Bob James--keyboardist, composer, producer, and coleader of the supergroup Fourplay--always manages to find the right mix of up-to-date grooves, jazz sophistication, and lyrical arrangements. This CD, with pianist Keiko Matsui; guitarists Carter Burwell, Chuck Loeb, and Paul Jackson Jr.; vocalist and daughter Hilary; trumpeter Rick Braun; and saxophonist Dave Koz, is no exception. On "Street Smart," DJ Rob Swift adds his turntable-scratching to the eastern-sounding dance mix, while "Just One Thing" sashays to a finger-popping reggae beat. James and company catch a Latin and go-go groove on "Hands On," which is contrasted by the gospel-flavored "Over and Over." The band visits the blues on the cyber-slinky "Baby Cakes," and "Count on It" is a straight-ahead shout-out to Count Basie. This gift for making the contemporary sound classic (and vice-versa) is just what we would expect from the man who gave us the theme song to Taxi. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Well-recorded, jolly music.......2006-06-19
Yet another Naxos jem. This collection of famous operetta overtures by Austrian composer Franz von Suppe is not only an exceptional value, but the music included is just plain fun.
While his complete operettas are rarely performed, much of the music Suppe wrote for them has become famous, in particular LIGHT CAVALRY (which we've all heard in countless cartoons) and POET AND PEASANT. Suppe's overtures brim with good humor and infectiously catchy tunes; I would challenge anyone not to be uplifted by this recording.
The over-all technical qualities of this album are excellent. Not only does the (very talented) Slovak State Philharmonic play with enthusiasm, but audiophiles will appreciate the roudy brashness of the sound.
excellent value.......2000-05-29
This is an excellent value [...]. The Slovak Philharmonic is quite good. Recording quality is very good. Many of these Suppe' pieces are hard to find. It you like the composer, you will like this recording. Suppe' wrote many operettas and Slovak Philharmonic has recorded several volumes of the Suppe' overtures. I plan to purchase more in the series.

Fantastic.......2006-06-30
First of all anything with Sir Solti's name on is worth purchasing. Solti has such a way with interpreting music! If you like overtures this CD is for you. It has the best overtures here in one collection. With orchestras like chicago, london, and the vienna you cannot argue with the performances. There are a few "weaker" ensembles, but when compared with the other ensembles there are few that will not sound weak. Again any work Solti has done is worth purchasing!
Famous Overtures.......2005-08-16
Did not like the way these musical pieces were "interpretted".
Did not like the tempo and in one piece one of the instruments played a portion which I would say they played a flat instead of a natural note. This is based on hearing the same pieces played by someone else, it's just my opinion.
Spectacular.......2003-09-25
Not only does it include some of the most famous overtures, but they are played in such an exciting style, full of life and passion. The Suppe overtures are superior and the Wagner overtures are wonderful as well. There is not a bad point to this recording - highly recommended!
Excellent.......2002-06-11
This is an excellent collection of overtures, especially of Von Suppe's overtures. Solti truly brings out life in these pieces.
The best Overture Album !.......2000-02-28
If you like overtures, here is the album. Never have these been performed so musically and with such excitement. The orchestras involved vary in their abilities, yet the Chicago, Vienna, and London Symphony perfom with style. Solti loves this music and it shows.

Customer Reviews:
A fabulous vintage recording; this is among the best.......2006-12-06
From beginning to end, this is an excellent disc, perhaps the best of its kind. The 1959 recording is amazing; Mercury has done wonders with the sound. I bought this recording despite the fact that I own all but four of the overtures (Boccaccio & the Auber), and have not regretted it a bit. I had bought Mehta's recording previously, but Paray wins in most every regard. The former seems lackluster when compared to Paray, especially when it comes to The Beautiful Galatea. Pique Dame is also quite a bit more energetic in Paray's version.
As for the others, Light Cavalry is joyously executed, Poet and Peasant the same. Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna is neglected far more than it should be. The same goes for Boccaccio: this is one of the two recordings of it available. This is the starting place in this repertoire.
