Opening with a few bars of Stravinsky to set the adoring crowd on its feet, this once-three-LP set is Yes at their finest. This was, after all, probably the most mainstream act that had even provisional "prog rock" status, and their tunes show it. While "Heart of the Sunrise" may be one of the more modestly titled Yes songs (compare it with "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" or "The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus)" or even "Total Mass Retain"), it also bears marks of the band playing at its most frenetic pace around Jon Anderson's soaring near-falsetto. Rick Wakeman's grand synthesizer flashes are more than textural, finding visual meshes aplenty with Roger Dean's cryptic cover art--most of which is shrunken or absent on this two-CD reissue. When Yessongs was cut, Marshall stacks were in their heyday, and Yes happily engaged in harmonic and melodic excessiveness as well as carefully planned layers of complexity. "Roundabout" was the band's biggest hit to this point. It appears here faithfully reproduced. As for the rest, it's entertaining in a 1970s way--full of light shows, staged visuals, and more. It took a few years for prog rock to dwindle and for punk-colored art rock to swerve toward songs about buildings and food. On Yessongs, the band was peaking, singing songs with far grander purpose (Siberia, the Apocalypse, etc.). By any account, this is one of the classic live albums of its generation, and as the soundtrack to the hip 1998 film Buffalo 66 hinted, at least one manic Yes song ("Heart of the Sunrise") passed muster for drama in the 1990s. --Andrew Bartlett

Great music but horrible sound.......2007-03-09

The choice of music is perfect (one is missing, which is "South side of the sky) This is the perfect live hightlight of the three previous CD
(Album-Fragile-Close to the edge) but the sound is horrible.
You should consider Keys to Ascension Vol I and II for great performance and sound, instead of this one. Music is five star but sound is one single star, hence the mid section rating of three stars.

Yes' classic live album years on still sounds superb!.......2007-02-13

English prog rockers Yes released its sixth album Yessongs in May of 1973.
The Yessongs album was initially released as a TRIPLE LIVE ALBUM which was recorded on the band's Fragile and Close To The Edge tours of 1972.
The band consisted of lead singer Jon Anderson, bass player Chris Squire, guitarist Steve Howe, keyboard player Rick Wakeman and drummers Bill Bruford (who appears on two tracks) and Alan White (whom plays on the rest of the album).
Many critics complained that prog rockers were boring live but the concert stage was where bands like Yes, ELP, Genesis, Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull prospered as this live album proves (I first heard the album in 1997 when I acquired this remastered CD).
We begin with the Firebird Suite Intro which then gives way into a killer version of Siberian Khatru which flies by at a speedy pace and explodes like a bomb. Killer start to the album. Next is a spirited rendition of the classic Heart Of the Sunrise which rivals the studio version and easily kicks the studio version's a** in a major way.
Perpetual Change is next and is better than The Yes album version and Bill Bruford does a stellar two minute drum solo showing why he is one of the world's greatest rock drummers. Next is And You And I which is arguably better than the studio version with Howe playing the acoustic parts on his double neck Gibson electric guitar.
Howe then shines on his acoustic solo Mood For a Day which is played on an acoustic guitar instead of the classical guitar which was used on the original. We then follow with Wakeman's stellar keyboard solo The Six Wives of Henry the Eighth which shows why Wakeman is one of rock's greatest keyboard players. Then we segue into a killer rendition of Roundabout which is arguably better than the studio version.
I've Seen All Good People is next with the Your Move section playing well before giving way into an almost spiritual feeling version of the All Good People section which kicks a**. Next is the medley of Long Distance Runaround/The Fish (Schindlera Praematurus) which has Bruford on drums. This track shows us why Chris Squire is the king of the Rickenbacker bass and one of rock's greatest bass players as he plays the bass guitar like it was his last gig.
Next is Close to the Edge which rivals its studio version. This performance has the band playing like this was their last concert. The I Get Up I Get Down section gets some drums added to the organ section (the pipe organ sounding section) and sounds like a religious experience here. Awesome version.
We then have a superb rendition of Yours Is No Disgrace which is five minutes longer than the studio version and White's drumming being more harder edged than Bruford's jazzier feel on the studio version. We close with a stellar version of Starship Trooper which is better than the studio version, especially the ending section.
Yessongs initially peaked at #11 on the Billboard album charts in 1973 and sold a million copies Stateside.
In 1994, the album was re-released as a digitally remastered CD and is miles ahead of the 1980s CD issue although an updated remaster is in high demand.

