Shellac consists of Steve Albini on guitar, Todd Trainer on drums, and Bob Weston on bass. This is their fourth and longest release and all the songs are about Italy or greyhounds. Both the CD and LP come packaged in a beautiful full-color gatefold sleeve. The LP also includes an OBI or slipcover that was drawn and hand-silk screened by Jay Ryan. The CD has a non-hand-screened OBI.

not as bad as my brother says, but still............2007-06-10
if you still 'really' like shellac after 13 years, then...... you will like this....i guess. i haven't really cared about shellac since 'at action park'. the two early 7"s 'uranus' and 'the rude gesture' are what i turn to when i'm in the mood, but i keep up with what's new. "i'm" bored with this, but i wouldn't say it's a bad album, like say....... '1,000 hurts'. In general the shellac sound hasn't changed. The album sounds like somewhat inspired mediocrity 'to me', but like i say..... it's been 13 years.....and they've never been my favorite band. ok....adam....i'm yawning.
Worth the wait........2007-06-06
"Excellent Italian Greyhound" finds Ablini and co developing their signature sound even further. The album opens up with the eight and a half minute "End of Radio" which slowly but steadily builds up from just Steve and his guitar only to return to square one and build up all over again. And the intensity only lets up for the two minute instrumental "Kittypants" which is quite possibly the most melodic thing they've ever recorded. The album closes with the brilliant "Spoke", which finds Steve Albini and Bob Weston in a screaming match of sorts over a fast-paced drum beat courtesy of Todd Trainer.
If you're a fan of punk, indie, rock, or just music in general, do yourself a favor and pick this one up.
Yawnfest........2007-06-06
The only good things this pretentious band put out were the early 7"s and At Action Park. You can take a dump on the rest )Terraform save a couple tracks, 1000 Hurts)and this steaming pile. Signature sound? Not too sure on that, Albinis metal guitar/pick set up sounds nothing like it did on amazing tracks like Wingwalker. Please, someone try and tell me this and the last two albums were anywhere near as good as that track.
This album reminded me of their "Futurist" LP, which was boring too. Id rather hear Albini harp on about houses full of garbage 'with the doo-doo and the feces on the wall' than keep this. Too bad, I like the album cover art.
Well its finally here........2007-06-06
Ah at last after a 7 year wait since 1000 hurts we have the new shellac album and has it been worth the wait, the answer is a most definite yes. This album is there most intense record since at action park, the album has great depth and energy and with epic songs like the end of radio and genuine lulabelle it shows shellac have dug deep to show there experimental side and then you,ve got songs like steady as she goes and be prepeared which showcase the band at there most brutal and intense. To finish off my review all i can say is this album is my fave album of the year along with the new daniel higgs album and its gonna take something very special to top either of them, totally essential.
7 years!.......2007-06-05
Well not quite if you count the peel session recording from 2004, which include some of the tracks on this album. Nevertheless though, this thing has been a long time coming. yet it definitely has been worth the wait. Shellac's signature sound is what you get here, and the lyrics and theme are at times droll (e.g. 'be prepared') but always interesting. The guitars and percussion are what draw you in though, as i don't really think this band has many peers in their level of coheseveness and energy. Of course, it goes without saying that their live show is good, however they rarely tour due to their day jobs as recording engineers etc. so if they come to your town you should go.