And all this does not even touch on the Auber overtures! Auber's overtures sound almost a cross between Rossini & Suppe at times; yet they are very individual. Curiously, The Bronze Horse is an overture to an oriental opera. Auber does not treat it as such, that is for sure. Fra Diavolo begins with a bit of percussion, then leads into its first piquant melody. Masaniello is a bit more familiar; Johann Strauss's Op. 34 is entitled "Schwarttsche Ball-Tanze," Cotillons on themes from "La muette de Portici" (this is the other name for Masaniello). Give them a listen, all three are fabulous. It is surprising these concert pieces are not more well known.
Overall, this disc is a must for the lover of the overture, or any such music. Paray and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra do the music full justice, as Mercury do to the players. Enjoy.
Paul Paray/Detroit To The Finish Line..............2005-09-29
If Paul Paray was a race horse, I'd place my bet on him each time to win...and indeed I would. This former conductor of the Detroit Symphony has the "Midas Touch", for everything he touches turns to gold. This CD of Suppe and Auber Overtures is no exception, and belongs in everyone's musical library. No matter how many other recordings of these warhorse pieces you own...these renditions are essential. Consistently, each Paray/Detroit recording is a gala event. The overtures contained on this CD are all very familiar to me, and yet it's as though I'm hearing them through a different set of ears. Conductor Paray brings out orchestral nuances like few other conductors can. Each well-known overture is played with energy, finesse, impeccable interpretation, and with extraordinary sound, which is a Mercury Living Presence trademark. Do yourself a favor, anything that Paul Paray and the Detroit Symphony have recorded...BUY!!! I have not lost a race yet. Very Highly recommended.
Paul Paray Brings Rare Overtures To Life.......2005-08-15
This recording, digitally remastered from the old 50's or 60's LP, is more than anything a joyous discovery of rare overtures conducted by an excellent and much admired conductor, the Canadian-born Paul Paray. Paray shaped the Detroit Symphony and since his death in 1979, a conductor of his magnificence has yet to be found for that particular orchestra. Though Paray's home was Montreal, Canada, and he conducted the Montreal forces in his younger days, he became a big name in American conducting. He found a home with the Detroit Symphony and even recorded several fine works of classical music on LP. Many of these- Scheherazade, French Orchestral Music, Carmen Suites and others are on CD and available on Amazon.com.
In this recording, Paray treats us to finely executed overtures by the operetta composer Franz Von Suppe. Suppe was not a big star in his day. His operettas were early Viennese operettas before the more famous Johann Strauss ever staged Die Fledermaus and the dozens of other operettas that followed. Suppe was an Austrian man but very French in his attitude (hence the last name Suppe)and even had French opera-bouffes in his musical styling. Like Offenbach, his operettas were charming, engaging works of fantasy. Consider "The Beautiful Galatea" which is the first track. The Overture is ebullient and energetic, describing the magical forces behind the story which is basically the ancient Greek myth that inspired Pygmalion- an aged inventor who builds the perfect woman. Consider also his "Boccaccio" based on the late Renaissance collection of mildly erotic poetry which read more like the Italian version of the English Canterbury Tales. Boccaccio is amusing, with music expressing adventure and romantic entanglements. The Light Cavalry Overture is actually quite familiar to the trained ear. Its militaristic theme has been used haphazardly in cartoons when a cavalry on horse would appear. His Pique Dame (Queen of Spades) is not the same subject matter as Tchaikovsky's later opera which is far darker opera. Suppe's is charming comedy about a gambling salon. The Poet and the Peasant Overture is festive and brilliantly played, in fact, the best I've heard. Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna foreshadows Strauss waltzes. The album concludes with overtures from an even lesser known composer Daniel-Francois-Esprit Auber. Auber was a French composer who wrote early opera-buffes, though most assuredly he was eclipsed by Offenbach and Halevy. His Fra Diavolo and Masaniello Overtures are effectively engaging with their colorful phrasing.
