Although Dinah Washington was one of her major influences, Nancy Wilson is more a song stylist than a jazz singer, drawing equally from the blues, R&B, and gospel. This gem from 1964 features Wilson interpreting a number of the era's pop standards, each delivered in less than 3 minutes. Whether frolicking on Antonio Carlos Jobim's beloved bossa nova, the "One Note Samba," the Latin lilt of "On Broadway," or belting the blues on the Ray Charles hits "Unchain my Heart" and "I Can't Stop Loving You," Wilson's clear diction lights up the tunes. Her ballad renditions of Anthony Newley's "What Kind of Fool Am I?" and the Burt Bacharach-Hal David waltz "Wives and Lovers" show why she still reigns as one of music's greatest divas. --Eugene Holley Jr.

I own "A Touch of Today" on vinyl.......2007-01-16
While browsing through an old record store I found an old LP of "A Touch of Today" on sale in perfect condition for $2.95. So what the hell I thought... And you know, that was the best three bucks I've ever spent. Man, oh man, that woman could (and still can)sing baby! What a voice, I mean if you like Nancy Wilson then you will love this album. I don't care if some of the songs are considered sappy 60's elevator fare, this woman's voice just makes any song sound beautiful and fresh. I almost left the room when "Yesterday" came on (I just couldn't take yet another tired version of this depressing song) and I am so glad that I didn't cause she just nails it like no one I have ever heard before. I actually had to listen to it again cause I was so in awe the first time I couldn't really enjoy it. However, the whole album is like this. Hell, I would have paid ten dollars for this LP just to listen to "You're Gonna Hear From Me". So go out and buy this CD (like I am so I can listen to it in my car)and I can assure you, you will be happy you did.
A Different Nancy..........2007-01-10
on this double cd we find nancy in a more secular setting, seems like she was getting out of the mold of being just a jazz singer. she branched out on this one, singing the popular song uptight by stevie wonder, she did a nice job, and some more i dont know but i liked them too... listen to the samples...
Nice blend of sixties songs and old standards.......2004-04-27
The two albums paired in this twofer are well matched, each containing many covers of sixties pop songs and a few older songs.
Among the sixties songs are covers of Go away little boy (gender adaptation of Goffin and King's Go away little girl - an American hit for the Happenings but a British hit for Mark Wynter), Unchain my heart (Ray Charles), Wives and lovers (a Bacharach-David classic), I can't stop loving you (originally a country song, but Nancy almost certainly recorded it after hearing Ray Charles sing it - he had a number one pop hit with it on both sides of the Atlantic), On Broadway (Drifters), Our day will come (Ruby and the Romantics), You've got your troubles (Fortunes), And I love him (gender adaptation of And I love her - Beatles), Uptight (Stevie Wonder), Call me (originally recorded by Petula Clark but an American hit for Chris Montez) and Yesterday (Beatles) and Going out of my head (Little Anthony and the Imperials).
Among the other songs, Tony Bennett has recorded at least three of them (I left my heart in San Francisco, The good life, Shadow of your smile), though some of the others are obscure - however, they are all excellent and well suited to Nancy.
Nancy was one of the best jazz-pop singers of her generation and this twofer proves it.
An EMI Twofer, the English Way.......2000-07-10
UK's EMI/Capitol offers good service to the customers. This is a 2-on-1 CD pack with 2 original albums on 1 CD. So it's not a compilation. I'd not personally choose these two albums from Ms.Wilson's best times. Here you'll just find her covering pop songs from the 70s with good arrangements.
Superb..Nancy at her eclectic best.......2000-01-04
From Jobim's "One Note Samba" to The Beatles' "And I Love Him(Her)", Nancy Wilson shows her range and versatility in this double cd set from the 60s. Add some wonderful jazz arrangements and some classic songs from the era and you get quite a delightful package.
This is the best of Nancy Wilson, before she took a turn in the 80s and 90s towards more mainstream, subdued pop-lite.
A wonderful CD set that contains many hard to find 60s performances from this Great Lady.

