Editorial Reviews

Patricia Barber has made enough breakout albums to be brought up on charges. Her career, not to mention her music, has been like a giant rainbow arcing eternally upward with bursts of bright giddy colors and dark moody tones. But like her last album, Nightclub, and before that Companion and Modern Cool, this is the one that will bring her a bigger audience. The difference here is that this is the singer-pianist's first album of all original songs. With Dave Douglas dancing his trumpet around her witty and literate tales, these 10 scholarly vignettes are reminiscent of the way the great Cole Porter educated his listeners while thoroughly twisting the English language in an irresistibly entertaining way. "I Could Eat Your Words" is about philosophy, cooking, and falling in love with your college professor. In it she somehow can "suck the salt from erudition, drink remorse like a cabernet, sweeten with equivocation" and still swing. Many singers would still be stuck on "erudition" while Barber--all sly, darkly slick, and witty--continues to compose from a high artistic perch. Mentioning David Hockney, Edward Hopper, and Goya in the text of "If I Were Blue," and Baudelaire in "You've Gotta Go Home," ain't no easy trick. --Mark Ruffin

From a pure-pleasure standpoint, the first Beethoven's Wig was nothing to flip over, and the second disc in the series follows suit. However, that is not to say that this is not a valuable and possibly ingenious record. Those unfamiliar with the premise will quickly get the picture: Producer/writer/lead singer/chief clever guy Richard Perlmutter gathers a bundle of important classical works (Paganini's "Violin Concerto #2," Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz") and makes up silly, catchy lyrics to lay over them, informing the listener about the piece or its composer. Standing out for their offbeat brilliance this time are "Dvorak the Czechoslovak" ("Humoresque #7," Dvorak) and "Wow What a Wedding Cake" (Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mendelssohn). Few stabs at mixing education with entertainment succeed so well. As a bonus, the second half of the CD repeats the symphonies straight up, presenting a neat opportunity to quiz kids 5-12 on what and who they've just heard. --Tammy La Gorce
Customer Reviews:
Greatest baby gift ever.......2007-03-15
Both of my grandchildren (and their parents and grandparents) are hooked on this CD and all of the silliness and beauty it brings into our lives. We sing to it, dance to it, and find ourselves thinking about it at odd times. Who can't love singing Verdi VERY LOUD? I've now started giving this as a simple baby gift, especially to those with older siblings. They are already equipped with clothing and nursery gear, and Beethoven's Wig invites the whole family to gather round...even if it is just on short car rides.
Great for the whole family.......2007-01-04
My husband, 18 month old daughter and I all love this CD. It's a staple in the car. One caveat- these lyrics will get stuck in your head and I now find myself singing the "words" to these songs when I hear them in a store or commercial! I'm hoping this means my daughter will recognize these songs as she gets older.
More Great Fun.......2006-03-13
Like the first volume, this CD encourages young children to enjoy classical music. The silly lyrics sometimes impart factual information on the composer or the piece. There are 11 sing-along symphonies and then the 11 symphonies are replayed without the lyrics--total of 22 tracks. Booklet with lyrics and trivia is included. All our children (aged 2-12) enjoy this CD, as do we.
One is better but this is still awesome!! Gotta have it!.......2006-01-10
My children loved Beethovens Wig 1. I checked this one out at the library. Then, we decided we had to have this one too.
Yes, one is the best but 2 is still wonderful.
Save yourself the shipping and order both at the same time.
We all thoroughly enjoy it. My 4 yr old can name these classicals when he hears them elsewhere and he can hum these beautiful songs. Much better than kiddie rhymes and Disney jingles. Culture your children the funniest way!!
Absolute joy, and endless fun!.......2005-11-15
The tunes and word stay with you and before you know it, you are signing them along. My two kids (ages 9 and 7) ask me to put the CD on as soon as we get into the car. What a wonderful and fun way to get them to love classical music!

