Someone to Watch over Me: Songs of George Gershwin
Editorial Reviews
Jazz Times
Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Gershwin's birth, she takes a cool, Lee Wiley-like approach to the 15 tunes on this disc. A jumping small band tastefully arranged by drummer Rich DeRosa or pianist Allen Farnham backs her on several tracks.

Fabulous Fare.......2007-07-12
McCorkle interprets Gershwin beautifully. The tracks are well selected and are very representative of Gershwin's talent. This one is great.
Another masterpiece from Susannah.......2003-05-31
George Gershwin co-wrote many classic songs, often with his brother Ira but also with others. Susannah was renowned as a great interpreter of old songs, so it was no surprise that she recorded an album of Gershwin songs. Nor was it any surprise that she included some obscure songs as well as some standards.
Several famous songs did find their way on to this album, including They'll never take that away from me, Someone to watch over me, It ain't necessarily so, I got rhythm, S'wonderful and (perhaps most famous of all) Summertime. By contrast, Will you remember me remained unpublished for many years, though the quality of this song makes one wonder why somebody didn't record it. It was written for a show but dropped during rehearsals. The oldest song here, Drifting with the tide, is not among the more famous songs, but it is really lovely.
Susannah recorded many excellent albums, but this is as good as any of them. The number of famous songs makes it one of the easiest Susannah albums to appreciate, although there are enough obscure songs to maintain interest in the album after repeated listening.
My review.......2001-07-09
I heard her live in Chicago at Evette's about 3 years ago and thought she was great. I bought at least two of her CD's before and especially liked her Cole Porter renditions. I thought the Gershwin interpretations were a bit strained. Very shocked to hear of her recent suicide.
Where was I?.......2001-06-06
It took her death to get me to listen. She is outstanding and is backed by great musicians doing fine arrangements. Pay particular attention to I Got Rhythm.
Gone too soon..........2001-05-21
Dang, too often it takes tragedy in the entertainment field to uncover a lesser-known, diamond-in-the-rough type singer. I've become even more acquainted with Susannah's voice since her death just days ago (5/18/01). Oh, the dozens of Concord compilations which feature her voice never caught my attention (and are surely worth another listen), but this Gershwin disc sure did. Very sedating and relaxing songs with exceptional backing are represented here. I'll definitely plan to broaden my reviews once I've had a chance to garner future discs by Susannah. Surely she's enjoying her stay with Sarah, Carmen, and Ella!!

Album Description
American pianist Richard Dowling performs virtually all of Gershwin's original works for solo piano along with several new transcriptions of Gershwin improvisations from disc recordings and player piano rolls. Dowling transcribed several of the tracks himself including a world premiere of Gershwin's own three-minute rendition of the main theme of "Rhapsody in Blue." Rounding out the disc are Earl Wild's Seven Virtuoso Etudes on Themes by Gershwin.
Customer Reviews:
This guy is AMAZING!.......2002-12-08
I heard one of Dowling's concerts and he's awesome! I play this CD in my car and almost got a speeding ticket because of it. Richard really knows the Gershwin style. It's upbeat and a lot of fun to listen to over and over.
He's Got Rhythm!.......2001-08-31
Richard's got the most amazing fingers (and ears)! He's such a good pianist that you'll swear you're hearing old George playing himself. If you love music from 1920s and 30s New York, this is about as authentic as it gets. The Earl Wild pieces at the end will blow you away. You'll want to listen to this CD over and over because the music is happy and the execution is perfect.
Richard Dowling has found teh Gershwin Way to play.......2001-08-17
The masterful work displayed on this CD is a pleasure to listen to. The speed with which the keystrokes are perfectly executed is simply astounding. I have only had the CD for about a week and have enjoyed it completely many times.