Paul Paray brings life to these overtures, making them appear as if they are not old or obscure at all. He has genuine chemistry with all the musicians in the orchestra and the music is bright, energetic and even a pleasure to hear because it would appear it was a pleasure for Paray and the Detroit forces to make this recording.
Pure, Unrestrained JOY..........2003-02-27
I bought this CD beause I'm working on collecting the Mercury Catalog, and when I bought it, I paid no attention to what the actual pieces were because I had no idea who Suppe was or what his overtures were.
I can't tell you how happy I was when I was surprised upon first listening... Not only is this music the type of music that is inherent to people from its use in background music to cartoons, TV, movies, etc... but it is so very enjoyable because it exhudes an amazing, unadulterated amount of PURE JOY and EXCITEMENT... with no attempt at being high-brow, or overly serious music.
The good news is that even though this music might be considered to be more "common" among classical elitists, Paul Paray treated it as he would any great art. This recording gives you such beautifully refined sound, such truly INCREDIBLE energy and exhuberence, all with stunning precision and control- that you will be sold upon first hearing.
As other reviews mention- there is no need to look at other recordings of these works, because you will mosy likely get a cheap "pops" orchestra recording that treats the music cheaply beacause of its unabashed "happiness" and accesibility. The result is fun, but trite and gets old fast. With this Paray, the energy seems to remain fresh every time you play it. You can't go wrong with this orchestral uplifter to cleanse your palate between your serious Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, and Mahler symphonies.
So, elitsts... forget your pride and buy these CDs. Fun is not a crime. And, beginners, this is a GREAT way to find how truly fun and emotive classical music can be. Enjoy it.
Nice CD.......2002-08-13
In high school, I played Suppe's "Light Cavalry". So I wanted to get a copy for years but just hadn't bothered. This music recorded on this CD is good quallity (sometimes classical music CD's aren't as good a quality) and the music is very enjoyable. Lovers of classical music or Suppe will enjoy this CD. It is a worthy addition to any music collection.

Good film music should be seen and not heard--that is, it's usually there for background, to reinforce what you're seeing, not to draw attention to itself. So why listen to it? Often that's a mystery, but the items in this collection seem to have been selected because they are interesting music (Prokofiev, Copland, Bernstein) or because they are so familiar that they bring back memories of favorite movies (Laura, High Noon, Star Wars). Like much movie music, a lot of these items are sentimental and overblown, even the more famous ones. (Those famous screaming strings in Psycho can sound silly without the onscreen action.) But if you want one movie-music CD in your collection, this may be the one to have. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Worth it for "Conquest" alone.......2005-09-12
The stirring martial music from the movie "Captain from Castille" ("Conquest") is on this album and so far as I know it's the only CD you'll find it on. But other tracks are great also, including the "Parade of the Charioteers" from "Ben Hur," the theme from "The Magnificent Seven," and "The Imperial March" from Star Wars.
A GREAT COMPILATION!.......2005-06-05
I've come to appreciate soundtracks more and more. This compilation progresses chronologically through 60 years of film music, starting with 1939's "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood", and ending with "Titanic". It encompasses a huge range of styles. Along with the usual suspects - music from "Ben-Hur", "The Magnificent 7", "Star Wars", et al, there are a few real sleepers, like John Barry's medieval-flavored theme to "The Lion in Winter", or Leonard Roseman's lyrical "East of Eden". Blessedly, most of the tracks are original recordings, conducted by the composers, among them Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland. Only those of us burned by tinny, tacky, sacriligiously rearranged retreads on obscure labels can appreciate this.
