The Complete Concord Recordings [Box set]

Editorial Reviews
Album Description
It was a match made in heaven. In the early '80s, velvet-tone jazz vocal master, Mel Torme, teamed up with elegantly swinging jazz pianist, George Shearing, for a recording collaboration that would result in six already-classic Concord Jazz recordings over the course of eight years. Winning Grammy awards for the first two outings (An Evening With George Shearing & Mel Torme and Top Drawer) and garnering nominations for all six releases. This perfect match of musical wits brimmed with virtuosity, humor, refined taste and, of course, swing, on each and every recording. Concord Jazz is proud to present all six of these timeless Mel Torme/George Shearing albums in a special box, replete with a bonus disc featuring 17 previously unreleased tracks! Housed in a hard-back book style format with CD sleeves as pages. 2002.

5 out of 5 stars GREATEST BOX SET EVER!.......2006-04-27

IN MY OPINION, THIS BOX SET & BABS' ARE TIED FOR THE BEST BOX SET FOR OPPOSITE REASONS. STREISAND'S IMPRSSIVE BOX SET HAS A LOT OF TRACKS THAT WERE NEVER ON YOUR LPS & SHOULD HAVE BEEN. THIS BOX SET OF TORME/SHEARING IS ALL THAT THEY DID TOGETHER FOR CONCORD THAT WAS RELEASED & THEN SOME. THIS GEM HAS NOT ONE BAD TRACK! NOW GO OUT & GET THIS PRIME EXAMPLE OF THE GREATEST JAZZ & POP MALE BALLADEER OF THE LAST CENTURY. THE OTHER ORME: EYDIE G WAS THE BEST FEMALE!

5 out of 5 stars Simply two musical geniuses.......2004-05-20

Simply a wonderful pairing of two musical geniuses.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one you want.......2003-12-29

Mel Torme is was one of the best voices in music. He was blessed not only with a beautiful instrument, but he knew how to use it in ways no other has been able to understand or achieve. Many of the albums I've heard we're arranged with great production including strings, horns, and backup singers. This collection shows his ability to be one of the best jazz singers out there. The small ensemble allows him the freedom to bend the rules and create great improvisations along with his trademark scats. Great musicians along with a great voice make this Concord Collection a must have.

5 out of 5 stars A story in itself.......2003-03-04

All the Torme Shearing sides in one classic package. Not overdone just a reflection on the great combination of George and Mel. Ballads, Hip Songs, Humour, some classical overtones and marvelous piano and voice jazz. It certainly swings but also makes you laugh and cry. It's almost worth the price for the 7th CD - a collection of alternate or unissued takes. An album in itself.

4 out of 5 stars Sort of a grab bag.......2004-11-13

This compilation covers about the whole range of Bennett. The first disk is the typical NYC big orchestra with too much reverb on Tony faire. None-the-less enjoyable. The bulk of material came from a 1975 album. The 2nd CD is a more intimate NYC studio session with the Ruby Braff/George Barnes Quartet. Very nice. The 3rd CD and the 1st half of the 4th CD is the Bill Evans/Tony - Together Again album. It includes all the original cuts plus a couple of alternates of each cut. Sublime is the best way to describe these CD. The mastering is bit better on this CD than earlier releases. The last half of the 4h CD is sort of strange yet fun date Tony had in Buffalo. Buffalo? Bennett is backed by Marian and Jimmy McPartland and their band. The rhythm section is great (Charlie Byrd on guitar) but the horns sometimes sound like a clown band. I think maybe they were trying to do Dixieland but it sounded more like clown music. Fun nonetheless.

Sort of a weird compilation but I enjoyed it.
