Tenderness

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
For "Tenderness," singer Al Jarreau combined the best aspects of the studio and a live setting. He invited not only an allstar band but also a small audience of fans and friends into an L.A. studio. The result is the best possible environment for an Al Jarreau album. He responds with the fluid, ornamental vocal lines he's famous for. He does a fine job with the snaking rhythms of Jorge Ben's standard "Més que mada" and with the sentimental hook of Goffin & King's "Go Away Little Girl." Jarreau still can't resist the temptation to sing three notes where one will do; this is especially obvious on his overly cluttered duet with opera diva Kathleen Battle on Rodgers & Hammerstein's "My Favorite Things." --Geoffrey Himes

1 out of 5 stars I could sing better........2007-07-11

Endless dripple. His voice is so shaky it's like an old man with Parkinson's. Don't waste your time with this one!

5 out of 5 stars Michael Bolton's best CD ever........2007-05-26

This is Michael Bolton's all-time best and most successful CD. The timeless ballad "Missing You Now" is one of the best torch songs ever recorded and easily justifies buying this CD. Other key tracks include "We're Not Making Love Anymore" (superb duet with Patti LaBelle), "New Love" and the sublime "Forever Isn't Long Enough". None of Michael Bolton's subsequent releases could match this one's greatness but "Time, Love And Tenderness" is an indispensable CD for any fan of emotive and romantic music.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely surerb!.......2007-04-10

I love every track of this CD. Specially, 'Missing you now', 'Now that I found you' and 'We're not making love anymore'. He sounds so perfect for me and I completely leave everything when anybody plays his song. Great lyrics, perfect pitch and absolutely worthy CD to buy. ITS SUPERB and deserves more than 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Get real!.......2007-02-22

You mugs, and I use that word loosely, who like to continuously bash Michael Bolton, need your collective heads examined in reference to this disc. T, L, & T is just a special release from start to finish. The songs are good, the music is tight, and I mean what more can you ask for when you purchase a CD? It's not like you don't know what you're gonna get with Michael B, as far as his delivery is concerned. So what you're saying is you buy it and then you're surprised? I don't think so. You're using this forum to hate on him that's all. For those who like him, I rate this as the pinnacle of his success, in my humble opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Commercial good music.......2006-10-14

There are many things I could say about this album, I'll try to do it in the best English I know: I think it demonstrates that commercial music can be also good. The production is very good, everytime you listen to the songs you can hear more and more instruments playing, sometimes it feels like a kind of "modern orchestra" is playing the music (I am sure you'll feel like this when you listen to the title song called "Time, love and tenderness", it's one of Michael's most famous song and one of my favourites. I found influences of rock, pop and gospel in this song, in fact Michael has done a lot of black music and his songs that have gospel choirs are part of his label, and to me the best ones!). BY THE WAY, if you like this album you will love Celine Dion's album called also "Celine Dion", it was released a year after and Walter Afanasieff and Diane Warren also collaborated on it, these great artists have also good collaborators!

Absolutely fantastic, that's all I can say about the quality of the whole CD. I just wish Al can give a concert like that again.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-01-09

I love Al Jarreau. I purchased this some time ago and thought it was damaged and threw it away. I later learned that it was my CD player. I am so glad to find it again. It is one of my favorite Al Jarreau CDs

5 out of 5 stars Love, Love, Love this CD.......2006-12-15

I heard this CD at a family members house two weeks ago and knew I had to buy it. I love every single song. I have never been a fan of Al Jarreau, but this CD has me hooked to buy more of his music.

5 out of 5 stars One of his masterpieces... the master in top form.......2006-10-06

For those who marvelled at what Al Jarreau could do with a simple song with the considerable power and virtuosity of that voice, with the ingenious embellishments and turns of phases, this album is for you.

Throughout the years, Al has recorded many albums some very smooth and produced. During the smooth period some of longed for the dynamic virtuoso who redefined and added that unique take on even the most well worn composition.

Here we have Al returning to high energy top form. Bending notes. Soaring in the stratosphere, rattling the floorboards, scatting, whispering and shouting with conviction and soulful.

Al has a unique and original vision. It shows throughout this recording. Real high points are

Mas Que Nada - A good take on this classic Brazilian with some distinctive embellishments, solid arrangment and very clever hooks.

Try A Little Tenderness - Fine job on a well known piece with some playfulness thrown in.

