The Heartbreak Country Girl.......2007-05-13
With heartache that can be felt through her voice, the CD starts with her debut Classic, "Once A Day", written by Bill Anderson, the man who "discovered" her. Also included are six other Anderson penned songs, "Nobody But A Fool (Would Love You)", "I Can't Remember", "Then and Only Then", "You And Your Sweet Love", "Cincinnati, Ohio" and "I Never Once Stopped Loving You" (co-written by Bill's duet partner, Jan Howard). The disc includes only one song penned by Connie, herself, "I'll Come Running". As much as she's been known for her deeply devoted religion as well as for her music, this CD includes only one Gospel song, "How Great Thou Art". Connie covers Don Gibson's "Just One Time" and the Gordon Lightfoot penned "Ribbon Of Darkness" (also a hit for Marty Robbins). Wish this CD also included these other hits by Connie during her RCA years: "Tiny Blue Transistor Radio", "Darling, Are You Ever Coming Home?" and "Where Is My Castle?"
The Greatest female country singer ever.......2006-10-10
I grew up listening to the Album entitled : Miss Smith Goes to Nashville. By Connie Smith. I am a professional musician because of music like this. We wore out many a copy of this album by playing it over and over again, all day long, day after day, for years. I'm trying to find a copy to buy right now so I can play it till the end of my years on this earth. I love Connie Smith. She's a female Faron Young vocally, in my estimation, and I loved his music just as well. He was another block in country musics' foundation. Artists like her and him built country music. I cannot say enough about this paramount star called Connie Smith. Bill Casey
A stellar singer.......2006-03-31
One of the best singers ever, regardless of genre. This album contains 20 superb Connie Smith numbers, all original releases. Of course, there are always a few songs that could have been included, but others would argue that these suffice. In any case, this is a great selection with great sound. Included here are: "Ribbon of Darkness", "The Hurtin's All Over", and "Then and Only Then". Of course, "Once A Day" and "Cincinnatti" are also here. While Connie's voice is outstanding, it is also noteworthy to see that many of these songs are penned by none other than Bill Anderson. A classy album from a classy Lady.
Classic sixties country.......2002-09-02
Connie had a very powerful voice but knew how to use it to best effect. This collection does not quite live up to it's title - it omits Where is my castle?, one of her best hits - but it's still by far the strongest hits collection available of Connie's music. Where is my castle? can be found on Super hits, but anybody wanting that track may be better waiting to see if it is on Connie's next compilation, probably in the RCA country legends series.
Apart from that omission, all Connie's big hits are here, including Once a day (her first and biggest hit), Ain't had no lovin', Cincinatti Ohio, Just one time, I never once stopped loving you and so many others.
This is classic sixties country at it's best, with prominent steel guitar, but ultimately it is Connie's voice that stands out. I enjoy her music so much that I bought the Bear Family boxed set, but it only covers the first half of her career at RCA, so even it doesn't contain all the hits to be found here.
For anybody who is interested in sixties country, this is essential. Connie was not as big a star as Tammy or Loretta, but she could have been a bigger star than both of them, as her voice has much more pop appeal than theirs. She was not interested in crossover success and has no regrets, even now. She was, and is, just a simple country lady with a very special voice, letting the quality of her music stand on it's own merit.
Essential - Yes It Is.......2002-07-13
The liner notes of the CD read: 'Dolly Parton once said "There's really only three female singers in the world: Streisand, Ronstadt and Connie Smith. The rest of us are just pretending." A nice observation by Parton, Connie Smith does possess one of the more unique and beautiful voices in country music today. ESSENTIAL SERIES does a good job of covering Connie Smith's lengthly career. This is a good place to start your Connie Smith collection. There's quite a few hits here, "Run Away Little Tears", "I Can't Remember", "Love Is The Look You're Looking For", "You and Your Sweet Love", I never Once Stopped Loving You", "If It Aint Love (Lets Leave It Alone)", "Just One Time", "Once A Day", "The Hurtin's All Over" and more. There's also a great biography of her in the liner notes. 20 hits in total. Overall you can't lose with classics like these. This is essential for your collection!

