My Marilyn
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962) rose above a childhood marked by loneliness, chaos and neglect to become a psychological, cultural and spiritual phenomenon of the twentieth Century. She battled depression, anxiety, sexism and addiction to prescribed medication while establishing herself as a shining star, accomplished motion picture actress, and historical figure. She was the first public figure to disclose childhood sexual abuse, and the second female movie star to establish her own production company in order to rebell against the repressive policy of her studio. Before the advent of the modern women's movement, she eloquently discussed sexual objectivication of women and advocated for human rights. Thirty-nine years after her death, Marilyn continues to fascinate new generations with her legacy of vulnerability, strength, beauty and talent. Marilyn loved literature, art, and music and was a passionate jazz fan. Ella remembered how Marilyn had managed to have her booked at a Hollywood nightclub (that usually did not invite African American artists) and got her an overwhelming press attention by visiting the club every night. In Ella's own words: After that, I never had to play a small jazz club again. She was an unusual woman, ahead of her times, and she did not know it.
On the occasion of Marilyn's 75th birthday, Swiss musician David Klein decided to honor this extraordinary woman with a unique jazz homage, using a choice selection of songs from her movies, most of which have not been recorded since her untimely death. An excellent tenor player who performed with Dee Dee Bridgewater, Billy Cobham, Kenny Clarke and others, Klein is also a founding member (and the drummer!) of the groundbreaking klezmer band Kol Simcha. For My Marilyn he chose a top-notch jazz trio from New York and a vocalist that he is familiar with since his earliest childhood: his mother Miriam. A well-known jazz singer in the 60s and 70s and admired for her Billie Holiday interpretations, Miriam Klein has recorded and performed with the likes of Dexter Gordon, Kenny Clarke, Roland Hanna, Slide Hampton and others. This is a welcome opportunity to meet her again in a marvellous, swinging tribute to a great artist.
My Marilyn is presented in a packaging de luxe (including a wonderful booklet with many rare photos).

Just OK.......2002-02-14
This is not a bad recording but it has some serious problems. Although it's sung in English, some of the diction is so mushy (particularly the lead tenor's) that it's hard to tell what the language is. The vocal performances overall are missing the Viennese/Hungarian style. There's a bit too much of the English music hall stylistically, particularly in the comic numbers. Still, Kalman's music is glorious and deserves to be better-known than it is.

I love this opperetta! I was first introduced to it when I was cast as a village child, actually Juliska and the music just waltz's my worries away!

English Operetta, Beautifully Sung.......2006-10-25
For those that love operetta, most think of Vienese operettas of Johann Strauss Sr and Jr, Lehar, etc and the American Operettas of Romberg and Victor Herbert, etc. Just a bit later there was an English exponent of the form, one Ivor Novello, who was a contemporary of Noel Coward, who wrote the most glorious Romantic songs. This CD, absolutely gloriously sung is a wonderful place to start an exploration of this remarkable composer who also performed in all his shows, in non singing roles. England has through the years produced a number of wonderful sopranos who have specialized in the light opera genre. June Bronhill dominated the 1960s and 70s. Marilyn Hill Smith is her heir aparant, blessed with the most ravishing soprano, full and rich across the range, with a radiant top that rivals Joan Sutherland. Her performance of Bernstein's Glitter and Be Gay on Jay records version of Candide is one of my favorites. This CD is my favorite Marilyn Hill Smith recording. I haul it out when I have been very good and deserving of a special treat. If you are not familiar with the glorious melodies of Ivor Novello, start here, you won't be sorry.

