Recording now for a couple decades, Diane Schuur's singing has matured with age. She now fills out her middle and lower registers in ways that enhance her formidable beginnings. Over the years she's moved easily from small combos to large and swinging bands.

For her third release on the Concord label she revels in late night moods and matters. The album's thirteen songs were written specifically for Schuur by Barry Manilow, who also co-produced the set. It's a good match, as both Manilow and Schuur have drawn from or even immersed themselves in pop material as well as jazz. A song like "Stay Away From Bill" owes as much to Tin Pan Alley and Broadway as to more traditional jazz realms. Elsewhere, the settings mix a range of nocturnal rhythms and colors, from the light bossa-nova of "I'll Be There" to the saucy swing of "Southwind" and the torch balladry of "Good-bye My Love." The album closes with one of a handful of duets, this one with none other than Manilow himself, who offers up nicely nuanced subtleties in his pairing. --David Greenberger

Minutes to Midnight stands to defend Linkin Park's status as the hardest-rockin' softies in mainstream music. Like its predecessors Hybrid Theory (2000) and Meteroa (2003), Minutes to Midnight flexes plenty of decibel-heavy muscle ("Given Up," "Bleed It Out," "No More Sorrow") and made-to-order, melodic radio fare ("Leave Out All the Rest," "Shadow of the Day," "In Pieces"). But for all its volume, Linkin Park likes to paint its heart openly on its sleeve with suspicious sonic drama, as in the palpably saccharine "Valentine's Day." Fortunately, co-producer Rick Rubin brings all these elements to pinnacle effect with the surprise "Hands Held High." 5 out of 5 stars Watch Out! The Hybrid Theory Fans are Bawling Hysterically!.......2007-07-16

Because Linkin' Park left them in the dust. Sure, we have Given Up, No More Sorrow, and the infectious Bleed it Out here, but since Linkin' Park found a totally different way to convey their feelings besides screaming, all the angry fans that once liked them have no place to go. And, it's come to this. They have to blame Linkin' Park for moving on to a different sound. They couldn't handle the new sound. And, it's a shame. Because, no matter what, Linkin' Park delivers quality music. And, I wouldn't want them to turn into the generic materialistic rappers who rap about the same, and quite a few of people are now getting tired of them. I'd rather want what they deliver here. Just know, if you say that this album totally sucks, you're saying that Chester & Mike's feelings suck. You're saying that the Katrina victims suck. You're saying that the talents of the members of Linkin' Park suck. But, we all know that this band is wonderful. I don't know about the rest of the downers, but I'm moving on with Linkin' Park to their new sound. And, it doesn't have to be an evolution, it doesn't have to be an upgrade. It's just a new sound, coupled with some more in-depth lyrics. Sad that their earlier fans can't get that. Either way, just know that if you get this album, you will be hearing something much different. And, it's a host of good songs, along with a bit of profound thoughts & political biases (yes, politics). Linkin' Park has done a good job with this album, and don't be offended by my review, it's just my opinion. I just think that Linkin' Park has done a fantastic job with their album, from the Wake, all the way to their tribute at the end. It's good.

Like the rest of the people here, I wasn't sure what to make of this CD the first time I heard it...but after listening to it a few times, it hasn't left my CD changer yet.
"Bleed it out", "No More Sorrow", and "What I've Done" are my favorites. "No More Sorrow" is even a little reminiscent of Metallica. Overall great CD!

You have to give it to Linkin Park. As easy as it can be to make fun of their dramaticism and over-emphasized angst, they made two albums that I can still have fun listening to even today as the twenty-something that they allegedly wrote Minutes To Midnight for.

However, I'm just not sure what my problem is as their 2007 listener. Yes, it's more mature, less breakdowns, more themes that deal with life today and not life back when I was 15 (maybe with the exception of "tell me what the f*** is wrong with me!" - the clean-mouthed cds were much more creative in their self-expression). The songs were catchy in places but did not pack the energy of the old stuff. They seem to be paying tribute to all the bands that the twenty-somethings listen to and respect, but they can't really hold a candle to these bands in their musicianship nor in their songwriting. You may come to see that all the distortion may have covered some weaknesses on their part.

"Leave Out All The Rest" was a pleasant listen the first time through, as was "Valentine's Day." The two "heavy" songs on the album (yes, just two) I mildly enjoy but they just seem like a different band. Though not overly impressed with "the radio song" at first, "What I've Done" has been one that I actually cling to now because it feels like a natural song for them to write.

It could be my fault...maybe I'm realizing too late that they were always a little cheesier than the rest, and it's just nostalgia that keeps the first two records spinning. It's a noble thought, but other bands have been much more successful in developing their sound and not losing the elements of that sound that made them great in the first place. I don't see this record making any lasting impact. MtM feels like a former great going through an identity crisis.

When I heard this CD the first time I did not enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed LP's older CDs. I have to be honest and state that I was disappointed. Fans had waited so long for LP to release new material only to find that they had changed so much. I undertand that change is good but I think they were too drastic and it kinda leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth. They mentioned that they no longer wanted to be part of the rap-rock "nu metal" genre but their old sound is what made them. To have them turn their backs on it sucks. After having listened to the CD more often, I can say that this is a decent CD, but not up to LP's standards. I am not sure what I feel about the CD anymore and sadly, being confused about your favorite band's latest CD is not a good thing.

I still love LP and they are still one of my favorite bands but I hope they go back to their roots in the future.

Having read many poor reviews I was relieved after listening the album for the firs time. No doubt that it is different, but I'd say different in a positive way. I believe that it's great to experiment and search for unexpected approaches. The album is less aggressive, but the lyrics still are still trembling..

