The Beat Goes On
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Liz Callaway has one of the best voices on Broadway, with a clear-as-a-bell tone, seemingly effortless soprano range, and terrific warmth. After spending five years on Broadway as Grizabella in Cats and further occupying herself with animated voiceover work, Callaway has released The Beat Goes On, her first solo album since 1995's outstanding The Story Goes On, and it was worth the wait. Naturally, any celebration of the frenetic '60s needs a wide scope, and included here are infectious pop ("Wedding Bell Blues"), Broadway musicals (Hair's "Frank Mills," Promises, Promises' "Half as Big as Life"), the Beatles ("When I'm 64"), social protest ("Where Have All the Flowers Gone"), and movie music ("Moon River"), all masterfully arranged by music director Alex Rybeck. Callaway has never sounded better--her "Up, Up and Away" soars, and "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is totally irresistible. She confesses that recording Petula Clark's "Downtown" has been a lifelong fantasy; it comes true in this dream of an album. --David Horiuchi

The Isleys Coasting.......2007-07-02
INSIDE YOU (1981) and THE REAL DEAL (1982) are the featured albums on this third two-on-one Isley release from BGO Records. Both of these albums broke the group's nine gold and/or platinum album streak.
The previous album GRAND SLAM (also 1981) took longer than the previous eight albums to reach "gold" status. So on INSIDE YOU, the Isleys tried to reinvent themselves by incorporating lush string arrangements into their clavinet/guitar solo funk formula. For the most part, it works, especially on the title tune, the Doobie-ish "Baby Hold On", the lush Stylistics-like ballad "Don't Hold Back Your Love", and "Love Zone" in which Ernie's guitar soars above a comfy bed of strings. However, the pop leanings fall flat on "First Love", the soggy "Welcome To My Heart", and "Love Merry Go Round", a good idea that somehow fails to catch fire. INSIDE YOU stalled at #45 on the Billboard pop album chart, the Isleys first non-top 40 album since 1971's GIVIN' IT BACK.
After that pop/funk experiment failed, the Isleys brought the funk back to the forefront in 1982's THE REAL DEAL. The title track and "Are You With Me?" incorporate some Gap Band influences in the mix, while those darn strings rear their ugly head in the poppy "It's Alright With Me". "All In My Lover's Eyes" is well-sung but features lazy lyrics, while Ernie's guitar saves the funky "Stone Cold Lover" and the bluesy closer "Under The Influence". This album crawled to #87 on the Billboard Pop Charts.
After the failure of these albums, the Isleys came back with 1983's platinum BETWEEN THE SHEETS. These albums aren't the best representation of the Isley catalog, but they have their moments.
First Love!.......2007-06-29
I can't believe this! Wow! I have been waiting on both of these albums to be released since 1993! I own both albums on vinyl and they're my 2 favorite Isley albums. Now these two albums never have been on cd domestically! So this is a first time. I've seen a copy of the Real Deal on eBay which looked like an import. But don't no if it was legit. Now I have been jamming these two albums since 1993. 1 song from each album has been released on cd. So this is going to be good. I can't wait because I already pre-ordered it. I own imported cd of Grand Slam, Go all the Way, Masterpiece, Showdown, Harvest for the World and Live it Up! A couple is now sold domestically but I am one of their biggest fans. Now these albums are two of their lowest selling albums but I think it was just the advertisement and the time it was released that didn't allow these albums to soar. But these are two underrated albums. I know all kinds of history on these guys. So place your order and get ready to jam! This is the Real Deal!

top 10.......2007-07-01
Come on.........everyone knows Bridge of Sighs is in the top ten and it includes the first album. Can't go wrong.
Bridge of sighs.......2007-02-12
I loved "bridge of sighs" the first time I heard it. I found many of the other songs enjoyable as well. There are a few songs on this (double) album that are below par for Robin Trower, but it is still a good addition to anyones collection.
Trower at his peak.......2007-01-07
Bridge of Sighs and Twice Removed From Yesterday represent Robin Trower at his peak. Combining with Reg Isidore on drums and the vocals of James Dewar, Trower creates an atmosphere filled with dreamy guitar riffs, while still allowing the vocal talents of Dewar to shine.
