I grew up on this Record. The best one he EVER made!.......2007-07-02

Ok I will give my age away but I remember momma...putting this record on when I was a kid. She was cleaning the house in the spring, opened up the windows, and blare these records on the stereo. The receiver had bulbs in it. My daughter, who is 5, doesn't get all that stuff unless she comes to her grandad's house. Why would she? we have cd's and mp3 players!!! But I will share that old record set with my daughter and by the CD for the car when I get the dough. The BEST John Denver recording ever. Both for the repore with the crowd and the clarity and crackle of the recording.

I used to have the cassette of this album, and used it to learn many songs I still play and perform on the guitar today. It has been years since I lost the tape, and last heard this album. This took me right back to the last couple years of high school, and wonderful memories of singing and playing guitar with my friends. I smiled just like John Denver does on the cover!
The only thing I didn't like was the addition of new material from another "live concert" recorded a year earlier. A couple of the songs detracted from the charming feeling the album had in its original form. I guess the producers wanted to make it into "two full" CD's, since the original (concert) album would not fit on just one CD.
This album was my first exposure to "Grandma's Feather Bed," which as a music teacher, I taught my students for 16 years. I have loved once again singing along, and pulling out "this old guitar" to play along, as I had done during a time long passed, in which my life had much less stress and worry.
I guess this is one time you really can go back home!

This is the definative John Denver , cd. The double platinum album , " An Evening with John Denver " captures the essence and sound of ,the self-proclaimed ,good 'ole country boy , at his best , which is live. The interaction with his audience and the improv performances of his music provide this cd with a sense of awe and inspiration. There are plenty of signature songs and the most intriguing part is hearing the introduction to some of Denver's most beloved , future hits like " Annie's Song ". Originally recorded in 1974 , this live performance, is simply magical and each song can easilly become a sentimental favorite. " An Evening with John Denver " is the perfect cd to discover exactly what it was, that made him such a successful solo artist, and song writer. Recorded live , in LA , during the height of John Denver's career , the songs are performed with a sense of personal delivery and sheer exhuberance and energy. It is a very special cd and it will introduce you to the man behind the name. * One thing that is very noteworthy to notate , is that I bought the cassette version, before I purchased the 1992 cd version. I noticed that the, 1992 cd ,leaves out two very wonderful songs , that I really enjoyed on the cassette version. Those two songs are " Boy From the Country " and " Today ". However , " An Eevening with John Denver " was re-re-released in 2001 and those two songs reappeared. Regardless of this edit , and whichever version you purchase, " An Evening with John Denver " , engulfs you into a time capsule and takes you on a very special musical journey. Great listening for road trips !

this is their best cd. evening out and take this to.. are the besst. afer that, with cork tree, they just became loser sellouts. this one is the best because pats voice is different, and i think they had 5 people in the band. plus i'm a huge fob fan, so i have like everything, so yeah

i have been a fall out boy fan since before this cd came out and i love the music on it. however when fall out boy put this record originally the record label (uprising records) screwed them out of their money and this re-release was not done with the permission of fall out boy and is just an attempt by uprising to make money after fall out boy's succes with from under the cork tree. the band never talks about this cd like it doesnt exist.

I'm about to but this CD. I've been looking for it in stores all over the place and can't find it. I have downloaded most of these songs already, and they are all amazing. I'm a huge FOB fan, and these songs are great. However, if you want thier best, I suggest From Under The Cork Tree or Take This To Your Grave.

Fall Out Boy's first album, Evening Out With Your Girlfriend is really amazing. If you listen to it you can almost tell that they're developing their signiture emo/punk sound that they produce through their music today. I also enjoy how they have the first "Calm Before The Storm" and how they also have it redone on Take This To Your Grave. The songs that stand out for me on this CD are:
-Calm Before The Storm
-Pretty in Punk
-The World's Not Worth Waiting (For Five Tired Boys In A Broken Down Van)
-Parker Lewis Can't Lose (But I'm Gunna Give It My Best Shot)

All in all, this CD is a MUST for any Fall Out Boy fan. Add this CD to your collection today, you won't be sorry you did.

