Maybe in a Dream

Editorial Reviews
Jazz Times
Davenport is a trumpeter and crooner. His voice is soft, understated, and conversational. He's a darn good trumpeter and the trumpet interludes keep things from getting sappy. The tunes are mostly in a slow to mid-tempo range.

In the three years since 2003's Lullaby for Liquid Pig, singer-songwriter Lisa Germano found both a comfortable new home for her recording career (Swans leader Michael Gira's Young God label) and the most challenging topic to engage her muse yet: death in all its various incarnations, be they physical, spiritual or intellectual. Whether celebrating her father's successful open heart operation ("Too Much Space"), grieving the passing of a beloved pet cat that's been the focus of several earlier songs ("Golden Cities") or lamenting the musical vacuum left by the tragic death of Jeff Buckley a decade past ("Except For the Ghosts"), Germano's tales flow as if from a dream state, cast in a suitably ethereal sonic landscape that's graced here by the presence of Smiths/The The/Morrisey guitarist Johnny Marr. Given the subject matter, it's no surprise to find her wit notably subdued, yielding an album whose spirit can seem as delicate as its heart is bleak.-- Jerry McCulley

Album Description

A gifted lyricist and powerful singer, Germano is also a talented multi-instrumentalist, playing the violin, piano and guitar with equal aplomb. Her poignant, heartbreakingly beautiful songs often possess such an intensity of feeling that listening in can be a little frightening at times.

Germano began recording in the '90s, first for Capitol Records, then for a number of very productive years with 4AD. Most notable among these releases are the fantastic Geek, The Girl, and Excerpts From A Love Circus. These missives of emotional damage and impossible love are extremely personal documents, simultaneously self-effacing and confrontational.

Over the years Germano has received acclaim from all over, from independent-oriented fanzines to Spin, Rolling Stone, and the rest. In 2003 she released the absolutely beautiful and wrenching audio journey Lullaby For Liquid Pig, featuring woozy paeans to alcohol, fantasy landscapes and out-of-focus dramas. Other projects over the years include the OP8 album-- a collaboration with Giant Sand and Calexico-- and stints with artists as diverse as Eels, David Bowie, Neil Finn, John Mellencamp, Simple Minds, Iggy Pop, The Indigo Girls and Sheryl Crow, among others.

In The Maybe World features some of Germano's best work to date. Typically, her self-produced arrangements are uniquely inventive, her lyrics cut right to the core, and her voice carries gently into a world where distinctions between beauty, loss, love and pain tend to blur.

5 out of 5 stars I'll wear this CD out!.......2007-02-21

I bought this CD after hearing an interview with Lisa on National Public Radio in Dallas,Texas. I had never heard of Lisa, I'm ashamed to say.
What a wonderful CD this is, and what an incredible talent is unearthed. Her voice, her lyrics, and her music, all tell the tale of someone who has been searching for one's self, and has found sadness and lonliness along the way. I discover new feelings, new emotions every time I listen to it, which is often!

5 out of 5 stars A cd for a bookshelf.......2007-01-06

Lisa Germano's "In the maybe world" is a cd of charming music and soulful, heartfelt lyrics. I keep the booklet with the lyrics separated from the cd package, on the bookshelf next to my favourite poets' works.

5 out of 5 stars clearly among the best of her albums.......2006-11-09

Somehow I have always thought that Lisa's music is a head above even the most respected female singer-songwriters... There is not much point in comparing artists, of course, so I will simply say that her work continues to sound outstandingly profound, evocative and timeless. This album is definitely further proof of that. I count several of the new songs to be among her best work - silent, melodic, harrowing, soothing, ironic, bitter, all that in her typical delivery and inventive musical sparseness. The standouts to me so far are: The Day, Too Much Space, In the Maybe World, Red Thread, A Seed, After Monday... amazing, wonderful winter music as the cd cover suggests.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting Hatred of a lovers heart!.......2006-09-29

Once again Lisa Germono Proves she has her own sly style, and defiantly sings to the beat of her own drum. She has created another beautiful album of sorrow, heartache, and joy, mixed with dark pleasures. With her haunting melodies and sweet and sour lyrics, you have to love her honesty. As in my personal favorite "Red Thread". Her brutal bluntness is only surpassed by her unabashed vulnerability. She stays in tune with her roots, and original style, but still brings you something totally new, and leaves you wanting more! She can make even the most muttled off keys, sound dulcet and in tune with her seductive style. Love it! Love the honesty. Love Lisa Germono!

