Take a Look
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
Natalie Cole's "Take a Look" is neither a sharp departure nor a close copy of her eight-million-selling 1991 album Unforgettable. She once again sings her daddy's songs, but this time she only does three of them, all obscure non-hits known only to the most fanatic Nat "King" Cole fans. The other 15 songs pay tribute to a wider circle of influences--Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Nancy Wilson, Julie London and Lambert, Hendricks & Ross. The most welcome change is the new confidence the younger Cole now brings to the standard repertoire. Her voice has always had the satiny ease that makes listeners feel comfortable, but on this new album Cole reclaims some of the spunk and playfulness of her R&B hits. --Geoffrey Himes

Cy Coleman and David Zippel's City of Angels is a seductive depiction of 1940s Los Angeles, capturing swinging jazz, torchy ballads, witty lyrics, and even a Manhattan Transfer-like Greek chorus (arranged by ManTran guru Yaron Gershovsky). James Naughton and Gregg Edelman star as Stone and Stine, respectively a tough Raymond Chandleresque PI and the writer who dreams up his adventures. Randy Graff plays Stone's long-suffering secretary and Dee Hoty the requisite femme fatale. Loads of atmosphere and tasty songs such as "What You Don't Know About Women," "With Every Breath I Take," "You're Nothing Without Me," and "You Can Always Count on Me" make City of Angels a modern classic. It won 1990 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Leading Actor (Naughton), Featured Actress (Graff), Best Book (Larry Gelbart), and Best Original Score. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Fun Show, Average Score.......2007-02-21
Fun show, ingenuos concept, so-so score, with one exception. The ballad With Every Breath I Take is brilliant. One of Coleman's best pieces.
Cleverness personified.......2006-10-16
A duet between an author and the character he created, each claiming "you're nothing without me," is just one example of how sharp, witty and clever show is, with an unusual score, jazzy and bluesy and very 1940s, and some of the best lyrics I know.
Fantastic Jazz Musical That's FUN!!!.......2006-04-14
City of Angels is an incredibly fun, classy, and jazzy musical that delivers. Stellar vocal performances are provided by the entire cast, particularly the female end. The fact that Randy Graff was the only female from this cast nominated at the Tony Awards that year floors me. Kay McClelland and Rachel York deserved nods for their powerful solos, With Every Breath I Take and Lost Found, alone. These two songs are also the type of sultry, jazz solos that one would expect in the 40's, which is why the show works. The music is completely period with when the show takes place, and that's why I love it. The best tracks are:
3) What You Don't Know About Women
6) With Every Breath I Take (destined to be a classic)
9) Lost and Found (wonderful solo)
10) All You Have To Do Is Wait (FUN! FUN! FUN SONG!!! Hilarious as well)
11) You're Nothing Without Me
13) You Can Always Count On Me (Randy Graff's Tony!)
Great Jazz-Oriented Score.......2005-06-25
1990 Tony winner for Best Musical, "City Of Angels" contains a great score, filled with jazz-oriented melodies & torch songs. Not all the songs are terrific, but most of the score lends itself to repeat listenings. Best tracks include:
Double Talk
What You Don't Know About Women
With Every Breath I Take [beautiful song!]
Lost And Found
You're Nothing Without Me [the show's hit]
You Can Always Count On Me
Funny
Great cast ... great buy!
I love it!.......2005-02-22
This is one of my favorite soundtracks ever! Since I'm going to be working on music for the show, I'm happy that this is the case. It has been in my CD player for a few weeks now, and there's enough variety for it not to get old. But having read through the script makes the lyrics infinitely wittier. Musicals are supposed to rely partially on the lyrics and partially on the script. This show does that perfectly. Without the script, the lyrics are (apparently) lacking. But without the lyrics, the script is missing something. When you put the two pieces together, however, it's really easy to see why this show won a Tony.

Amazon.com essential recording
There are many, many Andrew Lloyd Webber albums out there, including cut-and-paste compilations and songbooks from individual artists, most notably Sarah Brightman, Michael Crawford, and even Jose Carreras. The Premiere Collection is probably as authentic as you can get in a hits album, however. In addition to the most popular selections from the original casts of Evita, Cats, and Jesus Christ Superstar, the 57-minute album includes two selections from Tell Me on a Sunday (also recorded by Bernadette Peters as Song and Dance), the title tune from Starlight Express, the "Pie Jesu" from the Requiem, and a snippet from the Paganini Variations, thereby allowing you to hear the good stuff without having to spring for the complete albums. Note that the three selections from Phantom of the Opera are the 1986 pop singles instead of the cast recordings, meaning Steve Harley rather than Crawford sings with Brightman on the title tune and Cliff Richard subs for Steve Barton on "All I Ask of You." (Crawford does sing "The Music of the Night," of course.) This 1989 compilation was too early for Aspects of Love or Sunset Boulevard, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is ignored, but these omissions are rectified in the follow-up album The Premiere Collection Encore, and the American-slanted version, The Very Best of Andrew Lloyd Webber: The Broadway Collection. --David Horiuchi

I enjoy all of this music, listening frequently. Some not original cast members, so less than 5 star. Product exactly as advertised.