French is probably the only language in the world that can make the most trivial idea sound grandiloquent. Imagine what it can do when the poetic Romance language is set to children's songs. It entertains and educates, bien sûr (of course)! UniVerse of Song: French is the fun and informative follow-up to UniVerse of Song: Spanish, and seems an ideal tool for starting second-language learning with elementary phrases and basic songs. Jean Rene and his versatile backing combo help make a handful of bilingual kids into lively teachers. It doesn't matter if your native tongue is English or French--the record playfully teaches kids both languages by using common French and English nursery songs such as "Frère Jacques," "Alouette," the ever-delightful "Sur le Pont d'Avignon," "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star," "Wheels on the Bus," "London Bridge," and others. Along the way, listeners can also pick up useful expressions in French that sound, well, almost diplomatic. Now, bring on the Chinese and Russian versions of UniVerse of Song, and soon we can send kids to the UN Security Council. --Martin Keller
Customer Reviews:
Among my favorite kid's albums!.......2007-05-22
I think that this CD is so cute! The songs are well chosen favorites and for the most part (Happy Birthday excepted:) really very nicely performed. They alternate between French and English to teach French vocab. They use kids for alot of it and my 17 month old breaks out in a smile when she hears their little voices. It seems to be one of her favorites too.
Useful .......2007-05-04
I found this CD useful for learning French myself and trying to teach my 1 year old son. The English translation is very handy when you are starting out in French and useful for instance while driving or when you are busy and can't refer to the written translations. The music is mostly very nice and some of the tracks are beautiful like "its raining its pouring" and "clair de lune"
As my French progresses I find the constant intrusions in English annoying and I prefer to CDs now that are all in French. Some of the English speaking in the CD is also very cheesy.
Okay, but not that good........2006-06-04
This CD is okay for parents who want to teach their children French. But Jean Rene's voice sounds like that of Chuck E Cheese. Mr. Rene probably dressed up in the costume to record this album, so I am not a fan of it. I do not recommend this album to parents who do not like taking their kids to Chuck E Cheese's.
Tried Many - this is one of the best.......2005-11-11
I took French immersion in school for a few years and have fortunately retained some of it. I wanted my kids to have some base in other languages in case they ever wanted to pursue such learning. Besides - most of the world speaks several languages! Kid's songs seemed like a natural way to start to do it. I tried several CD's, and this one is by far the best. The kids immediately recognized songs they knew in English, and began to learn the French words as well. The voices are very good, the kids especially. It is very engaging to my kids when they hear the other kids sing.
I have found the mix of some English and French to be very good for learning, and the quick lesson in the children's voices between songs is good, and fast (and you can always skip it right away too).
If you were more advanced - the English and French might be a bit intrusive. For those with bilingual children - I have also enjoyed the 100% French set called, "Mes Chansons Preferees" - by Kidzup. It has almost no recognizable English kid songs - but the French folk songs are surprisingly excellent and fun. My kids have a few favourites there too.
Overall - this is the one my kids enjoyed the most and gets played frequently.
another disappointment!.......2005-11-08
Ugh! If you want to buy this to help your children learn French, be forwarned that there is VERY LITTLE French on this album. The female vocalist's voice isn't all that lovely and there is way too much English sung and spoken (and I can't quite understand why -- there doesn't seem to be much logic to when and why it's spoken). Sure, wheels on the bus is cute and fun, but it's mainly in English. What's the point??

Despite American schools' penchant for introducing foreign language at the middle-school level, research continues to prove that the earlier a child is exposed to a second language, the more likely she/he is to become bilingual. Based upon this tenet, in addition to Music for Little People's strong commitment to multicultural edu-tainment for children, the label has issued Uni Verse of Song as the first in a series of bilingual recordings especially created for children from preschool through fourth-grade levels. Featuring acclaimed artist Maria del Rey, she is here joined by a group of children singing standard American tunes in both English and Spanish. Oftentimes, verses as in "She'll Be Comin' Round the Mountain," are sung in English and directly followed by a translation in Spanish, thus making the language come to life with both fun and content. --Paige La Grone
Customer Reviews:
Just what I was looking for!.......2007-06-29
This CD has Spanish and English. I love that you get to hear the Spanish part right after the English in many cases. Then they do a word review after each song. The music is fun and happy.
NOT SUNI PAZ, BUT STILL A MUST HAVE.......2007-05-27
A must have for anyone with kids or grandkids. I really like Suni Paz, but I am glad I have both. Highly recommended.
My kids love it! (and me too).......2006-05-04
I bought this music CD for my first child over 5 years ago. 2 more kids later I am buying it again. It has well-known songs in both English and Spanish languages. As a Spanish-speaking mother of three little kids ages 6, 3 and 1 I am very content with the way they translated the songs for the little ears. Despite the fact that my kids speak very well both languages, they love to hear the translation of frequently used words and I enjoy listening to the Spanish songs translated into English. It is absolutely a well spent money.
Had it for years and love it!.......2006-04-11
Lost my original copy on a road trip and ordered another. We can't live without this. Our kids are bilingual and the mixing of the spanish and English in the songs has not been a problem. They know the words without turning off one language to hear another. A true bilingual is not translating in the brain...but is associating in both languages. Arroz is the white granules we eat and so is rice. There is no confusion for our 2 daughters and 6 niece and nephews who listen to these songs (and ALL are bilingual). This is a fun CD and very helpful!
Perfect gift for Children.......2006-03-16
I love this CD. I bought it for my two grandsons. They love it. She has such a wonderful voice. She also explains at the end of each song what the words mean. It's GREAT!