The only thing that I missed was Chaz + Mike combo, which worked great in previous releases. This time it looks like it's Chaz's album and Mike was busy with Fort Minor. Another thing - explicit content. I was really proud of LP for revealing emotions without that, cause it's the easiest way, and now.. For that and because LP fans had to do 4 years without new releases - a four.

I have been a fan of LP since I heard the premier of One Step Closer on former south Florida rock station 94.9 Zeta (RIP Zeta). I can sit and listen to there albums repeatedly and not ever got tired of them. Seeing as I still love One Step Closer that should prove that. However the new album has not hit me the same way the older one did (even Re-animation and I am not a fan of remix albums). I can understand wanting to go in a new direction, I can understand revamping styles due to the genre they excelled in dying off for the most part. However, the album does not sound well put together the verses seem to be an obvious continuum of words they appear to have little thought or feeling to them. When listening to there old album when you hear Chester screaming or Mike rhyming you can feel that they believe it. It sounds as if it was something they came with on the spot from the heart. This feels extremely rehearsed and put together quickly to fill a gap between albums. On top of that, the few songs on the album seem that their only point is bashing the current leaders of our country (USA) and the war. Which we have enough of that we do not want to hear it any more whether you believe in it or not. I can honestly say after buying this album I have tried listened to about half a dozen times hoping something would jump out and draw me back in but the only song I can stand to listen to on the album was the first single which is a shame knowing the history of excellence in this band. If you bought this album and enjoyed I envy you, as it is hard for me to except that this album was created by Linkin Park. When reading this review, please keep in mind it is just that a review, my personal opinion. Do not try to argue with me, as this will probably be the last time I look at this page so your words will fall of deaf ears.

5 out of 5 stars Best LP Album Yet ^_^.......2007-06-06

Friggin HOTT. Different, yes, but hott. All I can say is that it was well worth the wait for this album. There's actually still some of their old sound in it, though not as much. "Given Up" and "Bleed It Out" are much like their original sound... then you've got some awesome guitar solos throughout the album, and the E-Bow on "No More Sorrow" made that my choice as "favorite song". "In Pieces", my other favorite, is sort of a power ballad... the great thing is how it shows how great Chester's voice is. "Hands Held High" is pretty much all Mike rapping, but the words are powerful... that song and "No More Sorrow" seem political, another new characteristic for LP. The only song I really didn't care for that much was "In Between"... not the best single on the album. Mike's a better rapper than singer. :P
As for these losers complaining that it doesn't even sound like them... screw you. So they changed part of their style. How many songs did you expect them to make using the Nu-Metal sound without escaping that annoying "hey, this sounds just like their other song" comment? It's good they changed. A wise move and an awesome album. Kudos to you, LP. Keep it coming!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Not For Fans of Strictly Nu Metal.......2007-05-21

People's reviews are really disappointing me here. It reminds me of all the people who complain that Korn isn't heavy anymore now that they're finally making some great (though overlooked) albums. Linkin Park is doing the right thing here. They're trying to leave behind the Nu Metal genre that has pretty much fizzled out. Without this move, they probably wouldn't be around much longer. Luckily, they did the smart thing and expanded their sound. Does it sound different? Yes. Is it still Linkin Park? Yes. I remember reading that Mike wouldn't be rapping much, and I was disappointed at first. But the album's depth really makes up for that. The songs sucked me in to the point that I almost forgot about the absence of rapping verses. They're that good. Sure, there are softer songs. But they're executed perfectly. Not to mention, the few heavy songs on here are, in my opinion, heavier than anything else the band has done. Finally we get to hear true hard rock songs without that overly produced distorted guitar. We also get to hear acoustic songs on this album. I would also like to say that Mike's presence is not missing! He co-produced the album, plays most of the rhythm guitar so that Brad can finally play some lead, contributes 2 great raps, and actually sings one song all on his own (which he does amazingly, I might add... kinda reminds me of a deeper version of Ben Gibbard's voice..) Look, if you only like bands like Evanescence, Breaking Benjamin, etc etc (Don't get me wrong, I love those bands) then this album probably isn't for you. But if you have a diverse music taste or can adapt to change for a good cause (LP surviving the test of time), then pick this up while it's still cheap.

On May 4, 2007, "Minutes to Midnight", Linkin Park's fifth official album was leaked. Minutes To Midnight, revolving around the concept of the notorious doomsday clock, molds a new image to be branded onto the name 'Linkin Park'. Before this release, Linkin Park was known for their catchy drop d guitar chords, undeniably muscular choruses, and articulate raps dealing with the trials and tribulations of everyday life. Linkin Park's very first demo was released in 1997, before the band was even known as Linkin Park. Ten years have passed, and a new formula has been invented and finely executed.

Minutes To Midnight is the definition of what one may call an audible odyssey, taking the listener on a roller coaster of a ride, but somehow managing to stay on track and not lose focus of what the concept of the album is all about. Ten years has passed and through these years, Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda's lyrical landscape has expanded to concepts listeners have never been exposed to. Several songs (No More Sorrow, The Little Things Give You Away, Hands Held High, and the first single 'What I've Done') encompass a political message. Unlike many rock bands today, Linkin Park decides to leave out their own agenda, and leaves one with a myriad of issues to think about and to make their own judgments.