"If, after hearing my songs," Lehrer says in this disc's liner notes, "just one human being is inspired to say something nasty to a friend, or perhaps strike a loved one, it will all have been worth the while." Makes him sound like a modern punk, eh? Not so, though. Lehrer, ever the king of jolly vitriol, recorded these still potent parodies in the '50s--and the best of them, "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park," "The Masochism Tango," and "The Elements" (which joins science with Gilbert & Sullivan) remain both nasty and striking. Musically, Lehrer comes across like a demented Cole Porter, wrapping sophisticated, showy tunes around his acerbic jokes. Lyrically, he's a clear forebear to folks like Phil Ochs and Barry Crimmins, who also cloak their commentary in comedy. --Michael Ruby

Tom Lehrer is a bit of late find for me. But having discovered his bountiful vineyard, I am drinking him down to the dregs.

Lehrer's brand of knowing, culturally-savvy and savage wit are are on moderate display in this collection. There are the classics ("Poisoning Pigeons in the Park" and "The Elements"), plenty of little-known but sparkling gems, but a weak piece or two ("Bright College Days" and "She's My Girl") that have little to say. Lehrer's wit is dry and self-deprecatory, and his music is best when it lampoons the excesses of his age or when it hilariously upends a cherished piece of culture. "Oedipus Rex" is a terrific piece that presumes (rightly, as far as it late-1950s audience went) a certain familiarity with the classics. The leering repeated tagline about the king "who REALLY loved his mother" is still eyebrow-archingly naughty today. "It Makes a Fellow Proud to be a Soldier" is Lehrer's reflection on the odd set of misfits, morons and maniacs whom he met on a stint in the Army. "We Will All Go Together When We Go," one of the more topical of his works, could be considered a pre-antiwar song, putting a comic face on the global annihilation promised by "The Bomb." With lines like, "When the air becomes uraneous, we will all go simultaneous," Lehrer shows how nuclear war, for all its ability to terrify, is fundamentally ludicrous and perhaps worthy of opposition.

Other pieces have less topical import, but showcase Lehrer's piano virtuosity. After shredding the value of banal folk tunes like "Clementine," Lehrer demonstrates how the old standard would have been played by Cole Porter, Mozart and one of the "cool" composers of the Beat era. While he is at it, he conveys his own unfortunate bias against modern music. Poised as he is on the cusp of the decline of classical music and the advent of rock, Lehrer is none too respectful of the new genre, sneeringly referring to it as "childrens' music." Even in 1959, this sentiment met with subdued laughter and only polite applause. At age 30, Lehrer's musical heros (Gilbert and Sullivan, among them) were quickly becoming irrelevant, and he can appear as a bit of a fusty dinosaur. But never mind that. For every knock-out punch that doesn't connect, there are ten that do. "Masochism Tango" is still freakish, nearly 40 years after it was written. The writer of "The last time I needed twenty stitches to sew up the gash, that you made with your lash" is no homebody, by the standards of his time or of our own.

Lehrer loosened up quite a bit between this offering and the later "That Was the Week That Was," where his political wit and insight were most fully developed. Yet this collection is quite worthwhile in its own way, featuring Lehrer's tight lyrics and musical versatility. Hearing the reaction of the audience is definetly a plus. It's fun to hear what made a 1959 audience howl -- even jokes that are obvious and lame by today's standards were evidently quite fresh a half-century ago.

When this recording hit the streets, Tom Lehrer's short career had yet to peak, and his best output was still ahead of him. Pity that voices like his have been so rare. Happy are we who can appreciate, and perhaps hope to emulate, his style and outloook!

Tom Lehrer was the most brilliant song satirist of the 20th century. This live album features the same songs that were on his studio album "More of Tom Lehrer". But this album arguably is better than that one, since you get to hear Lehrer's introductions to the songs, as well as the audience reactions. Anyway, this is a very funny album, and it's a "must get" for fans of musical comedy.

Lehrer is hilarious!.......2005-12-30

This CD is hilarious! How can you possibly deny the genius of tunes like "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park" ("When they see us coming the birdies all try and hide, but they still go for peanuts when coated with cyanide"...) or "The Elements" (the periodic table set to Gilbert and Sullivan, as you probably know by now). Lehrer's black humor and commentary always makes me laugh when I pop this disc into my player, and as an added bonus, this is a live disc, so we are treated to Lehrer's monologues as well as his songs, which are usually just as funny as his songs, if not more so. Highlights include the story of Dr. Samuel Gall, inventor of the gallbladder, and a bit about his friend Henry ("He spelled his name H-E-N-3-R-Y. The 3 was silent, you see"...)who wrote novels ("about a young necrophiliac who finally achieved his boyhood ambition by becoming coroner").
Even though these tunes were written in 1959, they haven't dated, and still remain as fresh and funny today as they were 46 years ago. If you enjoy black humor, and like to laugh, what are you waiting for? Buy this, and/or any other album by Tom Lehrer, today!