Customer Reviews:
First listen to Oliva Tremor Control's Dusk at Cubist Castle.......2006-04-16
I got the Colicot Asleep in the Poppies album because Amazon.com recommended it to me and usually Amazon's recommendations hit the mark. This is not a bad album at all (I rate it 4 out of 5 stars), but being the Olivia Tremor Control fan that I am, I can't help but notice that almost each song has a direct lifting from the Dusk at Cubist Castle album. Down to the use and stylings of the instruments. For example, the sound of a track being rewound then sped up, the creepy theramin, the big fuzzy guitar. Also the choice of subject is increadibly similar.
Again, I am not saying that this a bad album at all it's just too dang similar to not notice. Really.
Plays like a movie on acid..........2006-01-17
Probably the most bizarre..."thing" I've ever heard. Not to say it's bad. I just don't think it does the album justice by calling it merely an "album". Why? Because it's so much more than just an "album". Basically the premise of the story is about a Coquelicot that falls in love with a man in one of her dreams while she's asleep. Of course, if I explained further it would probably necessitate a short essay. But while the story is intricate, and unbelievably detailed itself, the music is even moreso. Not unlistenable by any means, but perhaps bewildering on first/second/third listen. Kevin Barnes twists his poetry into fairy tales in free verse and prose. Rhymes come together in ways not thought possible. The imagination at work is far beyond comprehensible. But this makes it all the more fascinating. The melodies are there, too, but unconventionally so. Generally the melodies change quickly, creating a bizarre.... I'm ranting. It's beautiful is what it is. Totally worth your money. Check it out.
Good Great Got It.......2005-09-02
On first listen I thought "...man,this is so stupid?" but as soon as the second listen came around it was just off the hook crazy good, I don't know why I changed my mind like that about this CD but it just turned out that way. It's kinda like a Musical Play but in there style, like pretty much every song talks about the same thing although you don't get bored because with Of Montreal they do a lot of tempo changes so your more focused at the music than anything else really. 22 Songs so it's defenitly takes awhile to get through it but it's all worth it, plus there are some really funny stuff on this disc but I don't want to give it away
Buy It Or Forever Suffer The Consiquence Which Is Missing Out!
Amazing album!.......2005-06-07
My personal fav. - Let's Go For A Walk
So touching.
All of the songs are great actually.
Funny, miniature stories, too.
What A Concept (Album)!.......2005-05-08
This album is Of Montreal's Concept Piece, and it works quite effectively for about half an hour, then starts to grate a little. A triumph of style over substance, it's akin to eating a boxful of fruit loops cereal- it tastes sweet as all get out, but you feel quite sick afterwards.Nevertheless, I'm a huge fan of concept albums (Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Dark Side of the Moon, Kid A), so I give this album a more than fair four star rating. But then again I might just be on a sugar rush from listening to this album.

Christmas is the season for whipping out those holiday-specific standard recordings. This splendid gift by Chanticleer should top the list, for one will never tire of this a cappella choir's interpretations. With selections spanning the last five centuries of Latin, German, English, Spanish, and French festive fare, this recording exemplifies the sacrifice of the ego to the higher form of choral sound. Jacob Handl's "Mirabile Mysterium" takes you on a trip into the chromatic wonderlands, where you temporarily lose tonal balance. Victoria's eerie and dissonant "O Magnum Mysterium" treats us to rich voices swelling out of one organic whole. The phenomenal blend and perfect intonation elevate this recording above others in its category. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