Album Description
Connie Smith is considered by many fans and critics to be one of the best and most underrated vocalists in country music history. Though she is often compared with Patsy Cline, Smith actually has a distinct style all of her own, and sings straight from the heart. Connie's first two LPs were originally released in 1965 and are now reissued here together on one CD for the first time. Her debut album, included on this CD, was recently given a 5 star rating by 'All Music Guide', who said the LP "features her blowing through the Nashville Sound production like a down-home Streisand fronting The Lennon Sisters" This new CD includes Connie's debut single, 'Once a Day', which hit the top of the Country charts, reigning as number one for eight weeks. Smith's follow-up, 'Then and Only Then', also featured here, reached number 4 in the charts. Connie Smith became a member of the 'Grand Ole Opry' in 1965. She continues to perform with the Opry and in 1998 returned with her first LP in many years. This 2-on-1 includes the original artwork and sleeve notes from both original LPs, along with rare photographs and new, updated liner notes. Hux Records.

Customer Reviews:
Connie at her best!.......2006-11-04
Connie Smith is, to me, the greatest female country singer.
The early recordings have a freshness and liveliness. I love them! Her voice is so strong and pure.
"Tiny Blue Transistor" is what you'd call "bubble gum" country, it's unique in the genre. And, this collection includes the classic track: "Once a Day". But, as you will see when you've listened to these two albums, there's much more to Miss Smith than "Once a Day"!
A TREASURE!!.......2006-10-25
The first two Connie Smith albums put into one CD!!! How lucky can anyone get! This collection shows why Connie knows no peer when it comes to country music. She is the real thing and next to Patsy Cline, the best female singer in country music. Her peers even confirm this! What a voice!! This is what REAL COUNTRY MUSIC is, not the makeshift, bubblegum pap we're subjected to these days (which I won't listen to at all). I know everyone has different tastes in music but it escapes me why this type of music isn't appreciated more and given the respect that its due. At least with this collection (of which there are no filler songs in the bunch), Connie Smith represents a genre which I'm afraid is long gone and we'll not see again. But she is a perfect reminder of what REAL COUNTRY MUSIC IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE!

VERSATILE CONNIE.......2006-05-22
This proves Connie can sing anything. This CD covers her country releases but unfortunately is minus some of her finer moments during her foray into C&W such as "I'd Be A Legend In My Time and They'll Be No Teardrops Tonight". But this UK import is very good indeed and should be in everyone's collection. The sound quality is excellent and the care that was put into this project is evident. A welcome addition to the Connie Francis library.
Connie's Country - Great country.......2005-08-23
I have always been a huge Connie Francis fan but was surprised to see "Connie's Country" on Amazon, I never knew she had a country album out. The CD is great, Connie's incredible voice and style give these country classics new life. Again, she crossed a music boundry/style and has improved on it. I actually like many of these re-recordings better than the originals. If you're a Connie Francis fan, you will truly enjoy this CD.
The small country.......2003-11-16
"Connie's Country" is another CD with Connie's hits compiled by Spectrum Music (UK). Actually, it is not a re-edition of any of her regular MGM recordings but a set of her 18 country-style pop songs recorded throughout 1959-1968. Apart from the fact that she recorded also country songs in duets with Hank Williams, Jr. and Marvin Rainwater, we don't even get here the complete collection of her solo country recordings. Her two best country pop singles: "My heart has a mind of its own" and "Jealous heart" remain out of this disc, as well as "Everybody's somebody's fool", "Drownin' my sorrows" , "He thinks I still care", "I wish I had a wooden heart" , "The wayward wind" and other. It is strange that some of these songs are spread among the other compilations by Spectrum Music (e.g. "Who's Sorry Now" and "The World of Connie Francis"). What was the problem to collect them in one place?
Connie proves here that she is the best in any kind of pop music, so five stars for her! But only three stars for Spectrum Music for its incomplete work: 47-minute disc is pretty too short and does not contain the best of Connie's Country. However, the disc's title fits its contents, this is unfortunately a small Country.