The Premiere Collection.......2007-01-17
My sister had this and it got destroyed. She wanted an other, This was the only place I have found it!! Very hard to find! I have been to every music store in my area. She loved it!! And was so happy to have it again. Anyone who loves Andrew Lloyd Webber will love this. As it has many songs from some of his most famous plays with the original cast. Great item.
beautiful.......2006-12-21
This CD is a great compilation of some of Andrew Lloyd Webber's hits. If you are just looking for a "quick fix" for your Broadway craving, this is a great value.
Fair Album with 1 starlight and 0 aspects.......2004-07-09
I think this album is F-A-I-R because it has one starlight express song and zero aspects of love songs. This is why i liked the album The reason i said that this is a fair album is that I like Starlight Express better. Song i like are "The Phantom of the Opera", "Take That Look off Your Face", All I Ask of You", "Don't Cry For Me Argentina", "Mr. Mistofflees," "Superstar," "Memory", "Starlight Express", "Tell Me On A Sunday", "Music of the Night", "Another Suitcase in Another Hall", and "I Don't Know How To Love Him". I dislike the following songs:" Track 6" and the last one because the last one was hard to understand and track 6 is instrumental.
Superb collection.......2003-08-11
... It is a collection of the best of ALW's creative efforts, and a collection of great performances. Anyone who loves "Broadway" should have this disk in their collection.

"Everybody's got a right/To their dream." So begins Stephen Sondheim's 1991 show Assassins--and in this case, said dreams involve killing an American president. The characters form a veritable rogues' gallery, including John Hinckley, Lee Harvey Oswald and John Wilkes Booth of course, but also half-forgotten luminaries such as Leon Czolgosz (who killed McKinley) and "Squeaky" Fromme (who aimed for Gerald Ford with an unloaded gun). While Sondheim's lyrics are trenchant as ever, his music, which ranges from Sousa pomp to clever little waltzes, is technically brilliant but also oddly uninvolving. (Many fans prefer the recording of the 1991 Off-Broadway version, though "Something Just Broke," which was added to the 1992 London production, makes its recorded debut here.) Still, there are several high points. In "Unworthy of Your Love," for instance, Hinckley and Fromme wax poetic about their unrequited love for Jodie Foster and Charles Manson, respectively, in a Burt Bacharach-style ballad that's deliberately (I hope!) sappy. And of course as with most Sondheim shows, the cast of this revival--Michael Cerveris, Mario Cantone, Becky Ann Baker, Marc Kudisch, Denis O'Hare--is very good. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Unworthy of This Show.......2007-03-01
Assassins is a masterpiece of American theatre. Through a revue of skits and songs, it examines ideas we don't want to face, and shows us the flip side of the American Dream. The score rates as one of Sondheim's best, and the overall effect, when the show is performed well, is incredibly powerful. For years, people have wanted to mount a production on Broadway.
Given this result, they needn't have bothered.
I am still amazed at how much this production got wrong. The principal cast is nothing short of dreadful: the acting is almost laughably overwrought; the pacing keeps getting disrupted by pauses held too long and lines spoken too slowly; some singers are frequently behind the tempo (notably Michael Ceveris as Booth), while others are painful to listen to (like Jeffrey Kuhn as Zangara and Mario Cantone as Sam Byck); the new orchestrations allow for more musicians in the pit, but are much less effective than the earlier arrangements.
To top it all off, this production includes "Something Just Broke", a song sung by the Ensemble as various "average" Americans of different time periods recalling where they were when the president was shot. The song was introduced in the London production, presumably for people who didn't understand the show to have something to latch on to, but it was mercifully kept out of the published vocal score and libretto. It's not a bad song in and of itself, but musically it does not fit in with the rest of the score, and dramatically it doesn't fit in with the rest of the script. Worse, it is placed right between the Kennedy assassination -- the climax of the show -- and the finale, thus skewing all the dramatic momentum and depriving the show of an effective resolution.
The result of all this is that the comic moments aren't funny, the powerful moments fail to move, and the wonderful music is left ho-hum.
I realize that the extraordinary cast of the original production of Assassins presents a dauntingly high standard for everyone else to compare to, but the college productions I've seen were better than this.
Great. .......2006-11-08
What an amazingly talented cast! Neil Patrick Harris, Marc Kudisch, Alex Gemignani (The new Valjean in the revival of Les Miserables) and of course, the former demon barber of Fleet Street, Michael Cerveris (in the role that won him a Tony)...Just to hear these giants of musical theatre perform together as an ensemble alone is worth the price of this recording. This recording is so wonderfully done, and I can't recommend this enough.
'Unworthy of your Love' and 'The Ballad of Booth' are heartbreakingly beautiful, strange that I say that considering the subject matter, but it's true, those two songs alone will stay with you for days on end. The Ballad of Booth has poetic and tragic lyrics like 'Damn my soul, if you must, let my body turn to dust, let it mingle with the ashes of my country...What I did, I did well, and I did it for my country. Let them cry 'Dirty Traitor!', they will understand later...'. and the hauntingly gorgeous melody that goes with those lyrics is just so well, romantic! But then you have the tongue-in-cheek, slightly macabre numbers like 'The Gun Song' and 'Everybody's Got The Right' with lyrics like, 'Everybody's got the right to be happy. Life's not as bad as it seems! Everybody deserves a little sunshine...' and 'All you have to do is, move your little finger...and you can change the world!'
