Customer Reviews:
A previously unsung great!.......2007-07-02
Ed Reed's singing is truly wonderful and without artifice. The first because it reflects his personality, and the second because it's unnecessary for someone with his life story. At an age when many are in their twilights, Ed's hitting yet another highlight! His performances are transporting, and continue the tradition of the great jazz singers, combining phrasing, melodies and standards in a fine style worthy of audience.
Listen to the wonder that is Ed Reed..........2007-06-13
I fell in love with his music, in a pizza shop (Cheeseboard Pizza!) in Berkeley, California. I didn't know him or his story then, just his voice, and the nights when he was singing were nights of magic I treasured. I have to say immediately that I cannot lay claim to the words that will do his talent justice.
This is an extraordinary debut album for Mr. Reed at age 78, and oh what the world missed all those years before. This is a work that came out of an encounter he had at jazz camp (just a few years ago!) with Peck Allmond, the Brooklyn based multi-instrumentalist, and Bud Spangler, who each heard Ed Reed sing and wanted immediately to hear his CDs. They were stunned to find he had none, and they, along with Ed's wife Diane, decided that had to change.
Ed Reed grew up in Watts and loved to sing always, even sang with Mingus when he was young, but found himself spending many long years in Folsom and San Quentin due to a heroin addiction. He performed in prison with an inmate big band, but he took a long time after the years in prison and addiction to really think of himself as a musician. The songs he learned in prison were learned the hard way - a half hour of jazz allowed a week on the radio - a song heard maybe once every few weeks, words and music laboriously memorized in fragments over periods of months. When he sings those songs though, you can feel the emotion in every moment, and his intonation and phrasing are beautiful.
The music on this album speaks for itself. Be sure to not let his age deceive you, his rich baritone is at its prime. There's a classic ageless elegance here, and you'll hear a version of "A Sleepin Bee" that you won't forget. Thelonious Monk's "Ask Me Now" and "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child" both resonate. Ed is an erudite scholar of jazz with a prodigious memory for details and connections, and the songs on this album reflect this. It is a love story of a man applying his master craft to his art.
In person, Ed Reed combines statements of uncanny wisdom with a joyful wit; he keeps saying that this CD release is "like a dream". Well, if so, I hope none of us awaken anytime soon! Currently he works as a health educator for several agencies in the Bay Area. His personal program is called "The Art of Living Well"; may he keep doing so himself so there will be more recordings to come. His performance schedule in the Bay Area is really heating up so look for him in person near you, and Boston - thank your lucky stars - he's heading your way this Fall. He's a grand gentleman, and his voice is a wonder. You won't feel the same after you hear him; buy this now.

Now that the genetic code of life has been broken, Frank McComb offers a glimpse of how that scientific breakthrough may affect the music world. With the musical DNA from Donny Hathaway's Fender Rhodes piano and Stevie Wonder's mini-Moog synthesizer, McComb's debut comes off as a romantic mutation of those famous musical genes. He's nowhere near the songwriter that they are just yet, but McComb's vocal texture is so eerily similar to those giants that his debut shouldn't qualify for what is being called "neo-soul" music. This is the real '70s thing--à la Hathaway's Extension of a Man period and Wonder's Music of My Mind. McComb obviously relishes his influences, and he benefits from the guiding production hand of his former boss in Buckshot LeFonque, Branford Marsalis. It also helps that he uses one core all-star jazz group throughout the 14-song set, including Marsalis's sax, Cameroonian Richard Bona's bass, and Russell Gunn's trumpet. The synth pieces have more spirit than the piano pieces, or, said another way, he does Stevie better than he does Donny, with "Love Natural" and "Wasting Your Time" among the best of the 12 originals that McComb displays. And he's not completely stuck in the past--"(They're Gonna Be) Looking at You" and "Listen to Your Heart" have trip-hop's drum & bass feel. --Mark Ruffin

