write a long review about this band, becuase what I want to say is simple. This is my first listen to this group, and I just want to say this is EXTREMELY enjoyable rock. Lots of styles here, lots of views. This was a very talented band.

The guitar work and musical content here is exquisite. Its easy to forget they were a 70's band.

This is headphone music. I give it my strongest recommondation for purchase.

Malcolm Morley had obviously overdosed on Buffalo Springfield and early Neil Young when he wrote the material for Help Yourself's debut. Of the nine first tracks, which comprise this eponymous album, "Your Eyes Are Looking Down" in particular sounds like a Young cover, and the following four tracks should also please any BS/NY fan. The best moments, however, come when the band really display their originality. "To Katherine They Fell" is a quiet mood piece flavored by Morley's guitar echoing in the background and Ken Whaley's bass adding sounding board to Dave Charles' free-form drumming. "Deborah" is the other highpoint, a sad, simple piano ballad where Morley really sounds heartfelt. The more forceful "Running Down Deep" and the drowsy closer "Street Songs" are also worth mentioning. This debut, while not a great album, still pleases and serves well as a harmless introduction to Help Yourself.

"Beware the Shadow", the band's third album, shows the originality in full bloom. "Alabama Lady" was the first HY song I ever heard, and it's still a favorite, an easy-to-get-into and easy-to-like cheerful song wonderfully played. "Reaffirmation" is the album's centerpiece. Flute and guitar drift out from nowhere, Morley utters a series of short lines, once interrupted by an instrumental part where drums also join in. After three minutes Morley stops singing, the tempo picks up and the band starts drifting off into a musical stratosphere. The tone shifts to a funky rhythm laced with multi-layered guitars, and soon the whole band starts chanting "reaffirmation" for about a minute, and the rest is dedicated purely to an instrumental extravaganza that soothes and amazes you, and you feel pleasantly exhausted when the whole thing finally is wrapped up at 12:35. "Calapso" is a small section of an obvious studio jam, but at 1:11 it's criminally short, you hardly even manage to pick up the catchy calypso beat. We want three minutes!

"She's My Girl" is possibly the HY song that's closest to my heart. What might sound like an innocent love song is actually a very sad song, Morley possibly singing about a loved one who has left him, or whom he has mistakenly hurt in some way. This should have been a single - why wasn't it? The humorous and deliberately messed-up "Molly Bake Bean" sounds like a fireside chant late one night after a few too many beers, but the background noises sound like coming from a kitchen or a small workshop during lunch hour. A guy named Sean Tyla co-wrote the bitter "American Mother", which appeared on Tyla Gang's 1978 "Moonproof" album as a growling three-minute hard-rocker. Help Yourself's version is a spacey, pompous, impressive seven-minute symphony where Morley shouts out the lyrics with a clear, crisp voice. "Passing Through" closes this album non-distinctively with simple acoustic guitar backing and nothing more. No matter, the listener has already got his stomach full and could hardly take any more.

Morley might have suffered from depression at the time of "Beware the Shadow", but it produced the best HY album ever!

Everyone who remembers this band admired the unique musical style which might be compared to an English equivalent of Workingman's/American Beauty period Grateful Dead. (The other 2 lp's are now available too - also superb). A real bonus are the Liner notes detailing the band's history.

I love these guys. This is one of the many under appreciated bands of the early 70's. All their songs are great, and alot of them should have been hits. The radio is missing out by not playing these guys. I beleive this is some of the best mellow rock you will ever hear. And some of their songs are pretty hard rocking too. I think the song She's my Girl is one of the best mellow kind of rock song in the world. I don't beleive there is anything better. Anybody that got to see these guys live is very lucky, I beleive. All the old bands should be playing live today, and they should all be played on the radio. That's the way it should be. I recommend this to anybody that likes good classic rock.