Not to be missed.......2007-06-24
I never tire of listening to this CD. I saw the show in Atlanta several years ago and then again in Nashville--featuring Mary Murfitt herself--and think it is wonderful. I'm always surprised at how such a hilarious/silly premise can set the stage for a moving exploration of friendship, relationships between parents and children, and the joy that comes in facing and conquering our fears. I remember sitting at the side of the theater in Nashville and watching the audience, which previously had been rolling with laughter, be spellbound when the cast began "Songs My Mama Sang" with that gentle mandolin strumming in the background. It was magic--and this "little" show with great writing and thoughtful performances made it happen. I only wish it were performed more often, but then it takes a really talented cast to make it work. There will always be the CD, though.
Excellent, fun music.......2000-05-03
This is a strong woman's musical with great music that doesn't get tiring to listen to. I'd recommend it for anyone wanting to perform a great musical for theatre.

Customer Reviews:
The end of an era.......2005-01-14
Most of Connie's big hits were for RCA, after which she had a few more big hits with Columbia before joining Monument, where she had only limited success. Nevertheless, these were the last significant recordings by Connie for many years so they marked the end of an era.
The stand track here is Smooth sailing. It should have been a major country hit for Connie but was only a very minor hit. T G Sheppard eventually covered the song and took it into the country top ten. I love T G's music , especially his version of Smooth sailing, but it isn't any better than Connie's original.
This set also includes Connie's excellent covers of I just want to be your everything (Andy Gibb) and The wayward wind (a chart-topping hit for Gogi Grant in America in the fifties and again for Frank Ifield in Britain in the sixties). Elsewhere, there are many fine songs though they are not as strong as the best of her RCA music. My favorites among them are There'll never be another for me, Don't say love, Lovin' you baby and Lovin' you .lovin' me, but I enjoy all the songs here.
While this is not the place to begin a collection of Connie's music (Essential Connie Smith is the best starter), this is a welcome addition to the collection for all fans of Connie's music.
This One Is Not "ESSENTIAL".......2002-05-05
By the time Connie arrived at Monument in the late '70s, her Billboard days were coming to a close. This CD contains her final 2 (of 39) chart hits, I "Want to Be Your Everything" and "Loving You Baby". High marks also go to " Coming Around", "Smooth Sailin'" and especially "Don't Make Me Dream". That one is another example of Connie giving some solid, unsolicited female to male advice. The rest of this release does not match the quality of her "Essential" album. Just as some Ann Rule books are for everyone and some for her fans, this release is for Connie lovers. The recommendation here is to try "Essentials" first. If that makes one a Connie lover, then proceed. "Lovers" can add a fourth star.
You don't need this that bad.......2002-04-07
The only reason you might need this is for collection purposes for the sake of owning Connie Smith's Monument singles. At the time she was trying to crossover. The music definately suffered. At one time this was the only Connie CD on the market. Now that the Essential has came on the market, this is rather obsolete. Maybe look for a used copy or something.
Something missing.......2001-10-11
Lady Smith made 2 Lps for Monument before retiring. Both are gems. Here is a composite of some of these pearls. Some of the songs on this CD have too much echo added to it and several really good songs have been left out, particularly her version of YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE. By far the best version of this song I have ever heard. The original was sappy, Connie makes this an almost spiritual experience. But then, anything Connie Smith sings is an event. Let's hope to hear much more from her.
Great collection, but a few milestones missing........2000-02-25
This is a fantastic collection, as any Connie Smith album would be, but there are some classics from that era missing. My only guestion to Sony Nashville is why didn't they include the great Connie Smith classics "You've Got Me Right Where You Want Me", "I Got A Lot Of Hurtin' Done Today", Til I Kissed Ya'",and "I Never Knew What That Song Meant Before" ? Wait a minute: I have a great idea... Let's have a "Volume II"! I'm always ready for another "Connie" collection!