Most noticeably different on this record is the fine addition of ballads and power ballads, a musical corridor Linkin Park has been hesitant to explore in the past. Luckily, Linkin Park does it quite well. Chester Bennington's transitional legacy as one of metal's most admired screamers and one of rock's finest singers is not omitted on this album. Rob Bourdon, already exposed as an extraordinary drummer, took his skills to the next level on this album. Also, with the assistance of Rick Ruben as producer, Dave Farrell aka Phoenix's bass lines are skillfully complex, loud, and clear, adding yet another new dimension to their tunes. The drop d guitar chords have all been put to rest, as beautiful guitar notes make their way onto virtually every track off of this album. And yes, they have in fact implemented guitar solos that transition beautifully into every song.

This will be Linkin Park's first album that has a Parental Advisory slapped on it. Although unnecessary, the Parental Advisory sticker is no indicator whatsoever of a curse-filled album. The F bomb gets dropped a few times on one track and a few other curses made their way onto two other tracks, but other than that, every track is clean as a whistle. Rumor had it that Mike Shinoda would no longer be providing a hip-hop insight on this album. While this is partially true, he sings, yes sings, on one track ("In Between") all by himself, he has a rap track all to himself delving into political issues using vocabulary and issues that many listeners will be left opening history books to. There is one song that instills the old Linkin Park formula ("Bleed It Out"), just as a reminder that they have not eradicated their roots.

All-in-all, this record will by far be Linkin Park's biggest adult audience-targeted album. The band has noticeably matured through their instrumentation, lyrical masterpieces, and thought-provoking sounds and images. A few months ago, asked about what he could say about the new sound on the new album, Linkin Park co-frontman Chester Bennington boldly stated, "The way we've been classified, and how people think they know us, that's all going to die." No lies were told when that statement was made. Without a doubt, when Minutes To Midnight is released on May 15, 2007, they will once again conquer the rock arena, raking in a new slew of fans, the more mature thinkers of today.

I'm going to try not to sit here and repeat everything that everyone else has already said so I'll sum it up for you as quickly as i can...
I am a HUGE linkin park fan and have been since the release of hybrid theory. They developed a new sound through a mixture of chester's raging vocals, intertwined with mikes rap style vocals, finally backed up by one of a kind samples from Joe Hahn. Everything that made them who they are today has changed...EVERYTHING that sold them 40 million records worldwide...they changed. The music is weaker, the rapping is mostly gone (and what they do have of it is VERY corny sounding for the most part), and chester never really tears it up like he use to on previous albums. I for one understand the need to evolve music but no matter who you are, once you've sold 40 mil records wouldn't you recommend sticking to your roots? They will most def gain more support from pop commercial friendly fans but as well lose alot of respect from the current nu-metal/rocker style fans like me.
Well, I've gone on too long but, at best i can commend linkin park for taking a brave step in a new direction. The album does have some poppy hit-worthy material, however it's certainly nothing like most current linkin park fans are probably expecting. I know they put over 14 months into this record but it definitely does not show any appreciation for the fans that got them to where they are today.....All current fans who buy this records will surely get a surprise like taking a sip out of a wine glass and getting whisky...its not terrible, but its definitely not what you expected or wanted.
If it werent for the success of the previous albums and the name they have progressively built up for themselves, i would not have bought this album.

It's their most even, consistent album of the original trilogy that also includes People's Instinctive Travels... and The Low End Theory. But in spite of this, or maybe because of it, it's also their most uninteresting. With so many competent tracks, there's no chance for something to stand out above the pack, like "Scenario" did on Low End Theory or "Can I Kick It" did on People's Instinctive Travels. The celebration is there ("Stir It Up"), the jazz drums kick ("Oh My God"), and the stand-up bass dribbles, keeping perfect pace with Q-Tip's unmistakable mic-touch ("Electric Relaxation"). There's even a Native Tongues armistice/reunion with De La Soul ("Awards Tour"). Although it comes together like a seamless tutorial in jazz hip-hop style, it comes together so damn well that it's hard for any one track to excel, cursing the album with consistent quality. --Todd Levin

I have owned this CD several times in the past 15 years. I have had tapes that have broken and cd's that have scratched and I will continue to purchase and keep this in my repetoire of music because the beats and sentiments are just as valid today as they were in the 90's. You can't go wrong by owning this CD in all of its forms.

This was an album that I went thru multiple packs of batteries to keep it playing in my walkman back in '93-94 time. I can honestly say that every track on this album has its own presence that at some point of time- made me love each and every song. The chemistry with ATCQ was unmatched at that time and can never be overlooked. My top picks from this classic are: "Electric Relaxation", "Oh My God", "8 Million Stories", "God Lives Through", "Keep It Rollin'" and "Lyrics To Go". This is ATCQ's best work to me out of their 5 album releases. Buy it now!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The best "Jazz Hip hop" money can buy........2006-08-05