There are a few notable omissions. The prolific Randy Newman isn't represented, though Uncle Alfred is. And NO Ennio Morricone? - incredible! Presumably, this has more to do with Sony's current copyrights and contracts than the relative merits of the composers. And it's fine to have John Williams included twice, but why two pieces from "Star Wars"? Why not the theme from "Jaws", for instance? Or "Sugarland Express", for a really unexpected treat? But these are minor quibbles. And for whatever it's lacking, there's no fluff substituted. This is real music from fine craftsmen, which sometimes attains art. A great intro to the form, and wonderful just to listen to. I bought it used - one of my best deals ever!
So So Compilation.......2002-01-14
My major interest in this CD was in the selection entitled "Robin Hood And His Merry Men" (duration: 4 min, 28 sec), conducted by John Williams, and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. It turns out that this is a re-issue of the track from Sony Classical SK 62788, 1997. Surprisingly, this performance is poky, ponderous, and prodding. The conducting is, well, somnambulistic. Miking/mixing/processing yields a sonic brick deficient in instrumental nuances while sounding like way too many musicians were shoe horned into the recording studio. As for the rest of the tracks, it's hard to believe, but Silva America offers better compilations! Best to skip this one.

I have several discs of film music, and this one if by far the best. As one of the previous reviewers noted, there are many peices absent that could have been included here, but I don't see how anyone could be completely satisfied with any compilation that fit on just one disc.
The performances here are crisp and clear, and include a good selection of both old and new, ranging from traditional film favorites like the Star Wars theme, to less common selections like the screeching strings from Psycho (at least, I think they're less common, but I could be wrong). And I could listen to the Magnificent Seven theme over and over.
Anyway, this is a great disc for almost anyone. If you're looking for one thing in particular, find that film's soundtrack, but otherwise, this is a fantastic disc, and one of my favorites!
Music In Film (NPR Milestones of the Millennium.......2000-05-02
Great CD;the music is crystal clear with an excellent variety demonstrating the wide variety of musical talents in Hollywood. Liner notes are also most interesting, explaining some of the history behind the cuts and pointing out differences in the composers styles...as with John Barry. His style ranges from "the Lion in Winter" bold dramatic soundtrack to the exquisitley tender "Dances with Wolves" theme music. A CD to enjoy over and over

Up and Down.......2002-11-05
This overture is beautiful. I think Zubin Mehta is a terrific conductor. I would enjoy the music much more if the engineers did a better job recording the CD. There is too much change in the volume level (and not by the composer). If the volume is high it is very high and if low, very low.
A Whiz-Banger!.......2002-10-11
I purchased this CD because I've always enjoyed Suppe's light, bouncy overtures and Zubin Mehta and the Vienna Philharmonic doesn't fail here with it's nice moving tempos and great colorful sound. The trumpet call at the beginning of "Light Cavalry" has always been an attention-getter (a musical alarm clock mind you). Another overture on this disc that I wasn't familiar with was "Vienna Jubilation" (which also starts off with a trumpet call) got my attention also which also includes a somewhat Suppe tradition (the waltz). Very vibrant and beautiful. The rest of the overtures are up to the same performance quality. However, I must say that if you want some of Suppe's overtures that have a faster tempo, then try Solti and the same orchestra if they are still around. I have an old London LP that has four of the mentioned overtures (Light Cavalry, Poet & Peasant, Morning, Noon & Night in Vienna, The Beautiful Galatea). These really move!! If you're looking for Suppe with a tempo that is just a tad slower than Mehta, then try the Janos Sandor/Hungarian State Opera Orchestra on Laserlight. With this CD you get a march (O du mein Ossterreich) plus eight overtures. These are very-well performed and sounds great! All these recommendations (my opinion) are about the best you can get!!!
Dizzying, Whirling, Fantastic, and Superlatively Energetic.......2002-06-06
I certainly made a good purchase with this one. I was in the mood for some peppy overtures AND I GOT 'EM!