Classic Tracks from a Country Queen .......2005-03-15
This album is a reissue of vintage RCA recordings Connie Smith made during her decade at that label. They include one of her last songs for the label ("Love is the Look You're Looking For") before she moved over to Columbia and her outstanding remake of Doug Kershaw's "Louisiana Man" which is one of my top five favorite Connie tracks of alltime. Of course the history-making "Once A Day" is on the album, still the longest stint at number one by a female vocalist ever on the Billboard country singles chart. The first seven songs are among Connie's greatest hits, "Young Love" a duet with Nat Stuckey was a remake of the Sonny James classic that alas was not particularly successful although they sing well together. The album concludes with two covers Connie did of Connie Francis' "My Heart Has A Mind of it's Own" and Anita Bryant's "Paper Roses", both recorded years before Susan Raye and Marie Osmond respectively topped the country charts with remakes! There aren't enough Connie Smith CDS around in my opinion, she's one of the finest singers Nashville ever produced and continues to wow audiences today at the Grand Ole Opry and on tour.

The Very Best Female Country Singer. Miss Connie Smith........2006-08-13
Let me start by saying I've been a fan of Old Time(Classic)Country for some time now.The King of Country George Jones,Willie,Merle,Loretta,Waylon,Johnny,Dolly,etc...
Well I've only just discovered the very finest female voice in Country in the last six months. How she escaped me for all this time is a wonder. Well, good things do indeed come to those who wait. And Connie Smith certainly was well the wait. I first bought The Essential Connie Smith, and was knocked off my feet by this down home angel. After listening to the twenty songs off The Essential over and over. I knew I had to have more of Connie's music. And the Four CD Box Set Born To Sing most definitely fits the bill. Connie's voice is pure heaven. This is a real Country girl! What a voice. If you love Country music, especially Country of days gone by. You will love this terrific box set. I highly recommend it!
Connie's first nine albums, plus extra tracks.......2003-01-28
This boxed set contains everything Connie recorded from 1964 to 1967. Bear Family sets sometimes include lots of alternate takes, these are limited in this box to two alternative versions of I'll come running and one alternate version of Burning a hole in my mind, although it does include four French language tracks, which are versions of her American country hits. Because this set stops at 1967 and there is no certainty of a sequel, it does not replace your hits collection, although this was Connie's most successful period so a lot of her own hits are here, including Once a day, Ain't had no lovin' and Cincinnati Ohio.
Of the nine albums whose tracks are included here, the first and third are available separately as a twofer. That twofer was released only a few months before this box. I've already reviewed that, and as I explained, those are Connie's two best albums from this period - but the others are also of a very high standard, but they contain plenty of covers. I enjoy listening to covers but not everybody gets the same pleasure as I do.
There are some gospel songs, including Wings of a dove, Farther along and When God dips his love in my heart. There are pop songs, including Downtown (Petula), Born a woman (Sandy Posey), The night has a thousand eyes (Bobby Vee) and It's now or never (Elvis). But mostly, there are country songs, many written by Bill Anderson and Dallas Frazier. Among the many country covers here are You ain't woman enough (Loretta Lynn), Ride ride ride (Lynn Anderson) and There goes my everything (Jack Greene, Engelbert Humperdinck and Elvis). Connie also covered Po' folks and I love you drops, both hits for Bill Anderson. Although Bill wrote songs that he allowed others to have hits with, he kept some for himself. Connie loved them so much that she recorded them anyway.
This is a well-presented set, as anybody familiar with Bear Family would expect. If you are already familiar with Connie's music, you will know what to expect. If not, I recommend that you start with The Essential, which I've also reviewed.
Connie Smith's voice is beautiful, but that is not all........2001-12-06
Connie Smith has a beautiful voice, but there is much more which makes her voice the best female voice ever recorded, such as a wider vocal range and greater richness than any other female singer, not to mention her own individual sound and super intensity. However, what makes her voice really stand out is that she has a wide range of vocalizations. That makes her voice THRILLING! One never knows what she will sound like when she sings. In at least one song in this collection she sounds extremely like Patsy Cline, and in another one can hear Connie Francis inside her voice. The other CD of Smith's recordings called "Connie Smith & Miss Smith Goes to Nashville" are of her first and third albums, not first and second. This four CD set has the first few years of Smith's album recordings, but not nearly all of her RCA recordings. It consists of about a dozen of her first albums, a little less than one third of all her recordings. It is a shame country music radio is now owned by giant corporations who will only air recordings by young singers. Connie Smith if aired would show up today's singers as rank amateurs. After listening to this collection one can only scream for MORE! PLEASE TURN ALL HER RECORDS INTO CD'S AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!