The Hendrix influence is obvious, yet this is not a Jimi clone. Trower remains one of the most under-rated guitarists of his generation.
Two for One.......2006-11-04
Classic Trower, including his most well known work Bridge of Sighs. Can't go wrong for the price.
Classic Album.......2006-09-27
Classic album is a term often used in the music industry, but just what defines a classic album? Is it reaching certain sales figures? Is it decided by respected music critics or is it just plain old public opinion. If it is the latter, then in the humble opinion of this member of the public Bridge of Sighs is a classic album, certainly as far as the blues/rock genre is concerned. It contains only eight songs, which was about par for the course back in the early seventies, but each one is a gem and where I'm tempted to skip tracks on some CDs, I have to listen to all the tracks on this one.
It opens with the energetic Day of the Eagle and there's more energy with The Fool and Me and Little Bit of Sympathy. Balance this with the beautiful slow ballads In This Place and About To Begin, add the catchy Lady Love, the rumbling Too Rolling Stoned and the haunting title track and you have all the necessary ingredients for a classic album.
This package also includes the Robin Trower bands debut album Twice Removed From Yesterday. This contains a couple of weaker tracks, notably Ballerina, but also contains a couple of classics, in I Can't Wait Much Longer and Daydream, a personal favourite.
What more can I say! Well, after sampling the virtuoso guitar playing of one of Britain finest, have another listen, to someone who had one of the best voices in music, the late great James Dewar. You'll love it!

Buy this for Spindrifter.......2006-01-11
This anthology, rather than Sons of Mercury, is the one to purchase if you're new to QMS. I won't dispute with some reviewers who prefer the live energy of Happy Trails for the original albums, but Anthology delivers all of the top songs for QMS including Spindrifter, a solo piano piece that showed why both the Who and the Stones wanted his talents. This version of Mona is also better than the one on Sons of Mercury, which is cut short for some awful reason.
QMS was quirky, talented, and a unique but accessible sound in an era of trippy San Francisco bands. This anthology gives you the absolute best of their studio music.
Quicksilver Rocks.......2005-09-19
I saw these guys in Denver back in the 70's, in a little bar, with Nicky Hopkins playing piano...nothing more needs to be said!

and is producing new

Old Stuff.......2002-10-30
When this lp first came out I wore out the grooves and bought it again but that was a different time in our American lives. It's about sex, drugs and rock-and-roll. It's too slow for my more-modern taste. Some of the tunes still stand; but you can find those tunes at a modest price. This cd should be retired.
Excellent Collection of Some Great Songs.......2002-07-14
I had this on vinyl back when it was released as a double-album in the 1970s, and was glad to see it made available on CD.
Quicksilver Messenger Service, as you may or may not know, was one of the many bands that originated in and around the San Francisco area in the middle to late 1960s. Though not as well known nor as successful as some of the others would go on to be (Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, The Steve Miller Band), Quicksilver established itself as a band with first-rate musicianship, even though the band's lineup would regularly change. (Original guitarist John Cippolina would later go on to establish Copperhead; Gary Duncan was the other guitarist and occasional vocalist; bassist/vocalist David Freiberg would end up playing in the Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship band; pianist Nicky Hopkins would come for a while but then leave, to be replaced by Mark Naftalin from the Butterfield Blues Band; vocalist Dino Valenti, although technically slated to be part of the band from the beginning, didn't actually join the group until it had been around for four or five years due to his incarceration on drug possession and his vocals are reminiscent of Marty Balin from Jefferson Starship.)
Despite the changing lineups, the band recorded a number of outstanding songs as collected on this CD. The CD opens up with their cover of Hamilton Camp's "Pride of Man", followed up by "Dino's Song" (written by the aforementioned Dino Valenti, who was by the time this was recorded spending time in jail), and then the masterful 12-minute "The Fool". Cippolina's trembling electric guitar work stands out on these, particularly the mostly instrumental "The Fool" (a few verses are sung in its later minutes).
