cheesy pop. Basically, it's a bunch of really talented musical theatre people having a GAS with the Bacharach bubble-gum style. From the first minute of the first track, when Jason Graae starts into the hilariously orchestrated "What's New, Pussycat?"--which starts off with a dig at "Cats"--you'll be laughing. Check out Farah Alvin's bright "Are You There (With Another Girl)" and Susan Egan's over-the-top "Whoever You Are, I Love You" in which she milks the old wailing-diva standard for all it's worth. These performers are usually playing characters--it's so much fun to hear them letting loose and pretending to be pop singers. There are those, of course, who actually take Bacharach seriously. They will be offended at the lack of tortured, hoarse-voiced life-stinks crooners here. The CD may be too clean and well, too well-sung, for them to enjoy. But if you want to hear honest to goodness singers getting DOWN, and have a good laugh in the meantime, pick this up.
BROADWAY TREATMENT OF BACHARACH THAT GROWS ON YOU.......1998-10-03
At first listen, I was disappointed. The voices were unfamiliar and cold; the orchestration overly brassy and loose. And yes, it sounded very Broadway so much so that friends of mine who heard the music for the first time commented that they never knew I was into musicals.
However, after quite a few sessions of playing the CD in my car, this compilation of Bacharach songs actually sounded better and better. (Maybe the ambient noise helped disguise the flaws - seriously.) The Broadway vocal quality became addictive and I got hooked. An inspired selection of songs, some lesser known, also helped. Best tracks are One Less Bell, A House is Not a Home, and Window Wishing. Most of the other tracks are pretty decent as well, but not as good as Maureen McGovern's versions in Baby I'm Yours.
And Linda Krakowski (the secretary in Ally McBeal) should stick to acting. Her rendition of The Look of Love was a horrible attempt at Marilyn Monroe vocals. Helen Reddy should also stay retired. Her vocal acrobatics on That's What Friends are For sounded like a bad joke. There is a little something "extra" after the last track.
Lushly mounted Burt without the emotion.......1998-07-16
Though rarely have Bacharach's works received such a lush production, rarer however is the airlessness with which these classics have been performed. A collection of Broadway-trained voices interpret some intruingly obscure Bacharach songs with an alarming lack of feeling and a preponderance of technigue.
Predictably, the songs associated with Dionne Warwick fare the worst under this Velveeta treatent, and one is left to merely enjoy Bacharach's splendid music imagining how they might sound performed by artists with souls. The best cut by far is La Chanze's "Anyone Who Had a Heart", and it's always nice to hear Helen Reddy again.
The best thing about the album is that it introduces some seldom-heard Bacharach and will perhaps send listeners out to find the original recordings for some indication as to how these songs should sound by artists with a deeper understanding of the lyrics and less of a determination to 'sell it'.

Customer Reviews:
A strange but nice twofer.......2003-04-20
The first album of this twofer was titled Gene Pitney sings Burt Bacharach when released in the USA in 1968. It was not released in the UK until 1971, when it was given the title Gene Pitney sings Bacharach, David and others, and had two extra tracks. The British title, which included extra tracks not written by Burt Bacharach, acknowledges that he didn't write all the songs. He didn't write Baton Rouge or Frisco or Somewhere in the country (a UK top twenty hit) either, and they appeared on the original American album.
The title hides the fact that this was actually a compilation, as all the material had been released before on other albums. Many of these tracks first appeared between 1962 and 1965, including such classics as 24 hours from Tulsa and Only love can break your heart.
Good though the Bacharach album is, Gene's fans may be more interested in the second album on this twofer. It was titled She's a heartbreaker in the USA but Pitney today in the UK, and was a somewhat eclectic mixture. Some of the tracks were R+B influenced, notably Run run roadrunner and 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 count the days, while others were more mainstream pop, like Yours until tomorrow (a minor British hit) and Love grows (this is not the Edison Lighthouse hit, but a different British song).
She's a heartbreaker was released as a single in America, where it became his first top twenty hit for three years, but it was only a B-side in Britain. Two bonus tracks, Animal crackers and Billy you're my friend, never appeared on any original album but were released as singles in America, where one just missed the top 100 and the other just made it.
So, neither of the albums here are particularly important, but there is plenty here to keep Gene's committed fans interested.