What a rollarcoaster of emotion! I mean, seriously, who else but Sondheim could pull that off and make it the brilliant masterpiece that it clearly is?
One of my biggest regrets is not seeing this during it's brief run in 2004. :(
Deserves a place in your Sondheim Discography.......2006-07-28
Like other reviewers I was fortunate enough to see Roundabout's revival production but perhaps unfortunate that my total enjoyment of that production may bias my critical listening. I can't help but recall the proprietor (Marc Kudish) caressing a pistol into the hand of each assassin when listening to the opening Everybody's Got The Right.
However, while fans of Sondheim and musical theater will argue over every nuance, I find that both this and the original are excellent in their own way. Yes, the voices in the first recording are more refined, yet this recording seems to better capture the character's mannerisms in the vocal stylization, whether the twitchy madness of Guiteau (Dennis O'Hare) or the depressed howl of Sam Byck (Mario Cantone).
This is a worthwhile recording and one that provides me with a reprise of the excellent staging and acting of this quirky play.
Dashed high hopes.......2006-07-14
Assassins is a fascinating and surprising show. You can't imagine a more unlikely topic for a musical and yet, when you hear and/or see the show, you can't help to be impressed by the entire production. Maybe if I'd never heard the original cast recording, I would have given this a higher rating, but, to be frank, this recording suffers in comparison to the original recording in nearly every way.
While the diction on this recording is often impressive...especially Neil Patrick Harris's...too often it is accomplished at the price of tempo. Too many times the musical director has made the choice to slow down portions of the songs to the point of sluggishness. Absolutely NONE of the performances is superior to the original. That doesn't mean that any of the newer performances are horrible, it's just that they don't measure up. The one who comes the closest is Neil Patrick Harris whom I find naturally charming and vulnerable in anything he does.
The best addition to this recording is Mario Cantone's rant as Sam Byck. Unfortunately, I can't recommend getting this recording based solely on that. The biggest mis-step is the omission of the full, final, Kennedy scene. Hearing it on the original recording for the first time is an absolutely thrilling and chilling experience. Not having it all here is a MAJOR disappointment.
Buy the original recording first and check this one out from the library.
Letdown from the original.......2006-04-10
I have been a huge fan of Assassins since it first came out back in '91. While I've never had the pleasure of seeing the play in person, I've read it several times and listened to the original cast recording so often one can hardly believe it. So when I saw "Broadway Cast Recording" I was thrilled. Then I listened to it. I went from thrilled to appalled.
John Weideman, who wrote the music, seems to prefer the Broadway cast recording--at least he says so in its liner notes. I'm not sure why. While some of the songs are still excellent (like the Hinckley-Fromme duet "Unworthy of Your Love"), many of them are just plain painful to listen to. Most of the time the singing vaccilates between being totally flat of affect (most notably Moore in "The Gun Song") to hyperbolic melodrama. Booth mumbles to the point of near-unintelligibility in several songs; Zangara sounds eerily like the mob boss from 'Johnny Dangerously' that keeps calling everyone "farging bastages"; Moore sings nearly the whole time as if she'd OD'd on sedatives; and Guiteau sounds so stereotypically gay that GLAAD should be suing the producer.
It almost seems as if the cast are not sure what do do with their characters. The cast of the Original Cast Recording hit the characters perfectly--an outstanding mix of suffering, despair, anger and hostility. The Broadway cast can't seem to, in the language of the musical, "connect" to the characters. For me this is a huge failing, as the "charcaters" here are real individuals; if the performers can't connect to them, how can we be expected to?
There are also some content differences between this recording and the original. Several brief additions are made from elsewhere in the musical, and the new song "Something Just Broke" written for the Broadway revival is included on the recording. However, about half of the last act (which is included on the original) is cut out. Sadly, the material cut out is far more moving, unsettling and significant than the material added. Also, "Something Just Broke", while a fine song (and performed better than most of the rest of the material), unfortunately breaks up the natural link between the Kennedy assassination's triumphalist ending and the closing version of "Everybody's Got the Right".
I gave this three stars because I love Assassins. It is a brilliant and unnerving drama. But the Original Cast Recording is immensely superior to the Broadway Cast Recording in its ability to reveal this to the audience. I'm glad it was revived, and I'm glad it won three Tony awards--now it can get the recognition it deserves; but for me, I'll stick to the original version I fell in love with years ago. If only the Broadway recording has found a way to be "worthy of your love"...

Customer Reviews:
Good Stuff.......2007-03-01
I have enjoyed this album on a tape for years and was thrilled to get it on CD. The best of Natalie as far as I am concerned. I especially love her rendition of "Cry me a River." The "Swingin Shepherd Blues" and "Calypso Blues" pull you up on your feet and make you want to dance! All around good jazz numbers written by a variety of great people.