A tribe Called Quest's 2nd 1992 release Midnight Marauders is what I would consider a very well rounded excursion into the world of Alternative Hip Hop. Some of song's have a serious nature to them such as "8 Million Stories" , in which Q-Tip tells multiple stories about how life as a whole can be hard, just on normal people, and his execution over the slurring Jazzy beat is classic Tip. Another song with more serious subject matter would be "Sucka Nigga" in which The N-Word is discussed, and, the social consequences, and history of the N-Word is also discussed. Q-Tip explains that as much as he hates using the word, he cant help but sometimes say it, because it is so prevalent, and used so often in modern African American culture. He also expresses disgust for the fact that respectable Black men now use the same word with little, or no thought that racist white slave masters used to use in the South. He also disses phony rappers, or "Sucka Niggas" in this song. The thing though about this song, and all of the "Political Thrillers" if you will on this album are all delivered over beautiful Jazzy light hearted instrumentals, which as weird as this may sound, it fits perfectly.
Tan there is more light hearted song's like "Oh My God" , or "Electric Relaxation" which is basically about having sex with fine women. Even though the subject matter is tired, and constantly used, the delivery of this song by Tip, and Phife who exchange short verses is exquisite, and they as always fit the beat perfectly, and mesh together. The lyric's are also nice, and refreshing.
Another cool thing about this album is that there is many weird, and not expected instrumental bridges in the beats that are unexpected, but cool. The first one comes in "Steve Biko (Stir it Up)" in which there is this out of this world sounding highly spacey hook, which sounds like someone is singing at the top of there lungs in a massive room by themselves, and then after that is a 20 second long bridge in which Tip deliver's quickly said lines to no beat, but DJ Scratching, but it is so well mixed and delivered you can't help but love it and nod your head.
Overall this album is a nice refreshing, and creative break from Rap, into the world of Jazzy Hip Hop, and no one has done it as well before or after as Tribe did.

And that's exactly what 'Midnight Marauders' is...an album for eternity! Hundreds of years from now, this album will still resonate through the ears of its listeners. How many groups do you know (especially hip hop) can make back to back to back classic records in a span of three - four years? As a matter of fact, how many records do you know where you can play the whole thing without reachin' for the skip button? The Tribe just had a way of connecting with their fanbase and they continued to uplift their legacy with their greatest offering yet.

Once again, Phife and Tip are a two headed monster tearin' the frame out of some smooth like butter beats that will keep heads bouncin'. What makes A Tribe Called Quest's third record one of my all-time personal favorites are all the little things that real rap listeners notice. Maybe it's the xylaphones sprinkled in on "Award Tour", Ali Shaheed Muhammods masterfully cut sample of Rakim on "We Can Get Down", or Q-Tips descriptive tale of New York nightlife on "Midnight". Whatever the reason, the beats and rhymes effortlessly go hand in hand. Hell, Phife is so confident in his mic skills that he boasts, "I'm Jordan with the mic/ Wanna gamble"?

You may never hear such a cohesive album like 'Midnight Marauders' again. Even the computerized voice drops knowledge, bridging the gaps between songs. The subject matter was diversified to keep people on their toes. Q-Tip educates on the controversial usage of the N-word with quips such as, "You know the word dummy/ other people in the community think its crummy/ But I don't, 'cause the youth we em-brace adversity it goes right with the race/...and bein' that we use it as a term of endearment/". Phife tells his version of freaky tales on the hypnotic "8 Million Stories". Large Professor (the only outsider on the production tip) produced one beat which amazingly fit perfectly with the tribe vibe on "Keep It Rollin'". Who could forget that chant of "yeah, yeah now check the method"? In spite of the superb quality of songwriting and musicality, the unquestionable standout is "Electric Relaxation". The song is a crowning achievement of hip hop in its purest form. Ali hooks up a beat for the hip hop hall of fame as Tip and Phife give a monumental performance.

In conclusion, 'Midnight Marauders' was a masterpiece from the brilliant sequencing to the who' who in hip hop album cover. There were actually three album covers of different rap stars in the background with the black cover being the rarest. You have to wonder if ATCQ was mocking the inside of the cover, standing by the clock because of the timelessness of their music they put out. They even teased their listeners by bringing the computerized voice in, after "The Chase" saying it concludes the program when there was still two incredible songs to follow. Whatever the case, never say the year 'cause this one is for eternity!

I love jazzy hip-hop of the early '90s and if you do too,this is the album you must listen to! all the songs are wonderful but there are some of these which are something of supernatural like the famous (and the most beautiful of the entire cd!) "Award Tour", "Steve Birko(stir it up)" and "Midnight".

Few would claim that Midnight Oil's Peter Garrett is the world's greatest rock vocalist, but he clearly means what he sings. On Diesel and Dust, Garrett and company serve up a collection of solid pop-rock songs that follow the groundwork laid by their early albums. Intrinsic to their sound is a guitars-bass-drums attack spiced occasionally with horns and keyboards and capped with Garrett's throaty vocals. Garrett's lyrics on Deisel and Dust are noteworthy because they are not about love or personal relationships but instead address larger issues. "Beds Are Burning" is a call to return the land expropriated from Australia's aboriginal peoples, while "The Dead Heart" and "Bullroarer" celebrate their rich cultural heritage. Many bands and artists have made some sort of political or social concern apparent in their work, but few have done so as consistently, dedicatedly, and tunefully as Midnight Oil. --Al Massa

My single favorite band of all time - nothing will ever come close. This album is a great introduction to their sound. Full of incredible passion, powerful lyrics, unreal guitar solos, and creativity and originality in every song. The popular Beds are Burning is not even in my top 5 songs on this album (Sell My Soul is #1, and possibly my number 1 song of all time. Dreamworld is pretty special too).

If you fall in love with the album, as I did, you can move onto some of their older stuff - 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1, or Red Sails in the Sunset are similarly incredible, and even more creative.

The Oils are truly a special band, and 6 years after their breakup, I still pop in my mix CD's in the car when my kids aren't around. I'll never understand why they didn't become as popular as, say, U2 or REM - they are all that and more. But I suppose it makes it that much more amazing for the die hard fans that still rave about the Oils to this day.

