Spirit of St. Louis
Editorial Reviews

Clichés have gotten something of a bad rap. Essentially, they're the most instantly recognizable attributes of any artistic endeavor. Louis Armstrong's were his sweetly gruff, speaking/singing voice and deceptively simple Dixieland jazz trumpet flourishes. The Manhattan Transfer's clichés are the group's slick jazz and harmonically perfect takes on the traditional vocal quartet. The common ground of this Manhattan Transfer tribute to Armstrong may not be entirely discernable at first listen, but that's the beauty of music--influences can sometimes reveal themselves in ways that surprise and delight the performer as much as the listener. Crucially, the veteran quartet wisely dispense with their sometimes predictable MO, allowing producer Craig Street (Me'Shell Ndegeocello, k.d. lang, Cassandra Wilson) to challenge them with a series of arrangements that wed vintage instrumentation to a distinctly non-vintage set of instrumentalists (including Los Lobos' Steve Berlin, modern jazz horn great Jon Hassell, Beck alumni Smokey Hormel, and adventuresome guitarist/loopist David Torn). The producer also allowed Transfer members to pick their own Armstrong favorites for interpretation, giving the band members unusually free solo spotlights (including Tim Hauser's one-take wonder "Blue Again," a deliciously lazy reading of "Sugar" by Cheryl Bentyne, Janis Siegel's "The Blues are Bewin'," and Alan Paul's playful "Gone Fishin'"). The result is arguably the Transfer's best album in a decade, one that fuses their impeccable vocal perfectionism to Armstrong's still vibrant and soulful legacy. The result is anything but a cliché. -- Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Tim Hauser get out of the production seat.......2004-09-23
What has happened? Not so like they used to be which is fine but hey, you were once really good and now!!!!!!!! You have lost me as a fan.
Not their best but still entertaining.......2002-02-11
I like this cd. It's still has the nice upbeat tunes as in their last albums. I recently saw them in concert. I can't wait till they get around to the Phoenix area again!

Fantastic.......2001-12-02
Just when you think they have done it all, they do it all again.
The Manhattan Transfer is priceless. There is no one in the whole world like them. Unlimited energy and creativity. They tour and they record, and they get better every year. Tim Hauser is a musical genius. To have found Janis Siegel, Alan Paul and Cheryl Bentyne in a single generation and created a style that respects all of their talents is truly a work of art. They exude a modern sense of life that is pure happiness. In the words of a philosopher, they have owned their own lives and spent them growing. Please buy this CD and everything else they have ever done. You will thank me.
THE SPIRIT IS LOST.......2001-06-12
Don't get me wrong Manhattan Transfer is a great band with some of the most amazing voices that can sing any Barber Shop Quartet off the stage.
However this album, which I have to say is one of their worst is awful. First who did they get to engineer and produce this album? A five year old?
The production is so haphazard, lazy, juvenile and just sloppy. Their voices are in fine form but can't help save this disaster.
Songs like "Blues are Brewin'" and "When You Wish Upon A Star" are lost in the translation believe it or not. I can't stress to you how bad the production is on this album. It sounds like MT were on a budget and tried to do the best they could with what they had.
It is so sad to see a group go from "Boy from New York City" to a sloppy, dismal, depressing "Wish Upon A Star", it sounds like they have gone to the bottom of their craft.
I give them 2 stars instead of 1 because of who they are and I am sure after this sure fire flop they have nowhere else to go but UP!
Manhattan Transfer: This effort is your weakest link....GOODBYE!

A Perfect Recording.......2005-12-03
At its best, film music aurally heightens the drama, pathos, passion, joy and emotional intensity of the visual experience. And when film music is artfully written and skillfully performed, it can create a magnificent aesthetic experience.
Richard Kaufman and the London Symphony Orchestra have created an album featuring some of film music's greatest moments, all of them related to flight. The title track, "The High and the Mighty" features a theme that literally soars, capturing the sweeping energy and pensive drama of the film. Bruce Broughton's "The Boy Who Could Fly" is a beautifully lyrical and tender work.
There are many great films about military flight and fliers, and this recording features some of the best music of the genre. One of the highlights of this album is the great Prelude and Fugue from "Spitfire" by Sir William Walton. One feels the tension and courage exhibited by the great pilots of the RAF. Ron Goodwin's "633 Squadron" and Craig Safan's "The Last Starfighter" are two significant contributions to the genre.
Some of the best loved music about flying is from comedies, and there is no funnier and more clever score than the one Elmer Bernstein created for "Airplane!" Featuring a choir that literally screams, this music is laugh-out-loud funny. With it's homage to John William, "Airplane!" is joined on this disc by one of the greatest pieces of "flying" music ever written - John Williams' brilliant Flying Theme from "E.T. The Extraterrestrial."
While the music itself is brilliant, the performance by Richard Kaufman and the London Symphony is breathtaking. This orchestra has a long history of performing the soundtracks for motion pictures, but this recording features performances that are, for the most part, even better than the originals. The brass plays with more richness and the strings with more finesse than can be heard in a movie theater.
Richard Kaufman has created a perfect album - a compilation of film music built around the theme of flight that covers every emotion, every nuance and every sensation of the genre - performed with more skill and passion than has ever been captured on a recording before. You have to hear this one!