Quality always holds up........2004-07-16

One reason why the great songs of Tom Lehrer hold up after all these decades is that some of the issues they cover have not gone away. The Cold War may be over, but the weapons remain. And anyway there are other ways Armegeddon may arrive. Misunderstanding between the sexes will never vanish.

But I think the real reason Tom Lehrer's "An Evening Wasted..." has held up so well for so long is that his humor and craft are top quality. We still read Mark Twain's acerbic satires. Will Rogers is still an American icon, while others have come and gone. And in the tradition of Twain and Rogers, Lehrer, while commenting on contemporary conditions, takes them and twists them in a way that is nothing short of brilliant. And, without realizing it, has given us a better understanding of his times, while making us laugh (or weep) at ours.

The "Essential" Purcell? Well, you could get a bunch of critics to argue about that for a few days, but in the meantime, here is a sampler of highlights from the King's Consort's three admirable Purcell series: the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs, Complete Anthems and Services, and Complete Secular Solo Songs. There are, of course, some of Purcell's most-performed pieces (which probably are "essential"): Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, "Sound the trumpet" from Come, ye sons of Art, Rejoice in the Lord alway (the "Bell Anthem," named for the string figure at the opening that sounds like pealing bells), the gently patriotic "Fairest isle, all isles excelling" (sung by a miscast James Bowman), and a selection from the funeral music for Queen Mary. There are also some delightful surprises--particularly among the little-known secular songs and church music. The plaintive "O fair Cedaria" gets a lovely performance by Barbara Bonney (a singer not usually associated with Purcell); tenor Rogers Covey-Crump (possibly the ideal high tenor for Purcell) sings the enchanting "If music be the food of love"; the church anthems "Let mine eyes run down with tears" and "Remember not, O Lord, our offences" have some startling harmonies as daring as any Monteverdi ever wrote. If you're unfamiliar with Purcell, this reasonably priced disc is a good place to start exploring without a big initial investment. --Matthew Westphal

Absolutely beautiful baroque music! The arrangament, singing and instrumentation is superb. It is too bad that Henry Purcell is not as widely known as Bach, because he should be recognized equally well."The Sparrow and the Gentle dove" is alone worth the price of the album! I can not stop playing it!

Like in his renditions of Handel's oratorios, Robert King manages to bring a freshness and strenght to Purcell's music that I had seldom heard before. This CD also features some of the best performers of early music in the world. My favourite tracks are Oh, Fair Cedaria, sung by the multi-talented Barbara Bonney; Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher; She Loves and she Confesses too, sung by the wonderful Susan Gritton; and Welcome, Welcome Glorious Morn, sung by Rogers Covey-Crump. The only track I didn't find absolutely wonderful is Fairest Isle, sung here by James Bowman. Don't get me wrong, I generally love Mr Bowman, I think that his performance in Mr Purcell's Most Admirable Composures (also conducted by Robert King) makes it another essential Purcell recording; but I find that Fairest Isle was much better done elsewhere, particularly by Christopher Hogwood and Barbara Bonney.

These songs aren't only beautiful, they're also poignant, sweet and unpretentious. I think that it will be very clear to anyone who listens to this recording that Mr Purcell was one of the finest composers that ever lived.

Be Welcome then, great Sirs (and Mesdames)........2001-10-20

If anyone has benefitted from the reversion in the last three or so decades to period instruments and historical reconstruction, it is Henry Purcell. Before, he was merely great, the peerless word-setter in the English language, a virtuoso of boundless range, a professional composer whose offical commissions were always imbued with personality and invention. But period instrumentation has added to this a greater depth, an other-worldly texture of sound. With his intricate, multi-part vocal writing, his preference for low, rumbling instruments such as the bass viol and the strange and remarkable theorbo, as well as his often sombre and low-key subject matter and treatment, Purcell creates a round, glowing, humming sound as pregnantly full as dub reggae.