Check him out.... 2003 album The Truth and this one.
OMG!.......2007-03-14
Hey! I bought this when it first came out some years back and it NEVER loses it's flavor. Frank is really a talented guy and is timeless in the romantic feel of his music. I have 3 of his recordings and you will not be sorry if you are into mellow music. He reminds me of Donny Hathaway, (an opinion that an ex-boyfriend and I disagreed about) but with a fresh flair! The melodies are unique, yet familiar. His lyrics are mature, but not "old fogey" :) WONDERFUL ARTIST! Check him out!
Grown Folks Music.......2007-03-06
Sounding like a cross between Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder, McComb brings a true breath of fresh air to the music scene with this CD. With a jazzy/R&B feel, this CD is a great mix of uptempo grooves, ballads and a wonderful opening gospel number that is sure to be appreciated by those who have grown tired of what is passing for music these days. Lyrically interesting and different. They're Gonna Be Looking At You, Future Love, and Wasting Your Time are stand-outs.
Glad this CD was recommended to me!.......2007-01-16
WOW!!!! Thanks Frank for dual talent of vocalist/musician. I don't know what makes Sony 'shelf' great talent the way they do. I just glad I found Frank McComb before another 7 years passes by.
THIS IS A MUST !!!.......2006-07-14
This guy needs his props!!!! He reminds me of Will Downing...he's smooth with flavor. I have no idea why I have not heard him on the radio. I just heard the import for the first time and it is just as good.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent intro to Foster and Sousa.......2007-02-25
This is a tremendous value considering the price and the number of tracks that you get. The renditions are not bad, but I have heard better Foster. There is a lot of narration, which makes this a great teaching tool to introduce Foster and Sousa. The narration is a bit more for Foster than Sousa. Some of the Foster songs seem to be cut a little short, giving you what is really more of a sampler than a rich collection of complete Foster songs. The Sousa marches seem to be a little longer and don't have quite as much narration. Even though both men were well known American composers, their type of music was quite different, so it's kind of an odd paring on this album. It's a pleasant listen, but not a "must have" item unless you don't have much Foster or Sousa in your music collection; it's a good starter album. Great for kids who might be interested in learning about these two famous composers.

With the seventh installment of Pavarotti & Friends: For Cambodia and Tibet, the beloved tenor assembles yet another all-star cast of musicians in hopes of helping the children of Cambodia and Tibet. The music of the pop stars--which ranges from the modern rock of the veteran Eurythmics to the dance-pop of Aqua--really steals the show here, with Pavarotti lending his impeccable vocal support. Tracy Chapman performs "Baby Can I Hold You" as a duet with Pavarotti, and Eurythmics team up with him on "There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)." Of course, the tenor's fans will be begging to hear the opera great in his element, and it's no surprise that he shines on Bizet's "Agnus Dei," with international pop star Mónica Naranjo joining in; Eduardo Di Capua's "O Sole Mio," with Savage Garden; or even Luigi Denza's "Funiculi, Funicula," with Aqua and a children's chorus. As globetrotting benefit tributes go, this is a mixed bag, but there's probably something here for everyone. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Excellent video...........2002-10-13
I am a fan of Savage Garden, The Eurythmics, and George Michael - all of them did a great job with and without Pavarotti....
And the man who sang O SOLE MIO - Darren Hayes (formerly of Savage Garden)... has the most beautiful- angelic- sultry and great voices I have ever heard - and to do it in Neapoliaton Italian (dialect) and in my opinion the best duet of ALL of them featured!!!!!
Great songs sung by a diverse group of artists.......2002-02-07
As always, Maestro Pavarotti's Modena concerts are highly entertaining and uplifting.
All artists sang two songs during the concert (one on their own and another with Maestro Pavarotti), but unfortunately not all of the songs are featured on this video. Another shortcoming is that there are no interviews or any extra footage.
It is funny to hear Pavarotti sing a pop tune as it is equally funny to see a pop singer with virtually no voice doing "O Sole Mio", but if it is all in good spirit and for charity, then it is enjoyable.
If you are intersted in European music scene or simply love Pavarotti, this tape will be a great treat for you.
Pavarotti's Best War Child Concert.......2002-01-04
Bravo showed this concert on New Years 2002 and it blew my mind. It is certainly the best of the War Child concerts, which started in 1996 as Pavarotti's effort to help the children of war-torn countries.
Like in the previous concerts, Pavarotti appears with international pop stars in the open-air piazza of his home town, Modena, Italy. (How do I get tickets for that?)
If you haven't heard any of these concerts, also available on CDs, you will be surprised how well Pavarotti's voice--a voice that makes the gods swoon--blends with the likes of Enrique Iglesias, George Michael, Tracy Chapman, and the Eurythmics. Previous concerts included B.B. King, Elton John, Ricky Martin, and Liza Minelli. Sometimes he sings along in English, sometimes in Italian counterpoint. The effect is stupdendous! These concerts display all the beauty of this great operatic voice while at the same time honoring the art of our greatest pop artists.
What makes this video the best is the children's chorus, the combined Ars Canto of Parmi, Italy, and the Children's Choir of Cambodia and Tibet. The video starts with this chorus joining Pavarotti and the totally sexy Enrique Iglesias in a rousing "Cielito Lindo."
Pavarotti really knows entertainment and in this one he pulls out all the stops! Best of all, part of the proceeds of this tape goes to benefit the children of Cambodia and Tibet. Pavarotti's efforts to help War Child have already built music centers for children in Kosovo, Liberia, and Guatemala. What great leadership!
He says on one of his jackets: "All too often, children are betrayed by the inhuman actions of adults, and become the innocent victims of war and cruelty. War Child is an energetic, and practical organization offering vital hope, working tirelessly for children to regain their rightful place in the world."
Very diverse! Loved it!.......2000-12-18
I am a HUGE Savage Garden fan so that was the main reason to buy this album. And I have to say Darren's voice is AWESOME in "O Sole Mio", the first time I listened to it it made me cry. So I bought the cd. I was glad to see that there are very enjoyable songs in the album not only the SG tracks. I loved Tracy Chapman's "Baby Can I Hold You Tonight" performance, now I am a Tracy fan too. You'll enjoy the performances by Aqua, Enrique Iglesias and Eurhytmics and of course the queen Tracy Chapman " ("Telling Stories" is superb!). I even discovered some new artists I had never heard of and I liked them. You won't be disappointed by this album.
A wonderfully enjoyable and diverse collection of music.......2000-11-05
This collection of music has given me great pleasure. Aqua's Around the World is a joy. Hearing the Eurythmics and Pavarotti perform together is fun and beautiful. I also especially liked Enrique Iglesias's Be with you. 20 tracks and 77 minutes of great music I will listen to again and again. And all for a good cause.

