You're My Thrill

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com's Best of 2001
On You're My Thrill, vocalist and pianist Shirley Horn teams once again with strings arranger and conductor Johnny Mandel, resulting in yet another spellbinding album that defines romantic ecstasy. Horn's magical ability to imbue the softest utterance with enough emotional poignancy to make a grown man weep is elegantly complemented by Mandel's haunting string arrangements and Horn's longtime trio-mates, bassist Charles Ables and drummer Steve Williams. Songs like "You're My Thrill" and "My Heart Stood Still" find Horn wonderfully capturing the stillness and allure of flickering candlelight. Yet Horn is also friskier on You're My Thrill than on previous albums. If she makes your heart stop on the misty "The Very Thought of You," she'll make your feet tap with joy on her bluesy rendition of "The Best Is Yet to Come" and the sultry "Sharing the Night with the Blues." Here's the stuff that divas are made of. --John Murph

5 out of 5 stars a classic.......2006-01-14

One of the best, most consistantly compelling albums of Shirley Horn's career. A Cool Jazz Vocal standard against which all other Jazz vocals must be judged. A worthy companion to the better known "Here's to Life".

Shirley had that slowed delivery. In one of his last sessions Miles Davis said "You sure like 'um slow, Shirley" (before 1964, so did he!). Johnny Mandel had particular difficulty slowing down the violins, making them slow enough to match Shirley's "squeeze every ounce of feeling" delivery.

Yeah, many of her late albums sound similar, but so what? When you've got a good formula, stick with it! Even at that, this one stands out. Stunning.

You can't listen to these pieces by anyone else ever again without thinking of these arrangements.

"The Best is Yet to Come" "You're my Thrill", "Solitary Moon" stand out, but the whole album, even with the occasional scooped tone, the whole album doesnt' contain one bad cut. The best version of "Why don't you do Right?" since Jessica Rabbit!

Romantic late night music.

Highest recommendation.

4 out of 5 stars Worthy sequel.......2002-03-07

The Horn/Mandel collaboration on 1992's "Here's to Life" is no less sublime, inspired, and miraculous than the best work of Sinatra/Riddle ("Only the Lonely") or Miles Davis/Gil Evans ("Sketches of Spain"). There's not a false note on that album, which for many listeners is the most essential recording of the past 20 years, if not since "Kind of Blue." "You're My Thrill" is certainly a worthy sequel, and some listeners may even prefer the walking bass tempos that appear on several tracks featuring just Shirley and rhythm section. But the high points, once again, are the nuanced harmonies and whispered counter melodies Mandel is able to incorporate with the trio's offerings--orchestrations that succeed not merely in being unobtrusive but actually contribute to the sense of silence, of meditative reflectiveness and suspended animation. Overall, the results on this collaboration are not quite as consistent and satisfying as on the earlier meeting, and there are far fewer spinetingling moments. Shirley's voice evidences a bit more strain, the song choices are not quite as surprising and revelatory (Peggy Lee's reading of "You're My Thrill" on the album "Black Coffee" is one for the ages), and the programming concept--going for a bit more "variety"--is not as daring. Pick this one up, but by no means should it be a priority over "Here's to Life."

5 out of 5 stars She's alright with Me!!.......2001-12-05

I first heard about Shirley Horn when I bought the CD, "Here's to Life", and promptly dismissed it, to my regret. I don't have it any longer. Lately, thanks to watching the Jazz series, I have been checking out the works of the great jazz masters, and came across this CD, and don't regret getting it. "You better love me while you may", and "The Best Is Yet to Come" will probably be my favorites on this CD. "Why Don't You Do Right" is another favorite. Now, this lady may not have one great voice, but she delivers a heck of a punch in my opinion and sits up there with Billie and Ella. I guess the opinion of what you have and make do with it applies in this instance. At any rate, this CD is worth the stars it gets and then some. Hats off to Ms.Horn for this spectacular CD.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2001-11-16

I love Shirley Horn, and to me, I think this is an excellent album. I don't understand some of the previous poor reviews, but as the saying goes, "You can't please all of the people, all of the time". This happens to be one of my favourite cds from a female jazz singer/pianist, and as much as I like Diana Krall, she really has nothing on Shirley. Shirley's voice is rich, and full of emotion, and her piano playing is wonderful. "My Heart stood still" is such a beautiful track, just listen to the part where the orchestra, Shirley's voice and her keyboard tremoloes fuse into a heart-pumping climax. This is a wonderful album, and deserves all of the 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Another strong Broadway by the Year.......2006-08-20

Scott Seigel's concerts, Broadway by the Year gather a group of the current crop of Broadway performers and turn them loose on songs from Musicals that opened during 1 year on Broadway. It helps that 1953 was a strong year musically, with Bernstein's Wonderful Town, Porter's Can Can, Kismet and Me and Juliet from Rogers and Hammerstein. Jule Styne also chimed in with Hazel Flagg which contains one almost standard "Every Street's a Boulevard in Old New York. Some great stuff on this album, wonderfully sung as almost always. I love this series and hope to acquire each and every one at some point.

This album is the first one I bought. I just added three more of her cd's to my collection. Her music is so moving and relaxing, I listen to it whenever I get stressed. Yeah, I listen alot!! She has a way of letting you feel as if you are actually living in her song as she sings. Would recommend to anyone. Absolutely AWESOME!!!! Glad to have found her.

      5 out of 5 stars Neo-classic Shirley Horn.......2002-04-15

Shirley Horn uses her range and power with such sublety and restrained passion that she evokes the very image of "cool jazz." This should come as no surprise. The late Miles Davis heard her years ago when she was a struggling club singer and helped launch her career. This albumn builds upon her considerable strengths and is contemporary without being trendy or gratuitous. If you are a fan of Ms. Horn, you should have this latest addition to her impressive body of works. If you are new to this artist, this would be a good place to start. And if those up-and-coming young jazz divas continue to develop their talents over a life-long career in and around the greats, they may someday sound like this.

4 out of 5 stars Two more classic Day LPs debut on CD.......2004-10-07

Another two of Doris Day's albums are remastered and re-issued here by Sony Music with original back and front sleeve artwork.

"You're My Thrill" - holds great poignancy in relation to Doris's recording career as it was her first solo LP (long-play). The songs that featured on this compilation album were recorded between December 1948 - June 1949 and include her `Top 10' single "Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered". Originally issued as an eight track 10" LP the album was repackaged and renamed "Day Dreams" in 1955 on 12" format with four bonus tracks - both the "Day Dreams" cover artwork and these songs are also included in this release.

"Young At Heart" - In 1954 Doris and Frank Sinatra joined forces for this remake of the acclaimed 1938 picture "Four Daughters". Appropriately, Columbia Records released an album of songs from the movie which included new recordings by Doris: "You My Love", "Ready, Willing And Able", "Hold Me In Your Arms", "There's A Rising Moon" and "Til My Love Comes To Me" which was based on Mendelssohn's "On Wings Of A Song". As Sinatra was exclusively signed to Capitol, Columbia included tracks he had previously recorded for them during the `40s. Fortunately, "One For My Baby (And One More For The Road)" and "Someone To Watch Over Me" which he sang in the movie were amongst his Columbia archive treasures.

This CD also includes bonus tracks /raritites such as Doris and Frank's `Top 20' American single "Let Take An Old Fashioned Walk" and three other enchanting `50s solo tunes by Doris - one of which is notably the rare British single edit of "Soft As The Starlight" which debut worldwide on CD.
