Album Details
Along with her great achievements, she has always kept her ears open for a decent contemporary pop tune, especially in the 1970's. Here are fifteen characteristic songs from that decade that receive the distinctive Cleo treatment, i.e. a meticulous and quietly dramatic approach to musical nuance and lyrical detail that enables her to go straight to the heart and soul of a song.

Vintage Cleo Laine.......2007-06-12
Cleo is timeless and unique - this isn't my "favorite" but is close.
The Best of the seventies .......2006-12-06
This CD features many of Dame Cleo's most popular recordings from the 1970s. Standout tracks include some of the best known songs associated with Cleo Laine..... "He Was Beautiful" (lyrics by Cleo), "Feelings" (with John Williams), "Send In The Clowns" and "Streets Of London". Also found are Cleo's interpretaions of some of the very best pop around at the time. "Just The Way You Are" "When I Need You" and "Let's Have A Quiet Night In" from the underrated "Gonna Get Through" album (not yet released on CD). Also includes the beautiful "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life" and "Killing Me Softly". This album may not appeal to those more familiar with Cleo's jazz albums, but anyone who wants to hear the very best of 1970's pop sung by a unique and exceptional singer should buy this CD.
Not what I'd hoped for..........2006-06-19
It was Ms. Laine's dynamic cameo in the thoroughly entertaining movie LAST OF THE BLOND BOMBSHELLS which prompted me to investigate her musical work. This CD sampler, however, proved something of a disappointment. Drawing largely on the easy listening classics of the 1960's and 1970's, Ms. Laine essentially phones in her performance. I once heard languid-voiced Perry Como described as a man "who sings while lying in bed." Well, it strikes me that Ms. Laine was lying there beside him when she recorded this album. I waited out song after song for her to cut loose in the tradition of belters like Garland and Carr, but I was left unsatisfied. Only on "Killing Me Softly" did Ms. Laine invest the harrowing words with some semblance of strong emotion, as though the music had, at last, touched a responsive chord inside her, and I must say that her rendition of that one song is the mostpowerful I've heard.

Product Description
when i was writing the songs on this album, i felt i was experiencing a kind of quantum leap or personal gestalt. there were so many internal breakthroughs that happened to me personally, emotionally, musically, & spiritually. and i am a person that is about breaking barriers. thats why i chose to call it smashing the ceiling - magdalen hsu-li, "smashing the ceiling the new album by magdalen hsu-li showcases outstanding performances by magdalen on vocals, guitar, and piano; drummer matt chamberlain (tori amos, fiona apple, john mayer, faith hill, garbage, kanye west, shakira), bassist jon evans (tori amos, paula cole), keyboardist julie wolf (ani difranco, catie curtis), violinist/violist eyvind kang (john zorn), and guitarist tim young (wayne horvitz) smashing the ceiling" was an incredible album to make. magdalen says, "the songs felt completely inspired as i wrote them, as if i were a channel and they were coming from some higher source. I was lucky to be able to work with phenomenally talented musicians like matt, jon, julie, tim, and eyvind, as well as co-producers within the close-knit seattle community. in the studio there was synergy because of the shared musical histories and friendships between many of the players. this music was in many ways a community effort. smashing the ceiling highlights magdalens ethereal and arousing voice on songs such as mary magdalene and change the world. several people have asked why i chose to write a song about one of the most controversial figures in biblical history. mary magdalene is both an autobiographical song about my life as well as a blend of various biblical mythologies about mary magdalene. she is one of the most iconic, provocative, loved, hated, and mysterious women in history and her story has been misinterpreted through the centuries, so i felt it was time to help redefine her story in a more positive light. change the world is a tour de force call for consciousness in the ways we see ourselves collectively, individually, politically, and culturally. throughout my life i have encountered many situations where in order to achieve my goals, i had to challenge and break through my own preconceived ideas, doubts, and fears to overcome obstacles. the song reminds us that anytime we are able to have such a breakthrough, we create a ripple effect that can inspire. other noteworthy moments on the album are songs about love, loss, identity, and reckoning such as; the shimmering sweet hereafter, the iridescent breakup song everything, the deliciously troubled all those words, the pop-driven i am of no ordinary girl, and soulful art-country-tinged love songs like where would i be and straight on til morning. two "smashing" moments on the album are northern light and take me there. northern light is the moment on the album where the "ceiling" is musically-metaphorically broken says magdalen, while recording take me there there was a moment of effortless musical convergence during the take. take me there is about going back the place inside yourself where you are whole and creativity exists in it's purest state. I am able to access that place through songwriting, thus i am never happier or more fulfilled than when i am writing songs. i love trying to figure out how songs are written, magdalen says, songwriting fascinates me intellectually and emotionally. whether i am writing a pop hit or an arty composition just for myself, my ultimate goal is to write and perform universal songs that mirror peoples feelings, touch their hearts, & mean the world to them. when the words and music combine in that special way and the listener feels as if they are hearing the soundtrack to their own life, those are the moments i live for. i feel its my destiny and my way of giving and receiving love.

A marked transition from her earlier work.......2007-05-21
I loved Magdalen Hsu-Li's previous work and this is no exception, but it is very different than her previous albums. I think this is a reflection of her getting older and becoming seemingly more at peace with everything. It's not as angry, as accusing. It's a very peaceful album, if that makes sense. The two tracks that I love and can listen to over and over are "Mary Magdalen" and "No Ordinary Girl". I recommend it to Magdalen fans. If ever I get the chance to see her in concert again (she performed at my alma mater a few years ago), I'll definitely take it.

Album Description
"The Last Wild Place" is country diva Lacy J. Dalton's first move back to her singer-songwriter roots since leaving Nashville, and showcases Lacy's remarkable voice and writing talents at their finest. This heartfelt music is acoustic-based Folk/Americana and ranges from the quiet introspective to the rollicking good time.
Customer Reviews:
still the same old Lacy J.......2006-11-06
Lacy J. Dalton is pitching away like always in "The Last Wild Place," by which she means Alaska, or anywhere else that has some element remaining untouched by man. Her voice remains as compelling as always, and the approach to the songs is clean. For a fan of Country, this album will be unsatisfying, without enough twang or irony to provide the edge that sells the genre. But any John Denver fan will love this album. I think she's reached a postion where she does not have to care about commercial success, and that will pay dividends in the quality of her product, as time goes on. Lacy J. is going down the track that James Talley did. This one is a little self-indulgent and whiny, but I expect to see that refined as she continues.
her life's work.......2005-07-28
Here it is! Here's what you all knew Lacy J. Dalton could be if Nashville would have let her. This is the culmonation of a lifetime's work and it's a brilliant classic. Five stars, heck, make it seven!!
Lacy strikes again!.......2005-02-02
This cd shows off the depth of this wonderful songstress;for some unknown reason her play time is limited and that is a real shame as this music will give endless hours of great country listening.Lacy continues to be one of the greatest female country artists and hopefully she continues to record and perform in the future-highly recommend this entertaining cd.
You won't be sorry...........2004-11-25
I purchased this CD before it even came out. Lacy J. Dalton has been my favorite female country singer for many years. I believe this may be her best album ever! Listen to the Wind, Heart of Hearts, Standin' Knee Deep, Slip Away and Sanctuary are my favorites, but all 12 cuts are really good. This lady can really sing and her band can really play! You won't be sorry if you purchase this CD! There is nothing else out there like it. Lacy is really one of a kind, with the most distinctive voice in the industry.