Grizzard's "Addicted to Love: Live".......2000-03-16
After listening to this CD, I fondly recall many of Grizzard's stories from his books. His story telling, that he distinctly inherited from his father, truly set the tone for this collection.
As a long time fan, Lewis Grizzard's "Addicted to Love: Live" will delight the first time time listener.
If you are into clean comedy, this CD is for you.

Album Description
This is the fourth album from the band that gave you "Waiting For A Star To Fall" and "Oh Girl." Written and recorded over the past year, THE WONDERGROUND is a story of miracles in a relationship. Shannon and George have divorced. They then proceeded to write their way to a lasting friendship. The songs are about the journey; alternately cathartic, joyous, and reflective. Musically, it's like peering into a personal journal of this time.

Out of the game to long.......2007-02-23
The music and arrangment were decent, nothing to write home about really. But lyrically this album was terrible.
wow. Wow. WOW........2006-04-29
I received this CD from the creators yesterday after only two or three days wait. I admit that I was nervous, given that Reel Life is still in my desert island collection (along with such disparate elements as Love's Forever Changes and Denzil's Pub). This bias worked against the new CD on the first spin---although I found the first few songs catchy, the rest of the CD only made for good background music.
Now, less than 24 hours and 5 spins later, almost all of the tunes stand out. While I don't know if this CD will make my desert island collection (I've changed A LOT since I fell in love with Reel Life), this is still one of the best smart pop CDs I've ever heard. And it only gets better with each listen, hence the title of this review.
I hear echoes of artists as disparate as The Carpenters, Bourgeois Tagg, Throwing Muses, Toy Matinee, Shawn Colvin, and Enya in this album (plus some influences that I cannot pin down), but the songs and lyrics still show that signature (and singular) Boy Meets Girl heart, mind, and soul.
Hopefully I won't have to wait 18 years for the next installment! (My advice to those interested in getting the CD is to order it straight from the artists---Amazon just cannot seem to get the CD in stock. Plus you give the artists a bigger chunk of the profits, and isn't that how it should be?)
(Addendum: After another 5 listens, followed by a return listen to Reel Life, I must say that this album is actually as good as the former release. Who knows how good this CD will sound in 18 years!)
Better Than The Average Adult Contemporary Pop........2004-08-19
After a long hiatus and a divorce, George and Shannon, the songwriting team behind Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody Who Loves Me", have return in fine form. "The Wonderground" is, indeed, about their divorce and their ability to move forward as friends. Thus, the album contains insights into separation, loneliness and loss on an adult scale. The music is lush and welcoming--like visiting with an old friend you haven't seen in a while (heck, technically, we haven't heard from Boy Meets Girl since their 1988 smash "Reel Life"). This is definitely worth buying if you are a Boy Meets Girl fan and, even if you are not, there are plenty of great melodies and lyrics. This is one of the better albums from 2003, and had I not looked them up on a whim I would not have even known about it! As a side note, unfortunatly their first two albums appear to be out of print or very hard to find. I do have their "Reel Life" on cd, and I used to have their debut on cd (but I didn't like it and traded it in). After reading their website, it looks like their third album, which was shelved and never released, may get its due on cd through their site. In the meantime, pick up a copy of "The Wonderground" it's great whether you've been through a divorce lately or not.
Very nice.......2004-04-22
I'm also a long time fan of Boy Meets Girl, and still listen to what I think was their first album (the one that Oh Girl was the first track). I love George's voice.
There's lots of good stuff on this album, and it's very introspective and thoughtful. I think my favorite song, at least right now, is Chronic Pain. Everything on it is very light sounding, but there's a lot going on underneath, their lyrics are always beautiful.
A must for R'N'B fans.......2004-04-14
I used to be a great fan of Boy Meets Girl in the late 80's so it was fantastic to here from them again after such a long time. I must honestly say that I didn't expect much when I bought The Wonderground CD, but I was truly shocked by the quality of the album since I first played it. Their sound is as good as ever. Their music has grown older, it sounds clearer now and the lyrics are deeper and better. For those fans who were fans of their soulful music (those powerful drums + guitars + healing voices) this album will be no deception at all. Among the 11 tracks, I choose "Birds of a feather" for its early 70's feeling and "Second Chance" for being a great free-your-heart song, intimate and strong at the same time (much better that "Is Anybody out there in Love?" from the Reel Life album).
Finally I would encourage every BMG fan to write to them in their website. George and Shannon are the most wonderful people!!They would write you back and let you know their appreciation.