Best ROCK compilation EVER !!!.......2007-02-10
If you like rock and do not have this cd you're a fool. Sorry about the harsh words but simply put, this is the best rock compilation ever!
I get goosebumps to almost every song on this cd.
Here's the tracks that give me goosebumps:
1.Extreme - Play with me
2.Vital Signs - The boys and the girls
4.Tora Tora - Dancing with a gypsy
5.Shark Island - Father Time (this one is so unvelievable)
6.Big Pig - I can't break away (another super song)
7.Shark Island - Dangerous
10.Power Tools - Two heads are better than one (aaaaah)
Get this cd and have a great time.
Most Triumphant!!!.......2006-07-02
A most Excelent compliment to the bodacious movie this soundtrack is very cool! My friend showed me the movie like a year ago and it is my favorite movie now. Be Excellent To Each Other And Party On Dudes!
A fun soundtrack to a fun movie.......2006-05-10
Many of the reviews of this album that have already been posted make a range of excellent points. First of all let me just say that this movie was fun and really captured the times. The soundtrack tries to do the same but doesn't quite match the movie. For both to be in synch we had to wait for the second film.
Anyway, for what it's worth here is my track by track analysis.
Extreme - Play with me - This is a juvenile yet way cool track. The guitar work is great, a real standout and has some quite distinctive Nuno Bettencourt touches. The guy had way too much talent for one human being. I can see how the inherent silliness of the track may grate with some people though.
Vital Signs - The Boys and the girls are Doing It - my brain tells me that I don't like this song but my head keeps on bobbing away to it whenever I'm driving down the highway to this CD. A fun track that suited the movie.
Glen Burtnick - Not So Far Away - some may like this, but for me it's a total waste of space. I can't justify that opinion with any great insight - something inside me just hates this track.
Tora Tora - Dancing With A Gypsy - Ah yes Tora Tora. They were utterly lambasted at the time. I've never heard any of their albums so don't know if that was fair or not. But anyway, on the strenght of this track they were the audio version of a good party. Mindless yet totally fun and the track bounces along with bright and buoyant good vibes.
Shark Island - Father Time - why didn't Shark Island break big. No forget big, why didn't they break huge. This band do themselves a big favour with this track. I'm convinced half of their album sales were due to the inclusion of two of their tracks on this soundtrack. Strong song, strong vocals, a band with intent and they actually manage to combine some ooommpphh into their tunes while still making their songs fun. Nice solid guitar work but it's the vocals that really rip for my mind.
Big Pig - I Can't Break Away - Big Pig were not one of my things at the time. They were deemed to be somewhere between a pop band and a rock band with a gimmick name. However they'd had a hit or two at the time and I gotta admit, even a dedicated hard rocker such as myself can enjoy the uplifting vibes of this tune. And the female vocals with actual strength are darn good.
Shark Island - Dangerous - this is SI's second song on this album and is actually a far dumber beast than the first. And in my mind it's always synonymous with the scene in the film where the song was placed. See the film for what I mean. But that's not do dis this fine, fine tune from one of the unsung gems of the times.
Bricklin - Walk Away - the wheels fall off for me on this one, can't really stand it much. Sorry.
Robbie Robb - In Time - Don't know much about this chap, but I can say that this tune doesn't really do much for me. At this point the casual listener is starting to think about skipping back a few tracks to replay Big Pig and Shark Island, or maybe even Tora Tora.
Power Tool - Two Heads are Better than One - Excellent, as the Wylde Stalyns would say. This fine and fun toe tapping tune rounds out the album nicely, saving it from an ignominous end. Great mindless stuff and that's meant as a compliment in this case.
Overall the production values on this CD are good, and some cracking tunes make you forget the mediocre stuff. Given the different music on display here it's hard to figure out how the compiler could of come up with a better way of arranging the tracks, but the fact that the bands are so different could in some ears detract from the experience a little, but for the casual hard rock fan, well your sure to find a couple of gems here to float your boat.
Lastly, if your on the cusp of buying this record because you liked the movie, then my advice is to jump right in and buy it, after all it's the fun vibes of the movie that will enhance your listening pleasure.
Cheap guitar thrills!!.......2005-07-27
Most of the music on this soundtrack is from bands that were preparing to release debut albums or from people "in the scene" at the time who cobbled together a band for fun.
Extreme has the first track here, which also appeared on their debut shortly thereafter in a slightly different form. Silly lyrics, absolutely killer guitar work by Nuno. The man absolutely shreds.
Glenn Burtnick is here. He is mostly a songwriter who has written hits for all kinds of people from Cyndi Lauper to Jo Dee Messina. A musician's musician, Jon Bon Jovi recruited him for the original inception of Bon Jovi in the early 80's. He puts together a nice, fun piece.
Shark Island was supposed to be big and therefore have 2 tracks here. For some reason they didn't make it but the songs are great.
The only other band worth mentioning is Power Tool. However you probably know them better from their massive hit album a couple years later called "After the Rain", recorded under the more familiar name of Nelson. Yup, the twin sons of Ricky Nelson with the flowing blonde locks. Their recording career started right here, folks.
Beyond that, it is what it is. Guitar rock for a teen movie from the 80's.
WYLD STALYNS!.......2005-04-09
This soundtrack to the famous teen comedy, "Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure" is a great CD. This is pure Wyld Stalyns music. The whole CD is nothing but non-stop Rock and Roll. Included in this soundtrack is an excellent selection of music to capture the late 1980s.
The greatest tracks included on this CD are: "Boys and Girls Are Doing It" by Vital Signs (song while Napoleon is having fun on the Waterslides). This is an OUTSTANDING party tune. Great riffs and pure genious lyrics. You only heard half of what a materpiece this song is during the movie. The next track, "Not So Far Away" by Glen Burtnik is a great rock ballad. Very nice lyrics and great melody.
A couple tracks later, you'll hear a Heavy Metal classic by Shark Island, "Father Time" (when Rufus is getting ready to go back in time). This tune rocks all the way through. For five minutes you hear the greatest array of guitar solos ever! This song is definitely a masterpiece. Another pretty good tune is "I Can't Break Away" (during opening of the movie) by Big Pig. This is a cool tune with some interesting keyboard sounds and the female vocalist is great. Finally, one of the greatest ballads of all time, "In Time" (when Bill and Ted visit the future) by Robbi Robb. Outstanding lyrics and a very loving melody. Ballads may not get any better than this.
For those of you that loved the movie, now own the phenomenal soundtrack. "Be excellent to each other and Party on dudes."

