Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great music, great price!.......2004-11-19

I purchased this box set with very little prior knowledge of this genre of music and I am extremely pleased with it. I played this at my workplace and many of my coworkers complimented the music. Some people might criticize the albums' quality of sound but I think that's just part of the allure -- to give you that "old-time" feel. It's a great starter set at a great price. This music lifts the spirits and makes a room smile!

5 out of 5 stars One-stop shopping for early Anita!.......2004-08-25

Having owned several expensive French imports for the various years of early Anita O'Day performances, I can say that the Proper Box set is an incredible value. They have taken almost all of her early performances with various small groups and large bands (including Krupa, Kenton, and Basie!) and put them all in one place, in chronological order and with decent sound. What's more, they put out an excellent booklet, with biography, photos, and complete discocraphy...kind of a mini-mosaic! Unlike some of her later, more sophisticated (and occasionally flat) performances, she is heard on these discs with a slightly less husky voice and always spot-on in tune and musically swinging.

As another viewer has pointed out, this set contains material that has fallen out of copyright while the artist is still living and she won't receive any royalties from this issue. I suggest he send her a check to salve his conscience and then go back to enjoying the music! Proper has done other great box sets of Django Reinhardt, Fats Navarro, Charlie Parker, and Bud Powell among others and I say more power to them! Another british company, JSP, offers similar box sets with remastering and extensive documentation and Mosaic, the leader in this field actually buys limited copyrights from the parent labels. If you can afford it, Mosaic puts out the highest quality sets.

3 out of 5 stars The high point of all her ensembles.......2003-05-07

Anita O'Day was a singer whose particular virtues become apparent to post-bebop ears only after time. She didn't have the subtle inflection of Billie Holiday, the sheer beauty of Ella Fitzgerald, or the romantic elaboration of Sarah Vaughan. Directness, lack of affectation, energy, enthusiasm, and projection of a working-class, non-kittenish femininity marked her singing.
Unfortunately, O'Day wound up being buried, for the first part of her career, in muscle-bound big bands like the Gene Krupa and Stan Kenton orchestras. Since she only sings during some of the numbers, and even then may be paired with unendurable male romantic leads, and surrounded by corny soloists who belong in Vegas, collecting her work can be like digging around in Paul Whiteman for Bix Beiderbecke solos. People used to put up with it because she danced the whole time, but you don't get that part listening to an old record.
This set fixes that. You're still listening to a lot of second and third-rate jazz music, but at least you know she'll sing in this number.
Of course, this is one of those "re-issue" labels that take advantage of lapse of copyright. You may not care about the record company - they're all jerks, as well as owned by somebody in some country you've never heard of, right? - but the last I heard, Anita O'Day was still alive, and shouldn't artists get some fruits from their labors? She won't get a penny from this.
Five stars for O'Day. Three stars for band mediocrity and questionable re-issue practices.

5 out of 5 stars Great music at a low price.......2001-07-12

It would be difficult to find a better deal for a jazz fan. Compilatons for artists of the stature of Anita are usually much more expensive. Anita O'Day's early recordings have been difficult to find and when available have been costly. This 4 CD set brings together all her comercial recordings from the 40's with a few air-checks and alternate takes.

Anita O'Day is probably best known for her solo career in the 50's, 60's and 70's when she created a style of singing that is still being immatated. Her early recordings show that in her younger years as a big band singer she had as strong an influance on that era as she did in later years. She was one of 4 or 5 female vocalists who defind the the big band style. During the time of these recordings, she was THE big band singer. She was the coolest, the hippest, the swingingest, the brattyest, and the one who taught everyone how to sing a fast song with style and without sounding rushed. You can easily hear this on "Green Eyes" where another singer sings the first chorus in a tense rushed manner, to be followed by Anita at a faster tempo but sailing through it like a cloud on a summer's day. Even Ella Fitzgerald, although promising, was still too young at that time to be at Anita's level. Anita's recordings with the Krupa band are some of the hottest of the big band era. These CD also cover the beginning of her solo career, and the emergance of an even more interesting and intimate style that was to facinate audiences in the 50's 60's and 70's. This collection shows that Anita was always a great artist, even in the beginning of her career, and the price of the collection makes it an unbelievable steal.