The next song "Bears" is a light-hearted, short song; a cover of "Mona" (a bluesy, but somewhat forgettable song, previously recorded by Bo Diddley) and "Edward the Mad Shirt Grinder" (an instrumental piece written by Nicky Hopkins) follow it. "Three or Four Feet from Home," written by Cippolina, sounds like something The Grateful Dead might have done. Following it are a couple of songs for which Dino Valenti finally joined the group and sang -- "Fresh Air" (which has two instrumental breaks, one featuring guitar work and the other piano) and "Just for Love". Both songs marked somewhat of a turning point, as the band turned away from longer, less commercial songs to more radio-friendly fare. "Spindrifter," another Nicky Hopkins piece, is an instrumental piano-laden song with an exquisite melody. "Local Color" is an instrumental, slide-guitar, bluesy piece written by Cippolina; it is the last song on this collection on which he plays. "What About Me" introduced Mark Naftalin on piano to the band (replacing Nicky Hopkins) and while it is a pretty much standard protest type of song from 1970, the following Dino Valenti-penned "Don't Cry My Lady Love" is a terrific romantic pop ballad with outstanding piano work from Mr. Naftalin. "Hope," a pretty good electric lead guitar-driven piece, the acoustic guitar and piano "Fire Brothers," and "I Found Love" close out the CD. For "Fire Brothers" and "I Found Love," Greg Duncan, who at this time was the only original member from the band still around, provides the vocals.
Overall the CD earns 5 stars on the strength of some outstanding arrangements and musicianship, even though a few songs are rather forgettable themselves. This CD is an excellent introduction to and overview of Quicksilver in its most productive and creative phase (1967 - 1971); although the band would continue (again with lineup changes) for some additional years, none of the later output holds up to what is on this CD. If you like the San Francisco style of music, with its extended musical interplays and occasional psychedelic excursions, this CD won't disappoint.

for earth below/ live.......2006-11-10
robin trower for earth below. its a good, if not above average robin trower recording. a very even effort building upon the foundation laid on twice removed from yesterday and adding new guitar textures to a good blues rock sound all in all a very good record!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! robin trower live! this is the one that put robin in heavy rotation on the a.o.r. f.m. radio. a great quick shot of robins live set up until the mid 70's. i wish they could find complete concerts from this era of robins career because he was on fire during this time.
Two Great Trower Albums At One Low Price.......2006-08-01
FOR EARTH BELOW/LIVE is a single-disc compilation of two great Robin Trower albums from the 70s. LIVE is one of the best live albums ever released, and FOR EARTH BELOW was a great follow-up to the exceptional BRIDGE OF SIGHS. Any serious fan of blues-based rock & roll should own this one.
Two Of Trower's Best.......2006-07-10
Any rock fan knows that "Bridge Of Sighs" is one of the best rock albums of all time.
But if you love "Bridge" you must have these 2 albums. "Bridge" is an A+ but these are both A's. "For Earth Below" is an incredible follow up to "Bridge". It keeps the same feel but the song writing is even tighter. "Trower Live" is one of the best live rock records ever made. The feedback ferocity and finesse on "Daydream" is worth the price alone. If you like Trower, these are must have LP's.
Great Artist, Poor CD Quality.......2006-02-25
Robin Trower deserves 10 stars. Problem is, this CD sounds like it was recorded to cassette first and then burned on a CD later. Very "muffled" sound and needs to be turned up higher to get the same output as other CDs in my collection.
Guitar never sounded better.......2006-02-10
The critical album on this release is "Live." Anyone curious to hear how good an electric guitar can possibly sound should purchase this CD. Trower deals in both overdriven and clean sounds with his Fender Strat, and his use of effects like the wah-wah pedal and the Uni-Vibe, while sometimes drawing unfair and shallow comparisons to Hendrix, is unparallelled in grace and style.