Great Music-Poor Job of Remastering.......2007-01-30

The peformances are stellar, but Joe Gastwirt who remastered it at Ocean View Digital should be ashamed of himself. Muddy bass, poor dynamic range, etc. I only hope that the good folks at Rhino Records will eventually get around to REMASTERING it properly. They have done an amazing job on the Expanded and Remastered reisssues of the first four Yes albums.

Bessongs.......2007-01-28

All the Best songs at the time for Yes live in 1973. Performances are high with energy and in some cases like "Close to The Edge" and "Perpetual Change w/ Bill's drum solo" they are better than the studio versions. I would have liked to hear more of the "then" recently departed for King Crimson Bill Bruford, he only is on 2 songs here, the rest is the new drummer at the time Alan White.

I remember putting this album on and listening with headphones while looking at Roger Deans amazing album art...ah the 70's...
It is a blast to listen to on long road trips - so very raw and upbeat. Yes live has an amazing sound, and when this was recorded the equipment was massive and primitive by todays standards. I do miss the fullsize artwork, but since I still have my vinyl copy it's no loss. It is a great introduction to Yes and always inspiring to the Yes enthusiast (who probably already has it!). Get one for a friend...

I owned this LP in my twenties, when I listened to mostly jazz and classical music genres. I had always liked show tunes and the the music from My Fair Lady, especially. Andre Previn's ingenious renditions and improvisations to these songs are typical 60's jazz. This CD reproduction is truly a classic and one that should make up any collection of late 50's and 60's piano-based jazz trios.

Like others, I originally bought the LP back in the Fifties.It was always a favourite but of course vinyl dosen't retain its quality forever. What a great surprise then to find the CD was available thru Amazon.Since receiving this updated version,I have found that the quality of this recording has not dated one bit. Unlike some CDs, every track is a winner! Andre Previn has retained the essence of these memorable compositions but at the same time has added some pretty enjoyable, but tight improvisations on piano. Meanwhile the rhythm section , compliments of Manne & Vinegar set up the perfect platform for Previn as they drive each number along like a steam engine! A GREAT recording!

West Coast Sounds At Their Best.......2007-01-13

This was one of the earliest LP's that I bought low those many years ago when I firts began to collect jazz. When I saw it in CD formatt, I jumped to buy it. Previn, as usual is suburb. Leroy Vinneger enhances the group's sound with a solid base line: he is unabtrusively always back there. The bottom line, however, is Shelly. What a supurb drummer! Listen to how he drives the group through the songs of this great Broadway show. As an old drummer I swear that I can hear him "play" some of the melody on his instrument. Add this one to your collection.

Have searched high & low for this album, so Amazon thank you. Andre Previn is so cool on this album along with all of the other musicians. My favorite since college days. From "On the Street Where You Live" to the end, the musical interpretation from the Broadway play is magnificant and has haunted me all these years. Can't wait to hear it again!

An old favourite.......2000-05-14

This album was my first entre to modern jazz in 1958. I still have my original LP and it is still my most cherished. For anyone wavering about modern jazz, do not hesitate with this one. It never goes cold and never stops swinging. A must for anyones collection!

An evening to cherish. .......2006-10-28

If we only knew that this now-historic date would be the last stop in a short and often troubled life of Chet Baker....

The setting for this recording is truly brilliant. Chet is accompanied by an 18 piece big band as well as a 43 piece symphony orchestra. Together, a unique musical experience is formed as the NDR big band is accented by the soft and almost whimsical sound of the string section. Additionally, the musical styling of John Schroder's guitar adds layers of depth and punctuation to an already tight rhythm section.

