Long quarantined to the province of obsessive record collectors and historical nitpickers (rock scribe supreme Lester Bangs--a mutant spawn of those two groups if there ever was--loved them like family), the Comedian Harmonists are making their stateside debut some 70 years after their heyday. For a spell, the Harmonists were the toast of pre-WWII Berlin, flooring audiences with their dizzying harmonic acuity. But their harmonies are only half the story. The Comedian half of the CH equation comes from--among other tricks--an astute knack for vocal mimicry. On Duke Ellington's "Creole Love Call" they imitate kazoo, muted trumpet, trombone, even theremin to positively alien effect. But the Harmonists' good humor belies the exacting skill and recurrent hint of sorrow and longing that pervades their work. Their rendering of Cole Porter's classic "Night and Day," with its paradoxical taskmaster's precision and soft sentimentality, accounts for one of the many shining moments on this compilation. Imagine Elmer Fudd crooning from atop a piano in a Berlin cabaret and you'll get an inkling of the Harmonists' singular charms. --Matt Hanks

I love this CD - it has the most important songs that the Comedian Harmonists did and the quality of the remastered recordings is very good. The songs are so phenomenal that I just keep listening to them. This CD is a great way to become familiar with this unique group, especially before seeing the Barry Manilow musical based on their experience now on its way to Broadway. I also recommend the movie "The Harmonists" (in German).

Just as comedians so often make good dramatic actors, these 'comedian' harmonists were the finest of their time. A friend of a friend passed me a cassette tape of them in Germany in 1995, and I listened to it for years without knowing who they were, awed by the complexity of their harmony and the simple charm of their melodies. I think Matt's reference to Elmer Fudd can be explained by the similarity of their musical styles to early music of Warner Brothers and Disney cartoons; the Harmonists loved American jazz and blues records, as you can tell by the list of titles on this CD. Fans of the band should see the German biopic, The Comedian Harmonists, for a decent telling of their tragic story--at the height of their fame in Germany, and on the brink of international success, the blight of Hitler's dark parade ruined their careers and dashed their hopes of spreading their music across the Atlantic to the country that had inspired so much of their ground-breaking music.

Even if you don't understand their German lyrics, the music of the Harmonists will cheer you, especially if you have any nostalgic feeling for the old tunes we hear in the earliest Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck cartoons. A musician will tell you there's nothing trivial about their talent -- singing stuff like this is *hard* -- but you don't have to be a musician to love this stuff.

Sui generis is right!!! Six voices that blend so harmoniously - it's a joy to hear!!! Regretablly, the group broke up because some members were Jewish and migrated before Hitler's policies were enforced throughout Germany. Interestingly enough, the last surviving member of the group, Roman Cycowski, died about two years ago, and was the oldest living cantor in the U.S. at the time of his death. One can only speculate about the group's popularity and influence if allowed to remain together.

The Comedy Harmonists were an a close harmony group who recorded in Germany from '28 to the late '30's. They were harassed and force to disband because of Nazi disapproval of their semitic origins as well as their avant-guarde, jazz-oriented material. They sing here in German and English doing everything from folk songs to Tea for Two with clarity, musical grace and lightness. Their comic songs are very deft and witty. If you enjoy close harmonics, you will find this recording a revelation.

If, inexplicably, one is limited to one Comedian Harmonists' CD, this is probably the one to get. It combines better than other CDs the best, the best known, and the most representative sampling of their work. Its only drawback -- and some might not consider it so much a drawback but as an example of how broadly representative this sampling is -- is that it includes a few selections from the two sextets formed after the Nazis forced the separation of the three Aryan from the three Jewish members, and neither group was anywhere near as good as the original.

Somehow, although I didn't live during the time of these recordings or the wide popularity of the Comedian Harmonists and others of its kind, this group's music ignites in me a deep sense of nostalgia and historical passion, as it were, that few other recordings can match. This is a surprisingly good refurbishing of the original recordings of the 1930s, and most of the Comedian Harmonists' best songs are included. Many of the songs are sentimental, others are lively and funny, others are serious; but all are deeply nostalgic. This group folded in the late thirties because of the rise of the Nazis in Germany, but their legacy remains to be one of the most important in the annals of popular and folk music history.

The Comedian Harmonists Became a Worldwide Sensation in the Late 1920's and 30's.       Delightful music, wonderful harmony and clever use of voices. Saw the movie called The Harmonists and became enraptured with these men. There must be 50 cd's to choose from, but this one incorporated their best work.

          It's a happy situation that the Comedy Harmonists are still very much a presence in the world of cinema and CD. I give a special welcome and recommendation to the five volume series of which this CD is Volume 2.

          As a music lover who can remember buying and listening to the Comedy Harmonists on the original little quickly-spinning 78s, I can assure all those reading this that CDs such as the one here under review give the best possible recreation. Apparently the group sang at only moderate volume. All the 78s I once possessed had only a low sound signals on them. The grooves barely moved. Sometimes the surface noise was more audible than were the performers. So it has been a miracle, worth waiting for, to discover that modern restoration work can remedy all this, allowing the group's vocal balance, blending and sonority to be easily and clearly appreciated.

          I also await the reissue of many more of their recordings. This five volume series seems to comprise all their recordings that have found their way to LP and CD, but many of my one-time favourites have been neglected. Anyhow, some of their best work, including "takes" in French and English, are found on this 51 minute CD.