When Trower unleashes a sustained feedback note (i.e. near the end of "Daydream"), I want it to last thirty minutes. But he's also capable of dramatic bursts and flurries of notes, punctuated by bends and whammy bar workouts ... as Robert Fripp himself noted, Robin Trower has mastered the "bends and wobbles."
During the last solo of "Lady Love," Trower plays a pinch harmonic that is THE sweetest single note I ever heard, anywhere.
Jimmy Dewar lays down a great bass groove throughout - and his voice is quite powerful. He has a rich, soulful vibrato that compliments the music nicely.
Bill Lordan is a good, jazzy drummer, although occasionally his cymbals do clutter the sound, especially on the live album. But let's face it, the reason we are all listening to this is to hear what Robin is gonna play next :)
I could write pages about how great this CD is - do not wait a minute longer. Order it!

BUYERS NOTE!!!!!!!!.......2007-04-27
I am writing this trying to correct a mistake in the Amazon listing for this CD.
Please note that for reasons unclear some of the information on this page, including several of the user reviews, refer to the BGO remastered 2for1 CD that contains the Trower albums LONG MISTY DAYS and IN CITY DREAMS, yet the item for sale on this page is NOT THAT!!!!
The item for sale here is the original Trower release of LONG MISTY DAYS on CD from Chrysalis records.
The UPC code for the Chrysalis CD is 094632110725 and that is what this page is properly indexed as, and that is what the sellers here (including myself) are offering.
Any reference to the 2for1 BGO release, or anything on the label "Capital" instead of Chrysalis is a mistake on this page. I am trying to get Amazon to fix this, but unfortunately I have no control over that!
I hope this helps clear up any confusion and prevents any buyer disappointment if they buy this but expect to get the BGO version.
Jimmy Page Who? Give Me Trower Anyday!.......2007-02-18
I see and read these silly guitarist and rock documentaries and they all go on about Jimmy Page this and Jimi Hendrix that - yawn. It's as if there is an industry of Jimmies. What why isn't Robin Trower ever mentioned? He's just as good a player as those guys are. I used to sit in my bedroom listening to Trower's "Long Misty Days" and wonder why Page and Clapton were the guitar gods, when Trower and a host of others weren't the exalted ones? If only "Days" and "Bridge Of Sighs" were released on one disc. I'm afraid a law would have to be passed demanding any kid who was thinking of playing guitar buy it, learn it and live it.
1/2 of a good disc.......2007-01-06
I don't know why they insist on packaging 2 albums on 1 disc but it drives me crazy. Anyway, Long Misty Days is a nice effort by Robin. The problem is that he is so tame in the studio that you really have to see him live to appreciate all he can do. Still, it's a fun album that makes for some good party music.
In City Dreams is horrible. It was the beginning of the end for Robin being a popular artist. Ironically, that's what he was trying to do, be more "mainstream". But writing lame pop songs with annoying electronic gimmicks did nothing but alienate his fan base.Because of this I have to take a star away from the overall rating.
rt.......2006-11-06
not much to say that has not been said before, all it take's is one show.robin own's the ax.
Long Misty days.......2006-11-04
This combination of Long Misty Days-InCity Dreams is a must for any Robin Trower fan, Caledonia is a great song, the title songs are very good as well.

Amazon.com essential recording
Sonny Bono was a record-biz vet by the time he hooked up with a teenaged female singer named Cher. After a 1963 flop under the name Caesar and Cleo, the pair clicked with "I Got You Babe," a leap onto the folk-rock bandwagon that made them America's favorite pseudohippies for a brief moment. Cher's less-than-dulcet tones never sounded better than when placed next to Sonny's nasal croak. As for Sonny himself, his solo protest work--including "Laugh at Me," later covered by Mott the Hoople--is excerpted here. There are no words. --Rickey Wright

I listened to this CD (again) in its entirety last night. This is an excellent compilation of Sonny & Cher's best songs from their ATCO years (1965-1967). The packaging is top-notch, and the essay by Ken Barnes is informative and entertaining.