Great Music.......2006-11-03
This is a great CD of Natalie Cole's beautiful singing. Good dancing music as well. (fox trot)
BETTER THAN EVER!!!!!.......2006-08-29
Natalie Cole brings all of her passion into her father's music and more with these jazzy standards. The songs in this collection flow effortlessly from one to the next. She takes the ultimate songs of some of the finest singers and makes them her own. (and then some)
Listen to the fine opening song "I Wish You Love" which has been previously recorded by Frank Sinatra, Nancy Wilson, and Barbara Streisand. Natalie's version of the standard "Swingin' Shepherd Blues" really DOES swing. This one has been recorded in the past by greats like Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie. Natalie's vocal of "Cry Me A River" is unique. She has joined the ranks of the legends: Peggy Lee, Julie London, and Ella Fitzgerald. That jazz tribute, "Fiesta In Blue", has a certain playfulness in it. Legendary artists such as Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, and Diana Ross have sung "Don't Explain". While each of these versions have been great, Natalie's interpretation is the definitive one for me. There is something haunting in her style that brings me back to hear it over again. "Too Close For Comfort" is infectious and rousing. Natalie brings a new energy to her father's song "Calypso Blues". "Take A Look" is a grand diva vocal finale.
The visionary musicians who participated in this collection each add something special to the mix. Artists like Alan Broadbent, Grover Washington Jr., and Herbie Hancock are just a few of these famous talents. This cd is a must for anyone who enjoys a classic jazz vocalist.
Take A Look . . . An Evening With Natalie Cole At The Hollywood Bowl.......2005-08-29
"It is with much love and affection that I present this musical portion to you - the buyer, the listener, as well as friends old and new. It is my hope that you will listen with new ears, for there is something different here that you may notice. I think they call it "attitude." ~ Natalie Cole
This beautiful album is undisputedly one of the first-rate recordings of Natalie Cole. Likewise, this album became gold and earned her another Grammy for Best Vocal Performance. And as always, Ms. Cole has been one of my favorite jazz vocalists in the music scene. On this recording, she has a line-up of the finest musicians like Alan Broadbent (arranger/pianist), Jeremy Lubbock (arranger), Marty Paich (arranger), Herbie Hancock (piano) and Grover Washington, Jr. (sax), among many others.
Her recent concert at the Hollywood Bowl was a huge success! My friend and I watched the first of two consecutive night concerts and truly enjoyed it! She has a terrific stage presence and her performances, accompanied by the fabulous L.A. Philharmonic Orchestra, were superb from the very first two numbers and all-time favorites of mine, "The Very Thought Of You" and "Midnight Sun" to the encores. She so splendidly performed one of the most remarkable tracks in this CD to the delight of the very enthusiastic audience, my all-time favorite and one of the highlights of the show "Let There Be Love," a song made popular by her late father, Nat King Cole, in the forties.
"Let There Be Love"
~ Words and Music by Ian Grant & Lionel Rand ~
"Let there be you, let there be me
Let there be oysters under the sea
Let there be wind and occasional rain
Chili Con Carne and sparkling champagne
Let there be birds to sing in the trees
Someone to bless me whenever I sneeze
Let there be cuckoos, a lark and a dove
But first of all, please
Let there be love!"
This is one CD to cherish and enjoy listening to again and again, and a great addition to your collection of the best female jazz vocalists of all-time. Natalie Cole is indeed an artist for all seasons!
Natalie Takes a Look at Lesser-Known Standards (3.5 stars).......2004-01-14
As difficult as the follow-up to a once-in-a-lifetime project may be, Natalie Cole did a good job after her very own "Unforgettable" CD, a much-celebrated tribute to her father Nat King. "Take a Look" followed two years later, in 1993, and earned her another Grammy, this time for the best jazz vocal album.
Indeed, this CD is jazzier than its predecessor, and although it falls a bit short (it was not a near that big event as "Unforgettable", which led the Billboard Hot 200 album chart for a few weeks), it still presents Natalie in a diverse, classy collection of lesser-known gems. For me, there are still only four tunes here that I heard sung by someone else -- "I'm Beginning to See the Light", "Cry Me a River", "As Time Goes By" (the 'Casablanca' movie theme), and "Too Close for Comfort".
The songs mostly take turns between relaxed ballads ("I Wish You Love") and brass-driven swingers ("Undecided"), with the bluesy "Fiesta in Blue" and Caribbean-tinged "Calypso Blues" most notable stylistic enrichments here.
Arrangements are neat and tidy and players are good -- the most impressive is pianist Herbie Hancock, appearing as guest on three tracks, which are the definite highlights of the album, maybe just due to Herbie's trademark emphatic keyboard touch. Two of them are luscious ballads, "I'm Gonna Laugh You Right Out of My Life" and Billie Holiday's "Don't Explain", and another is the closing title track "Take a Look", where the songstress delivers one of her best performances ever.
This is one of the best albums Natalie Cole made after "Unforgettable", which marked the beginning of her focus on remaking old standard tunes. In fact, other follow-ups exploring more-or-less the same formula ("Stardust") lack the spark and fresh attitude of "Take a Look".

This is a super sweet KoRn album. Thank God they got away from the hip-hop sounding stuff and focused on pure rock in this one.
ONE OF KORNS BEST ALBUMS.......2007-04-10
I think this is one of their best albums. It seems that their first two albums were more metal/nu metal and that's how I like Korn to be most of the time. ISSUES, UNTOUCHABLES, and SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE were albums that were very much alike. The band messed around with special effects with the guitars and I like that stuff, but I like the other style a little better. FOLLOW THE LEADER was an album that was unique and had it's own style. I like their self titled album, LIFE IS PEACHY and TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR. This album was one of my favorites because I like how it brings back their older style. Another thing about this album that I liked was the bass in this album. It really stood out in a way that it never did before in this band. So this one def one of my favorites by Korn and I think the band needs to do more styles like this :)
Korn's Return to Form!!.......2007-03-08
This is Korn's most underrated album. The real reason it didn't do better is that many Korn fans had fallen off by then. Untouchables was not an album many could listen to straight through.