GREAT SOUNDTRACK INCLUDING A MONROE'S PREVIOULSY UNRELEASED SONG.......2005-12-29
High quality sound. I bought the LP 20 years ago when I was 18. Now I have this great CD which has 13 tracks (instead of the 8 or 9 tracks included in former soundtracks).
Jazz, latin music, unforgettable duets...
AND...a never released before version of LET's MAKE LOVE (trio with Montand and Vaughan with Monroe singing lyrics unheard in the other well known version of this song). How come they never released this version before? But what an excitement to discover something new!!
Plus another short version which is the opening credits of the movie. I love it..This CD highlights the obvious flair Marilyn had for singing.
MONROE MUSICAL MASTERPIECE~BRAVO MARILYN!!! .......2005-02-26
By the time Marilyn Monroe made "Let's Make Love" she was a truly awesome legendary figure who was at her peak both artistically and musically and sings magnificent in her own seductive and soulful way in a great set of songs that include a stunning Cole Porter classic plus an impressive selection of originals composed especially for this great musical by none other than the legendary team of Sammy Cahn & Jimmy Van Heusen and sadly they don't write them like this anymore! Studio orchestrations are richly varied going from a loose jazz sound with classic latin rhythms to lush romantic backings for Marilyn and her excellent co-stars that include British Pop Singer Frankie Vaughan and French Actor Yves Montand in his first starring role in a major US film. Opening with a fun and playful version of the luscious title song "Let's Make Love", Marilyn then lauches into a classic reading of the Cole Porter masterpiece "My Heart Belongs To Daddy" and brings things out of this standard and goes places that nobody else ever thought of...an amazing soul-stirring performance that easily stands as one of the very finest of Miss Monroe's all too short but totally brilliant career. When this film was released in 1960 it was a huge success with us baby-boomer teens who went to see it and many of us had the original vinyl soundtrack (I still have it!) and fell in love with Marilyn who did this wonderful romantic musical comedy and the classic "Some Like It Hot" back to back!!! With this wonderful score now on compact disc sounding better than ever with additional bonus songs I am sure that many will discover or re-discover that magic of Marilyn who still is incomparable and the brightest star of them all being pure magic on the Silver Screen...and way ahead of her time creating a work that is clearly the forerunner of films such as "Cabaret" and strongly influencing artists such as Madonna...Marilyn is at her best with Frankie and they are superb together in "Specialization" and the jazzy interlude "Strip City" has great keyboards mixed with an awesome kettle drum arrangement that is amazing. Marilyn and Frankie are sublime in a terrific duet version of the title song and "Let's Make Love" features a sultry Marilyn vocal that is tops and wonderfully complimented by a big band studio arrangement that flows and becomes latin for its introduction of Yves Montand whose French charm fits well into the mix...a charming and romantic Frankie Vaughn is captivating with Marilyn in the tour-de-force "Incurably Romantic" which again finds Marilyn superb and in top form...this song is reprised as a duet with Yves and Marilyn who are charming and winning together making this a collection a keeper...instrumental interludes such as "Christmas Eve Waltz" are fascinating and add to the great feel of this superb soundtrack classic which somehow has strangely been overlooked except by us real Marilyn connoisseurs who know that entertainment like this will never happen again as there was only one Marilyn Monroe! Closing is an intoxicating version of "Let's Make Love" by Marilyn and Frankie that show that talent like this is a once in a lifetime thing and I am glad greatness such as this was in mine!!!! Bravo Marilyn Monroe~your voice made love to us unlike any other and your beauty is eternally breathtaking...and you are loved and missed so very much!

Loved it .......2005-06-19
I Love the CD My Marilyn I would highly recommend it to everyone I'm going to buy it and add it to my Marilyn collection
Ten love letters to Marilyn Monroe.......2002-06-13
On this CD, Marilyn Monroe's crackling eroticism and the sensuous swing of club jazz are having a torrid affair. Swiss saxophonist David Klein risks an intense flirt with the elegant melodies from Monroe's movies, perfectly supported by a superb rhythm section and his mother, singer Miriam Klein, whose gently varied vibrato evokes the much cited candle in the wind. Great music, wonderful booklet.
An incredibly moving tribute to Marilyn.......2002-03-25
Already the first few bars warm your heart. Under David Klein's treatment, Monroe classics like "Diamonds" and "Some Like It Hot" experience a respectable renaissance. Singer Miriam Klein's stunning Interpretations put across Monroe's profound humanity, which almost completely vanished behind the facade of a movie vamp. Jane Russell, co-star and one of the few people who knew the real Marilyn, says of this CD: " Marilyn would have gotten a big kick out of hearing it." I unreservedly agree.

