Tuck Andress is a world-class guitarist, but he's also imbued with the rare gift of good taste. His musical partner and wife, Patti Cathcart, is an uncommonly soulful and inventive jazz stylist and among the best scat singers since Ella Fitzgerald. Together they create magic, a kind of jazzy chamber music that's deceptively simple on the surface but reveals layers of subtle complexity with each additional listening. Check out the faint echoes of flamenco on Andress's solo showcase "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" and the double-time bass runs he adds to Dan Hicks's "Walkin' One and Only." Or witness the grace notes Cathcart effortlessly drops into her dynamic vocals on "When We're Alone" and the breathless sensuality she brings to the Drifters' "Dance with Me" and Al Green's "Let's Stay Together." --j. poet

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars theyve got some good ol' rock n roll mixed with some new style metal.......2006-04-29

first off, i have to agree with what Sean said down below... These guys really dont belong on Trustkill, seeing as how all the scenesters out there ARE indeed picky about their "hardcore" and "metalcore" or whatever and this band just doesnt meet that criteria...

So, anyways, on to the cd! I personally loved it! It was that something different i was looking for at that time. Their guitars in some parts remind me alot of guitar parts from a thousand different songs, but thats just 1)me knowing too much music and 2)its hard to write stuff that nobody can relate to something else...

Their lyrics (which is always what i look at first, being a vocalist myself) are very... raw? their crude suggestive words may be offensive to some, probably more-so to the girls! I find the lyrics comical and fun though, because not many people will just come out and say some of the stuff they do, and i admire that.

The music in a whole, and the way they styled their songs is terrific! Its almost like a George Thorogood meets Every Time I Die thing, I love it! Not to hard for the old rock n rollers, and not to pansy for the new metal heads, its a nice in-the-middle band that must be recognized!

So, im giving them a 5 based on 3 things...
    1) album overlook (5) great job in piecing it all together
    2) lyrical value (5)haha, the lyrics are just crazy, id give a 6 if i could!
    3) musical ability (5) for what theyre doing, they all do it quite well!!!

    4 out of 5 stars Different..........2006-01-31

I think FP is diffent. I like the music, i think they play their instruments well, and they have their act together. I bought the cd the first day it came out and I listen to it all the time. The gils that are in their album cover are sexy.

    1 out of 5 stars wow...........2005-10-24

these guys pretty much suck. there really isnt more to say about them besides that. they are not creative and they suck at their instruments. i gave them a star because they actually took the time to record it.

5 out of 5 stars Like it or not Rock n' Roll is coming back.......2005-10-13

The only thing this band has against them is the fact that they got signed to trust kill. On a label with bands who bleed with the charecteristics of the hardcore/metal scene, such as bleeding through, it dies today and terror, they are a little out of place. All the kids in this scene are so picky with their music now that when a band with a new creative style comes about they instantly say it's terrible. They want the all to over used gross tough guy vocals and the heaviest breakdowns imaginable, regardless of how innovative and creative they are.

It's time we start to admit the fact that this scene is getting a little old and needs to start moving somewhere. Tons of the bands in this scene are still putting out great stuff but so much of it is the same. The music got old so now all the kids are doing with the scene is making it a fashion statement and a reason to mosh like a-holes so they can feel like they have a reason to listen to all these identical bands.

The scene needs something new. Music needs something new. When this rock n' roll phenomenon broke out 50 or 60 years ago people either embraced it or said it was something that would simply fade. Well it never really did fade until now when all bands in each genre are starting to do the same things. Musicians aren't being themselves any more because they're trying to impress which ever scene they're playing for. Their music is becomming passionless and this is something that should NEVER happen to music.

It's just reasently that certain bands are starting to break away from this and Fight Paris is definitly one of them. I wouldn't neccesarily give the CD five stars and say every song is perfect because that's not the case. However what the band is doing is so crucial to rock n' roll and bringing back the idea of being creative and trying new things and this is crucial and that's why I gave it five stars. In my mind its 100 times more crucial than some typical metal band putting out a perfect CD with consistent success in each track. These bands are getting scared to break away from the now nearly unbearable tradition because the reputations bands like Fight Paris are getting in the scene that's become so close minded maybe they don't belong in it any more.

Well then where do they belong?

Maybe a whole nother scene is needed. A scene that embraces this originality in music and rocking out against the constraints of the current scenes. Fight Paris needs to team up with bands like Every Time I Die (who's newest album Gutter Phenomenon may be the first big step to saving the true concept of rock n' roll), and my Chemical Romance who have remained unseduced by what the scene wants and possesses a style that is no one's but their own.

ETID's Keith Buckley says that music is not a competetion or a fashion statement but a chance to be yourself. We have bands like Underoath and Haste the Day pushing this reoccuring christian metal scene where it's clear in the way they play and in their lyrics that their far from as strictly Christian as they're trying to appear. They do this because for some reason that's what's in with the scene these days. All the tough guy bands are straight edge now, which sends out a good message to the kids, but have they all honestly never drank or done a single drug in their life? Who knows? but I'd be willing to bet that the answer is no.