She's Leaving Home - The poignant Beatles piece. Compelling, equally poignant and wistful.

We Got By - This version is actually much better than the original rendition, Al did years ago, with a strong solo by David Sanborn.

You Don't See Me - This one he's known for since early in his career. It was one of his signature songs - this version is a show stopper. It proves that Al doesn't get older, just better.

This one is not to be missed. Fine soloists and a solid band. A return to top form. Kudos to Al.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent songs, wonderful band, outstanding job.......2003-10-17

Al jarreau does not sing the songs. He interpretes and fells them. As a brazilian, I feel he's done a great job singing "Mas que nada" in perfect Portuguese (!), swinging like a native born and grown brazilian guy. It is an indispensable CD if you want to listen to good music, relax and fell the atmosphere. Please, don't forget to dim out the lights...

3 out of 5 stars Great guitar-centric but still 'electronic' tunes.......2006-08-15

Jonny Marr's guitar is all over all of these tracks and it adds a nice dynamic sound to the synths. The lyrics are pushed back in the mix and a sometimes substantial reverb is placed at the front. The tracks might be a tad too long.

Its a great sounding CD if you already like New Order and Electronic.

5 out of 5 stars Electronic fans rejoice!.......2006-02-26

My reviews tend towards the short and sweet. This one will be no different. If you love Electronic, you'll love this disc. Fans of Electronic should also check out: Monaco, The Other Two & of course ... New Order.

5 out of 5 stars I WELCOME DEPARTURE.......2005-08-02

Only took 5 yrs for me to discover that this gem of an album had been released...THANKS AMAZON FOR THE RECOMMENDATION!! Being a fan of NEW ORDER and the various side projects (REVENGE, THE OTHER TWO, MONACO) I relentlessly anticipated another release from Electronic but gave up after a few years. This is by far my favorite Electronic release. The much broader and heavier rock tone sets it apart from even the earlier Smiths, and New Order material. I'm looking for a BEST OF compilation next!!

3 out of 5 stars Some side projects best remain one-shots........2005-03-02

Quietly released in 2000, the third longplayer from Electronic is a better effort than the second, "Raise The Pressure." That is primarily due to the fact that Johnny Marr keeps his profile higher than Bernard Sumner, so "Twisted Tenderness" is more a guitar album than the previous two. You might be forgiven into thinking this is a Johnny Marr solo album with help from Bernard Summer, and appreciate it a bit more.

But the whole point behind the appeal to Electronic's debut album was that all the contributors perfectly balanced, and brought out the best in, each other. To this album's credit, the title track is fantastic. The remaining songs are too long and overproduced. Stick with the debut.

5 out of 5 stars Remembering "The Good Monk".......2005-02-15

It's nice to see Grigori Rasputin on the cover of a CD. He was a Goodman!

5 out of 5 stars JUST PERFECTION!!.......2006-04-08

I have all of Dmitri's recordings and this is my favorite due to the quality of the songs, Dmitri's mastery of all of them and the really lush orchestrations. All of the songs are just gorgeous and his voice so beautiful that I listen to this all day at work on my portable CD player. I recently saw him in concert and purchased the DVD of the "War Songs" which were featured in the second half of his concert. Of course, I recommend the CD and the DVD as really stunning. However, if I could only listen to one of his CD's, this is my favorite. As a former singer who trained for 15 years, I can tell you that Dmitri's vocal technique is perfect, just perfect! The voice comes from heaven! Don't wait to get this one!

5 out of 5 stars Hvorostovsky...........again, magic.......2006-02-14

Moscow Nights - This collection is emotionally draining, sad; the minor keys, the great poets and composers, an era unexpressed to Americans. It is a revelation, tended by one of the most beautiful of Russian voices. Listen to it in pieces, in a quiet space, and ponder. Dmitri commands an opera stage - two visits to Queen of Spades at the Met- can lead to no other conclusion. However, it is his quiet recollections of Russian folk music, Russian sacred music, and Soviet music that arouses his greatest talents. This is a recording to be treasured.