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Product Description
Well, here it is: Volume 1, the beginning of a series of the ultimate Swamp Dogg recordings. This double album contains the first two albums that he unleashed on the world in 1970 and 1971, ""Total Destruction To Your Mind"" and ""Rat On"". The music, the lyrics, and the cynicism are more apropos today than they were when originally released.

I finally hear him.......2005-07-05
I read about Swamp Dogg years ago in a book about unknown heroes of rock and roll. I finally thought to look for his stuff on-line and am pleasantly surprised. Most cult artists are cultish for a reason. Their musical styles and idiosyncracies may be hard to grab onto. Dogg is molded in sixties R&B. If you liked the horn arrangements behind, say, Otis Redding, you'll be right at home here. What made Swamp Dogg an outsider was his lyrics. He "tells it like it is," so to speak, from the position of a black man in America. I've recently gotten three of his CDs so I'm not sure which song is on what CD unless I go out to the car and bring them in here, but something like "F*** The Bomb, Stop The Drugs" is a good example. Catchy, too. There's another, a showstopper no doubt, "God Bless America For What?" which examines patriotism and racism. Besides the political, he deals with plenty of the usual stuff, relationships, infidelity. His take is fresh, even if some of these songs were recorded decades ago.
Soul Ain't Funny But This Dogg Laugh.......2000-06-29
Swamp Dogg is the souldenym of Jerry Williams, a songwriter, producer and all-around madman. This reissue of his first two albums, which contains precious little information about its contents, will give devoted soul music fans a good idea of the full-speed-ahead style of Swamp Dogg. "Total Destruction" dates from 1969 (originally released on the Canyon label) and "Rat On" from 1971 (Elektra). They're classics of the genre. Swamp Dogg went on to make great albums like "Gag A Maggott" (1973), and he released a good compilation called "Best Of 25 Years Of Swamp Dogg" a few years back, which contains some of his greatest songs, like "Complication #5" (about the last living human) and "Or Forever Hold Your Peace" (in which a man realizes that he has, umm, known quite well his son's future bride), as well as the masterful "Understanding California Women" ("She had on some shorts so tight/They wouldn't let her cheeks breathe"). That collection, while uneven, is worth checking out, as is the CD under review. Crazier than even Joe Tex and more, how you say it, conflicted, Swamp Dogg is an artist who needs a comprehensive reissue program. I saw him perform a couple of years back, in Nashville, and his version of "Sam Stone" cut John Prine's; Mr. Dogg is truly the last of the great soul men.
This cd deserves to be reissued.......1999-04-30
I like the music of Swamp Dogg very much and I'm loking for the songs "Synthetic world" "Dust your hair colour red" and "God blessed America" Please help me find them on cd.

Album Description
"Midnight Landing," is 10 Ft. Ganja Plant's second release on ROIR. Their first, entitled "Hillside Airstrip", was uniformly hailed by the music press. "Midnight Landing," at it's heart, is inspired by the recording processes of the great Jamaican studio bands of the 70's (and their American counterparts, Motown and Stax) where a song was potentially written, learned, and recorded in one session, with the band playing live on one track and then being voiced on the second track, with no regrets, and no apologies. Add to this ethos, some dubwise studio mastery and experimentation ("Chanting Nyabinghi", inspired by the African drumming style, is a creative departure and one of the best tracks they've ever cut) and you begin to get the picture.