Elvis Presley changed the world when he spontaneously kicked an obscure blues number called "That's All Right" into high gear, providing as likely a starting point for rock & roll as anyone will ever be able to pinpoint. Spontaneity became harder to come by as Presley's career progressed, which makes this four-disc assortment of outtakes, alternate takes, and live recordings such a treat. Dating from the 1954 date that produced "That's All Right" to February '76 Graceland sessions, Today, Tomorrow & Forever captures every phase in Elvis's career--frequently from lesser-explored vantage points. Here's the super-charged hep cat of the '50s charging through versions of "Heartbreak Hotel," "I Got a Woman," and "Hound Dog" before a rollicking Little Rock, Arkansas, audience. Here's the matinee idol trying to breathe life into increasingly moribund material. Finally, here's the comeback kid of the late '60s and the flailing Vegas attraction of the '70s. Indeed, late-period Presley benefits particularly well when it's stripped down to its alternate-take essence. Colin Escott's rewardingly frank liner notes ("Elvis had good reason to sleepwalk through 'The Love Machine,'" he notes of one mid-'60s soundtrack throwaway) and a generous assortment of vintage photos complete a package that will certainly appeal to aficionados and will win over more than its share of non-devotees. --Steven Stolder

Customer Reviews:
A worthwhile collection.......2007-02-19
This is certainly an interesting and entertaining collection for avid Elvis fans. It spans his entire career and includes previously unreleased alternate takes and live performances. My favorite disk is the first one, which focuses on his early career. The live radio performance from 1956 is like going back in time and the sound quality is better than many of his other performances from the period. I also really like the alternate take of "I Beg of You" which is more of a rocker than the hit single version. "Treat Me Nice" is also very good. The highlight of the second disk is Elvis' duet with Ann Margret, the title track "Today, Tomorrow, and Forever." Why this version wasn't released back in the 60's I don't know. I really enjoyed "Runaway" and "My Babe" from the third CD. "Promised Land" on the last CD is interesting; the guitar really rocks but since it was only the second take, Elvis is still just walking through the lyrics.
All-in-all while this is overkill for the average fan, it is certainly a worthwhile set for avid Elvis fans.
Today, Tomorrow and Forever is Elvis.......2007-02-12
He (Elvis) never ceases to amaze me... adding to his music in this 4-disc set are the insights and photos in the accompanying booklet .... this collection priceless!
Not Just Another Repackage.......2003-10-20
Why? was my reaction when first seeing the advance notice for "Today, Tomorrow and Forever." Why was BMG giving Elvis fans yet another redundant compilation of repackaged hits, misses, and assorted outtakes? I immediately dismissed the box set. Fortunately for me, though, my thoughtful wife ignored my pessimism and the four disk collection ended up in my Christmas stocking. I was pleasently surprised! Yes, the set contains more than a few repackaged hits, a couple of misses - most notably, the movie tunes "Mexico," "My Desert Serenade" and an insiped cover of the Anne Murray hit "Snowbird" - and a whole slew of alternate take recordings, but the entire 100 song repertoire plays out like a fresh introspective of the King's entire career. TTF offers up an exciting collection of alternate studio cuts, movie tracks, and live performances; most of which appear for the first time in the presented format. CD #1 feautures a raucous seven song set from one of Elvis's early 1956 concerts. The disk also contains several great alternate cuts, highlighted by "Rip it Up," "Doncha' Think It's Time," and "Got a Lot O' Livin' to Do." CDs 3 and 4 focus on late 1960s and 1970s output. The disks present a couple of great live recordings that are not the usual fare...of the bunch, "Baby What You Want Me to Do," "What'd I Say," and "Walk a Mile in My Shoes" are the best offerings. The studio tracks are also noteworthy. "Long Legged Girl" - heretofore dismissed because it was released on the "Double Trouble" soundtrack - emerges as a rollicking throw back reminiscent of early Elvis. Ditto with the 1967 release "Big Boss Man" and 1968's "Guitar Man"; the latter featuring a smouldering version of "Trouble" as an intro. Movie tunes "The Love Machine" and "Let Us Pray" are infectious sing-alongs and the 1969 studio track "True Love Travels on a Gravel Road" begs the question why was it never released as a single? "U.S. Male," is one of the few misses...I was nine years old when the song was released in 1968 and it's tough-guy lyrics quickly became my mantra...now, however, hearing Elvis utter the phrase "I catch you 'round my woman champ, I'll leave your head like the shape of a stamp" is embarrassingly hokey. CD #2 is the most rewarding disk of the entire collection. It features four wonderful Don Robertson ballads that highlight Elvis's subtly powerful vocals..."Anything That's Part of You" is the best of the foursome. The up tempo "Witchcraft," is such a strong performer I was left wondering how it ever ended up the B-Side of "Bossa Nove Baby." Disk #2 also offers up the box set's title track "Today, Tomorrow and Forever" - a great duet with Ann-Margaret from the movie "Viva Las Vegas"...another song in the "why wasn't it released as a single" catagory. Lastly, "TTF" features the most thorough and candid assortment of liner notes I have ever read...interesting, honest, and insightful. I highly recommend this box set...it is a masterful collection of music offering something for eveyone.