This has an extraordinary effect on the listener. Whereas Bach, with his mathematical abstractions, sounds universal and timeless, Purcell's music takes the listener back 300 years, back to different ways of thinking about, feeling about and addressing things we still think etc. about today - death, love, friendship. The emotion is timeless, but the music's beauty is alien, THEIRS, hence its preciousness.

A lot of intelligence has gone into the unity of this compilation, beginning with two Welcomes (to the dawn and to the listener, in this case a King), and ending with thoughts of evening, death and a Baroque 'Thank you for the music'. These are bright, fanfare-like works, but the predominant mood is slow, ruminative, quiet. The selection covers the wide range of Purcell's oeuvre, from opera and funeral marches to secular songs and odes, and includes his most famous vocal works - Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher, and never more evocative of pagan loss and death; the massive 'Bell Anthem', with its ingenious opening symphony and joyful antiphon; and a miraculously serene 'Evening Hymn', Dido's opposite, death indicating hope, the treble voice swirling over the heavy ground bass like the soul released from the inert body.

it might seem quixotic to choose highlights from an exemplary collection of highlights, but the entry of the strings washing over the serene repetition of 'Be Welcome then, great Sir' always makes my heart stop still, while the musical picture of 'Bold Honour', the 'noisy Nothing, stalking shade', blocking the poet's amorous intentions in 'She loves and confesses too', adds a chilling hint of life's transience to a bouyantly bawdy song.

Brilliant Purcell Disc .......2000-11-30

With this album director and Purcell expert Robert King provides the listener with an excellent introduction to the composer's vocal works. The pieces presented here were taken from Mr. King's recordings of 'The Complete Odes and Welcome Songs', 'The Complete Anthems and Services', 'The Complete Secular Solo Songs' and diverse anthology discs. King, his wonderful soloists and musicians do the brilliance of Purcell's music fully justice. Whether he was commissioned by royalty, the church or theatre, Purcell shone in all areas. This disc certainly demonstrates the variety and originality of his craft, not to speak of his uncanny ability of setting words to music.

An outstanding Purcell offering. With a beautiful perfomance by Barbara Bonney of 'Oh, fair Cedaria'. Susan Gritton is equally captivating in 'She loves and she confesses too'. Gillian Fisher's rendition of the famous 'Dido's Lament' is haunting and poignant. Further an intelligent and brilliant 'Hosanna to the highest' by Michael George. James Bowman and Michael Chance sparkle in the countertenor duet 'Sound the trumpet' (from 'Come Ye sons of Art away'). And I should not forget to mention the joyous, luminous performance of the beautiful 'Bell Anthem'. To name but a few favourites, only James Bowman's 'Fairest Isle' was a disappointment.

Those who are familiar with Purcell's music will get an excellent disc with some of his most beloved works. If you are new to Purcell, this is, as already said a great introduction. Which might be the incentive to further explorations of Purcell.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

I would recommend this CD to anyone who loves music--period! Christopher Parkening is unquestionably one of the greatest classical guitarists of all-time. He embodies personal excellence like no other and is a brilliant artist. This CD is a must-have for any classical enthusiast. My favorite pieces include: Tárrega's "Recuerdos de la Alhambra," "Romance," Bach's "Prelude No. 6," and Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez." There are other versions of these pieces as well, but I always prefer Parkening's renditions, as they are oh so extraordinary--especially the recording of Aranjuez!! Other guitarists never seem to capture the essence of Rodrigo's musical masterpiece (e.g., Göran Söllescher in "Mad About Guitars"). But Parkening did! And the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was a perfect accompaniment.

This CD is definitely worth buying. Included is a CD booklet, which illustrates the history of Parkening's illustrious career, interesting tidbits about all 25 recorded pieces, and several photos of his early life to his "breathtaking performance" at Rodrigo's 90th birthday celebration at the Royal Festival Hall in London, 1992.

I am not going to go into great detail. I am working on a degree in classical guitar and I can say this is something to strive for. His musical interpretation of the peices represented here are some of the best I've heard. His tone,color, and phrasing is incredible.

In guitar ` s playing there have been many renowned performers, gifted of exuberant technique. But curiously the Apollonian playing is not by itself strictly enough. The guitar is the instrument which is closer to heart as any other one. It demands from you passion and sentiment. There have been three well known guitarists, one of them from England and the other one from Spain and the third one from Japan whose sensibility was totally absent in their performances.