With Take A Look In The Mirror, the boys tried to tap into what made them big early on...and they greatly succeed. This album is dark and full of energy. Even the packaging is reminiscent of the early days.
"Right Now" is a perfect lead-off track. It's full of energy and reminds me of "good god". "Break Some Off" is the same way.
"Counting on Me" slows things down a bit, but is such a great song. Nice and dark. Even the collab with Nas is tight. Many diss because they don't like rap, but "Play Me" is a hard track. The chorus says it all.
"Alive" is from their early days, and is what "Need To" was supposed to be on their first album. Probably my favorite song on here.
"Y'all want a single" is a great diss to the suits who wanted Korn to write a single. Do yourself a favor and check out the video.
"When Will this end" is a great close to a great album. I only wish they would have kept their signature sound. They went pretty soft on See You on the Other Side. This is the only "must buy" from Korn after Issues.
How can you people like this?.......2006-12-24
Ok, I have every Korn album. I love them all but after Untouchables, they have gone downhill. Their music sucks. They think their metal but all they do is just scream and bitch. Johnathan can't even scream so why try? It just sucks. Sure there are about 2-3 good songs on here but thats all. This album and SYOTOS suck really bad. Listen to the old Korn, thats much better.
nu metal sucks.......2006-06-04
Nu metal sucks - its not even metal. you can't be metal with rap and hip hop influenced stuff. rap sucks. numetal is lame. you cant bang your head to this. its tuned down way too much and theres no fancy guitar work?? no solos? not even any fancy guitar riffs? well korn is considered the "best band" in numetal abd korn sucks so therefore numetal is the lamest "metal" genre ever if you can even call it "Metal"
STAY AWAY FROM NU-METAL, they just want your money

Heavy Korn has resurfaced........2007-05-31
This was a step back to "Follow the Leader" days. Some of their heaviest stuff is on this album. "Right Now" may be the angriest song they have ever made. "Did My Time" is one of my favorite Korn songs. "Y'all Want A Single" is a fun, f-bomb flinging romp. "Play Me" is a rap-rock masterpiece. If you liked their early music, this should help satisfy your appetite for heavy Korn music. I hope their new one (Summer '07) is heavier too.

If you are a korn fan then you must add this to your collection.
F*ck the haters.......2006-06-04
Wow...seems a lot of people hate this album. It also seems that a lot of people are just plain stupid :-P
Me personally, I love this album. I'm listening to it now in fact. It's more "KoRn" sounding than Untouchables was, and harder than Untouchables was too.
Funny story behind "Y'all Want a Single?". The producer (or one of the big wigs, whichever)wanted Korn to make a single for the album so they could get some air-play. Korn said FU. They wanted the single done anyway. Korn still didn't feel the need for it. But in the end, Korn said "Fine. We'll make your stupid single." so the made that song. lol the big wigs were like "We can't use this! Too many swears!" and Korn said tough rocks buddy, there's your single.
Funny stuff.
Breath of fresh air or last gasp?.......2006-05-08
First off, this is one of my favorite Korn albums, behind Issues and Korn self-titled. That doesn't mean that I don't like their other albums, but of all the albums they have come out with, this is one of their most truthful. Untouchables was good in its own way, and tried to be depressing, but the voice synthesizers, and over-production just made it feel phony. This album is by no stretch of the imagination deep or thought-provoking, but its just plain enjoyable heavy metal. This album is, like many reviewers have already said, the anti-Untouchables. Almost every song on here is easy to play onstage, and sure to get the mosh-pits going. To the people who give this album bad grades because they thought it wasn't deep enough, then you aren't a true Korn fan. If Korn remade the same album over and over, you wouldn't even be able to buy it, because they would have faded out long ago. I also must say that this is the album that got me into Korn. A friend was giving away some of her cd's and gave me this, and once I heard Lets Do This Now, I knew I wanted to be a fan. It didn't get too many buyers, mostly because it was self-produced, and for me that makes it all the more easy to appreciate. They haven't recorded an album this heavy and kickass since Korn st and Life is Peachy, when they were still wearing Adidas outfits, and its a breath of fresh air. It is debatable whether its a breath of fresh air or Korn's last gasp, as for me, after hearing See You On The Other Side, im still torn. I am almost sure that they will never record anything this heavy again. This is also Brian Welch's last album with Korn, and its nice to see he went out in such a nice fashion; his guitar work on here is no-holds-barred heavy, which is nice after Untouchables, which wasn't his or Munky's heaviest record, to say the least. I can't see how any Korn fan can't appreciate this record, at least the real ones, the ones who loved Korn self-titled. Now to the song ratings.
1 Right Now: 9/10 Right from the start you know what kind of record this is going to be, and unlike the mis-leading Here to Stay on Untouchables, it stays this way. An aggressive, hate-filled song.