Buckley also said that the world is full of filth and they're just embracing it. Isn't that what rock n' roll has always been about? It's not about being perfect (whether the medium be a Christian metal band or tough guy straight edge band) IT IS ABOUT AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN ABOUT SINGING ABOUT THE STUFF THAT MAKES SINNERS ACCEPTABLE AND EVEN... SINNING ENJOYABLE?!?!

Nobody is perfect and that's what these bands are trying to say. They're being themselves and if that means wailing out some naughty lyrics dripping with regret and the glory of being the life of the party they're doing it and it's great. It's exactly what we need.

The scene is getting old and we need bands like Fight Paris and Every Time I Die to save it. We need more and more bands to come along who aren't inspired by the music from bands like ETID and Fight Paris but are inspired by what they are doing and come out with more music that's straight from their hearts and completely original. The typical Trust Kill kids who think they no everything about the scene (and there's not all that much to know) are shunning fight Paris for their dirty southern style rap core rock n' roll. In reality it's originality is beautiful no matter how dirty the music sounds. It's a gift to music as a whole.

in short rock n' roll was never about everyone in the scene dressing the same, beating each other up, starting fights at shows, or being christian or straight edge. ROCK N' ROLL IS NOT ABOUT BEING PERFECT IN THE EYES OF THE SCENE YOU ARE PLAYING IN, IT'S ABOUT STEPPING OUTSIDE OF THE BOUNDS AND CREATING NEW AND CREATIVE SONGS THAT MAKE PEOPLE SHAKE WITH ANTICIPATION TO SEE WHAT BAND COMES OUT WITH WHAT NEXT, NOT ALREADY KNOWING EXACTLY WHAT IT IS GOING TO SOUND LIKE.

FIGHT PARIS, EITD, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE AND ANY OTHER BANDS OUT THEIR WHO HAVEN'T LOST THEIR SENSE OF ORIGINALITY UNITE! AND ANY UP AND COMMING BANDS DON'T BECOME LIKE EVERY OTHER BAND IN THE SCENE! BE YOURSELFS AND DO YOUR OWN THING!

BECAUSE WE NEED IT! GET TO THE TOP AND MAKE THE MUSIC DIRTY AND REBELLIOS BECAUSE WE'RE NOT PERFECT, AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT WE NEED TO ROCK ABOUT.

4 out of 5 stars CHECK THEM OUT!! .......2005-09-06

I HEARD THIS BAND A BIT BEFORE THEY CAME OUT. I LOVED WHAT I HEARD AND AS SOON AS IT COME OUT, I GRABED IT. I'M A BIG EVERY TIME I DIE FAN. AND IT'S TRUE THERE TRUSTKILL'S ETID WITH A LITTLE BIT OF THE BRONX SOMEWERE IN THERE. IT'S VERY UPBEAT, MAKES YOU WANNA GET UP A GO NUTS. NOW THERE LYRICS. THEY SUCK. THEY HAVE SOME CATCHY STUFF. BUT MOSTLY VERY BASIC,IT SOUNDS PRETTY AMATURE. BUT THERE MUSIC MAKES UP FOR THAT! I TOTTALY SUGGEST IF YOU LIKE BANDS LIKE EVERY TIME I DIE, THE BRONX, AND THE BLED. YOU SHOULD DEFINITLY OWN THIS ALBUM.

    HAVE A NICE DAY :)

this cd is really good my only critisim is not enough originals! its not that they doen;t do a great job on the covers they do! its that i;m tired of seeing critics hammer cd's with less originals, such as the latest victoria warne cd live at the savoy, a great live cd but i've read critics short change it for not having enough originals! missing the point of how great the cd is! same here, it seems like when the greats get old they get away with it not here! still a excellent cd by 2 great musicians!

5 out of 5 stars A new Michael Smith album - a reason to live!.......1999-09-16

This great collaboration between Michael Smith and Annie Hills is a must for Michael Smith fans and I would strongly encourage you to become one. "The Dutchman" and "Spoon River" are on Smith's great 1991 CD "Michael Smith", but I have been disappointed that two of Michael's best loved songs did not have better versions by him. This CD rights that wrong. "We Become Birds", previously done on Smith's 1994 CD "Time" in a soft, reflective mood, is redone here but joyful and upbeat. It turns out this song works either way. There are 7 new (or new to me) songs written by Smith alone or in collaboration with Hills, the late Steve Goodman, and others. I do not possess the gift for words to describe how good they ALL are. Suffice it to say I have seven new favorite songs. Add to that two penned by Hills, including "This Rain", which, replete with 12 string guitar and harmonica, invokes for me all the ambiance of sixties folk music, but without the annoying idealism. Polyanna meets reality. Michael Smith adds a nice touch with his ad-lib backup vocals during the chorus which lie somewhere on a line between a primal scream and a plaintive cry , but closer to the latter. If you like acoustic guitar singer/songwriters, with well crafted songs, simply but beautifully done, this is a great CD! Buy it!