A British early 70's rock group with a cult following then and now. The Helps became known to a wider audience when they became connected to Welsh psychedelic rockers, the Man band. They joined them on a tour of Switzerland in 1971, called 'All good clean fun.' But whereas Man were often rambling and improvisational the Helps pinned their music to plaintive, almost country rock harmonies. They, too used a dual guitar approach to melody and their first eponymously titled album relies on wistful picking and tight rhythms. Malcolm Morley wrote and and sang many of the songs and played guitars and keyboards, while Richard Treece pulled out some exceptional lead solos. Their duelling is delicate and intricate but never self-indulgent. Ken Whaley's bass lines dance lithely, (Ken's replaced by Paul Burton on their 3rd album, Beware the Shadow,) and Dave Charles keeps a tight beat going on drums. Like Man's (and on Dire Straits' "Alchemy")Terry Williams, Charles' subtle tempo shifts and climactic runs help announce pace shifts. The 1st album's outstanding track, "Old Man" - not Neil Young's classic-stands comparison with its well-known namesake. The 3rd album,"Beware the Shadow", which shares space on this great value CD, allegedly reflects Morley's period of melancholia and depression. The songs don't! Here's a broad sweeping canvas: "Reaffirmation" conjures up broad vistas and adds mellotron to the other keyboards and guitars. Starting with an ironic vocal line and soft piano and guitar accompaniment, this track soars into a warm ethereal guitar-filled golden Western sky. "American woman" is another stand-out track : a sardonic Morley opus about the ubiquitous American mom, going way further in her debauches than Mrs Robinson! If you like the country rock of the Burritos, Poco, New Riders, CSNY or just any good (but not heavy) guitar music then go ahead and, "Help yourself!"

Every song on this album has it's own perspective and "Bill" is not the only one here that is unexpected but all-too-believable. "Slow Drag" is one of my all-time favorite hot dance numbers for three years now. Great music on the love/lust songs ("Burning," "I Don't Want to Steal It," etc.) and great lyrics too on the more atypical numbers about what happens when you're past all that ("You, Her, and His," "Help Yourself," "Cleaning House," etc.).
Anyone who loves this album should give a listen to Jimmy Lewis' album "Soulgasm" where Peggy and he do a fantastic duet, "See You Next Weekend."
If I could only have two soul albums from the modern era, I would choose these two.

This is a dramatic album of deep soul songs. This is most evident on the scandalous hit single "Bill" which clearly tells a story of the man she loves that has a young secret lover which turns out to be another man. The remainder of the album is just as good. She has great vocals thoughout the cd.This is a real keeper that proves soul music is still alive and well.

If you are reading this, the likelihood that you own, say, Strange Affair on vinyl or one of the 2 cds of their first 4 albums is high; i.e. you already know this early 70's English band and its sad history. In any case this is a wonderful gift from another time: strange and haunting electric eclectic with an acoustic feel but also very contemporary in a psychedelic altcountry kind of way (before altcountry was a genre). This c.d was their swan song begun but never completed--- that is, until the original group (plus Kevin Spacey on drums for some tracks) got together to finish it up in '02/'03. In my opinion it's every bit as good as whichever is your former favorite Help Yourself album. If you don't know the early stuff, well, this would be a fine place to start. The cover, too, is an original Rick Griffin (of Bill Graham fame) painting.

By making this purchase, I have finally completed my collection of Julian Lennon albums. Except, of course, for his new album that is due to be released sometime this year. ;)

After only listening to "Help Yourself" the first time through, I have already come to love this CD just as much as I do his previous ones and "Photograph Smile". With "Mr. Jordan" Julian was trying to find himself musically and vocally; but on "Help Yourself", he's trying to find himself more personally. As you listen to it, it takes you on his personal journey of self-discovery. Musically he also has matured even more from "Mr. Jordan" and seems to have finally found his niche with "Help Yourself".