2 Break Some Off: 9/10 Another aggressive track, with some more screaming curtesy of Mr. Jonathan Davis. Unlike its predecessor, there is some melody here. A short song, so it isn't going to out-stay its welcome, which is true of the whole record. People complaining about this albums shortness, need to stop and think; this is a heavy record, whithout too much thought, too go on for too long would be to get grating.
3 Counting on Me: 7/10 Not bad, but I usually skip it. A bit emotionally heavy, dark, but sort of forgettable.
4 Here it Comes Again: 9/10 At first I didn't like this track, but it has grown on me to become one of my favs on here. It's a mix of singing and screaming, but unlike Break Some Off, its mostly melodic. A hidden gem on this album.
5 Deep Inside: 7/10 Sorry, but unlike most people, I don't really dig this track too much. Bit too repetitive, and the emotion doesn't feel genuine here. Also, notice how most of the emotional songs on here haven't gotten great ratings? Its because this isn't meant to be emotional album, and any emotion on here feels out of place.
6 Did My Time: 9/10 Of course, there ARE exceptions:) A gem of a song, not one of their best, as many reviewers here would have you believe, but still really good. A dark, depressing, emotional song, with amazing guitars on it to boot.
7 Everything I've Known: 7/10 A weird song, but not in a good way. I can't believe that they made this song a single. There are so many better songs on here. The vocals are kind of interesting, and the structure is kind of unique, but doesn't hold my attention, and I doubt it will hold yours.
8 Play Me: 7/10 This is kind of the laggy part of the album, and it shows. I normally hate rap, but for some reason I don't hate this song as I should. I guess its just the novelty of hearing this dude rapping over heavy metal. Also the first rappy song since Follow the Leader, and I don't mind that one bit.
9 Alive: 8/10 A classic Korn song, but again, doesn't hold my attention much. It was written before Korn self-titled came out, and makes you wonder what it would have sounded back then.
10 Lets Do This Now: 10/10 Arguably the best song on the album, but maybe I am biased, since ever since I heard this song I have wanted to own every Korn album. The best fight song I have ever heard (sorry Marilyn Manson). It is so catchy, and I don't know why they didn't make it a single, because it doesn't really have too many swears, would have made a better single than Everything I've Known, thats for sure. The chorus is one of the best Korn has ever done, up there with Ball Tongue, Daddy, Good God, Seed, Make Me Bad, and Here To Stay. Man, I don't understand how anybody CAN'T like this song.
11 Im Done: 8/10 This song has warmed up to me a bit, but it still isn't all that great. Maybe its because its the sandwhich song between Lets Do This Now and Ya'll Want a Single, but I, and probably you, will want to be skipping this one.
12 Y'All Want a Single: 9/10 When I first heard this song I thought it was a joke, like K@#*%!, but it has meaning. You will have to watch the video, the un-cencsored version if you can, and you will see what I am talking about. If you can't find the video without the full lyrics, don't bother, its too annoying listening to Suck That! over and over again.
Overall, this will be remembered as one of Korn's best records, especially now that they have gone in a totally different direction with SYOTOS, Korn fans who initially bashed this record might appreciate it that much more, because hardcore albums like this by Nu Metal bands are becoming rarer by the minute.
Overall rating 90/100
Recommended.
"Take a Look in the Mirror" -- Waste of a CD.......2006-03-18
Although I'm not a die-hard fan of Korn, I like a lot of their music. This CD, however, was TERRIBLE! A couple of songs were alright but IT ALL SOUNDS THE EXACT SAME!!! Is that even legal to produce a CD like that? Anyone with a brain would skip this CD, and go buy a case of beer with the money they would save. If you want to hear one or two of the songs, get the greatest hits... you'll be better off that way.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.
If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."
Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05
This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.
Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18
The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!
He's done it again.......2002-07-15
Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.
This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.
Way to go Michael, you've done it again!
Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10
There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.
This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.
This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!
A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09
I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

Of all the L.A. postgangstas, Warren G's probably the most pop-oriented and least hip-hop-committed. As with his sharp, multiplatinum debut Regulate...G Funk Era, his follow-up, Take a Look over Your Shoulder, is hardly concerned with rapping at all. It's such an afterthought, in fact, that he's happy doling out verses to unknown rhymers like K-9, Malik, and Knee-Hi--or better yet, to R&B crooners like Nanci Fletcher or Nate Dogg (the voice behind his huge hit "Regulate")--even if it means sublimating his own voice in the process.
But like his brother, Dr. Dre, Warren is a rapper only by circumstance and a producer by passion. His personality comes through in ultraslick funk-enhanced rewrites of familiar, road-tested tunes: The Isley Brothers' "Cooling Me Out" becomes Warren's "Smoking Me Out," and Marley-by-way-of-Clapton's "I Shot the Sheriff" becomes Take a Look's terrific first single. It might make Warren and crew the world's richest cover band if only he weren't so good at rethinking grooves and repackaging oldies as pop gems for the '90s. If the entire album were as tight and tuneful as the standouts (those mentioned, plus Nate's showcase "Annie Mae"), Take a Look would be a masterpiece. As it stands, Warren's still a great pop singles artist. And with his new record going light on the gangsta tales, that's apparently all he's aiming for. --Roni Sarig

Possibly Warren's Most Underrated LP (Rating: 8 out of 10- -4.0 stars).......2007-06-06
I'm a laid back type of guy, who enjoyed laid back type of music, especially from the west coast. To me, I find a lot of Warren G.'s music to be laid back and fit my prefrence of my enjoyment, and that is why I listen to his albums. Like everyone realized, Def Jam hardly promoted any west coast artists on thier label, despite his multiplatnum debut Regulate...G Funk Era. True, this album isn't his first, but it holds it's own as well.