The well-known Light Cavalry Overture is well-represented here (even though Mehta takes some liberties in the tempo at the end, I still enjoyed it), as are the almost as well-known Poet and Peasant and Morning, Noon, and Night in Vienna overtures. There isn't a weak track on the whole CD, and my favorite is the Queen of Spades Overture, Track 5. The highly-caffeinated orchestra starts out deceptively quietly, throws in some out-of-nowhere fortissimo chords (a la Haydn Symphony #94), and then begins to spin indefatigably faster and louder, accelerating beautifully even to the last note. You can't help but stay for the rest of the opera. The overtures grab you and won't let you go.
There is nothing but sheer audience candy in any of Suppe's works, but over a hundred years later, those shameless hooks still work. I relish every second of vivacity and bombast that overflows in copious quantities from this CD.
wonderful music from a wonderful artist.......1999-04-05
This is a great CD. It isn't the type that will put you to sleep. It is upbeat. Von Suppe keeps you tapping you foot and bouncing your head throughout the album. My personal favorite is the last one, "Morning, Noon, and Night in Vienna."

Customer Reviews:
I am lucky!.......2006-12-05
When I shared files a couple of years ago someone asked me if I had something with Arthur Prysock. I said I did'nt. And so I searched for him and I have to say he has a marvelous voice! He is one of the best.
Morning, Noon & Night.......2005-02-15
This artist beyond a doubt has the smoothest voice that I've ever heard. He hasn't gotten enough recognition for his beautiful voice and I feel he should have been in the Top Ten and stayed there. This is good music.
I'm looking for the title of one of Mr Prysock song.......2003-04-27
I feel Arthur was one of the greatest singer in his day. I'm now in the process of purchasing as many of his CD I can. I'm looking for one in particular (When Love is New) does anyone no the title of the CD this song is on? Thanks
The hippest crooner in *my* book !.......2001-12-04
Aside from a few "Sinatra" emulators (like Harry Connick Jr.) - -are there any American "crooners" left on the planet...? and is that necessarily so bad...? Nothing is worse than the music of a second rate crooner... however, when it comes to a first rate crooner... no experience is greater... and PRYSOCK was for sure one of the greats if not the greatest...
O.K. as for the CD... this is one of those compilations that has some tracks that are INCREDIBLE but a few that seem a bit out of place. For example, SHOW ME HOW TO MAMBO is a GREAT novelty track... but sticking it in between TAKE CARE and MORNING...??? And then there's a fantastic early Rock and Roll/screaming R & B type blues called WOKE UP THIS MORNING where he goes from that rich Prysock Baritone to a screaming James Brown type wail... crazy, but its wierd how its just thrown in there. - - nevertheless... I'm giving this CD 5 stars because even if the order of the tunes are a bit strange, there are plenty of tracks that warrent listening over and over again.. The opener TAKE CARE OF YOU in fact epitomizes Prysock Gold... as do tunes like MORNING NOON and NIGHT and YOU ARE TOO BEAUTIFUL... the soulful romantic sometimes bluesy crooner with that rich bassy vibrato voice. The Verve style string arrangements add a whole 'nother perspective...
Other high points... flamboyant stereophonic string orchestrations of September in the Rain, Autumn in NY and In The Still of The Night.... space age string arrangements of JET (a wildly swinging bossa with just the right touch of flutes and Hammond - - definitely sounds like something Pizzicato 5 would sample), brassy (classic Basie) intro of the wickedly bluesy Gone Again - and Prysock's spoken part on Autumn leaves - - oh, and a bit of operatic acrobatics (that temporarily tweek the mics) on Take Care of Yourself.
If you like this CD, check out Capital Record's ULTRA LOUNGE series ! There definitely is a deeper, bluesier and heavier side to Prysock than you hear on many cuts on this CD... but this CD still makes a great listening experience never-the-less...

Greatest Collection of Classical I have........2006-12-14
I don't care much for compilation CDs. Usually they are someone else's favorite set of songs from that genre or composer. I usually like the songs, but when I get into listening to the other songs in the genre or by the same composer I find songs that I'm more fond of.
This collection is different.