Not such a great sampling...........2001-01-21
Some of these songs are really stretching for a romantic mood. Especially some of the On the Town songs. It's not that they're not good though....All of this music is from other CDs that have been already been released. Don't limit yourself to just these songs. Go ahead and buy the other recordings. Deutsche Grammophon did the On the Town recording along with West Side Story and Candide. I'd recommend a different recording of West Side Story though. The one of Wonderful Town is the kinda newly released complete version of the musical. It's a good but expensive one. Also, this recording left out some of THE greatest love songs from Peter Pan (Dream of Me, Peter Peter), Trouble in Tahiti (Well of all people, There is A Garden, Finale), 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (Seena, Lud's Wedding), and Quiet Place (There is so much, too much). I think this recording, though okay, is a stumbling block to finding out about the real Bernstein saga of musicals. And if you are still getting this recording, the sound quality is really good. West Side Story is done by the masters of the opera so they sing it that way. Candide is operetic too, but then again it is an operetta. That's about all I have to say on this recording.
nice but operatic.......2000-02-23
This is a nice collection of Bernstein miscellany. Note however that the West Side Story, On the Town, and Candide are the "operatic" versions, with Te Kanawa and Carreras, Von Stade and Hampson, and Jerry Hadley, respectively. Bernstein conducts WSS and Candide and Tilson Thomas OTT. The surprise is the bits from Wonderful Town, which was recorded on JAY, not DG like the others. Featuring Ron Raines and Rebecca Luker, it's probably the most authentically "Broadway" of this set.

"More ... More ... More," says the greedy fan........2003-12-30
I love the fact that I can finally, after many years, purchase a CD collection of songs sung (almost)completely by one of my favorite voices. Many of the songs, I had heard and loved, yet hadn't realized that they were written by The Bergman's. So now I've been educated and while listening to Ms. Uggams' sing like: better than ever before.
I REALLY love this CD and listen to it more often than I am willing to admit. IF there is one negative, then it would be the lack of variety. Over the years I have found Leslie to be one of the more versatile entertainers. This collection put me into a relaxed (ocean-breeze type of) mode and kept me there without much change or modulation. Just smooth sailing throughout the selections, so to speak. Not a problem though...I just listen when I need to chill out and hear some good smooth and creative singing! Hopefully we won't have to wait so long for more offerings (on CD) from Ms. Uggams. She is, after all a real TREASURE ~ much under rated and I suspect; unappreciated by some. More power and much love to Leslie Uggams! The woman can sing.

Bland, bland, bland..........2005-03-30
Trust the MUSICIAN'S comments below...he knows what he's talking about. This is just a lackluster and unmusical performance that is not worth your time. Find another recording. Almost ANY other recording would be preferable!
Delightful.......2002-12-21
I've been a fan of Handel's Messiah for years, and I've listened to many, many collections. This one is my favorite. I like this one because in most other performances, the conductor is trying to put some "twist" on the performance, or to somehow make it "new" and "different." This collection does not do that. The insrumentals and vocals are very moving and draw the listener in, and the music does not have any modernistic reinterpretations or by this or that big name conductor. With respect to another reviewer (who did not enjoy the performance of the instument he himself plays), I find this collection to be very well balanced and skillfully performed. Of the many versions of the Messiah that I own, this one alone is worn out and needs replacing. ('Nuf said.)
Cheap for a reason.......2001-10-20
I purchased this CD wanting something inexpensive to practice the bass solos with and because it was available locally. Big mistake. The Bass soloist is horrid--extremely wide vibrato that obscures the melismatic passsages. None of the soloists are exceptional, the soprano being the best. Wish I had listened to the samples here first.