It's about time!.......2001-03-15
This is a long overdue boxed set on the fine work of Connie Smith. It is a complete catalog of her first 3 years with RCA. I beleive it contains material that has not been previously released. This is definately Connie at her finest. The sound is excellent, and the enclosed booklet has a detailed history of Connies career during this time frame as well as a gold mine of photos. If you are already singing Connies praises, you will treasure this goldmine of music. The clarity of Connies voice, the great songs and music will truly provide lasting enjoyment. If you weren't previously a fan of Connies, you will be after hearing this set. A five star rating is not enough, I give it a 10!
Country Legend Connie Smith's RCA Recordings.......2001-03-15
For anyone who ever said "I could listen to Connie Smith sing all night," well, here's your chance. Those wonderful obsessives at Bear Family Records have reissued the country great's complete recordings from her heyday in the mid-Sixties, when the singer was tearing up the charts.
Connie Smith was a housewife with two children when she began her recording career under the patronage of singer/songwriter Bill Anderson. Her first single, "Once A Day," was a smash hit, and for the next three years she was one of Nashville's biggest female stars. Smith had a perfect voice for country music, with the tell-tale "sob" in her voice that made many of her songs almost heartbreakingly beautiful. Most tellingly, Smith was even more admired by her peers than her fans. She walked away from a successful career in the Seventies to raise her children and because she grew increasingly uncomfortable with the nature of the music business.
Connie Smith fans once had to search far and wide for her RCA recordings, but they have been more accessible in recent times. RCA released a solid one disc "best of" four years ago and her first two albums were reissued in their entirety in 2000. "Born To Sing" is a four CD box and contains everything she recorded for the label. Its a wonderful package, with first-class sound, and which includes Bear Family's usual comprehensive booklet. Although there is a lot of terrific music here, this boxed set is probably best for Smith's hardcore fans; casual fans should probably stick to the single disc compilation. Still, this is a superior package. Its nice to have all of Connie's RCA classics and rarties available, and to see her receive the recognition she deserves.
Incidentally, Connie Smith is still going strong as of this writing (March 2001). She performs regularly at the Grand Ole Opry, and she recorded a fine CD for Warner Brothers in 1998, produced by her current husband, Marty Stuart

A new fan of the Canadian Prairies/Country/Folk performer........2001-08-21
As of this moment I haven't bought a cd yet, but I can tell you all that Connie Kaldor puts a lot of emotion into her music, as well as energy into her performances. Having had the luck to stumble onto the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival while on a bike tour of Nova Scotia, I was fortunate to catch Ms. Kaldor's set which closed out the entire week of musical events. Her charisma, humor and boundless energy would have been entertaining enough, but her songs of simple melodies yet heartfelt lyrics was icing on the cake. I was treated to songs from her last album such as "Winter" and "Life Has A Mind Of It's Own", as well as a hilarious and unrecorded parody of "The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)" about life on the internet that reflected the good-time atmosphere that Ms. Kaldor brought to us that evening. So I'm about to purchase "Love Is A Truck", which I'm sure I'll enjoy and bring back memories of my trip. To any CK fans out there, I highly suggest trying to see her in person, and to music fans who have had enough of what's being called "pop music" today, I suggest trying a change of pace. To me, Connie Kaldor is like a Canadian Maria McKee (pre-1997 at least), who I also recommend.
She has done it again!.......2000-08-01
With each listening her albums all become more remarkable. This is no exception. A truly amazing singer/songwriter/performer. She covers the emotional spectrum. She has numerous other albums available from Canada.