5 out of 5 stars hvorostovsky does it again.......2005-05-01

This is the latest installment of the succesfull Hvorostosky/Orbelian collaboration. In "I met you my love" the spotlight was on the socalled Russian Romances, russian art songs of the 19e century. Then came " Where are you my brothers" a collection of Russian war songs. This title contains a collection of the best post war(50s&60s) songs. If you love melodious songs in minor key this is it.The selection is quiet varied and everybody will have his or her own favourites. For me there was'nt a redundant song. The singing is as always faultless and inspired, the Moscow Chamber Orchestra plays topnotch and the arrangments by Evgeny Stesyuk are as always beautifull. But be warned this cd can have a depressing effect because besides being beautifull this music is also mostly very moving. Buy if you love russian music and good musicianship you can't go wrong with this one.

Jerome Najee Rasheed has used a combination of soprano and tenor saxophones, flute, keyboards, and more to become one of the success stories of smooth-jazz radio. Fittingly, his fifth major recording, Morning Tenderness, is a buttery-soft assortment of R&B-flavored lite jazz intended to meld quickly and easily into the ears. For fans of smooth jazz and its more urban-influenced predecessor, the Quiet Storm, you may be hard-pressed to find a more agreeable, easy-on-the-ears collection of soft soul and gentle saxophone than on this carefully crafted recording. Smooth-jazz artists typically focus on one of two themes, seduction or relaxation, and, as the title suggests, this 10-track collection serves as a soundtrack for slow Sunday mornings and breakfast-in-bed contentment--music for days when you're riding down Easy Street on cruise control. Najee's admiration for Stevie Wonder is evident in several tracks, particularly "Indian Summer" and the flute-based "Just for You." Seven of the album's tracks feature breathy background vocals as Najee strategically shuffles moods, instruments, and textures. "Room to Breathe," where Najee delivers huskier tones and more soulful playing, is the album's most attractive cut. --Terry Wood

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very Refreshing!!.......2002-06-11

This album may not be what most fans of Najee expect. But, it still gets allot of play in my household. I love "Sapphire" and "Indian Summer". But "Room to Breathe" is his best track on this album. This is well recommended to those who don't know the music of Najee.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Najee!.......2000-05-12

Najee has done it again! I have had this CD for a while now and every time I listen to it I'm even more impressed than the time before. The arrangement of the songs is perfect beginning with the verbal introduction from his kids. My favorite songs are "Sapphire," "Morning Tenderness" and "Indian Summer." I have suggested this CD to several of my friends and they love it as much as I do. A MUST have for that saucy, slow-jam jazz collection!

5 out of 5 stars Great easy listening for a romantic evening!.......1999-10-25

Najee is up to his high standards with this album. A variety of sounds just right for listening on a rainy, lazy afternoon/evening in front of a warm fire with the one you love.

5 out of 5 stars Love It!.......1999-10-15

This is truly Najee at his very best. A MUST for Najee fans

3 out of 5 stars if you've heard najee before..........1999-10-04

There is one good thing I can say about this CD and its the same ole najee. One bad thing about this album is its the same ole najee. I am a big fan of najee and own all of his albums. However I feel that he has grown little as a musician since his debut album in 1986. It would be easy to take a track from morning tenderness and replace it with a track from najees theme without any disruption in CD. But it is his usual solid and stellar performance which is why I gave it 3 stars

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Music from Humphrey Bogar Movies.......2007-06-27

I was disappointed. I thought I would be getting a CD of full length themes from his movies but the CD is exactly what it says. It is from the actual films, in sections and pieces. I can't say it was misrepresented so I guess I was at fault. But I am sorry I bought it.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the original.......2007-06-19

As the previous reviewer rightly pointed out, these are the original recordings from the era the films were made. And yes, the sound is completely different from what we are used to hear when we are turning the CD player on: it's mono, it's partially unsteady and some of the pieces suddenly fade. BUT, it's the REAL thing and it transports the charms and the charisma, inherent to the original ONLY.
Those who prefer the flawless technical perfection of a re-recording better should save their money. But for those who love the movies and their genuine sound, should be perfectly pleased with this release.

2 out of 5 stars not the stuff dreams are made of.......2007-01-03

most of the tracks on this cd are available elsewhere, but what prompts me to give this a low review is the quality of the recording. some of them sound like they were taped off of a tv set showing a warbly print. you can do better elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Good listening.......2000-06-11

For years I listened to the theme music on Inspector Morse and wondered what it was. Now that Amazon makes it easy to track such things down, I know. These three albums (volumes 1, 2, and 3) combine Barrington Pheloung's wonderful theme and background music with Morse's favorites (be warned, we get into some opera here). The three volumes provide an excellent evening of classical music.