reacquaintance with waxman.......2007-04-22
i honestly don't know why i bought this cd. but there is a great deal to love about it. the main thing i love is the first suite, which is highlighted by an arrangement of his 'elegy for strings' for piano trio.
the second surprise is the witty set of variations on 'auld lang syne'.
the third is the price--very affordable and not a disappointment.
Old Acquaintances.......2000-04-29
The violinist on this recording really is supurb. You have entered the world of a pro that feels his music, commits to the era it was written for,and understands the composers emotions. The Four Scenes of Childhood express a special sentiment. What a treat to hear the first of its recording.

Wonderful!.......2002-08-20
Not as mature as Winds of Nagual but Mr. Colgrass displays wonderful artistic expression and orchestration. I bought the album for Mr. Druckman's work and as usual quite happy. Still doesn't match Prism but definitely worth hearing!
Don't waste your money........1999-06-06
E.g. 'Aureole': 18 mins of nice but empty noises. Why bother? There are so many better disks and specially better modern disks (e.g. search Zwilich & Mehta).

Atlantic crossing.......2005-04-26
Ellen Foley was born in St Louis (hence the albumtitle, also illustrating the journey she made from America to Europe with reference to the plane Charles Lindbergh flew across the Atlantic in 1927) and will probably be best remembered for her femme fatale-singing on Meat Loaf's "Paradise by the dashboard light". Her solodebut in 1979, "Nightout", sounded very all-American (although produced by Hunter/Ronson) with songs like the Springsteenesque "We belong to the night", coverrippers like Stones "Stupid girl" making Jagger's original recording sound like a lullaby and Graham Parkers "Thunder and rain", along with a bunch of hypnotic songs like "Young lust", "Hideaway" and "Sad song". But "Spirit of St Louis" is a new scene altogether. Instead of pursuing the American road of rock Foley took a giant leap of music and landed in Europe. Just as American as the debut sounded, the European influences flow through this album.
Produced by former boyfriend/Clashmember Mick Jones (who shares the mike with Ellen on "Torchlight"), with songs mainly written by Mick Jones/Joe Strummer and with The Clash as her backinggroup - how could this album be anything but sensational? An outstanding masterpiece, one of a kind - although not five stars (due to a couple of halfhearted tracks) - but sentenced to silence by radiostations, since there's virtually no possible hitsingle. This is an album which demands concentration from the listener. The journey begins with the beautiful opener, "The shuttered palace" - an alltime classic and beautifully arranged. The final song, "In the killing hour", revokes memories of Edith Piaf's "Non, je ne regrette rien". In between, you have weird-but-lovely songs like "Theatre of crulety" and "The death of the pscyhoanalyst of Salvador Dali", "My legionaire" and Tymon Dogg's "Beautiful waste of time" and "Game of a man", to mention some.
I love this album just as much as "Nightout", because they're each others total opposites. From the heavy rock and all the promises made on "Nightout" to the Europeanstyled challenge of "Spirit of St Louis", it is like travelling from one music pole to another. Both albums illustrate the musical diversity of this singer and "Spirit of St Louis" is in every way remarkable. Hats off to Jones/Strummer naturally, this must be on the top of their musical CV in the alltime musical Hall of Fame.
After this record, Ellen did "Another breath", in 1983 - produced by Vini Poncia. Not a very memorable record, sorry to say. From then on, mainly silence. Come back, Ellen, wherever you are!
Dear Confused.......2004-01-20
The album you are thinking about is "Night Out" and yes it's a corker.
It's very difficult to get on cd.
There is a Very Best of that has six of the Night Out tracks
Wish they would rerelease Night Out with bonus tracks.............
Slightly confused.......2003-11-18
I'm slightly confused. I thought I remember this album containing a whole different set of tunes? I owned it when it first came out, and you folks are right, shes's a great talent, but the album I'm thinking of had great tunes like "We Belong to the Night", "What's the Matter, Baby" and a cover of the Stones tune "Stupid Girl", with a great accompanying band featuring Mick Ronson, Ian Hunter, and others. Maybe there is yet another Ellen Foley album? (perhaps long out of print). Time does have a habit of scrambling the synapses...
Ellen Foley's Long Unavailable Masterpiece Resurfaces.......2002-08-17
Ellen Foley (remember her from Bat Out of Hell and Night Court?) is in possession of one of the great voices of modern pop music. Originally released in 1981 and ignored by the general public, this brilliant collection of songs has been remastered and released in the UK. If you like, The Motels, Ronnie Spector and The Clash, you may love this. Most of the songs were written by the Clash and it was produced by Joe Strummer. She covers so many genres here, that it might have been a bit confusing for the general public. My favorite cut is The Death of the Psychoanalyst of Slavador Dali written by Mick Jones and Joe Strummer. Her performance on this song is an emotional rainstorm. She covers an Edith Piaf standard, Mon Legionaire, and again, pure emotion is what it's all about. The bonus track of Le Palais Secret is a great suprise. A jewel that should not be missed.
Life After Meatloaf.......2000-02-21
While Meatloaf was trying to recycle flying rodents and demonic idols into yet another symphonic pseudo-rock opus (1981), Ellen said good-bye and teamed up with Jones and Strummer (The Clash) to record "Spirit of St. Louis." Close your eyes and imagine The Clash led by a lady with not only an punk attitude, but also an ability to carry a melody. Spirit opens with "The Shuttered Palace" where Ellen beckons the listener, "Won't you come inside my sheltered palace." Without warning, we're lured into the crashing drums and heavy bass lines of "Torchlight." Spirit successfully juxtaposes mid-tempo tunes like "How Glad I Am" with no-holds-barred rockers like "Phase Of Travel." Minor annoyances include "My Legionnaire"(better suited for Broadway) and "Le Palais Secret" ("The Shuttered Palace" sung in French). Hot Pick: "M.P.H" is guaranteed to get you up from the couch and strutting around the living room like Mick Jagger.