Pure Christmas.......2007-01-16
If you are looking for traditional madrigal sounding holiday music, this CD is for you. I have purchased this CD several times because I just keep giving them away. Everyone I've ever introduced it to has loved it. This finely polished group has a pure sound matched by no other. If you weren't looking at the CD notes you would never know this is only a group of 12 men.
Christmas magic.......2007-01-10
A CD evocative of Christmas past and present. Beautiful harmonies both wistful and ringing with joy. Buy it for next Christmas!
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-12-02
Chanticleer, the U.S. equivalent of the British King's Singers, is a full-time classical vocal ensemble named for the rooster in Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales'. It was founded in 1978 by Louis Botto, a tenor, and for a while was its artistic director. They have achieved critical acclaim all over the world and their repertoire is very extensive and varied. Just commenting on a few of the selections on this disc:
'Es ist ein Ros entsprungen' is a hymn that originated in western Germany around 1500, and is best known in the harmonization by Michael Praetorious published around 1609. The poem used biblical imagery that pictures the newborn Christ growing forth from the "stem of Jesse'(the father of King David), as foretold in Isiah 11. The metaphorical writings of the Middle Ages depict the patriarchal figure of Jesse as a rose bush.
'O Magnum mysterium',Victoria's most famous motet, uses a subline text from the Christmas Vespers. This is incredibly beautiful with its interweaving polyphony which leads to a hushed choral declamation at the words "O beata Virgo"(O Blessed Virgin) ending with a Alleulia Section.
'Here is the Little Door' is from a set of three "carol anthems", dating from 1918-1920. Herbert Howells was revered as one of the 20th century's most distinguished Choral composers, and I recently discovered him thru the album " by the Corydon Singers conducted by Matthew Best. It includes Howells Requiem in addition to the Vaughan Williams Mass in G Minor. It is the most heavenly somewhat exotic choral music I think I have heard in many years of listening; I highly recommend it.
'Glory to the newborn King'. Joseph Jennings, Georgia native and present musical director of Chanticleer, has often drawn upon his roots to create special gospel and spiritual arrangements of familiar songs. 'Glory to the newborn King' features four traditional songs combined to showcase Chanticleer's unique choral virtuosity!
This is an excellent group of carols, and it is always refreshing to hear 'new' melodies, arrangements; a joy for the ear!!!!
Simply beautiful.......2006-02-20
The title and artist' name says it all - Christmas with clear (pure) singing. Glorious in all respects.
It's that time of year...for Chanticleer!.......2005-12-20
Walking the busy malls to the multichannel Muzak of every old Christmas song interpreted in hiphop, jazz, idiosyncratic 'rethinkings' by famous soloists as well as replays of Gene Autry, Bing Crosby etc., it is a relief to return home (or if fortunate, to the concert hall) and hear the more uplifting music of the season through the ages. And despite reliance on some old favorite Messiah recordings, and carols by Kings College Choir, the one CD that seems to reign supreme is this Chanticleer release SING WE CHRISTMAS from 1995!
These twelve male voices create an ambience that can only be labeled 'spiritual', so resonant and exquisitely performed are each of the generous works on this recording. The moods pass through Praetorius, Victoria, Bach and traditional carols of unknown authorship to works by Ives, Billings, Holst, Guerrero, Howells and Sametz. The repertoire is both familiar and rarely heard and the result of combining all these forms is the truest form of Christmas spirit on record: this is music to cleanse the Muzak blitz! Highly recommended. Grady Harp, December 05