This recording has all the makings for greatness. This set includes jazz greats like All Blues, Summertime, Tenderly, and In Your Own Sweet Way. Chet reminds us of the voice that we all fell in love with during a heartfelt homage to days past with My Funny Valentine. Even through the false teeth and rough exterior, Chet exposes his tender soul with each word.

The fuzzy sound of his trumpet can be heard on the back-end of the beat while Chet's solos are simple in nature, they become wildly complex as he effortlessly weaves in and out of the changes.

Chet provides a taste of his prototypical West-Coast sound in Monk's classic, "Well You Needn't" as he dances with the NDR big band in a rather exciting musical exchange.

I do believe this CD belongs in the company of other great jazz recordings. It certainly would be a welcomed addition to any collection.

Special recognition is in order of Executive Producer, Matthias Winckelmann for bringing such a fine recording to the masses.

Perfect Notes and Space.......2006-07-02

I've always been a fan of Chet Baker's trumpet playing and his singing, but never took the trouble to analyze his lines until this album. His solos are like perfect modern sculptures in that they don't waste notes, space, or form. Nothing is superfluous. His 2 choruses of improvisation on All Blues and on In Your Own Sweet Way show the genius of his discipline. His attack is a little more "boppish" than Miles, but he uses spaces as brilliantly. I didn't realize just how magnificent he was as an instrumentalist until transcribing some of his lines on this recording. Wow. I also wondered how someone as dissolute and unhealthy as Chet Baker must have been, could have the strength and breath control to play those lines with so much fluidity and strength. He sustained a few languid tones and played some long-winded phrases with lots of notes over several bars. Imagine what he would have sounded like if he actually took good care of himself. His skills were under-rated. For my money, Frank Sinatra in a lifetime of Sundays couldn't sound one tenth as hip as Chet. Mel Torme might be another story. Great album with phenomenal solos.

This is a great album. Can be very depressing to listen to though. His rendition of My Funny Valentine is nothing short of a masterpiece. Although he was messed up on drugs, his trumpet playing never suffered. Buy this cd if youre a true fan.

Last concert...big band.......2005-02-27

Since this is Chet's last recorded work, there is an emotional element about listening to this CD. So for historical pruposes, this is an amazing recording. With regard to the quality, his trumpet playing is in top form; however his vocals are a bit weak. However, I'm not much of a fun of the big backing band here -- I prefer to hear Chet in a more scaled downed setting -- such as a small quartet or quintet. Therefore, I'll mark this down to a 4. If you like the larger backing band this is a must have; otherwise, just a nice addition to your Chet Baker collection.

From Calaf's "Nessun dorma" from Turandot, in which the singer exclaims his love for the ice princess and the victory he will have over her, through Lionel's realization that he will have a new life and be happy with Lady Harriet in Martha ("M'appari"), and on to Rodolfo's falling in love with Mimi in La Bohème when he touches her hand ("Che gelida manina"): here we have some of opera's most beautiful love songs, sung by Pavarotti when he was in his golden-voiced prime. His "Una furtiva lagrima" is touching and gentle, while his rendition of the Neapolitan song "Core 'ngrato"--a diatribe against his lover's rejection of him--is heartbreaking. Radames's hymn to Aida ("Celeste Aida") in which he sees Aida as "the splendor of [his] life," is glorious, and all of the other selections are equally fine. For lovers and others, this is a handsome collection. --Robert Levine