- Nick Alan

5 out of 5 stars Powerful emotions, fantastic music.......2006-07-26

This is Lisa Germano's latest offering, and it seems as if she's looked back to her previous work, and took all the best bits and poured it into this great little record. Little, in the sense that it is rather short (just over 30 minutes).
On this album you will hear songs reminding you of the best bits of Geek the Girl, Love Circus, Liquid Pig and even Moon Palace; lyrically, Lisa tackles some heavy and powerful emotions, like death, self-loathing, relationships gone bad, etc. The production is more 'raw' than on her 4AD albums, but that helps the overall effect, I think. An album not to be missed!

3 out of 5 stars Shut Up and Blow.......2007-02-13

I first saw Jeremy on Emeril Live! and was really impressed with his trumpet playing. Of course they don't show much of the musical guests on that show but it caused me to want to hear more. Sad to say, Jeremy has it in his head that he's a singer as well as a trumpet player. He's not. The voice is weak and slightly wobbly. Reminds me of Herb Alpert. His horn playing is MUCH better than his singing. I wish he'd come out with an all instrumental album. Till then, I'll pass.

5 out of 5 stars Mellow like his dad.......2003-05-10

He is soft and mellow. Great choice of songs for one album. Trumpet goes with his territory. Turn the lights down and have your sweety over for an evening in. Invite his dad in to play the trombone for you.

5 out of 5 stars Jeremy, Part Two.......1999-08-05

Jeremy Davenport's second outing confirms his vocal and instrumental talents and his good taste. It all adds up to a tasty collection you can enjoy over and over again from an artist who doesn't need to sell, as he already has the goods.

    5 out of 5 stars Crooning/trumpet jazz a la Chet Baker.......1998-12-09

Davenport is doubtless one of the greatest rising stars on the jazz scene

    5 out of 5 stars A great american singer / composer.......1998-09-11

I first listened to Davenport in New Orleans in 1997. At the first opportunity I had I bought his first CD, which I have listened for thousands of times since then. Now this second album only reenforces my impression that Jeremy is a legitimate successor of the great american singers and composer like Gershwin and Porter.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Album, but No Vocal Fireworks.......2005-09-20

This is a beautfully rendered album and Joni's voice is pitch perfect. She sings every note as written. But she takes no interpretive chances and there's no vocal fireworks. The real accomplishment here are the splendid arrangements by Jeffrey Osborne and Geoff Love - two men who never met a huge orchestra they didn't like. The lush, layered arrangements are spectacular. The musicians are also first rate and for such a large gathering there's a fantastic cohesiveness. Though her singing is pleasant enough, Joni's voice is basically the 101st instrument in the entire ensemble.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Standards!!.......2003-02-15

This is a great album of classic standards with lush orchestrations. Joni's voice is incredibly smooth and expressive and the selections are some of the best of the Jerome Kern era of classic songwriters. My favorite is Imagination. Best version I have ever heard...as a matter of fact many of the tunes are my benchmark arrangements. If you are a fan of the 30's-50's classic love songs and ballads, this is for you!! Great for Valentines Day. Romantic stuff. This was one of my favorite albums on vinyl as a kid. Now I can get the CD. Yeah!

5 out of 5 stars Joni James at Abbey Road!.......2002-07-23

Miss Joni James swept away on a veritable ocean of violins!
This classic LP remastered in pristine sound with tender torch tunes rendered "close to the microphone" by one of the 1950s most popular singing icons. Recorded in London at the famous Abbey Road studios with those lush, sweeping Acquaviva arrangements. Joni's most divine moment! (Tacked on to the original album are 6 tracks, also with the 100 Strings orchestra, of songs from her Jimmy McHugh tribute LP.)

16)"Tell Me It's Not True" - Stephanie Lawrence of Blood Brothers

These are all great songs but I don't think the best singers were chosen to represent them. But they are all wonderful and enjoyable tracks taken right off the cast album of each of their shows.