A CRUCIAL COLLECTION OF HYMNS FROM VARIOUS VIRGIN FEASTS LIKE OUR LADY OF SORROWS; CROWNED BY THE ABBESS'S CHANT OF PATER NOSTER.......2007-03-09
Opening with a rousing tolling from the new Abbatial bell tower, this exquisite collection of hymns and chant from the Feasts of Saint Lucy, Saint Agnes, Saint Cecilia, Saint Agatha, and Our Lady of Sorrows (including the well-known Stabat Mater) is crowned with a deeply moving solo chant by the Founder of this Abbey of Regina Laudis, the so recently deceased Lady Abbess Reverend Mother Benedict Duss, OSB, whose new biography we now expect soon in May of 2007 from Ignatian Press. To hear her once again in advanced age intone the Kyrie and chant completely and with great inner strength the Pater Noster as so often throughout the life of this monastic choir, as well as the Collect of Our Lady of Sorrows, is to unite heart and mind, body and soul, in a sacred moment within an eternal and a sacramental dimension, full of God's loving grace, and challenge, and a prophetic calling to continual conversion in Christ.
The recording of the chant by this living Gregorian Choir of sacred women is perfect in every way, although on my small player I found some overtones in the upper registers. Certainly this was the fault of my inadequate player, and I shall try it again. The cassette tape copy which kept me company for thousands of my miles in my small truck finally separated, and its sound was full and deep until then, very present, in fact so much so I felt I must arise to bow while driving whenever the Gloria Patri et Filii came on.
As subtle and precise as is the chant itself, the extensive booklet informs and educates not only the initiate but all of us already familiar with these sacred tones. The full text of the hymns are presented in the 45 page well-illuminated booklet, along with English translation. The translation of scriptural verses is drawn "from the Confraternity Version of The Holy Bible: The Book of Psalms and the Canticles of the Roman Breviary, published by the St. Anthony Guild Press. This edition was chosen because of its reliability and because its numbering of the Psalms corresponds to that used in the Graduale Romanum, Antiphonale Monasticum, and Breviarium Monasticum. (p.39)" Therefore the anglophile yet Catholic listener should feel all confidence in the English translation employed in the accompanying text. Please note nevertheless the Nolite's English was drawn from the very well-regarded Jerusalem Bible.
What you might find most extraordinary about the English translations is that non-SCriptural yet very traditional hymns and sequence such as the Stabat Mater comes not only with a brief description of author. but also new English translations done at the Abbey in order to provide a fresh and simplified understanding of the profound meaning of these chants. As one who in my youth wished nothing more than to do precisely such sacred translations, I must restrain myself from contesting the words used, as any translation is treason, as they say. Rather I resolve to find what remains within my heart and mind to do as an exercise of prayerful contemplation the translation I might once have done, knowing full well this is now impossible. By this disk I may now view from a distance the Promised Land which might once have been attained.
Please purchase this disk and you will be greatly and overwhelmingly rewarded in so many dimensions. I find a profound homecoming in the stunning centerfold photo of the new Abbatial nave, a true and sturdy ship of our Faith. I weep once agian to view the beautiful bas-relief of the Holy Virgins here presented, and of Mother Placid's excellent Via Crucis. The photos of te two Abbesses are a strengthening and truly Ikonic joy (in the true sense of the word IKON, not the meaningless cliche it has now popularly and commercially become). The introduction includes brief biographies of Dr. Marier and of Tom P., the producer, but what follows is truly blessed, a one page biography of the Reverend Mother Benedict Duss, followed by an extensive interview with her regarding the essence of the Chant, concluding:
"When I hear the chant, I hear people at peace together (p. 9)"
A fine colleciton of hagiography follows, etc. Please give yourself the gift of this recording and its warmly embracing theological commentary.
Beautiful Benedictine Chant.......2002-11-16
Benedictine chant from the nuns of abbey of Regina Laudis. Really gives you the feeling of attending a beautiful service. The accompanying booklet gives the Latin text and English translation of each piece, the interesting history of the Abbey, and has some very nice photographs of the nuns. The album's production is very natural and has an ambient quality. The producer Tom Pomposello was interestingly enough a blues guitarist and Grammy award winning professor. Well worth having!
Perfect for Meditation.......2000-08-14
I was looking for music to use in my meditation and, since my path is women-spirituality based, I was pleased to come upon Women in Chant. What beautiful music. Although I am not Catholic, it hardly matters in terms of recognizing and appreciating the sacredness of these chants. I wonder at the dedication of the nuns of the Choir to perfect the intricacies of the songs. The accompanying informational booklet that describes the circumstances of the Virgin Martyrs and Our Lady of Sorrows was both interesting and poignant. If you love Gregorian Chant -- or if you would like to experience it ... if you have listened to choirs of women before -- or if you have never heard women's voices raised in chant ... whatever your past experience, I think you will enjoy and grow from this compilation.

This recording of 12th-century mystic Hildegard von Bingen's music is a sheer delight, a beautiful collection of compositions for which the Benedictine nun (considered a saint, although never formally canonized) claimed divine inspiration. Listening to singer Jocelyn Montgomery's gorgeous renditions, that's easy to believe. Lushly produced by David Lynch, Lux Vivens has a clarity and presence of sound that does the material justice. The accompaniment itself is fairly thin, confined to sparse instrumentation and the inclusion of crashing waves, wind, tolling bells, or birdsong; this allows the beauty of the melodies themselves to shine through unimpeded. The selections include both secular ("Battle and Transition," "Et Ideo") and sacred ("Gloria Patri," "Kyrie"), though it's the melodies that capture the listener's ear. Enchanting and often otherworldly, Lux Vivens is a listening experience that's both subtle and sublime. -- Genevieve Williams