Everybody knows Pavarotti has a good voice, whatever he sings it sounds great. In this CD I think he sounds better than the more recent recordings from him, e.g. the three tenor concerts. In my opinion I like "Una Furtiva Lagrima" the most, when his voice comes out he devoted such a sincerity throughout the song, I can just imagine that I am inside an opera house watching an excellent performance. "Nessun Dorma", which is one of his most "famous in singing well" aria, also excellent, his high notes are so beautiful and always beautiful (well...he is a king of high C man~ for real I rarely heard ppl can sing high notes better than him), but personally I like Franco Corelli singing "Nessun Dorma" more, and "Vesti la guibba" too (but of coz pavarotti also sound really good in this aria). As I read from some books, they said Pavarotti is the biggest lyric tenor nowadays, I think it is pretty true though. But one thing I found Pavarotti not "perfect" is, when he sings, mostly I just feel that "wow he sings this note beautifully", or "he sings everything perfectly", but not always have a feeling of "wow he melts my heart", or "wow he makes such a great atmosphere throughout the song", maybe because of his song selections. In general case I like Domingo and Mario Lanza better, when I heard Domingo sings I almost always feel his passion, musical sense, and communication to the audience; but in Pavarotti I dont always feel that, in this CD some of the song has this tiny problem too (like in "E lucevan le stelle", I really think he just "sounds well", I like Jose Carreras singing this song much better), but well this is just my personal opinion. However, his voice is a "legendary beautiful voice", that's 120% true. Again personally I highly recommend his "una furtiva lagrima", listen it and you won't regret it.

One of Pavarotti's best CDs.......2003-11-21

This is one of the best Pavarotti CDs I have listened to. It contains a great selection of 17 arias and Italian lyric songs. However, if you can afford it, "Pavarotti Greatest Hits: The Ultimate Collection" will offer more in a 2-CD set (a total of 41 arias and Italian lyric songs).

Luciano's greatest compilation CD.......2000-04-28

For over three decades Maestro Luciano Pavarotti has brought joy to human ears all around the world. Sure, the critics may scoff at the big arena concerts and at the later years' natural darkening of his voice. But we the fans just know that listening to him lifts our spirits and opens our hearts to the glory of human voice.

And that's exactly what this collection is all about. To compile it, the Decca producers used material from three albums: "Arias" (his earliest), "Favorite Neapolitan Songs" and "Passione," as well as some complete opera recordings such as "La Boheme" and "Rigoletto." The song "La Danza," Rossini's engaging tarantella is from a rare album "Pavarotti in Concert in Bologna" with Richard Bonynge. Most of these selections, therefore, are from 60s and 70s, in other words, Pavarotti's prime years. As he was establishing himself as one of the all-time greatest tenors on stage, he gave an all-out effort on recordings. And it shows. Listen to the vocal line in "Che gelida manina"; the breath control on "la speranza" is truly unbelievable. There is his signature aria "Nessun Dorma" and, of course, a song often mistaken for Italian National Anthem - Di Capua's "O Sole Mio!"

In addition to magnificent vocal pyrotechnics, Pavarotti's considerable acting-with-voice skills are represented on such demanding arias as "Celeste Aida" and "Vesti la Giubba". And it's a real treat to hear his Duca singing sparkling "La donna e mobile."

If you like Western songs then this is a great one to have.

If you like the Sons of the Pioneers then you have already heard the songs on this album, proformed almost identically. The only diference is Dale Evans, but since Roy was a member of the sons I guess it should be expected. If you haven't listened to any of the son's albums then Songs of the old west is worth your buck.

Sorry, Boys!

Although I thought the world of Roy & Dale, this album won't cut the mustard. I only had to listen to the previews to tell you that. This is not one of the better Sons of The Pioneers with Roy & Dale albums. This is one of those "times are changin' so let's slick this one up" albums. They slicked it up alright. Slid right outta my fingers and back to the rack.
Sorry, but I like the albums that have the "old" sound to 'em. Like they were singin' on the trail...not in the studio, with all those fancy voice enhancers. Just my two cents worth.

Ride Down Happy Trails!.......2003-05-26

Roy and Dale sing a collection of songs from their movies which record the flavor of the Old West. This is a great CD for Saddle Pals of all ages.

Roy and Dale: Always!.......2001-06-22

If you are a Roy Rogers and Dale Evans fan, you might want to add this one to your collection. The songs are vintage King of the Cowboys and Queen of the West material. The backgrounds are sweet and maybe a little too "orchestrated" for my cup of tea, but the vocals are crisp and of excellent quality. Dale is featured with equal time on the C.D., and her voice is one of the most beautiful you'll ever hear. Roy's "Colorado Trail" is,in my opinion, worth the price of the album. Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