5 out of 5 stars Another example of great playing.......2007-01-10

This CD of Sergei's playing is very nice. Him and his sister are a fine duo that can make very beautiful music with just the Piano and Trumpet/Flugelhorn. This CD shows Sergei's expressive and lyrical side rather than his great technical ability. The music on this CD is something you would want to sit in front of a fire and really relax. I would recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys Classical music, not just to trumpet players.

3 out of 5 stars Elegie with a trumpet.......2007-01-09

Looking for Elegie. It was the correct piece, but I would have preferred it done with violins etc. Elegie was my mother's favorite piece.

5 out of 5 stars Poetic.......2000-06-07

Sergei Nakariakov is one of the greatest trumpet players alive today. His repertoire is enormous and keeps growing. He is featured here on a disc of songs and lieder from the vocal repertoire. Who needs words? His trumpet speaks as clear as any voice, and is as touching as any words could be. The music is brilliant anyway. He someone makes it all a little more special.

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2006-05-06

As a long time fan of the Smiths and New Order and of course Electronic, in my opinion this is the best Marr and Sumner's Electronic album to date. This album sounds more rockish than the previous work. Excellent guitar work in songs like Flicker, Late at Night, Haze and Vivid and great Techno in Twisted Tenderness. Also you don't want to miss the great song (should have been an A-Side!) Warning Sign.

4 out of 5 stars Deluxe okay but not great........2003-08-02

Unless you get a good deal the deluxe version isn't worth getting as the only track that I listen to all the way through is Prodigal Son (Star In Your Mind mix) even though, ironically, it is the longest track. I consider the first three tracks on Disk 2 to be actually part of the end of Disk 1.
The best songs by far are the title track, Prodigal Son, Haze, Vivid, Make It Happen, King for a Day, and the first couple of minutes of Like No Other. I tend to skip over the remaining tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Great collaboration where the New Order influence dominates.......2003-07-16

Electronic's latest album is full of guitar courtesy of the Smith's Johnny Marr, and great lyrics, songs, and the New Order sound courtesy of Bernard Sumner. Does this collaboration work?.... Totally!

I purchased this cd prior to New Order's latest album "Get Ready". I have to say that musically and lyrically that I feel "Get Ready" is the better album. However, "Twisted Tenderness" is very strong.

Most of the songs have guitar, synth, and big beats. I feel that Bernard Sumner probably wrote not only the lyrics, but the music also. The songs are very cohesive and sound like they were made by a seasoned musician who has mastered the art of making danceable rock songs.

I have not heard a lot of New Order's older albums, but I would catorigize this album as a mix between "Republic's" dance songs and "Get Ready's" more guitar oriented songs. The mix works good.

Anyway I highly recommend this album. The disk 2 offers I think two new songs and about 6 remixes of disk 1. So I think just buying "Twisted Tenderness" without the deluxe part would be good, unless you like remixes or as in my case they only had the Deluxe cd in stock.

5 out of 5 stars Best of its genre.......2002-05-17

A wonderful album. The obsessively tidy Sumner did a fantastic job making this album work cohesively and smoothly...yet with a rough edge. I am a New Order/Electronic fan to the hilt and this is one of the best albums of that genre. I stick with disc one for the most part.

4 out of 5 stars Okay, but superfluous if you have the original........2001-12-11

I was very excited when I first heard about "Twisted Tenderness Deluxe." After I listened to it I found myself wishing it had been "Raise the Pressure Deluxe." Yes, I love "Twisted Tenderness." It's a mighty recording. "Haze" and "Vivid" absolutely blow my socks off! But I was expecting more. More like the outtakes from "Raise the Pressure" which wound up on the B-sides of singles like "Forbidden City" and "For You." Songs like "All That I Need," "I Feel Allright," "A New Religion" etc. These were tracks that made me scratch my head and wonder "Why weren't they on the album?" Well, there's none of that here. Disc One is "T. T." in its entirety, which is the only reason I give this four stars. Disc Two is just a compilation of gay bar dub mixes and there are no surprises and it is quite tedious. I was "Disappointed," you get it, title of their single from "Cool World" with Neil Tennant on lead vocals. I'm an original Joy Division/ New Order/ Electronic/ Other Two, you get the idea, fan and would pretty much gladly go out and buy anything that these people record. But in this case, I felt like all I got was some glossy new packaging. Give me the original version with Rasputin on the cover anyday. Save yourself some money and don't bother.
