Yule B Swingin'

Editorial Reviews

Louis Prima's "What Will Santa Claus Say When He Finds Everybody Swinging?" opens this 1998 collection, and 13 cuts later it closes with the patron saint of highballers everywhere, Dean Martin, crooning "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm." In between, there's Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Kay Starr, Johnny Desmond, and Nancy Wilson. Also along are some truly big bands, including Glenn Miller, the eternally hip Louis Armstrong & the Commanders, Les Brown & His Band of Renown, Lionel Hampton, Pete Fountain, and Ralph Marterie & His Orchestra turning out a catchy little tune called "Dig That Crazy Santa Claus." If you think this is just pure nostalgia, you probably think Claus is an imposter, too. --Martin Keller

It's hardly all "swing," but it'll set a mood, and as a party mix, you'll only need to hit the skip button once or twice.

Picking up where 1999's Yule B Swingin' left off, Too collects a host of jazzy and mainstream songs that run from legendary figures such as Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, the Dorsey Brothers, and Duke Ellington to sophisticated ladies Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. More mainstream pop music by Bing Crosby and the Andrew Sisters, along with the rather bland June Christy version of "The Merriest" and the ever self-effacing Dean Martin version of "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer," tend to detour from nuggets such as Armstrong's wonderful "Christmas in New Orleans" and Joe Williams's "Let It Snow." Still, for a nostalgic big band Christmas collection that only occasionally burns down low, Yule B Swingin', Too! will get you in the holiday spirit. --Martin Keller

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!!!.......2006-11-30

4 out of 5 stars Excellent holiday swing.......2003-12-09

With the exception of Dean Martin, this CD is full of fun christmas music you wont hear on commercial play-off-the-list Radio. Many songs are danceable.

5 out of 5 stars Cool Yule..............2003-12-08

This review refers to the "Yule B' Swingin" Too!" CD(Hip-O/Universal Music).....

"Baby It's Cold Outside"....but you won't even notice with this CD on your changer. It'll warm you through and through with it's oh so recognizable voices and musical styles. From the opening track of Louis Armstrong's classic rendition of "Christmas In New Orleans" to Billy Holiday's wonderful "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm", you'll be smilin and swingin to all these fun tunes.

I was looking for something fun, upbeat and just a little different from the usual holiday fare, and wow! did I find it with this one. Fans of swing will find this to be a real and rare treat. All these legendary greats performing some fabulous holiday tunes in a style that that never gets old. It's a match made in music heaven.

Some of the wonderful sounds you'll be delighted by are Louis Prima's "Shake Hands With Santa Clause",(this one will really get you jumpin),..."Baby,It's Cold Outside", a provacative duet from Ann Margaret and Al Hirt...Dean Martin sings "Rudolph, The Red Nose Reindeer"(appropriatly enough,)..Ella treats us to a moving "White Christmas", and Lionel Hampton and His Orchestra entertainingly perform "Boogie Woogie Santa Claus".There are 13 tracks in total, including such greats as Benny Goodman, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, June Christy,Joe Williams, Bing Crosby with The Andrews Sisters and of course... Duke Ellington.(See buying info for complete list of songs and artists).

Many of these recordings are quite old but sound great on this CD. It's a mix that will just have you wanting to get up and swing...and if you're new to it..don't worry.. the basic 'swing step' is included in the booklet that comes with the CD!

Have a 'hip' holiday.......Laurie

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Fun!.......2002-12-04

I just purchased this CD and think it's the best Chrsitmas album I own. So much fun to listen to -- it'll be great for a party or for just bopping around the house. You don't have to be a big fan of Swing to enjoy this album. My two-year-old applauds at the end of each song!

4 out of 5 stars Buy it on sale!.......2004-12-08

14 clear tracks. Our favs are Louis Prima & Louis Armstrong, #1& #2. They're upbeat, fast & different. Then it bogs down. Kind of loses the "Swingin'" concept and moves into a jazzy feel. But, still a good listen if you find a copy cheap enough.

5 out of 5 stars What Will Santa Claus Sing?.......2003-12-17

This retro album never gets old. Many of the artists seem to be winking at the listener, almost making fun of the whole idea of Christmas music. Kay Starr's Everybody's Waitin' for the Man With the Bag sounds like the kids are waiting by the chimney for their drug dealer.

If you like upbeat holiday music, this is a great choice. The only song that isn't cheerful is the sad, haunting What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? by Nancy Wilson. So have a cup of Christmas cheer and dig this crazy Yule CD.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Fun Fun!.......2003-12-08

My husband and I picked up the CD a couple of years ago on the sale rack. What a find! We love it, and I am buying it to send to my mother this year for Christmas. This one will please multiple generations - our kids love it too!

5 out of 5 stars Really Fun Holiday Album.......2002-12-28

A great collection of upbeat, happy and swingin' tunes from (my guess) mid -to- late forties to fifties. Even if you are a "modern" rock&roller, this is definitely a "hip-o" record for the holidays. No sad songs here, but Lous Prima swinging with Santa, Louis Armstrong having fun in New Orleans, Kay Starr swinging with the Santa man, etc. It's funny, but all ages of hipsters really dig this album (very rare with everyone's diverse tastes). No joke, buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars Can't get it out of my head!.......2002-12-12

Every year I pop this CD out of the Christmas box and it rarely leaves my CD player. Quirky and fun, this CD is an absolute riot! Classic swing sound with a bit of a twist. Buy it!