Diesel and Dust is the perfect merger of rock and social progressivism. Never has a record compelled me to feel as moved as this one, particularly on songs like 'Warakurna', 'Beds are Burning', 'The Dead Heart', or 'Dreamworld'. Never has anyone described with such power and poignancy the plight of the underclass or displaced minorities (in this case the Aboriginal peoples of Australia) in a manner that anyone can relate to. The evocative words ("The western desert lives and breathes at 45 degrees"), the tones used on Rob Hirst's drums, Jim Moginie's and Martin Rotsey's dueling acoustic guitars on the 'Dead Heart', and Peter Garrett's gravel like edge to his singing on tracks like 'Put Down that Weapon', 'Arctic World' or 'Sell My Soul' evoke the imagery of a band that traveled for miles through sandy hot desert lands in pickup trucks and tried to make sense of their experiences upon returning to Sydney. The music intimates the myriad of emotions that the band experienced after meeting and living among simple people, witnessing their stories of hardship and difficulties and the uplifting hope and dignity they found among them.

The record, despite its serious themes, is life affirming, as the defiantly rocking closer "Sometimes" appropriately underscores. Midnight Oil believes in the redemptive power of the human spirit in spite of the injustice and inequities in our world today.

From a musical standpoint, each song is flawlessly crafted and produced. Warne Livesey does an oustanding job of integrating the sounds of the earth and of the band, with the sounds of electronic beats and synthesizers. This is a modern rock record to be sure, in spite of its folksy songs and socially conscious subject matter. This record and "10,9,8..." were Midnight Oil's finest hours. However, this record has a power all its own, as any time we see hardship, suffering and inequality in this world, all we in the west need to do is listen to this record to understand how it tastes, smells and feels to be in that condition. A remarkable record. One for the ages. Get it if you don't have it.

Somewhere in a back corner of my mind, I foster an ambition in my next life of being Peter Garrett's runt sibling (I mean, I'd have to be a runt, wouldn't I? He's bigger than almost anybody I've ever seen on stage doing rock and roll) and the drummer in the band. That's how involved I get with Midnight Oil's music when I hear it. "Diesel And Dust", probably their most media-friendly album - even if, as an American, you don't get some of the political references (and make no mistake; Midnight Oil's music is not love songs or mundane angst; almost without reserve, it is ALL political) is also pretty much their most tuneful. That said, Peter cannot be said to be singing as much as pushing, growling, and wailing the songs out, albeit in a more or less agreeably melodic way. I could be accused of being not very picky, but personally I prefer voices like that, with genuine emotion and pure guts coming from every note. Pretty, trained singing is really fairly lifeless to me. This is the real deal, raw, angry, demanding your attention. I lived in Australia for a while - where I became acquainted with this music - and got to know the politics behind the songs. Down Under, you have a political opinion and you espouse it, sometimes loudly, but never do you hide your candle under a basket - everybody has a personal view and they're not afraid to let you know what it is. Midnight Oil, along with a lot of Aussie bands, uses their music as a forum, as shown when they set up an ad hoc outdoor performance in front of the Exxon headquarters in New York some time ago. (Wish I'd been there.) "Diesel And Dust" is rife with topical references, which still play well, nearly 20 years on; the genocide over generations of the Aboriginal people - did you know they were used in biological experiments, a lot of them quite deadly, until fairly recently? - ecological suicide, pollution, almost any hot-button topic is not beyond the reach of the Oils. And yet the music is so singable and danceable that they're able to get you thinking about the content before you even know you are. It's hard to pick a favourite on the album - the only song I'm not crazy about, and even then I usually don't skip over it ,is "Whoah" because it's a little draggy. "Bullroarer", "The Dead Heart", "Warakurna" and "Sell My Soul" are probably what I would list as favourites, for the sake of argument and discussion; all of them get my blood moving, and the instrumentation does not take a backseat to Peter's insistent yowls and vocal crescendos. Everything that comes from instrument or throat complements the other. This is probably my favourite Midnight Oil album, because it was my introduction to the band, but it is by no means the only one in my collection. I would have to recommend it highly to anyone who wants to expand their musical inventory - and get a little commentary on the side that is perhaps new to them. And next life, Peter. You don't have far to go to find your drummer.

I just noticed that I reviewed this album years ago, as "A music fan" [October 23, 1999]. Since I've listened to this album again in the meantime, I thought I'd try and do a more informative job this time!].

As per my original review, I have to say that it is an open question of whether this album is the Oils best, or "10-1" takes the honour.

Initially, my reaction was that the album had a killer opening three tracks. On relistening to it, it gets better, as some songs grow on you even more.

Here are my favourite tracks:

Beds are burning: pop/rock classic, melodic and clangy at the same time.

Put down that weapon: sort of in the same vein as "10-1"'s "Short memory". The track is a slow pop song that has a brilliant change of pace...a delicious bass riff veers into hyper, clangy rock, and then returns to a slow send off. Terrific stuff.

Dreamworld: one fan told me that the lead singer was a big fan of The Beach Boys. I'd always considered this song as a Beach Boys style song. It's my favourite song from the album, probably. Not the best intro, but once the harmonies and melodies kick in, it's a terrific pop song.

The dead heart: this is a real sing-a-long pop song. You should find the "do do do do do do"'s really catchy.

Sell my soul: this is the song that has REALLY grown on me-a lost Oils classic, a la "Sleep". I love the attention grabbing, funky opening "I am ready. Let's begin". Again, the song has strong melody, as is usual for quality Oils songs.

Sometimes: probably the best of the rest.

In my mind, I always think of this album as in the same vein as The Red Hot Chilli Peppers' "Californication" album. Both albums are immensely strong. This Oils album has really only song which I don't rate that highly, but I can't remember which it is! Californication is like that too, but this Oil's album has stronger songs, and more of them.