Real Patriotism Through Extraordinary Music.......2003-02-26
In the wake of considerable ersatz patriotism following 9/11, I have become sensitive to what I consider to be acts of true patriotism. Recording these very American songs, with a tremendous commitment to showing them in their most pristine and revealing light, is one of those, perhaps small, acts of patriotism that are profound in their ability to show the best of the United States of America. I used the word "commitment" in the above sentence because that is the underlying theme of this entire venture. Ms. Danton sings with amazing clarity of voice and tremendous enthusiasm for the material. Each of these songs is a minor masterpiece, as presented, and the whole album is captivating and deeply compelling. These songs stay with you. I find myself humming the melodies for days. They are, indeed, songs many of us grew up with or have heard for years. So there you have it: 5 stars for the material, 5 stars for the performances and 5 stars for the recording quality.

Customer Reviews:
from Solo Piano Publications.......2004-10-20
Equity Digital is rereleasing pianist Michael Dulin's two earlier classical recordings at the same time as his newest release, "Timeless: Classics for a New Age" (October 19, 2004). Originally released in 1999, "A Nice Boy From Brooklyn" is comprised of "The Gershwin Songbook," Six Preludes, and eight Improvisations that were never written down by Gershwin himself, but were transcribed from live radio broadcasts from 1926 and 1928 by Artis Wodehouse. Dulin's mastery of the piano makes all thirty-two tracks seem effortless and showcase his brilliant virtuosity as well as his amazing versatility. A world-class pianist with a long career in classical music, Dulin makes all of these pieces his own, giving them a sparkling freshness and a feeling of spontaneity. He added some of his own embellishments to the improvisations, but otherwise, remains faithful to Gershwin's original scores.
The extensive liner notes, also written by Dulin, give insight into Gershwin's personality with quotations from other artists and people who knew Gershwin, and then gives a history of many of the selections. "The Gershwin Songbook" was originally published in 1932, and is made up of eighteen variations and arrangements of songs that Gershwin used to entertain his friends in the intimacy of living room settings. Many of Gershwin's most famous and popular songs are included such as "The Man I Love," "Swanee," "Fascinating Rhythm," "Lady Be Good," "'S Wonderful," and "I Got Rhythm." The variety of styles is amazing - from bluesy ballads to full-tilt finger-flying jazz. Dulin's emotional range and tonal colorations are remarkable. The Six Preludes are quite short, and Dulin calls the firs three "his most perfect compositions." Of the six, I especially like "Blue Lullaby," a dark, slinky little piece. Some of the eight Improvisations are variations or arrangements of pieces from the songbook, so it is fascinating to see what Gershwin (and Dulin!) did to flesh them out. Again, Dulin's playing is fresh and flawless. Some of the titles in this section of the recording are "Clap Yo' Hands," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Sweet and Low Down," and "'S Wonderful/Funny Face."
If you are new to Gershwin's music, "A Nice Boy From Brooklyn" is an absolute must-have. If you know all of Gershwin's music, this is also a must-have to hear the music as it was composed and interpreted by the composer himself. So much of Gershwin's music has been performed and recorded over the years, and most of it is improvised and arranged by the various musicians who play it, so it's refreshing as well as informative to hear the "real deal" - or, at the very least, how the music began and evolved during Gershwin's life. I give "A Nice Boy From Brooklyn" my highest recommendation. Great stuff!
Highly Recommended!.......2000-05-01
This is a fabulous performance of Gershwin's piano music. The CD includes some great music and new arrangements that I was unfamiliar with. Dulin plays the fire out of the piano on this CD. I heard him play live in New York, and he is a great player. I have a lot of Gershwin's music, and this CD is one of my favorites!

Ciofi deserves to be better known.......2000-05-19
I am a great fan of Patrizia Ciofi's wonderful voice - I would not want to hide this. I already have recordings of live performances in bel canto repertoire - Sonnambula (wonderful!) and the french version Lucie di Lammermor (very good). I took a risk in ordering this Italian recording, and was not disappointed. The repertoire includes Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Bernstein and Gershwin. The recorded sound is not the best and the accompanist is not good. However I have enjoyed this recording very much indeed, play it often and recommend it to others. I do wish that the major recording companies will pay attention to this artist and capture her now, while her voice is at its captivating best. Unfortunately this disc gives no biographical detail, and seems to include two identical recordings of Ich Grolle Nicht - for no apparent rreason. Strange!