I love all the songs on this album! Even the very odd "New Physics Rant" has a charm to it that makes it a fun song to listen to. The Girl Scouts troop singing backup is so cute. :)

Although, I guess if I had to choose my most favorite songs from this album, they would be: Saltwater, Get A Life, Would You, Maybe I Was Wrong, Help Yourself, Listen, Other Side Of Town, Take Me Home, Imaginary Lines & Keep the People Working. I told you I love them all. I think I mentioned almost all of them. :)

As with "Mr. Jordan", it is a real shame that Atlantic Records didn't promote this better. I keep asking myself..."What were these people thinking?!" If it had been promoted better, I think it would have done very well. Shame on them. :/

So if you love Julian's music, you will definitely love this album just as much as his others. It's a definite, must have, for any Julian fan. :)

I really like this one from Julian, though I dont think its his best. Some really nice songs on here. Saltwater got a lot of airplay, and Take Me Home is one I couldnt stop playing. Beautifully done. Also Listen is a great tune. Its a shame Julian lost interest in music after this release, we would have to wait 7 years for another album.

I don't use the word fan, but I do own all of his albums. This is my favorite. The romantic journey found in "Take me home" is so touching it became "our song" in a relationship which has become an 8 year marriage. "Salt Water" a song I sat alone in the mountains listening to in the dark when I needed to think.

This album really is his best to date in my opinion. It is a blend of lilting optomism, and joy. Just plain well written, performed- lovely!

This is the definitive Julian Lennon album. It fulfills the promise of the Lennon legacy with supreme confidence, ability and charm. It is a far-reaching album that collects all the varied styles and influences at play on previous discs and delivers them in a distinctive package that is singularly Julian. It's a complex work of breathtaking sweep that even his father never really achieved, taking on a number of subjects both social and personal. The arrangements and production are as intricate as anything on "Photograph Smile" without the addition of saccharine. In its day, the advent of Q Sound made this album swell from the speakers and fill the room with song. Considering how successful "Mr. Jordan" was, it's a shame this didn't find a bigger audience.

BTW, am I not the only one who thinks it's an uncredited George Harrison playing the guitar solo on "Saltwater"?

Still in the player after 2 months says i liked it. I am a Julian fan from the Valotte single and have been intrigued by his writing style.... I was rekindled to his musical heritage (guess?) from friends who then rekindled sooo many memories and then influences upon me. Then I saw this man in the "saltwater" video and heard and knew what i had been missing since "Valotte"..it was JULIAN!

Being interested in the British pub rock scene, and happily familiar with one Help Yourself song called "Alabama Lady" (not in this 2-cd package) I bought this set expecting a very good listening experience. To make the story short, I was let down at first. The music didn't welcome me with open arms, some songs were very wonderful indeed but some were just dull and distant. I listened to the cd's over and over again and found "Happy Days" a very good set of songs, light and irresistibly catchy, but "Ken Whaley" and "Strange Affair" were uneven. I started skipping the 12-minute experimental "It Has to Be", since it made my task of getting into the music even more difficult. One by one, all the songs started playing in my head, refusing to stop, and I realised I finally liked them all.

I recently found the other double-album set by Help Yourself, and listened to all 3 cd's in one go. I still hated "It Has to Be", so it's still a track I intend to skip. I'm still working on the albums "Help Yourself" and "Beware the Shadow", but this 2-cd set now has one more proud owner - me.

My favorites on "Strange Affair" are the bouncy title track, the haunting CS&N/America-type ballad "Brown Lady", and the melancholy "Deanna Call and Scotty" - and the nine-and-a-half-minute instumental "The All Electric Fur Trapper" is so ethereal in places you can't help but get enchanted by it.

On "The Return...", the best songs are the immediately catchy "Who Killed Paradise?", the ballad "Amy", which sounds like Barnstorm-period Joe Walsh, and the closing ballad "The Golden Handshake", which is so haunting you expect it to develop more during its 6-minute running time than it actually does. And "Happy Days" is wonderful from start to finish!

So, buy this set, and don't worry if you don't get turned on at first. You will!