Same goes when comparing the Oils "10-1" album with the Chilli Peppers' "Blood sugar sex magik". "10-1" is great because of the four songs on it which form the foundation of the Oils' greatest songs ever. BSSM by the RHCP is also a very good album due to the presence of four songs, but again, I think the Oil's album has the stronger four songs.

5 out of 5 stars they reinvented rock and roll.......2006-06-08

One guy came to me one day and said "listen to that one buddy, it's pretty cool". It was in 1993, and most people had never heard about this band in Europe, including myself.

And it was the great shock. It takes only a few seconds to realize what a masterpiece you have. This kind of thing happens rarely. Such an incredible voice, and this powerful, wild sound, coming from "elsewhere"... They reinvented rock & roll, and they did not joke!
Beds are burning was this kind of song that could appeal to almost everyone, from the hard rock purist to the radio amateur. The melody itself is eternal.
Another fantastic song on the album is "put down that weapon". Musically as impressive as the former one, it impresses also with the passion Garret has to deliver his peaceful message.

There is no weak track on this album. I mean, try any of them alone, and you will have something between "positively inspired" and "awesome".
Every track has got this sense of rough urgency that is the trademark of the group. In the same time the whole is perfectly produced and played.

Just my opinion, in the "ranking game" : Now that I know most of their albums, I would give 5 stars for 3 of them :

2. Diesel & Dust
3. Place without a postcard

This Clint Eastwood vanity-project was one of the biggest box office disappointments of 1997, despite a masterful performance by Kevin Spacey, Eastwood's typically subtle direction and, to these ears anyway, one of the most satisfying collections of songs gathered in service of a film in many a year. It didn't hurt that they were all penned by the late, great Johnny Mercer (a native of Savannah, GA, the film's locale and most crucial, underrated element) and with the exception of Tony Bennett's "I Wanna Be Around" and Sinatra's classic "Summer Wind," were rendered by an all-star team of jazz players (Charlie Haden, Michael Brecker, Joshua Redman, Kevin Eubanks, Christian McBride among them) and an impressive line-up of vocalists including k.d. lang, Paula Cole, Joe Williams, Rosemary Clooney, Cassandra Wilson, Alison Krauss, Diana Krall, and Kevin Mahogany. Eastwood has long been a jazz devotee and, in recent years, eager proselytizer; this album plays like a love letter to one of his most beloved musicians and composers. --Jerry McCulley

If you could buy only one CD this year, I have NO IDEA what it should be. Maybe you should get a second job, you deadbeat. But if you buy two CDs (without having to work in a salt mine, or sell Uncle Bob, piece by piece, for experiments), it should be two soundtracks: Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and L.A. Confidential.

Dark, ethereal, and moody, these albums have an incredible presence, and hold together on their own as great albums, able to stand apart and peer out from beneath the long, great shadows cast by their respective, impressive film counterparts.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is a Johnny Mercer 'songbook' as done by mostly modern artists, including Clint Eastwood, Midnight's director. This, of course, proves that Mr. Eastwood is a great ... director.

Actor Kevin Spacey fairs better, pulling off "That Old Black Magic" without a hitch. Tony Bennett's "I Wanna Be Around" and Rosemary Clooney's "Fools Rush In" = Fabulous. But the stand-outs are Alison Krauss and k.d. lang. Krauss' "This Time the Dream's On Me" is absolutely, ... well, ... dreamy. "Skylark" as sung by Bobby Darin, is one of the great Croon Tunes, but when done here by k.d. lang, Darin gets the spanking he so richly deserves. lang's full, resonant voice fills the song with a warm, rich majesty.

Majesty, my friends.
It's good to be the king. And this album is king.
Worth the price of admission itself.

My suggestion: get both CDs, dim the lights, pour yourself a beverage or four, and listen to these two albums back to back.

Repeat as necessary.

Alison Krauss's version of "This Time the Dreams on Me" unexpectly sets a new standard for female Jazz vocals. Simplely amazing that Ms. Krauss could blow away this old standard, none of the twang of her usual recordings, just amazing.

Otherwise a nice selction of jazz vocals.

Kenny Burrell is a great jazz guitarist, but he really shines on blues. This set is a quartet setting with bass, drums, guitar and tenor, and it's all blues in various forms. Stanley Turrentine really shines on this CD, too. If you love great blues, you will love this CD.

Having first a strong love for blues guitar, it was easy to love this album. This was also my first Kenny CD, and I've bought many since then. Kenny has also become my overall favorite jazz guitarist and that's from serious competition from Wes, Johnny Smith, Joe Pass,Tal Farlow, and other top players. Kenny's approach is just cool, his tone great, and it's also what he doesn't do that makes him great! This album says it all for me.

The pairing of Kenny Burrell and Stanley Turrentine makes for music that is as hot as a fire cracker! Without a doubt, some of Kenny's finest moments are found here. Stanley Turrentine lends his talent to cook up those grooves.

The opener, "Chitlins Con Carne", is one of Kenny's best-known sizzlers. "Soul Lament" is both gently and deeply touching. The title song, "Midnight Blue" has a care-free and easy feel. "Saturday Night Blues" features Stanley Turrentine at his best. "Gee, Baby, Ain't I Good To You" highlights Kenny Burrell at his inspired and awesome finest. There is also a bonus cut, "K Twist" that was not included in the original album.

Kenny Burrell touches music afficienados from all generations. His guitar portrays a subtle exuberance that most musicians envy. Inspired, artistic, and soulful, Kenny Burrell is timeless! Kenny's flawless sound is ageless and color-blind.....his music is world class.