For a die-hard fan like me, this is a five-star set. But for the sake of objectivity, I'm willing to look beyond my die-hardedness and to put myself in the shoes of the casual listener. There are 21 songs in this collection, 14 of which were chart hits. (Think about it: 14 charted songs in 3 years!!!) The collection would work far-more successfully for the casual listener if only the chart hits were included. (So, if you're not a die-hard fan, consider this a four-star set.)
For the die-hards, though, this is an excellent historical overview of their career. There are three Sonny solo songs: the top 10 hit "Laugh At Me," and the follow-up "The Revolution Kind" and his ultimate camp classic "My Best Friend's Girl Is Out of Sight." There's a rare B-side, "Hello," from 1965, which is throw-away filler to be sure, but a Sonny & Cher throw-away!! And also a brief public service announcement with Sonny & Cher encouraging kids to "stay cool, go back to school."
My hair stands on end whenever I read that Sonny's talent was "limited." Who's isn't? Think of what this man accomplished, however. He had a knack for writing commercial hits that had addictive hooks and lyrics. Some of his lesser-known songs aren't as "good" as his hits, but so what? Out of the 14 chart hits Sonny & Cher amassed that are on this collection, he wrote (or co-wrote) 12 of them. That ain't bad, is it? (And that is not counting the hits that came about in the second phase of their career in the early '70s, either.)
I've written in another review that their voices blended together beautifully, especially in this inital phase of their career. I'm always taken aback by their duets. "The Beat Goes On: The Best of Sonny & Cher" is expertly-compiled collection of their best work together.
Help .......2007-03-11
Help! I'm trapped inside a Sonny & Cher review and I don't know how I got here and I think I like it. A lot of time has gone by, kids, and there's not much left of the world that spawned this unholy coupling, but it is a suitable window into a certain side of Sixties culture that was so magnificently decayed and bankrupt, with music that is a precursor for, yes, the amazingly bad songs of the film "Ishtar" that . . . well, ok, I've said enough. You either know at this point to go forth or run, but I can say no more.
About the recording company.......2006-02-04
If you had Sonny & Cher records during their heyday like I did, you might remember that they recorded for the Atco label, a division of Atlantic Records.
Whenever I want to buy a CD of music from many years ago, I try to make sure that I don't get remakes (recordings that aren't the exact ones that we heard on the radio way back when). Most artists re-record their songs for cheesy remake labels and, trust me, you'll be disappointed with them.
I read all the owner reviews at Amazon and, many times, a CD buyer will let you know that the CD you're considering buying has newer recordings or, just as bad, live concert recordings of songs. For instance, Joan Baez's big hit song "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" was on the Vanguard label when it was a hit song. But she defected to A&M Records soon after and A&M has a greatest hits package that includes songs from her Vanguard days--but they're live concert recordings. You have to look for the Vanguard label so you get the recording that you remember from the radio--they still retain the rights to the songs she recorded for them.
Also, you would think you could trust Capitol Records every bit as much as A&M. But I was looking at Andrews Sisters' CDs recently and noticed that 2 different labels offer their greatest hits--MCA and Capitol. Fortunately, an Amazon reviewer said that Capitol's compilation contains newer recordings that the Andrews Sisters recorded in the 50's. I bought MCA's CD and was not disappointed.
So, you can see that this Sonny & Cher CD is on the label "Elektra/WEA". Other Web sites list this same CD as "Rhino/WEA". One Web site just says "Rhino".
I just received this CD and the label is REALLY "Atco", the label Sonny & Cher recorded all their hits for in the 60's. Therefore, these songs are the actual recordings you remember from the 60's.
By the way, anytime you see the Rhino label for a CD, you can buy it without any worry of remakes. I own many CDs from Rhino and I have never been stuck with a remade song. They license the legitimate recordings from the company that owns the rights to the songs.
Why 4 stars instead of 5? Not anyone's fault, really, but some songs on Sonny & Cher's CD don't sound too good. This is surely due to the aging of the master tapes. After all, they've been around 40 or more years!