There is never enough.......2003-07-18
Come on, it's Elvis. Enough said. If you are looking at this review or the CD set, then you must love Elvis' music. Any Elvis collection is worth buying. The music is awesome and the booklet is informative in describing the sessions. Keep the memory alive!
The greatest from the greatest.......2003-05-14
This one has it all some of the best songs from the greatest entertainer the world will ever know.
And for those fans of his music from the 70's like myself then this
is a must.
Disk #4 alone is worth the [money]that it cost the songs that really
stand out are track #4 "the next step is love" track#5"life"
track#9 "fools rush in" track #12 "where do I go from here"
track#15 "I miss you" track#17 if you talk in your sleep" and
by far one of the best songs elvis ever recorded track#20
"pieces of my life.
Take it from a true []elvis fan this set is a must have for
the real elvis fans.

A must for lovers of Nancy.......2003-12-31
Another album filled with perfect definitive versions of classic songs. If you're a fan of Nancy, you cannot do wrong with this album!
Another Wilson Classic, But Please Lengthen the Time...........2001-04-07
My only disappointment with this CD is the short length---it doesn't even hit the 30 minute mark, only 28 plus. I was initially shocked how short the length was, or even Capitol's reluctance to throw in a few extra "bonus" tracks. All quibbles aside, the quality of this CD makes up for the brevity of time. Perhaps Capitol and Co. were operating under the idea "quality not quantity" is more. Out of the dozen tracks here, only the covers of Ray Charles "I Can't Stop Lovin' You" and "On Broadway" sound a bit long in the tooth. Her other covers such as Tony Bennett's "Left My Heart in San Francisco" and "Our Day Will Come" hold up quite well. But my personal fave is the knockout performance of "Go Away Little Boy"---WOW!! Nancy's yearning and longing come thru loud and clear. You can hear the ache in her voice and the conflicting emotions she's feeling. Anyone who's been thru an ill-fated affair can surely identify with her take of this song. I always hit the "repeat" button when this song comes on. But the entire CD is worth getting. The four stars I'm giving is just a wish for more tracks next time.
Today, Tomorrow , Forever.......2001-02-13
The remixing could have done a better job of letting Nancy's voice be the most important part of the music. The base is particularly dominant in several pieces and it sounds like Nancy is almost backup to the instruments. There is a flatness to the music, too. This may be all the mixer had to work with, but Nancy's voice is certainly not "out front." the 3 star rating is more for the mixing than her voice or the songs.
One of Many Outstanding Albums Nancy Made in the Sixties.......2000-10-24
I didn't know so much could be made out of "Call Me Irresponsible" and "Our Day Will Come". Wow, is she ever a great singer! Those songs don't give a singer much to work with. She nails "Go Away Little Boy", "The Good Life", "Wives and Lovers" and "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" even better than you can imagine her doing them. Her accompaniment is all small group, with particularly wonderful piano playing by Lou Levy.