The real beauty of "Midnight Blue" is the cohesiveness of the whole package. I heard "Chitlins Con Carne" on Pure Jazz on the Sirius Satellite Radio and was smitten and had to check out the recording. So few recordings actually achieve what Kenny Burrell does here which is deliver a group of very distinct, individually excellent pieces that are all quite interesting on their own, but stunning in their totality. The guitar work sizzles, but never stings. Wonderful stuff.

Of particular note, "Soul Lament", with Burrell playing
solo guitar. "Midnight Blue", a nice, upbeat number.
Burrell has a very nice chord solo on

Both Burrell and Turrentine really cook on the
up tempo numbers "Saturday Night Blues" and "Kenny's Sound".

Loss and resilience figure heavily in A New Day at Midnight, David Gray's follow-up to his massively popular breakthrough, White Ladder, in 1999. Gray cloaks his painful subject in the kind of impressive songcraft that has marked his work since 1993's A Century Ends. Still, both Ladder and Midnight add a layer of flash to his dependable formula, as dashes of studio trickery and understated electronics (helped along by songwriting partner Clune) give Gray's wistful lyrics and bittersweet, emotive voice a tough-to-resist freshness. Midnight exploits Gray's singing for maximal effect, as songs like the opener, "Dead in the Water," mask sad words with bright reminders of catharsis and faith. At times, Gray could use a little more faith in simplicity. Some songs--"Freedom," for one--could stand just fine with only Gray's voice and a guitar. More often than not, though, Gray's natural, amiable phrasing and ability to create a mood show off his continued growth while staying firmly in the groove that's made him a star. --Matthew Cooke

I purchased this CD as a gift for my wife. She loves it and plays it alot! I noticed my wife has also put it in the CD rotation to play in the background when we are entertaining in our home. Friends have commented favorably.
I had not heard of David Gray prior to her request for the CD, however I am glad she asked. David's vocals and material is easy to listen to. I will have to look at his other albums.

David Gray hit it big with the massive selling album, White Ladder, but its follow up may just be better than the blockbuster. White Ladder have some amazing melodies, but this album has more subtle melodies of its own that are equally beautiful. A New Day At Midnight contains some amazing tracks such as "Dead In The Water", "Real Love", "Knowhere", "Be Mine", and "The Other Side" that make it one of the best albums I have ever heard. Amazing effort.

I am a new fan of David Gray, though I have heard his song for several years, January Rain caught my ear with friends the other week and I quickly purchased 3 CDs. I am not disappointed at all. His unique voice has a hint of the style in the late 70s, and with todays accents. He is an accomplished musician and can sing up a storm, with his mellow raspy voice. His songs are a delight to sit back and picture in your mind being seated next to him or playing along. Just a very down to earth style of music. I will buy more of David Gray.

David Gray gave us "White Lader" and I guess I was waiting for something greater or at least equally good. Instead we got a couple of good songs and the rest is forgettable. He vinidicated himself, at least to me, with his latest "Live In Slow Motion"

David Gray followed up his smash White Ladder with the brilliant New Day at Midnight. Most people anticipated a repeat of the last album, or a bust like some artists have after success, but Gray doesn't let his audience down.

If you loved his work before, you will continue to love this album. The lyrics, the melodies, and the sheer honesty of his emotions are well worth every star you can rate it. White Ladder to me was more personally emotional, but this album is almost as good as what I consider the masterpiece of the last 5 years. That is pretty high praise for this album.

Gray did suprised me with this album. I anticipated a more melancholy style similar to White Ladder, but stretches of the album are more filled with energy than White Ladder, especially the songs Real Love and Be Mine. Amazing building melodies, strong lyrics, and filled with life. Other classics are The Other Side, Dead in The Water, Knowhere, and the odd but catchy Caroline.

The only negatives is that are a few songs which don't stand up as well as the ones listed above. In fact if you combined elements of White Ladder with the best of this album, you would have one of the greatest albums ever. David Gray is an honest musician who makes an effort to share his feeling with you. He may not get the press or the radio play because his music doesn't fit the "formula", but that's why his fans love it, and why anyone who gives it a chance will love it too.
It's worth the spin!

Great CD, I'm not a big jazz lover but the music here is jazz at its best. Reminds me of interlude music to a late-night radio talk show: rich, textured and soft but with just enough tang to make it interesting. I play it all the time late at night while on my computer and like it more and more. Even the wife likes it, so it must be terrific.

Not since moving away from New York, sorely missing CD101.9FM Smooth Jazz radio, have I been pleasantly reminded of their programming. This CD is a sexy compilation of classic jazzy styles, fused together to make one delicious-sounding continuous stream of relaxing yet upbeat sounds.
Patti Austin's throaty voice blends with an eclectic mix of original and haunting sounds - my favorite "groove" is Michael Lington's "Twice in a Lifetime".
Try it while driving to mellow out in traffic. Also perfect listening when preparing a meal or kicking back after your hectic day, great way to relax.

3 out of 5 stars Riddle Excellent, Ronstadt OK.......2007-02-06

Recently pulled out "Lush Life" and "Sentimental Reasons" after several years of not listening to them. Riddle, his arrangements, and the backup orchestras or big bands he conducts here are, of course, magnificent. However, on these recordings Ronstadt is occasionally flat; has that abrasive, throaty, open sound on some of the top notes, (though pretty when she finally breaks into a vibrato); closes off her vowels at the end of phrases; and sometimes stops singing a phrase altogether, which is unsettling. Also, would have liked to have heard Ronstadt deviate from the written melody or rhythm occasionally (something Sinatra or Ella Fitzgerald always managed to do, and which made their interpretations remarkable) as it she would have really nailed these works and given her a place in jazz history of the Great American Songbook.