THE SAGA CONTINUES.......2005-07-15
Having lived through the turbulent '60's, I occasionally turn to that era during times of drunkeness. This CD, however, holds a dear place in my heart unlike any other -- and a special story. In 1968, my old town of Hermann's Hermitage changed its name, after the unlikely arrival of Sonny and Cher. As the story goes, Sonny lost his bearings trying to get to a Chicago concert, was hoplessly lost on Interstate 65, and ended up on our Main Street. Needless to say, the entire town turned out and welcomed them. After indulging themselves on baked ham and scalloped potato dinners, the celebrities won everybody's heart with their gracious manners and creepy good looks. I was just a lad at the time, but I still remember the tearful farewells, and standing in the rain on the corner of Spring and Apple to wave at their magenta minibus as it puttered away to the Big Time. It was a magical night. Shortly afterwards, the city council changed the name of our town to "Sonny and Cherville", and voted to slap a one percent sales tax on beer and soft drinks -- which paid for a concrete statue of the singing duo in Monkee Park. Years later, hard times befell us during the Arab oil embargo of 1974. In order to save money on ink and letterhead space, the town had to relinquish the words "Sonny and" from its charter. We are now, simply, "Cherville". And sadly, the years have not been kind to the statue: Cher exploded one summer during a freak lightning storm, and vandals using Bondo elevated Sonny's feet six inches off the pedestal. He now looks like a punch-drunk Tom Selleck. Oh well.
This is a great CD.
The important sixties hits.......2005-06-02
This collection contains all of Sonny's important British and American hits (with and without Cher) from 1964 to 1967, although some minor hits are missing. The classic hits here are I got you babe (number one in Britain and America), Laugh at me (a Sonny solo), Just you, Baby don't go, What now my love, Little man (number one in several European countries) and The beat goes on. There are many other wonderful songs including Sing c'est la vie, which was number one in Belgium but didn't chart at all (maybe wasn't released) in Britain or America.
Cher's solo hits from the sixties are omitted from this collection - you must buy either a separate Cher collection, or a more comprehensive Sonny and Cher collection to obtain those. For a comprehensive collection of the music of Sonny and Cher, buy the European double CD Singles plus, which contains all of Sonny and Cher's hits, separately and together, up to 1974. It comes at a price but if you're only interested in the early part of Cher's career, you won't need a separate Cher compilation.
If you are looking primarily for Sonny and Cher's duets and aren't bothered about the absence of Cher's solo hits, this is a great single CD.

My Favorite Mountain Album.......2007-01-12
Mountain was always a band that sounded better live than in the studio. Leslie West and the band gave a truly inspired performance on this record. I have the vinyl album as well as the cd because its a favorite of mine. Here you will find the absolute best recorded renditions of Nantucket Sleighride and Long Red. Ray Knight's keyboard playing on Sleighride is a beautifully atmospheric addition to Leslie West's soaring solos. Long Red is West's tour de force as he creatively improvises on a theme. His phrasing is always so effective, he can say more with three or four notes than many guitarists can with a dozen. If you only own one Mountain album, this is the one I'd recommend.
youth revisited.......2006-07-09
I pulled my old lp copy of this out the other night (remember those? kids actually have no clue about them today) and was as blown away as I was 30 years ago. Why doesn't music sound like that anymore? Today's performers - some of them are artists - don't get involved with the music. My theory lately is that the perception has switched from the strength being given to the instrumentation to vocal virtuosity, which to me sounds like just so much warbling. I am far more interested in a good story and in competent musicianship than in someone demonstrating how much they know about range. I hope the mood shifts again back to real artistry, but until then I have these old gems that so transported me in my salad days. This particular rendition of "Nantucket Sleighride" is the best, hands down, and I've listened closely to all the recorded versions. It takes up all of one side of the original disc but doesn't lag anywhere. The balance of the album is good also, a real rockin effort. Step back into the 70s and enjoy real music from good times.

"Timeless Mountain".......2005-11-06
Yes this CD only has four songs on it but it is Timeless Mountain for sure. Having been a musician and knowing Felix Pappalardi personally Mountain was a big inspiration to me as much as The Beatles were to many. The talent in this band is Mountainous.