I try not to be too generous with my top ratings in iTunes for songs, I don't give out a four or five stars to just anything, but many of the songs from this collection make up a good chunk of my top rated songs. I just love this collection.
This is not a good digital recording.......1999-07-27
There is a 'record player' hum in the background when you try to listen to various tracks on these CDs. The compilation is wonderful. The Quality of the recording is very disappointing. The outside of the album cover reads DDD which I thought to mean clean and clear all digital recording. Don't be deceived by the cover.

Album Description

MY FAVORITE ARTIST!.......2006-01-28
My father used to work for BJ so I always loved his music. With his new chinese changes his band rocks. If you Like bob james try the following artists: BJ TRIO, Bob James and the Shanghai Angels, Fourplay (Bob James, Nathen East, Harvy Mason, Lary Carlton), and more that I forgot but I think I listed all.
Mellow with distinctive energy.......2003-10-21
The cd has a magnificent eclectic sound to it. The tracks each sound so strong and diverse from one another and yet they all work so consistently well in one package together. The rhythums and melodies are clearly individual and distinctly stand alone for each track. I always admire fabulous keyboardists and the combinations of keyboards with horns. Dave Koz (sax) and Rick Braun (trumpet) make sensational guest appearances. It's no surprise to me that those tracks are my favorites. I do really enjoy the entire cd because it's a little risky and it works so well.
A VERY TASTEFUL DELIGHT.......2003-08-11
I AM ONE OF THOSE FEW PEOPLE WHO LIKES THE DIXIE CHICKS, DAVE KOZ, GEORGE BENSON, LENNY KRAVITZ, JILL SCOTT AND ERYKAH BADU TO NAME A FEW. WITH THIS BEING THE CASE, I LIKE MUSIC THAT I CAN LISTEN TO WITHOUT PROGRAMMING AND REPEATING THE SAME 2 OR 3 SONGS! THIS CD IS HOT!! I AM LISTENING TO IT AS I SUBMIT MY COMMENTS. IT'S JUST THAT GOOD! I PICKED IT UP WITHOUT EVEN HEARING A TRACK! THERE ARE CERTAIN ARTISTS YOU JUST KNOW THEY HAVE TALENT. THIS ARTIST IS ONE OF THE FEW I GIVE THAT LEVEL OF REPECT TO. YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS CD. YOU GET IT ALL-JAZZ, FUSION, HIP-HOP AND VIBRANT SOUL...KEEP IT UP BOB-YOU GOT A FAN WITH ME...
Morning, noon & night or anytime in between.......2003-05-30
This is my first Bob James CD since the Double Vision collaboration with David Sanborn. On a whim, I bought Morning Noon & Night as an add-on to my Spyro Gyra "Original Cinema" purchase to get the free shipping. Being a long-time Spyro Gyra fan makes it hard for me to admit that of the two CDs I ordered, Morning Noon & Night is my favorite. A very delightful and relaxing listening experience once you get past the opening track, Street Smart. Not that I didn't like Street Smart, it just takes a few times listening to it to gain a sense of appreciation for Bob James' mixture of Hip Hop electronics and urban jazz. After Street Smart you a rewarded with Just One Thing and the title track, Morning Noon & Night with some great sax by Dave Koz. Overall this is a really good CD that will have you listening to it over and over for hours. Buy it, you'll like it, even Street Smart after a few listens!
MASTERFUL AS ALWAYS.......2003-04-07
BOB JAMES HAS BEEN A FAVORITE OF MINE FOR AT LEAST THE PAST TWENTY YEARS. EVERY RECORDING THAT HE HAS PUT HIS MIDAS TOUCH TO HAS SKYROCKETED TO THE TOP. IT MAKES NO DIFFERNCE IF ITS WITH HIS GROUP FOURPLAY OR SOLO MR. JAMES IS A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH. THANKS AGAIN BOB JAMES FOR GIVING ME ANOTHER REASON TO KEEP ON LISTENING TO SMOOTH JAZZ.