As is the case with the twofer containing Beware of the Shadow and their first album, you get a lot of excellent music on one disc. Musically reminiscent of a blend of the acoustic parts of Led Zep's third album and the Grateful Dead style on American Beauty and Workingman's Dead. Strange Affair is one of the greatest recordings of the early 70's. Unfortunately few heard the band or the lp. This album was played quite bit on the great old FM100 in Memphis which at the time was still "underground". The rest of the cd (Return of Ken Whaley lp plus the Happy Days ep) is good but it's the Strange Affair album that's stayed with me for over 30 years. I would go so far as to say the the instrumental called "The All Electric Fur Trapper" ranks up there with Pink Floyd's "Great Gig in the Sky" for best rock instrumental of all time. Help Yourself was a Welsh band that played in the early seventies. It wasn't a very stable band, and had members move in and out. Some of the members also played in Man. They released 4 albums. This is a two CD set that contains the second (Strange Affair) and fourth (Return of Ken Whaley/Happy Days) albums. The fourth album was released as a double LP, but fits on the second CD. The CD has a nice booklet that includes a barely coherent history of the band.

Every Help Yourself album contained one fantastic extended number, a few good songs, and some bad ones. The extended numbers are from 10 to 14 minutes and include some amazing guitar playing and sometimes great keyboards. This two CD set has two of those tracks, plus one seven minute one that comes fairly close. The rest of the tracks are pop tunes in various styles. Some sound like America (but better musically), CSN (including Steven Stills guitar), England Dan and John Ford Coley and Harry Nilsson. There are other styles that are hard to describe. Some are good and some aren't. Few of these would be worth buying on their own.

But, for a good price, you get 2 CD's and close to 30 minutes of excellent music with another 80 minutes of variable quality.

    I cannot tell you how happy i am to have this on CD. I remember all of these songs playing very loudly from my older sister bedroom in the 70's. This is a GREAT collection to have! The song, "If I promise" makes me want to salsa dance all over the house; while "If You GO Away" can bring me too instant tears. I cant forget one of my very favorite's, "Help Yourself". A MUST have to any Tom Jones collection!!!

    Listening to my parents LP all those years ago, I searched high and low for this album. What price for wonderful memories? I remember these songs so fondly, their a trip back in time. Wonderful, and some bonus tracks to boot.

    This 1968 album, available now on CD, stands as one of the most popular releases in the Tom Jones catalogue. From the bouncy, salsa feel of the hit single title track, to the heart wrenching sadness of the classic "If You Go Away", Jones is at his romantic best on an album that steers towards mainstream pop and away from the rock and roll or country influenced sounds of his previous recordings. This album is a must for any TJ fan, one of the biggest sellers of his career (his first Top 10 album in the States), especially if romantic pop is what you are looking for. The CD has a few bonus tracks not originally available on the LP such as "Looking Out My Window", a rare, self penned rocker built to showcase Jones powerhouse emotive vocal style. Two hit singles from the 1970's, "Without Love (There Is Nothing)" and "Can't Stop Loving You" are also included.

    I first heard this album when it was initially released in the late 1960s. We were living in Venezuela, South America, along with other American oil refinery workers. It was a warm, tropical, fun place and I was just beginning to notice the opposite sex. My mother used to play Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck on the stereo and I believe these two guys had a strong infuence on my view of romantic love. This album by Tom is one of his best! Every song is powerful and memorable with a wide range of emotions from one song to the next. "Help Yourself" is carefree and flirting, while "So Afraid" is somber and doubting. In the cocky, but sincere "If I Promise", Tom vows, "to be a good boy, and never hurt you anymore". His voice soars into the sky on "Set Me Free", and then sinks to the depths of despair on "If You Go Away". On "I Can't Break the News...", Tom lets his vocal power loose a bit, but then reels it back in on the quiet and reflective "This House". My musical taste has ranged widely over the years, but Tom is still one of my favorites. Tom is the Bomb.

      Listening to this CD about once a week -- I can't say that all my problems are gone!! It is, however, a wonderfully relaxing cd that's a great one to fall asleep to. The music has a distinct but not overpowering melody, so it's not the "New Age Noise" of some sleep cds. Occasional sounds such as trains, distant laughter, and children playing are interspersed throughout the music. So ignore the mumbo-jumbo of the description, and if you're looking for a good sleep cd, buy this one.
