Raise your voice and praise the Lord. And if you're in a vocal group like the Persuasions, praise Him loudly. Even after 35 years of making great records, the Persuasions are exciting, thrilling to hear. Their tight, interwoven vocals are a metaphor for humanity getting along, and their sound is just plain fun. While they always include some gospel, Sunday Morning Soul is entirely religious; except for one, they're all standards. Jerry Lawson sings lead, his lush and rich tones floating heavenward on "Did You Stop to Pray," "One Thing You Can't Take Away," and eight more greats. You want to get deep? Try singing along with bassist Jimmy Hayes when he steps out (or is it down?) on "Walk in Jerusalem." And second tenor Joe Russell also takes a lead, rendering "Thank You for One More Day" with all the power that gratitude and glory allows. Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

This CD grows and grows on you. The Dr. John rendition of "Ain't No Sunshine," is worth the purchase alone. The Alan Touissant stuff is musically imaginative and the Sue Foley song is perfectly fit into the mix.

Beautiful A Capella Gospel.......2005-09-07

This is a fabulous album. I stumbled upon an MP3 of Praise His Name, and decided to order the album based on that one song. I have not been disappointed. Anyone who enjoys old-fashioned gospel singing will love this CD.

Great acapella gospel music!!.......2004-06-01

I was searching for some acapella gospel music and decided to give "Sunday Morning Soul" a try. I had never listened to the Persuasions before. Wow! Fantastic singing. You will be uplifted. If there were 6 stars I would give it. This was money well spent.

Returning to their Roots.......2000-06-23

It is about time this group returned to the music they are most familiar with and grew up with in the South. The vocal harmonies are still great, although I miss Toubo who passed away some years ago. Perhaps he was an inspiration to them as was one of their NJ fans,Vera. She had long suggested they do a gospel CD. Glad to see Joe took her idea and used to the group's advantage. With the proper marketing this should do well for them. Let's hope the warm, rich harmonies will help get gospel music back to some measure of what it use to be "Go Tell- The Good News. Bless you guys, your maturity is finally showing. Sweet Joe from the wilds of North Carolina.

Actually, three and a half stars. Thornetta has a soulful voice the world needs to know about........2006-06-22

Formerly involved as a backup singer with the Detroit Funk/Metal band Big Chief (members of whom I believe perform the music duties here), Thornetta Davis takes advantage of her first solo effort to highlight the range of her amazing, honey-drenched voice.

This album starts strong, but loses a lot of steam along the way. Probably because the musical styles run the genre gambit, with songs ranging from the blistering, bluesy funk-rock of the opening tracks 'Cry' and 'Helpless', to the Gospel infused 'Sunday Morning' and the happy-pop piano plinking of 'Come Go With Me'. Davis even throws in a bland cover of Stevie Wonders', 'You Haven't Done Nothin' for good measure.

Although she has a rabid fan following in Detroit, other than this album and her work with the Big Chief band, Davis has only released one other CD (that I can find), Thornetta Davis Covered Live at the Music Menu, way back in 2001. It's the best live blues album I've had the pleasure of listening to in... maybe forever.

Get 'em both and enjoy - and hope we'll be lucky enough to see another album in the not-too-distant future.

Thornetta Davis is a treasure here in Metro-Detroit, and is even better live! Sunday Morning Music is a soulful and honest journey that is as intimate as reading a personal journal. This CD is highly recommended, as well as her follow-up of live recordings that has just been released!

it's a crime more people haven't heard this.......2000-06-09

i first saw this featured in a record store three or four records, at a listening station. i gave it a spin, really enjoyed it, made a point of looking for 'that kind of music' in the future -- good enough for me to buy it years later, once the internet made it possible for me to track down the artist's name again, not to mention locate a copy of this gem. what i did not realize at the time i first heard it was that no one else seems to be making 'that kind of music.' what is it? is it soul? is it blues? is it hymnal? is it R&B? i don't know what to call it. but it's powerful stuff. sometimes i restlessly go through the cd collection wanting something to hear, yet neither rock nor jazz nor classical seems to fit the mood. turns out this was it.

New Blue's, R&B Convert..........2000-02-25

Never really exposed to the Blue's/ R&B scene, my friend (Ed) convinced me a year and a half ago to go out to the Music Menu, in Greek Town, Detroit, Michigan, to go and see Thornetta Davis.

I sat there in awe and no words could come close to describing the emotions that her sweet and powerful voice stirred within me.

So far, I have bought 3 CD's of hers to share with my friends from other states so they too, can become moved by this very talented woman.

If you are ever in Detroit, check her out at the Music Menu on Wednesday nights, she will make a convert out of you too!
