I (Who Have Nothing) as an album has a strong focus on "remake material" and includes a beautifully understated vocal performance in the old Rodgers & Hammerstein standard "Loves Been Good To Me" as well as a dramatic interpretation of the old "Brother Can You Spare A Dime", a perfect fit for Jones and his over the top emotional vocal style that characterized some of his trademark hit singles. There is also a memorable remake of the Bee Gees late 60's US Top 40 hit "To Love Somebody" that seems tailor made for Jones from a musical standpoint. As far as hit singles go, "Daughter of Darkness", a knock off on the more memorable trademark 1968 Jones hit "Delilah" is a US Top 20 and UK Top 10 hit. The title track, a very dramatic, emotional song with heavy orchestration and much use of the classic Tom Jones Horn Section, rates well as a live performance highlight although this (like the single) is studio recording. Jones is best known for popularizing this early 60's song, although ex Drifter lead singer Ben E King first scored a hit with it roughly seven years earlier. Jones hit the Top 20 on both sides of the Atlantic with his rendition. "Can't Stop Loving You" is a typical MOR ballad (not the popular Ray Charles hit, this is an original composition done for this album) and as such met semi success as a US only single (peaking at #25). The album easily charted in both the US & UK, and was a US million seller.

Likewise, the summer 1971 release of Tom Jones Sings She's A Lady was another US million seller (peaking at #17 on the US album charts) and did well in the UK also. The name of course comes from the hit single from early '71, which became the biggest selling singles success of Jones career in the US (#2 on the charts). The song sees Jones going back to fast paced pop rock, uptempo arrangements, more electric guitar, and away from the lushly orchestrated power ballads that made up the bulk of his singles releases between 1969-1970. The album sees Jones again combining a handful of remakes (mostly newer material this time, no show tunes) with original compositions, moving towards a more mainstream country pop oriented sound. Jones does an excellent interpretation of Roy Orbison's "In Dreams" and shows that sex appeal transmitts over radio with his soulful vocals on the remake of the Fifth Dimension's "Puppett Man" (a US Top 40 hit). There are the customary ballads and a couple of uptempo rockers but nothing equal to "She's A Lady" in quality or sound.
Sadly, Jones excellent version of "My Way", used as the b-side of the "She's A Lady" single, is not featured here (although both songs were written by former teen idol turned pop star Paul Anka).

Tom Jones fans will clearly enjoy the bulk of these songs on this collection, and this is a good opportunity for long time fans to update their vinyl record collections with the improved sound of CD.
