Irving Berlin's songs defined popular music in Tin Pan Alley, and once the talkies took over, the composer who helped shape ragtime found a second wind, churning out movie song after movie song that kept him in the entertainment spotlight. Irving Berlin in Hollywood focuses on these songs, made unforgettable by the likes of Fred Astaire, Ethel Merman, Judy Garland, and the full-throated Betty Hutton. It's infectious stuff, brimming with romance and timeless themes; even today it's hard not to be caught in the charms of songs like "Anything You Can Do" or "Cheek to Cheek." Because of licensing difficulties, there are some obvious omissions from some of Berlin's finest screen moments (no Holiday Inn or White Christmas tracks), but there are plenty of gems here (tracks from Easter Parade, Annie Get Your Gun, Top Hat, and Alexander's Ragtime Band). A few previously unreleased Merman tunes and great liner notes by Ian Whitcomb make this a must-have for musical lovers and one of the best collections of Berlin's music. --Jason Verlinde

Eric Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have done it again. This is a spectacular collection. It makes you feel like getting dressed up with a lot of glitz and glam and going dancing. Though I must admit that Fredrica Von Stade's rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" will definitely touch your heart.

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

This is a great compilation of film performances of songs by the king of American standards. Berlin wrote many songs which were introduced by Fred Astaire and Ethel Merman, an there is a nice sampling of these two artists here. Jolson's "Blue Skies" from 1927's THE JAZZ SINGER also appears, and many many others. "You're Just in Love" is one of the most brilliant pieces of melody/countermelody overlapping in the history of music and will be stuck in your head for days. You will also find both Judy Garland AND Betty Hutton's ANNIE GET YOUR GUN songs here, along with a bevy of other greats.

The work of Irving Berlin is still as fresh as ever, and I have a new appreciation for the late Ethel Merman based on her swingy, energetic rendition of "Marching Along With Time," which was one of the best musical numbers to wind up on the cutting room floor -- thankfully, it was resurrected and we can enjoy it today. Today's youthful swing fans should hear it and realize what the truly hot stuff really sounds like!

I just bought this CD a few days ago and already it's one of my favorite CD's ever! Each song is bright, original, and catchy. I'd never heard most of them before, but after having listened to them only a few times, they seem to fit my ears like an old glove. (That's an odd image...) If you see this CD, buy it!!!

This is an exciting cd. It features the hits of many of the great tunesmiths of America. What a treat!

I belive this series showcases six composers on each cd. With this format, there's no way to go wrong with this cd. The 101 Strings do a wonderful job of performaning these songs.

Recommendation: I think it would be wise to buy this cd if you love the standards.

I have to quickly disagree with those who are looking for more songs crammed in to what is such a breathtaking album of Broadway love songs. The rendition of the songs on this album and the Broadway singers selected for each piece, just are so beautifully recorded and make chills go through me. Whoever created this album, knew exactly what they were doing. This CD is full of nostalgia and artists who know how a song should be sung. They are certainly not making noise as on some Broadway CD's, but they have created an album that will go down in history for some of us who have longed to see such muscials come back to life in a way....that sadly has become a memory.

I think they need to consider putting one more musical on this CD. This musical would have to be Wicked. What about As Long As Your Mine (from Wicked of course)? I think I would like this CD better if they could put Wicked on it. But of course this may not be true for everyone because obviously my favorite musical of all time is Wicked.

Okay, so I have yet to hear this CD but already I have a quip: Why are there only 16 songs on this CD when the original Broadway's Greatest Love Songs had 20. They're cheating customers out of 4 songs! Also, why doesn't this include any songs from Aida, Triumph of Love, Beauty and the Beast, R&H's Cinderella, The Lion King, or Wicked! And please, "Our Last Summer" from Mamma Mia? Don't get me wrong, I love Mamma Mia, but that is NOT a love song.

      This is an amazing CD. I recommend it especially for those who love Hollywood and Broadway musicals of the 1940's and 50's like "Oklahoma", "Annie Get Your Gun" and "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers". Jason Howard is a wonderfully talented baritone whose singing rivals that of Howard Keel and Gordon MacRae, whose songs he sings on this disc. Every song is well done, and sung with appropriate feeling. Though recorded in a studio, you'd think that "Anything You Can Do," from "Annie Get Your Gun" was from a live theatrical performance, there is so much zest in the interaction between Howard and his female partner. The selections from "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" are particularly welcome, as they are seldom recorded. I can't praise this disc enough!

      I own the Hollywood Bowl Gershwin CD and I love it. I was surprised by it. Play the samples if you can but the singing and sound are clear and crisp and you can understand every word.