But fortunately for us, there have been notable interpreters that have been maintained a desired balance and contrast between brain and heart, achieving great distinction and total acknowledgement around the world. I would name seven primordial names along the instrument `s story. First of all: the mythic soloist Andres Segovia, Regino Sainz de la Maza, John Williams, Alirio Diaz, Manuel Berrueco, Siegfried Behrend and Christopher Parkening, among the most representative ones of a great list.

Christopher Parkening `s career has made a brilliant colorist, an impeccable and sensitive interpreter of this well reduced repertoire. His profound artistic conviction and convincing phrasing has been a perpetual motive of constant invitations and presentations around the world.

Extreme virtuosity.......2005-09-25

CP has become my chief inspiration to improve as a classical guitarist. His performances here are, without exception, phenomenal. He makes the most difficult pieces sound effortless. I prefer CP over John Williams because, while Williams is also unquestionably a master, he sounds a bit robotic to me at times. CP, on the other hand, never sacrifices musicality to precision. He sublimely maintains both.

A Hidden Gem... in spots........2007-03-08

Complaints: 1. a good bit of this is a bit more moody or slow than I was hoping for from these two... (not that, when the is right, those particular songs don't sound great). 2. As others have noted, Petrucci's monstrous technique on electric guitar doesn't translate seamlessly to acoustic: he's far better than most, but not "perfect" the way he usually is on electric.

Compliments: 1. Petrucci on "Bite of the Mosquito" is just plain a jaw-on-the-floor extravaganza of speed/alternate picking in vein of Flight of the Bumblebee... when you see the title and ponder the possibilities, you might wonder what Petrucci is capable of... and even with expectations very high, he still proceeds to blow you away. I can't believe nobody has singled this song out yet. Sure, it's "just shredding," but if you play guitar, then give it a listen, and then find the tab, and then add it to your practice regimen: the ultimate exercise in speed/alternate pciking AND it sounds great, unlike your usual chromatic practice runs. 2. "In the Moment" and "Black Ice" seem particularly well put together and are kind of what I expected all along.

If you like shred, get it for the last track... and if you like the moodier aspects of DT and get into the music as much as the mastery, you'll like it even more than I did.

I stumbled upon this disc while surfing the www. Decided to purchase it based on John Petrucci's name, the name of the disc, and because it was a piano and guitar duet. I assumed that the piano player would be halfway decent because he was playing with Petrucci. The cd did not disappoint.

This album is a priceless gem. I was expecting the "usual" high quality stuff when I ordered this CD but what I got initially surprised me. A semi-acoustic set played live, comprised only of piano and quitar (acoustic and electric in some pieces).

Worth every one of my dollars!

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

Great CD.......2006-08-06

This is a wonderful double CD of fabulous musical numbers performed by theatre greats and directed by a legandary musical director.

Simply the Best.......2005-06-29

First, to the person who criticizes the recording b/c of "Broadway Baby." Daisy Egan (who sings in in this recording) sounds like she's 10 becuase she IS young. She had just appeared on Braodway in Secret Garden and won a Tony for it. It's a joke...Broadway BABY...hello, it's a joke.

In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.

In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.

If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.

Inconsistent, but mostly excellent.......2004-03-21

I am sure no knowledgeable person would deny how absolutely perfect all these songs are. However, the performances on this album are extremely inconsistent. It will go from an excellent rendition (Waiting for the Girls medley, Sunday, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Sooner or Later, Green Finch, Send in the Clowns, Pretty Lady) to the weird (I never Do Anything Twice), to the bad (Broadway Baby, Our Time). I still have absolutely no idea how they managed to butcher one of the best songs ever written--Good Thing Going--and turn it into smooth jazz elevator music. Why would they give Broadway Baby to someone who sounds like she's 10? That said, Liza Minelli, Glenn Close, Karen Ziemba, Dorothy Laudon and the "Waiting for the Girls" performers are all very good. And ending with Bernadette Peters and "Sunday" ends the set on a absolutley fabulous note.

I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.

There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.

I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.

A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16

There's something to be said for the first concert you ever see at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate enough to have this be my first. This entire evening was devoted to his genius and the performers did not disappoint.

This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.

My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."