Have heard much better (and much worse, Rod Stewart, c'mon...), Sinatra, Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee.

Most of her songs are sweet, pretty, but not much above what you'd hear with a good 1930's or 1940's "bird" out front of the big band.

Linda Ronstadt has never made a bad album and this is only more proof. I absolutely love this cd, I also own the three original versions with Nelson Riddle, if fact I think I own all her music. Albums, cassettes, CDs, whatever I have them. I even have the Spanish ones, that I only know every third word, and love them also.

I have a hard time comparing her to any other standard singer, but if you want to hear the difference between her and the others just listen to her Christmas CD and that will explain it all. I am a huge Ella Fitzgerald fan and I have heard all the others, but I place Linda right up there in the top 10, if not the top 5, She can sing any type of music and is one of the very best harmony singers ever, just listen to the Trio album.

My favs (if I had to choose) are FUNNY VALENTINE, "ROUND MIDNIGHT, and of course the other title songs, but I love all the songs. It's not just one thing with Linda, it's the whole package, fans will know what I mean.

This double CD set containing three albums is so spectacular, it will bring tears to your eyes. I love them both so much, that I have told my family to play these CDs (and only these CDs) at my wake and my funeral instead of the typical boring organ-death music. I also told my family if anyone asks- why is this Linda Ronstadt music playing? You tell them- because this is what he is listening to in heaven for all eternity. One last thing, if that was me on the cover with her, she would have never turned her head. Thank you once again Linda.

In 1955, Miles Davis signed on with jazz powerhouse Columbia Records. With alto and tenor saxophonists Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane, drummer Philly Joe Jones, bassist Paul Chambers, and pianist Red Garland, Davis released 'Round About Midnight, which evinces even more clearly what a phenomenal unit Davis was nurturing. Stylistically, Midnight encompasses standards (or soon-to-be standards) such as "Dear Old Stockholm," "Bye-Bye Blackbird," Tadd Dameron's "Tadd's Delight," and Jackie McLean's forward-thinking composition "Little Melonae." Miles and company reprise "Budo" from the historic Birth of the Cool sessions. The standout track is Davis's Harmon-muted reading of Thelonious Monk's ballad, "'Round Midnight, which is still a Miles standard bearer. Three alternate takes round out the session: "Two Bass Hit" and "Sweet Sue" feature adventuresome solos by Coltrane that preview his masterpiece "Giant Steps." Miles Davis first recording with Columbia Records. Miles, trumpet, John Coltrane, tenor saxophone, Philly Joe Jones, drums, Red Garland, piano, and Paul Chambers, bass. If there was a jazz Hall of Fame(why isn't there one?) they all would be in it. From that first note of 'Round About Midnight(a Thelonius Monk composition) this album just blows you away. Add this to your jazz collection and you'll find yourself listening to it over and over. A masterpiece. If DaVinci played jazz, it would sound something like this. I put this one along with Porgy and Bess and Kind of Blue as the essential Miles.

This 'Round about Midnight, is not as good as some of the jazz I've heard. It sounds like Miles just got out of a treatment center and he simply asked John Coltrane to help him up.I think jazz should be free flowing improvised and jazz man, you know. Example, John Coltrane's: Love Supreme.

There are great Miles Davis records (Milestones, E.S.P, Sketches of Spain), and then there are unforgettable ones. Along with Kind of Blue, 'Round About Midnight falls into the "unforgettable" category. Why? First and foremost, the title track, while very good performed by Monk, is found in its definitive version on this record. Miles' brooding muted trumpet sets the melody. Suddenly, the track explodes in a burst of energy and Trane completely steals the spotlight with ione of those solos that make him the best saxophonist in history. After that, it's back to the unforgettable melody. Ah-Leu-Cha picks the pace up severely, some very interesting chord progressions on that one. A fine reading of one of Bird's best. Things slow down again with the ballad All of You, again Miles plays the melody expressively, and Trane solos furiously during his spots. Standard Bye Bye Blackbird comes next, and I can say without a shred of doubt in my mind it's the best song on the album. If you can't tell it's a classic by the opening piano solo, you're beyond all help I can give you (which, to be fair, isn't much). Tadd's Delight is the closest this album comes to a weak song, and even then it has a nice melody. Dear Old Stockholm closes things out, and though normally I'm not a fan of Stan Getz, I love the group's reading of this tune (particularly that harmony part... it will stay in your head forever!) The CD reissue comes with four bonus tracks (Two Bass Hit, Little Melonae, Budo and Sweet Sue Just You), which range from brilliant (Little Melonae) to average (Sweet Sue).
One last thing I'd like to comment on is the album's remaster. Up until a few days ago, I had only heard this album on a scratchy old vinyl. And while normally I don't really notice sound quality (except if it's painfully obvious), the remastering job for 'Round About Midnight is excellent.

Miles' debut album for Columbia Records - and the last LP by his original quintet - is very much in the same vein as the trumpeter's final Prestige sessions, which were in fact recorded almost simultaneously. There's nothing really new here - even the title track had already appeared on a Prestige LP in a nearly identical version - but the Maestro and his sidemen (John Coltrane on tenor sax, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums) play with verve and conviction, stamping their collective personality on the last all-covers program in Davis' catalogue. While subsequent releases such as MILESTONES and KIND OF BLUE are undoubtedly superior on all levels, 'ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT still deserves a place on any Miles Davis fan's shelf - even if the only thing distinguishing it from its predecessors is the record label.