I had been looking for this album on CD for years and when I saw it here at Amazon I didn't think twice I purchased it immediately. Savoring the tracks from the smooth melodic Long Red to the timeless Rock mastepiece Nantucket Sleighride with a rarely heard nicely done keyboard solo from Steve Knight.
Mountain's natural thick sound of Leslie West's rip roaring guitar chords and licks, Felix Pappalardi's bumble bee sounding bass, Steve knight's melodic keyboards and Corky Laing's thunder can all be heard live. This CD is truly Timeless Mountain.
This is the Road to take.......2005-08-19
I Loved Mountain and was very fortunate to see them many times.
This is the way I remember them in concert.
When you listen to this album you will be swept away by the atmosphere and by the passion these guys generated.
This is by far THE definitive version of Nantucket Sleighride.
Mountain at its best.
Mountain.......2005-04-09
This is one of the best "Live" recordings of all time for rock and roll. Lelsie West is still one of the greatest guitar players ever. Felix's sound on bass is very unique and Cory Laings drums are top notch. Poor Steve Knight on keyboards, no respect! This is a must for Mountain fans! Even if you are not a huge fan, this is one to have in your collection. Pure rock and roll at its finest!

Ecstatic that this is available on CD!.......2007-06-14
I have worn my old LP to a hissy nub, so I'm ecstatic that both the 2nd and 3rd Seatrain albums are available on CD. I can't express how much I loved the 2nd album, have played it at least once a week since 1971.
Still Great -.......2007-06-11
Jerseytomato has gotten it right -- this is also my favorite all-time album. Despite the weaknesses in their other releases, everything comes together here. This is a band with many disparate influences, from bluegrass to rock to folk to blues, that blend together perfectly here. Oddly, the most well-known song on the album, "13 Questions" is probably the weakest song. The lyrics to "Broken Morning" and "Out Where the Hills" are as good as anything written in rock music history.
a few good songs.......2007-04-18
I bought this because I had to have Song of Job and it wasn't available on iTunes or any other CD. There are three or four songs on here I like: Song of Job, 13 Questions, Waiting for Elijah, and maybe one other that is at least listenable. I didn't even bother to copy the rest of it to my iPod. Just not my taste in music - but your mileage may vary, especially if you are a diehard Seatrain fan, which I'm not.
Maybe there's a reason they weren't big?.......2007-03-19
Seriously, I bought this CD for only two tracks which I enjoyed in college (Story of Job & 13 Questions), but overall, most all of these tunes sound very dated and too similar to one another. The audio quality is mediocre (at least compared to many digitally remastered albums I have) and for this genre, The Band, did it better. Too much fiddle mixed up front. If you were a huge fan of Seatrain, you'll like two albums being squeezed onto one disk (makes sense as they never did any long jams on vinyl).
Don't say you weren't warned.......2007-01-13
Old enough to know has it right. This is not the original Seatrain from 1971 that we know and love. It is a re-recording that is no good, a poor reflection of the original, a major disappointment and a waste of time and money. If you can find the original, get it, otherwise don't bother.

Nearly 40 years later..................2007-06-21
I have been transferred back in time and loving every single minute of it! I have searched for this album (Rewind/Realization) for years and when I stumbled upon it after nearly giving up on my search, I was ecstatic!! Johnny Rivers has always been one of my favorite artists and Jimmy Webb wrote songs that seemed to call me by name. I can remember the first time I split the cellophane on Rewind and put that vinyl on my turntable. What a heavenly experience it was. I had the same feeling when I split the cellophane on this CD and popped in my disc drive. So many expectations from my past have diminished with time but this experience, I can happily report is not one of them. Although I had to put on my reading glasses to read the fine print this time; my heart was wrapped around the sounds coming out of my compact speakers. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you, for bringing these songs back into my life! I will sit here today and type my day away and listen to Sidewalk Song/27 Street, It'll Never Happen Again, Tunesmith with a smile on my face. I feel like I am 18 again in my heart, I will just avoid the mirror today. Johnny, I still love you, wherever you may be. (P.S. I could never drive down Rosecrans Blvd without thinking about you.)