Like most of Warren's albums, what stands out to me is the production. It's the type of west coast production that anyone can vibe to. "We Brings Heat" is the type of west coast production that I love so much. "Transformers" carries another dope beat. A personal favorite of mine is the song "Relax Your Mind" featuring Real Tight, more of that laid back feel here.
Lyrically, Warren is still good. "Reality" and "Can You Feel It" show off his lyrical skills. The EPMD remix of "I Shot The Sheriff" is dope lyrically and production wise.
What weighs this album down for me is first the skippable tracks. I wasn't feeling the origonal version of "I Shot The Sheriff". It's not a bad job, but really don't think Warren is good at producing reggae sounding tracks, as you can see Erick Sermon did a better job remixing it, and the two tracks are side by side in comparison. Also some of the guest appearances aren't all that good as well, although others were nice.
But overall, I find "Take A Look Over Your Shoulder" to be a highly underrated LP for 1997. It sucks that Def Jam didn't push their west coast artists, and the fact that this is out of print shows how much they care about this LP. If you're a fan of west coast rap music, I recommend that you check this out. Peace.

Warren Gets The Little Brother Treatment {4.5 Stars}.......2007-01-25
I challenge you to name 10 producers from the west coast that were better than Warren G in the 90's. There's DJ Quik (yes, I put his name first...Dre is overrated), Dr. Dre, and...well..... While there are other notable producers that may have been just as good, like DJ Muggs, Daz, Battlecat, Sir Jinx, Bud'da, Soopafly, E-Swift (Alkaholiks), Shock G, and Johnny J (I know I've left out a ton of legendary westside beatsmiths, but I'm trying to make a point, not write a novel). I wouldn't necessarily say that any of them were BETTER than Warren Griffin III. As a matter of fact, the problem Warren G runs into most is the fact that he's so heavily slept on (his own brother, Dr. Dre, didn't take him seriously as a producer). Even the editorial reviewer of this album grabbed a pillow and took a snooze -- I noticed that Amazon has a knack for posting bogus editorial reviews, but that's another story. Anyway, I think what turned people off to Warren G is because he took 3 years off from his classic debut and a lot people expected the Regulate II LP. Instead of trying to duplicate that album, he went in a different direction (something that I actually respect people more for doing -- more "artists" should do it). The truth is, this album is off the charts. Despite being totally ignored by his label (Def Jam), this joint still had a few classics (We Brings Heat, Transformers, What We Go Through, I Shot The Sheriff (EPMD Remix), Back Up, & Smokin' Me Out) getting spins on the radio. The quality of the album kept it afloat because, trust me, there were NO promo dollars put behind it. And on top of all that, with the exception of one or two fillers, the rest of the tracks are strong.
There are a few tracks on the album that should've been left off the album. "Annie Mae" suffers from lazy production and the original version of "I Shot The Sheriff" is skip material in my book. As a matter of fact, a lot of the production is so laid back that I'd have to say that it's almost too smooth. Don't get me wrong though, the beats are still top notch. Some will tell you that Warren's rhymes aren't up to par, but the editorial review summed it up best when it said: "...like his brother, Dr. Dre, Warren is a rapper only by circumstance and a producer by passion..." With that being said, I don't really expect much from him on the lyrical tip (nor does he -- hence the abundance of guest rappers).
Take A Look Over Your Shoulder (Reality) is easily Warren G's second best album. The production is on point and the guests all do a great job of sharing the load. Warren G is a capable rapper, but the focus for me was on the beats. I recommend adding this one to the collection. Amazon is selling this for less than a buck. If that ain't a steal, I don't know what is.
Standout Tracks: Back Up Feat. K-9 & P-C, Relax Ya Mind Feat. Reel Tight, What We Go Through Feat. Mr. Malik, Perfec & Bada**, Reality, To All D.J.'s Feat. Mr. Malik, We Brings Heat Feat. The Twinz & Da Five Footaz (My Favorite), Smokin' Me Out Feat. Ron Isley, Transformers, and Young Fun Feat. Knee-Hi & Jayo Felony
Good...But It Can't Touch Regulate.......2006-07-17
3 years after LBC rapper Warren G released one of the best hip hop albums that the world had seen (or will ever see), Take a Look Over Your Shoulder hit the shelves. The g funk era was on its way down by this point, but since Warren G reinvented g funk in a way that no one else did back in '94, why not take a stab at it again? What could go wrong? A lot of things actually. The album feels rushed with odd hook choices, tired rhymes by Warren and some mediocre samples. However, the album sports one classic, 2 near classics and some solid songs all around. The album isn't bad. It just can't touch Regulate.