Do you want a narrator over the music?.......2001-10-14
Waxman is from the tradition of romantic Hollywood film music that flourished from the 1930s to the early 1960s. He is a very fine, often inspired craftsman, on a par with Max Steiner, Alfred Newman and Dimitri Tiomkin (not quite reaching the genius of Korngold, Rozsa or Herrmann). The two suites on this disc are good examples of his music, well-played and well-recorded.
BUT be aware that an actor speaks over most of the music, reciting a narrative about themes from each film. The narration was added after Waxman's death and intended for performance. Don't buy the disc unless this is what you want to hear.
My own feeling is that the narrator might have added something to a concert performance, but gets in the way of repeated hearings. The actor takes himself very seriously, and the writing is full of cliches. I wish they'd released the music on its own.
A better introduction to Waxman's film music is "Sunset Boulevard: The Classic Film Music of Franz Waxman" (excerpts conducted by Charles Gerhardt on the RCA label). The best recording I've found of a full Waxman score is "Rebecca" (conducted by Adriano on the Marco Polo label). I think "The Spirit of Saint Louis" is also available in its original mono from the film soundtrack, but I haven't heard it.
The Spirit of St. Louis:Waxman's Music Soars.......2000-07-10
Frans Waxman has written many beautiful film scores but none with more lasting beauty than "The Spirit of St. Louis," film music that portrays probably the most famous flight in history: Charles Lindbergh's non-stop solo fight from New York to Paris in 1927. He was the first man to do it and Waxman captures the raptures and poetry of flight with soaring string music with a lovely French tag in the score to tell the liseners about the ultimate destination of the flight: Paris. Waxman, through flashbacks , writes music about Linbergh's earlier barnstorming days, and flying the mail when air travel was extremely dangerous. Waxman's score blends well with the narrative of the film and I once had the LP of this score but lost it and I am glad to see it out on CD. Waxman did many notable film scores("Rear Window" for Hitchcock an excellent example)and others that rank high among film composers but I feel "The Spirit of St. Louis" is his masterpiece, a score on CD to listen to over and over, be inspired by, thinking back to times when "The Lone Eagle" was flying into lengedary status through his brave flight. here, In San Diego, where the famous plane was built by the Ryan Aviation, at the San Diego Aerospace Museum, there is a replica of Lindbergh's plane and memorabilia. Every time I see the silver beauty of the Spirit, I hear Frans Waxman's wonderfully evocative film score, which lifts one's spirit of adventure and longing to fly in the deep blue skies. Highly recommended.