Rewind Realization.......2007-01-16
I was looking forward to all these great songs of Johnny Rivers on one CD! I was amazed and dissapointed at the poor quality. I brought out the Johnny Rivers Anothology CD's I purchased a few years ago to compare . There is no comparison in the quality of the same songs. It is a shame this studio is doing such a disservice to such a great artist. Amazon needs to re-consider using them as a vendor.
Incredible classic.......2007-01-10
All it took was the lead in to Hey Joe, the first song on the Realization portion of the CD, and I was off the planet. Couldn't ask for a more fabulous flashback to the late 60's. Johnny Rivers at his best and never got enough accolades for this amazing album. This CD is more than a collectable. The Realization album was a must in 68/69, and still is. Only wish the remastering was a bit more expansive.
Rivers run dry.......2006-12-27
Don't buy it. If you can get Carpet Man on another collection, do so. He's better off not trying to be hip because he is not. I purchased this for historical purposes, but if you ever wonder about pop idols trying to be hip, Tommy Roe did a little better with Winter's Day.

Baby Boomers Memories.......2007-05-13
"Darkness Darkness" is one of the all time great songs, and has been playing in my head for 30 years. So when I went looking for it on Amazon and found this RE-Mastered version of the Youngbloods three albums, I was ecstatic. Listen to the samples and you will be hooked.
I rated it a 4 star because obviously you don't get the full benefit of the old stereo mixing, but they did a good job on the remix. I would have given it a 5-star for content and nostalgia and talent alone. Re-mixes are so much better than just Album-to-CD recordings, but still can't quite get the essence and nuances. Priced under $25.00, I'd say you need this for your Memory Lane.
Terrific music...fantastic sound........2007-04-15
First off let me say that the sound quality of this reissue is FANTASTIC. It sounds so much better then my old vinyl and any earlier CD reissue. I gave this 5 stars, but only The Youngbloods first album deserves it. That debut still stands the test of time. The playing and material is as good, if not better, then everything else from the era ('66-'67). The mix of rock, blues and folk music on that debut has the sound of an exciting, stage-honed set. Their second album, Earth Music, would rate 3 stars. Only half of Earth Music sounds as good as their 1st (those tunes sound like they were recorded at the same sessions as the first). The other half of Earth Music sounds like demos and outtakes. Elephant Mountain would only get 2 stars...even though my all-time favorite Youngbloods song comes from that album...the incredible, Darkness, Darkness. There are three outstanding songs on Elephant Mountain....Darkness, Darkness, Beautiful and Ride The Wind...those three are up there with the best The Youngbloods ever recorded. Unfortunitly, the rest of that album has the feel and sound of a band that lost its focus. OK, that being said, I still think this set is a "must-have" for collectors of late 60's and early 70's American music. When The Youngbloods nailed it...they nailed it right to the wall.
Finally, Out with the Vinyl!.......2007-03-18
To those who knew their LPs when they were first released, and knew then that they were better than many of their contemporaries in so-called "folk-rock" -- including the overrated, bloated, boring "does this song ever end!?" "Grateful Dead" -- this is exactly that for which you've been waiting: their first three LPs, complete.
'Nuff said.
And the mastering is excellent.
Though I'll miss their full-sized covers, out goes the worn out vinyl!
Did nothing for me.......2007-03-12
If the Greatful Dead sang a little better, it might sound like these guys, but the Grateful Dead had better songs. I can't say these guys suck, its just not my bag. This could be a treasure to some. Mostly forgettable blues and country. Was pleasantly surprised by "Reason to Believe" (made famous by Rod Stewart). Charlie Daniels produced the 3rd album, which I think I like best from the standpoint of at least trying to break new ground. These guys didn't break any ground, even their definative Lets Get Together is a cover in the vein of Hey Joe (everybody took a crack at it). They probably benefited from the misfires of others before they nailed their great version of this song...but you can probably find it on the Forest Gump Soundtrack and a 100 other places, so don't buy 3 albums just to get it.