Good. Reggae. Album........2007-03-25
A very palatable combination of instrumental, rock-steady, roots, and dub reggae with a somewhat Euro feel to it (think early Steel Pulse perhaps). One star deducted for some spotty production values (a bit of harshness to the mix, with some distortion that might even be intentional, i don't know).
Midnight Landing.......2005-03-06
Absolutely no originality to this album. I purchased "No Bed of Roses" along with this album and it's much better (no wonder with Reggae ace Style Scott leading the project). The whole tiime I was listening to Midnight Landing I thought that perhaps there will be one song anyway that made the purchase worthwhile, and I had to wait until the very last song to think "yeah, maybe that one." There was no compeling instrumentals on this album either and I really wish they would quite trying to imitate Augustus Pablo with that melodica. I won't blame previous reviewers who liked the album because I already had it before reading my first review, but sorry you people should try listening to Isreal Vibration or Misty In Roots if you really want roots music. I hope I like John Brown's Body better because I was actually looking for their Spirits All Around album when I found this one. (not an internet purchase this time). Too bad I can't return this one.
Amazing.......2004-02-27
I was surprised that I had never heard of 10 Ft. Ganja Plant's music because this album is quite good. Draws quite a close resemblance to South African Reggae. My favorite song is "Let the music hit"
Not as good as hillside airstrip.......2004-02-11
This new release is a let down compaired to their first album. The vocals are different and not as powerful. Althought they still have that strong and melodic rythem. I am still a huge fan but a little dissappointed
GOOD, BUT NOT HILLSIDE AIRSTRIP.......2004-01-16
For the second outing, the Plant came with a solid effort. They had nice riddims, but the grooves were deeper on the first album. It took a few listens this time for me to get into them, yet in the end they won me over. Still worthwhile.

!! Heavenly Voice !!.......2005-05-26
This CD has been my constant source of enlightenment for the last week. There are so many amazing aspects to her voice, and the "pure" title is very appropriate. The quality of sound is very pure, youthful and innocent in her voice.
This singer has full and detailed control over THREE OCTAVES and more, including all the saregam and decorative extended vocal techniques. It is not just showing off, either. The feeling of the music is always present.
Anyone who likes Indian raga MUST listen to this girl, who is the next in line of classical indian singers!

A Beautiful Muiscal Rendition of the Psalms.......2004-04-19
To some extent, the title of this collection PSALMS FOR THE SOUL is a bit oxymoronic. The psalms that are set to music in this collection are from the Bible, and therefore all psalms from scripture would be psalms for the soul, so to speak. I would imagine that the person who came up with the title was trying to market the recording to a broader public than just those who would purchase a religious CD and thought it would be catchy. But I digress and should not poke fun of the people of Naxos who do a tremendous service to classical music lovers by providing a wide variety of music at affordable prices.
This collection contains musical settings of the psalms. Some of the settings are anthems from the Anglican tradition. Other settings are more liturgical stemming from the Benedictine monastic tradition. Some of the settings are contemporary, others traditional. The Choir of St. John's under the direction of Noel Edison and organist Michael Bloss, performs the pieces with both beauty and reverence.
This collection is relaxing. It makes wonderful background music while concentrating and could also be used as in prayerful reflective settings as well.

I Love this CD -- Where Have You Been All My Life?.......2006-10-20
I never heard of this artist until a month ago. I read in another review elsewhere on Amazon.com that a qigong instructor used "Open Harp" for his qigong class. Because I practice qigong and because I'm fond of certain types of harp music, I did a search and listened to some "Open Harp" sound clips elsewhere on the internet. Sounded interesting, so I bought it. Well, I received it last week and it's been in constant play on my CD player ever since. I love it! Do you know how George Winston's meditative piano sounds in "December"? Well, "Open Harp" has the same effect as that "December" had on me twenty years ago. A classic yet oddly unique sound (to my ears, anyway). I appreciate that "Open Harp" has an elegant simplicity in sound which is meditative, but not morose. It's a great example of why I love certain types of harp music over most other forms of solo instrumentals -- the harp conveys soothing calmness without collapsing into sad melancholy the way the flute, piano and violin sometimes can. Soothing, meditative music doesn't have to mean "depressing," and "Open Harp" is a fine example of that fact.
No vocals here, just healing harp music throughout. Aside from the sheer pleasure of listening to it, I think "Open Harp" would serve well as background music for study, spiritual gatherings, birthing, and hospice work. Oh! Not to forget: qigong, too. It would appeal to anyone.