Customer Reviews:
This is not the definitive collection.......2003-01-05
I purchased this CD based on the reviews here, and mostly based on the names: Warwick, Bacharach, David. But after listening to the album, I very much doubt that any of the three would endorse it.
The "Import" label was suspicious, and the songs sound like imitations of the originals. There's no doubt that this is Dionne's voice, and Burt and Hal's lyrics and songs, but these are not the renditions that we've fallen in love with. Dionne's voice lacks the familiar soul and mastery of the originals (just where did they get those vocal tracks?), and the musical arrangements lack depth and texture and do not blend well with the vocals. There is distortion and poor balance between vocals and music in this production, making it disturbing to listen to.
This is an album I thought I would want to listen to over and over, but it lacks the musical magic we know of these songs and these artists. Warwick, Bacharach and David will always be five star by my estimation, but this production is a zero.
Very good collection.......2002-09-18
Dionne Warwick is a gifted singer, her long musical relationship with Burt Bacharach and Hal David produced a string of hits for her, all of them except "Don't Make Me Over" are included in this CD, and many are today timeless pop classics.
Their musical relationship had a gap in the 70's and early 80's. In this period Warwick recorded with some other producers or songwriters as Holland-Dozier-Holland, Jerry Ragovoy and notably the album "Heartbreaker" produced by Barry Gibb and others with songs written by The Bee Gees, which stamped her voice in the 80's and gave her a new profile that continues up to now. She joined again with Bacharach as a songwriter and producer, and also with Bararach and David for a new song in the 90's.
This CD also contains some cover versions of Bacharach-David songs which were hits for other artists as "I Just Don't Know What to Do with myself" (Dusty Springfield), "Trains and Boats and Planes" (Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas), "Raindrops Keep Falling in my Head" (B J Thomas) or "Only Love can Break a Heart" (Gene Pitney) to which Dionne Warwick give her personal approach. Very good collection, not 5 stars because the sound quality could be very much better.
Wonderful! You will listen to over and over again.......2002-09-05
I enjoyed this CD to the ultimate. Most of the favorite songs you hear on movies and wish you could have are compiled on this disk. I played it over and over again.
Five stars easily
Why the SAME old Songs on every historical reissure?.......2001-06-06
When OH! When will Ms Warwick and the Powers That Be release the COMPLETE discography of her Scepter recordings (63-73) and/or ALL of her Burt Bachrach? For many of us GI's in Viet-Nam, during the era of Acid Rock, Ms Warwick's artistry (Thanks to the Columbia record Club) was the soul of Sanity. Most of her Bachrach has NEVER been equalled, much less surpassed. I believe that she is the only 60's and 70's major artist, the great bulk of whose greatest work, is currently unavailble on CD, Any Takers?
Best Bacharach interpretation so far.......2000-07-05
Warwick's version of the Bacharach songs are the best. I think somehow because the then fresh musical arrangement and Warwick's unique voice have seldom been copied or imitated. Everybody else have done the songs the tired old way.
Moreover, in my mind, Warwick has not sung (nor chosen) any other song well.
It's a pity this CD does not include "Papier Mache" and "Theme from the Valley of the Dolls"
Just the same, 22 top songs aren't that bad.

Connie Francis Sings Burt Bacharach CD.......2007-05-12
Most songs are good but not as clear as I had hoped for.
Better than ever.......2005-12-23
Connie Francis is probably the single biggest commercially succesful singer in pop history. Some rare singers have chops, voices as superb instruments, that have perfect pitch and reach any part of artistry effortlessly. Only Ella Fitzgerald and Jack Jones come to mind. But, most great singers use contrivences and that becomes part of the charm of their artistry-Cher who has her "swoops" [a superb and underated singer],Rod Stewart, etc. Well Connie, when given adult and sophisticated faire still uses her ascending but dropping notes technique and becomes a superb singer. I don,t know who the arranger is here, maybe Claus Ogerman?, but just glorious arrangements and playing. Bacharach obviously inspired here and this is one lush and luscious effort. My favorite Connie Francis album!
AMEN and Thank you Japan.......2005-10-14
Well it's about time someone understands supply and demand here in the US, even if it is a country outside of the US. All thanks to you Japan. Connie Francis was one of Americas greatest imports. The joys and entertainment she has bestowed on us here in the US as well as others over seas has gone greatly unsung for far too long. What is wrong here. Where are all the other great recordings she mastered in the early, middle and late sixties? And while we are at it, how about the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. What is going on there? Why is Connie overlooked every time????? Anyway this recording ranks as one of her greatest. She takes songs made famous by other female singers and makes them her own. I will say what I have said for years, in her prine NO ONE could touch her. Listen to these selections and you will see after all these years, she still is our number one female singer. What a voice.
ABOUT TIME.......2005-09-24
Leave it to Japan to release a rare and complete Connie Francis lp on CD and not her native USA. What does that say about us? I am glad they did it as this is one of her best in the catalogue from a one a kind artist. She covers songs made famous by other singers. Listen to this--these songs now belong to her. Thanks to Japan for the foresight, intelligence and respect they have given to his legendary performer. Maybe Universal will get on the stick and start releasing some of these treasured lps on CD in this country and give her the same respect that has been so shamefully ignored for many years.

Dionne's voice is strong, sometimes so strong there's a slight distortion. Volume levels vary from song to song but it's not irritating. the order the songs are in tells a beautiful story of life, love, heartbreak, and hope.