The Audio Equivalent of Prozac.......2004-03-19
"Eleven Love Songs" could not even keep an insomniac awake--this is one sleepy recording. And quite frankly, I felt it was the audio equivalent of Prozac. The level that this music does work on is as background music or a cure for insomnia (if being bored to sleep can be considered a cure), but for up-front listening, there was nothing that made me want to pay attention to the music for very long.
Marquez does get a dark sound, but there's a side of me that wishes she would cut something with a little excitement to it. All of the tracks on this album run at the same slow pace, there is not even a single uptempo tune to act like a mild dose of caffeine amidst the sleepiness.
She seems like a decent vocalist, and I know she does have potential, but the subject matter just makes the whole thing rather empty and uninteresting to me. Some of the previous reviews are so overly enthusiastic one might think that Marquez herself wrote them.
Starkly beautiful Venezuelan music.......2002-02-02
I remembered Maria Marquez's voice from a now out-of-print Ralph Records compilation of folk music (done through an alternative filter), "Potatoes." She has an unusual, arresting sound. But singers can't reach their potential without good songwriting. On Eleven Long Songs Marquez has a lot of good material to work with. While the standout is the touching and ethereal "Mi Alma y Yo," the entire recording creates more than an atmosphere - it's like the soundtrack to a parallel universe. Think of Laura Nyro and you have some idea of the feeling I'm describing. Marquez uses her voice with a restraint and phrasing usually employed only by jazz singers. While the material here isn't as adventurous as the cut done by Marquez with Frank Harris on "Potatoes," it's an unusual, mature, and poetic work of art.
Absolutely Awesome.......2001-03-05
I saw Maria Marquez tonight in San Francisco, she's extraordinary! The best jazz singer I've ever heard in my life. I have seen Nina Simone, Etta James, Camen Mc Rae, Maria Bethania etc. and Maria Marquez is class on her own
My wife gave me her album as a gift and I was hooked. I drove all the way to San Francisco in the rain just to see her!
The balance and fullness between such a few instruments and Maria's extraordinary voice are astonishing. The unorthodox instrumentation is also very unique and refreshing. The use of mandolin, Steel Drums, cuatro and other instruments is rather pioneering and I am sure contemporary Jazz fans like myself tired of the same old ensembles would appreciate it for its innovative and beautiful qualities. Once Cuentos de Amor" is an extrordinary Jazz album. Yes, JAZZ ALBUM. This is a Must buy!! Congratulations to Ryko on their discovery of this great artist!

Cousins, Cattle & Other Love Stories.......2001-02-02
This is what you get when of a couple of very talented musicians get bored. The music is excellent, the lyrics are weird, the jokes are sick--I love it! I didn't know what to think the first time I heard these guys, now I can't stop humming their tunes. They just kind of stick in your mind. I also have their "Live" album, I can't wait for their next one!!! Both of their albums have live and studio recordings. Both albums contain adult language in the live portion of the recording.