From her days with Gene Krupa and Stan Kenton in the '40s, Anita O'Day was a genuine jazz singer who could make the most of a big-band date. This 1961 recording pairs her with arranger Gary McFarland, who was just beginning to demonstrate his talent for creating constantly shifting backdrops filled with unexpected rhythmic figures and voicings. The title song and Willard Robson's "A Woman Alone with the Blues" gain orchestral dimension from McFarland's writing, while he's able to put his own stamp on Ellington's "Do Nothin' Till You Hear from Me." The songs are well-chosen vehicles for O'Day, a singer capable of both bemused irony and emotional directness, with the diction for Broadway lyrics and a facility for inventive scat singing. "Boogie Blues" updates an early O'Day hit with Gene Krupa's band, while Al Cohn's "Night Bird" and Horace Silver's "Senor Blues" are unusual in being big-band vocal treatments of bop tunes. The band is terrific, and altoist Phil Woods and guitarist Barry Galbraith make particularly good solo contributions. O'Day's vocals were overdubbed at separate sessions. It may add to the vocal presence, and given her scat exchange with Willie Dennis's trombone on "Up State," it seems to take nothing away from her involvement in the band. --Stuart Broomer

Your girlfriend left you, and you feel sad and rejected, but aunt ANITA is there to confort you. Beleive me ,with ANITA O'DAY, all those sad young men finally end up being happy true fans.Once you get to know that wonderful singer you'll be hooked for good to her talents, and she'll make you feel good.On this original record ,she gets mostly moody and sad just like the title song, but in the end she does a little scat to live it up.Whether she is sad or gay(because ANITA sure can swing), we fans just adored her.

5 out of 5 stars Another splendid O'Day verve re-issue..........2000-03-02

All of Anita O'Day's Verves are marvelous, she is one of the greatest bebop vocal improvisers of all time, and she is the last of the living lengendary jazz singers still performing today. This reissue of the original lp includes fine remastering as well as original cover art and comprehensive liner notes. O'Day's voice sounds "cooler" then usual, singing softly and sensually with a somewhat cooled down husky voice. The arrangements are equally cool by Gary McFarland. Overall an enjoyable set with spectacular versions of DO NOTHIN TILL YOU HEAR FROM ME, YOU CAME A LONG WAY FROM ST LOUIS and BOOGIE BLUES. Plenty of scatting and scat phrasing as usual and lot's of wonderful improvising. Highly Recommended as are all of her Verves are. Also see Anita O'Day live next time your in LA she sings every mondaay at the ATLAS.

      5 out of 5 stars A Jewel.......1999-04-07

O'Day's singing, by turns playful and moving, is always interesting. On this album, her interpretations are more explicitly emotional (this due, perhaps, to a slightly rougher voice) than on the other Verves I've heard. McFarland's arrangments are rich and surprising, with out-of-left-field bits that turn out to serve the songs perfectly--as good a description as any of O'Day's technique. Standouts for me are "A Woman Alone with the Blues," the scatted "Up State," and the slow-then-swinging "Nightbird," but everything here is a treat.

4 out of 5 stars this album is blossoming with good music.............2007-06-06

I was introduced to the original cast of FLOWER DRUM SONG, as a small child, on vinyl. For me, some of the songs (written by Rodgers & Hammerstein) made such an impression that I memorized them in record time and sang them to myself quite loudly! It wasn't until later that I came to recognize the themes of intergenerational and intercultural tensions that arise in this story, set in San Francisco's Chinatown. The original cast shines here, with some of the finest jazzy vocals (including Juanita Hall and Pat Suzuki).

We see an example of a more "traditional" woman, just arriving in the United States from China (played by Miyoshi Umeki) and a modernized woman (Pat Suzuki). They both sing songs that reflect their natures ("I Am Going to Like It Here," is sung by the newly-arrived Mei Li and "I Enjoy Being a Girl" is sung by the fiesty Linda Low, who juggles boyfriends like balls in the air). There are also numerous songs reflecting the tensions ("The Other Generation," "Love Look Away") and joys ("Sunday," "You Are Beautiful") experienced by a community of people brought together by culture, yet divided by cultural awareness and experience.

Though, some may criticize FLOWER DRUM SONG for its stereotypical depictions of the "generic" and presumed Asian experience, I found that the musical possesses a lot of heart and the music totally memorable. I can still remember the lyrics to some of the songs--especially, "I Enjoy Being a Girl," which is really an anthem to all women who enjoy being who they are (yes, it is decidedly "anti-feminist" in nature, but it's fun and upbeat). You will enjoy this, too. Pat Suzuki, a legend in the jazz scene, was a great performer and brought such sass and sauciness to her role as Linda Low here, as well as Jack Soo (BARNEY MILLER), who appeared in this musical. Give it a chance and I think you will enjoy it.