The Divine Flame Within ~ Finding The Place Of Rest And Refreshment .......2006-04-01
'Lux Vivens' (Living Light) is nothing less than a mystical journey into the medieval spirituality and soul of Hildegard von Bingen. Performed by Jocelyn Montgomery who possesses a voice worthy of a solo position in the heavenly choir, you will be entranced by this beautiful -15 track- CD's exploration of Hildegard's interior world.
With limited instrumentation, Jocelyn is accompanied by the sounds of nature as provided by David Lynch; gentle rain, storm and thunder and birds chirping in the trees. One track even includes the sound of charging horses and swords clashing.
A great way to unwind at the end of the day, or prepare oneself for a spiritual respite in the middle of the everyday madness.
"Living Light" : the title says it all.......2005-12-07
So I'll admit that I purchased this album simply because of the fact that David Lynch(and don't forget his absolutly amazing partner is soundscape,John Neff)was involved, and also after reading the reviews here on amazon.I got EXACTLY what I expected, turned up a notch! This is the type of synth work I can honestly say doesn't sound much like synth at all,and it fits perfectly as a puzzle peice into this work.I like the two non-vocal tracks;the first(Flame and Vision) is a stupenous introduction to the music, lighting the fuse of this slow-burning masterpeice. The second would be a bit off-putting if the precise clarity of the swords wasn't as evident;one definate plus to having a film-maker with Lynch's expertise aboard to lend his fine-tuned ear.Ms. montgomery's performances of the Von Bingen classics can be summed up as subdued, yet magnificently triumphant! She is right up to par with such greats as Dawn Upshaw,Azam Ali(haven't heard that one,eh?DO NOT HESITATE to investigate this very talented new voice!),Jennifer Charles,Gigi, you name it.The manner in which she eases into uplifting(but not over-the-top)shows experience beyond her years, indeed.I cannot understand why so many "midevil"and"naturalist" individuals have refered to the album as a slap-in-the-face to their respective genre, the synths are barely existant! All I can tell you is that if I could only bring three albums to a campfire in the wilderness sitting by myself,I'd instantly choose this classic,Buckethead's "Electric Tears",and the Kronos Quartet's "Salome:Dances for Peace"(although "Black Angels" would also be tempting).
Music to sooth the savage pagan.......2003-11-05
I'm a pagan, but I can hear in this music something very special that transcends all the horror the RC church has visited on this planet. But the RCs have a very quirky history, especially when it comes to their "mystics". Indeed, a great many of the Catholic saints and mystics are ecclesiastical and hyper-dimensional enough to impress a nature-worshipper like me. The purity doesn't need a label. This particular version of von Bingen is a stroke of luck in that a modernist like David Lynch can actually climb out of his absurdist, Samuel Beckett-esque toilet long enough to do something that approaches this delicacy and sublimity. Still, seeing a Lynch film and listening to this CD is mental whiplash. I consider 2 pieces on this CD to be some of the best music I've ever encountered: "Viridissima" and "Clarissima". Especially "Clarissima". If I could only have one CD worth of music, Montgomery's "Clarissima" would be on it.
A Feather on the Breath of God.......2003-10-23
Sure, Miranda Sex Garden was a wonderful group who delivered their music with a sly wink. Not so Jocelyn Montgomery & David Lynch with Lux Vivens. Hildegard was a genius, mystic & the founder of a spiritually & politically powerful abbey. Her music, while complex in expression, is composed to be sung with unadorned simplicity. If this music is performed outdoors where bells are ringing & birds are chirping, that's ambient sound. Here it just gets in the way. If this is where you first encounter Hildegard of Bingen, that's great. But do move on to the recording that began it all, "A Feather on the Breath of God," featuring Emma Kirby, a musician who specializes in early music & who probably inspired Montgomery to form a group like Miranda Sex Garden in the first place.
Lynch's musical concepts are showcased best on the Twin Peaks soundtrack & the ethereal Julie Cruise album, "Floating Into the Night."

One of kind CD.......2002-10-11
I love this CD. It's so enrapturing and beautiful. Unlike the Enigma stuff, which is filled with cheesy drum beats, "Lux Vivens" is just Jocelyn's amazing voice combined with moody music and some sound effects (by David Lynch no less!). The result is absolutely brilliant. My only gripe with this CD is that there should have been more music. I never wanted the CD to end.
BTW, "Lux Vivens" was made in 1998. Where's Jocelyn's follow-up CD?