The first classic is Warren's 3rd best song (behind Regulate and This DJ) in my opinion, Transformers. A laid-back synth laden song with a silky smooth bassline, this song is amazing. Hooks are usually one of my favorite parts of a Warren G song, but here Warren opts to repeat a synthetic robot sound (hence Transformers) that isn't the greatest. That said, the hook is short enough and the final verse where Warren shouts out areas throughout the LBC is just too good. Unlike the perfect Regulate and This DJ, Transformers is flawed but not flawed enough.
We Brings Heat, a would-be classic, however, is. With one of g-funk's most unconventional beats, Warren had a big chance here. A fantastically eerie sound is created with a slow cool piano, very evident live drum usage and an odd raspy hook. Lyrically, Warren G is solid, but the real stars are Wayniac of the Twinz and female rapper Jah Skillz of 5 Footaz. So why not a classic? After the final verse, the hook is replayed one too many times. I would've much preferred just hearing the beat, one of the best Warren was created. Instead, the raspy sound distracts from the beat and becomes downright annoying. The 2nd near-classic is Relax Ya Mind with finally a perfectly implemented hook and a smooth beat all round. Straight g funk from beginning to end. The problem here, however, is the ridiculous opening verse. Warren assaults us with too many different topics, boldly stacking "this uptempo beat and this g funk rhyme," "it's all about the collard greens" and " it's a baller's society" all within the first verse. Without even a second thought, Warren shifts madly from one idea to the next. It's just silly.
Other songs worth mentioning are the overrated I Shot the Sheriff, which in my opinion is the most unoriginal song Warren has done. It's worth listening to, but Warren is much more creative than this. Its remix is decent. Smokin Me Out (also an unoriginal sample choice), Annie Mae and Can You Feel It round out the list of good/okay songs. They are either hurt by horrible opening raps from Warren or odd hook choices. I've been very critical in my review because Warren G is my favorite rapper, g funk my favorite kind of music. This album is definitely worth picking up if you're like me. But don't go in expecting something as flawless Regulate.
So underated..........2006-03-04
It boggles my mind to this day how this CD failed to garner anyones attention after the superb CD that was Regulate: The G Funk Era. Perhaps it was the delay between his last album and this album? Or perhaps people have no taste?
Warren G serves up another great CD with non-stop quality (well not exactly, the skits are not needed and once you hear them once you need not hear them again) and his beats are as equal to what he released on first cd.
The classics:
Annie Mae - Warren G tags with his life long buddy Nate Dogg and drops another hit. Nate Dogg's hook is amazingly smooth and Warren G is at ease. Warren and Nate talk about a trick they once knew.
Smokin' Me Out - One of the best beats on the CD, Ron Isley delivers the best hook on the CD, and Warren G calmly raps to another classic of his own. Warren talks about a girl smokin' him out.
Reality - Probably my favorite rap on the album. Warren talks about people talking junk about him.
To All D.J.'s and Can You Feel it: Love both these raps, don't know which is better but they are both very good and are just behind Reality in quality.
The rest of the raps are of four star quality, possibly higher. It's a shame that this CD is long forgotten, because It almost matchs Warren's original CD in quality (Although Regulate and This DJ are still his best efforts to this date). I highly recommend this item to anyone who is a fan of Warren G or still listens to Regulate to this day.
take a look back at g funk.......2006-02-17
I still bump this cd in my cadi but there are a few songs I skip thas why a gave it 4 stars. Regulate g funk era is a good album from start to finish. i loved the I shot the sheriff song when it came out, but no when I listen to it, it's kinda boring. But the whole album is straight g-funk that only the Warren to the G can give u so dont sleep. Westcoast LBC music always gonna be in my ride, I grew up in Cali so that g-funk is gonna be in my cadi till I die.

Product Description
With an impressive resume in rap that includes membership in the legendary Juice Crew (along with Marley Marl, MC Shan, Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, Roxanne Shante, and Craig G) and a verse on the 1988 classic posse cut "The Symphony", Brooklyn's Masta Ace is truly an underappreciated rap veteran and underground luminary. Two years after "The Symphony", Ace released his debut album "Take a Look Around" on rap's version of the Motown label, Cold Chillin' Records. The album spawned a hit single and video for "Me and the Biz" which popped up on many popular rap video shows in the late 90s for nostalgia's sake and featured the now infamous Biz Puppet. The album has Marley Marl's keen production aura all over it, and features choice cuts from D.J. Mister Cee, Big Daddy Kane's DJ, who in later years would be The Notorious B.I.G.'s DJ and a well-known New York radio personality. "Take A Look Around" would prove to be Ace's only album released on Cold Chillin', but it was only the beginning of his colorful career in music. He would go on to release "Slaughtahouse" in 1993 and "Sittin' On Chrome" in 1995, both on Delicious Vinyl and both under the moniker 'Masta Ace Incorporated.' Later, he would release "Disposable Arts" on Yosumi Records in 2002, and "A Long Hot Summer" in 2004 on M3 Macmil Music. Although Master Ace's style would change significantly with his subsequent releases, he always brought albums to the table that appealed to a wide range of Hip Hop listeners. Cold Chillin' Records and Traffic Entertainment Group proudly present Master Ace's "Take A Look Around", available for the first time as a double disc set, including the original album, and a plethora of substantial bonus material, from artwork to audio. With all the songs being digitally re-mastered, and all the additional photography being supplied by the man who took the photos (George DuBose), this project has been thought out, done right and handled with care, and we hope you enjoy it.