      5 out of 5 stars A very fine score.......2007-03-29

The first instinct is to lump this with flops like "Allegro" thanks to its trouble-plagued casting and staging; but all things told (not least of which R&H's hospital stays during production) it's a very fine and apt score, with one of their best songs, the ethereal "Love, Look Away", the sort of thing with its slow, swingy rhythm that should have spread to the world of close harmony (i.e., the doo-woppers) but never did. Hammerstein did some of his most ingenious lyric writing, searching out new rhythms and templates. He must also take blame for turning "I Enjoy Being a Girl" into too much the cross of "A Wonderful Guy" and "Honey Bun" (and yes, someone should have instructed Pat Suzuki about her bikini), and one wonders what if anything went through Oscar's head as he wrote the dummy-like list for "Chop Suey": "Harry Truman, Truman Ca-POAT and Dewey....Hear that lovely 'La Paloma'/Lullaby by Perry COMA...." (Listen for yourself -- this is precisely how the great Juanita Hall sings it.) With R&H one member of the partnership almost always pulled the other out of the muck, and however dubious the project (the politically-correct revival underlined that) they almost always found it within them to create haunting and invigorating tunes -- as most certainly here.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful R & H.......2006-07-24

Even though FDS was not their biggest hit (still a success by the standards of the day), it did not get great reviews (imagine that, compared to so much that has come since.)And there have been many, many shows with music that has barely survived that were bona fide hits. Hum a tune from Two Gentlemen of Verona? Or The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Oh, to have this quality today!

5 out of 5 stars Miyoshi Umeki, Arabella Hong and the OBC.......2004-08-15

FLOWER DRUM SONG is one of the small gems in the canon of Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals. The score contains some fabulous numbers, including the well-known "I Enjoy Being a Girl", though there is also the heartbreaking 11 o'clock number "Love, Look Away" (which must surely count as one of the duo's best ballads), and rousing numbers like "Grant Avenue".

Miyoshi Umeki has charm and joy to spare in her performance as Mei-Li, the young woman who enters the United States illegally, in order to submit to a forced marriage. Pat Suzuki plays the brash Linda Low, a sexy nightclub entertainer. The cast also includes Juanita Hall (SOUTH PACIFIC), Arabella Hong, Keye Luke and Larry Blyden. The original Broadway production was directed by Gene Kelly but by all accounts it was choreographer Carol Haney who was the real creative heart of the piece. FLOWER DRUM SONG was a modest success, running 600 performances.

5 out of 5 stars Sparkling cast album from Columbia Broadway Masterworks.......2004-01-26

Another example of how record producer Goddard Lieberson could elevate even so-so material and make it sound like a smash hit. The whole disc sparkles!

FLOWER DRUM SONG was NOT a smash hit. It got respectful though not terribly enthusiastic reviews and played out a successful run. The weakness was the book which borrowed too little of C.Y Lee's novel and is filled with weak (some say offensive) stereotype jokes. Hammerstein had a gem of a concept that is blown away in a few minor scenes...that the traditional immigrant parents want to hold onto tradition, while their americanized offspring want to follow modern local customs.
(FIDDLER ON THE ROOF would explore this theme much more fully.)

Still, the whole show was helped to no small extent by the songs and since that is all there is on the record, it actually makes for a highly enjoyable listen.

Miyoshi Umeki as the shy Mei Li contrasts nicely with brassy Pat Suzuki as nightclub singer Linda Low. There is less contrast between Ed Kenny as Wang Ta and Larry Blyden as Sammy Fong, possibly because the men get less of the score. The supporting cast, however, get a good share of the music: Juanita Hall leads the ensemble in "Chop Suey" and duets with Keye Luke lamenting the attitudes of "The Other Gereneration." Arabella Hong does a beautiful job with "Love Look Away" the show's standout ballad, though her character barely registers in the script. (In the novel, Ta's rejection leads her to suicide. In the musical she just disappears after her big number!)

There is a detailed synopsis in the CD booklet if you want to know how the plot ties all these songs together, but it is one of those cast albums where a synopsis is hardly necessary.

The book is in need of a re-write perhaps using more of the Lee novel as its source. The recent Broadway revival used a totally new story and re-allocated the songs. While the new version has its admirers, it is no more related to this FLOWER DRUM SONG than CRAZY FOR YOU relates to GIRL CRAZY..which is to say hardly at all.

The London cast (now out-of-print, but formerlly on Angel) is less impressive. However the movie sountrack (Decca Broadway) has some tasty new orchestrations and retains all but one song from the stage show, so that CD is worth getting...but start with this original cast disc first.

      5 out of 5 stars A unique literary work.......2007-06-01

I'm Gonna Raise My Baby is the beautifully illustrated, gentle story of a young mother who sings to her little boy about her promise to raise him with plenty of love and guitar music. The richly textured pictures show that the young mother was once the daughter of two African-American slaves who did not have the opportunity to give her the gifts of quality time or tender songs. In contrast to a childhood marked by her own parents' limited availability, this young mother promises her new son her constant attention. In a wonderful blend of standard and Pidgin English, the mother describes to her baby all of the ways that she and her guitar will support him through life. The message of this book is most strongly felt when combined with the CD that the author recorded to complement it (purchased separately). Even the youngest listeners will enjoy the musical performance of author Anita Adeeko Cook, who gives voice to the young mother as she celebrates time with her baby as one of the benefits of freedom.