A Walk In the Past.......2007-03-30
This album is the very first Bebo ever recorded (you might know that). If your reading this in 2007 you should know that this CD is worth a buy. If you look closly at the track listings you will notice that Fabric of Verse has three songs that reappear on Ten Thousand Days. On this Cd the three songs are all more acoustic than TTD (not sure if the hammer holds can get more acoustic). These songs are great but the original content is even better. The song Walking Away is my personal favorite, this song you will find, is unlike nothing Bebo has recorded since. That fact is sad because this song is so amazing... the song has a guitar solo that just rocks.
Plain and simple die hard Bebo fans should have this album... it does contain mostly slower, more acoustic songs. Which is fine by me.
Bebo Norman's debut.......2005-09-24
This was an independent album and the very first release by Bebo Norman. It is very rare and hard-to-find. If you own his other albums and are interested in this one, the best place to get it is at his website, BeboNorman.com (It is only $20 and is a much better deal than buying it from a third-party vendor who is charging more because it is such a hard-to-find album.) I hope this review was helpful to you.
The Lyrical Poet: Bebo Norman.......2000-06-21
I was first introduced to Bebo's music several years ago when he was still a "struggling" artist. This cd is a wonderful journey of the soul. His lyrics speak to the most tender parts of us, yet several songs do it while remaining upbeat and quick-tempoed. The front cd cover gives a brief background for each song, giving insight to why and how it came to be. I like that Mr. Norman is willing to share that with his listeners. The music on The Fabric of Verse is mostly acoustic guitar with other instruments added as needed. I highly reccommend this cd to those who not only like excellent music, but also lyrics that make you evaluate and appreciate your own life, too! You'll also like this if you like Jennifer Knapp, Caedmon's Call and early Sixpence None the Richer.
sometimes i wonder how someone..........2000-04-28
can worship God with such a feeling... in a recording studio? it's obvious Bebo Norman has done just that, when you listen to the feeling in his music. i especially like "the hammer holds" when you read the words, the meaning HITS you. it's great.
A first-rate first album.......1999-12-18
I first discovered Bebo Norman during Caedmon's Call's 1997-98 tour. His music touched my heart from the first song to the last. I met him after a show and he is a genuinely good guy with a heart for God. His indie release Fabric of Verse is an exceptional first effort. Bebo's songwriting is heart-wrenching, his voice soulful, and his guitar skills outstanding. Especially strong songs that don't appear on Ten Thousand Days include Angelfire and Curtis Creek. Buy this album -- it's well worth any price you pay. The only thing that tops his two albums is listening to him live.

Insane or a Saint?.......2000-11-03
I first became of aware of the controversial seeress and prophetess Hildegard von Bingen a few years back and was fascinated and further explored her life. Critisized by many as nothing more than a mentally and physically tortured soul who suffered from hallucinations and hailed by many as a medieval saint whose visions, life and writings were inspired by divine intervention. Take a listen to this CD, which is based on her "Symphony of the Harmony of Celestial Revelation" and there can be no doubt. Take a listen and you be the judge. The theme of this music is light and the sound is sheer beauty. The music is vocalized by a group of women called "Tapestry" and they weave magic with their voices. The harmonizing and solo performances are extraordinary and inspirational. Upon listening you wil forget that you are listening to four voices, the music makes you forget all as the "light' fills your mind and you transend worldly distractions. The fact that you are listening to voices only is astounding alone because the voice captures your attention and has you so focused that you do not notice the absence of musical accompanyment. Our modern ears are used to hearing musical accompanyment with vocals so it is very refreshing to hear this musical bliss. This is medieval chant that is performed with ecstatic intensity. Like much of the medieval music that uses unmeasured chants, Hildegard's music displays unique and wonderful expressions of pacing and expression. A special cycle of motets are written for "Tapestry" to perform on this CD entitled"Circling Wheel" with text by Hildegard, in Latin as she never set them to music. The hour long medieval experience is unique and an experience that is quite heavenly. As intended, "Celestial Light" fills you with light. File this under otherworldly and inspirational, music that is good for your soul.
Peaceful, soothing, one of the best........1999-06-19
An excellent way to begin sampling Hildegarde von Bingen. This is a simply luscious CD--not so soothing as to be downright bland, but serene and intricate at the same time.
