Poetry of Love
Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Angela Hagenbach Kansas City singer/songwriter, "Angela Hagenbach, is one of those rare jazz vocalists who finds more in a song than the composer penned. Certainly more than one finds on the lyric sheet. Like Sarah Vaughan or Shirley Horn, Angela Hagenbach inhabits a song, and breathes new life into her carefully selected material. "Poetry of Love" is the answer to the question, Where have all the great jazz vocal records gone?" writes Mark Bacon Producer/Host, Jazz After Dark and Pan American Rhythms, KRVS 88.7 FM, Lafayette & Lake Charles, LA.
In October 2003, Hagenbach toured Brazil with SRO concerts in Rio de Janeiro and Ilhabela where she previewed selections from her latest recording, Poetry of Love, due in stores, January 20, 2004. This star-studded disc features jazz legends Clark Terry and Jimmy Heath. Also appearing are Russell Malone, James Williams, Don Braden and others, along with her HOT Latin Jazz ensemble. Poetry of Love is now available at angelahagenbach.com.
Singing everything from swinging straight-ahead Jazz Standards, Blues, and original compositions to sensual rhythmic Latin Jazz, Angela was praised by Cadence Magazine and JazzTimes for her "...Immediately appealing voice and razor sharp intonation." Her 2001 Grammy nominated national debut, Weaver of Dreams, garnered three stars from Downbeat Magazine, and was an immediate radio success. Weaver of Dreams shot to number five on the Gavin Jazz Chart in just six short weeks.
Her professional music career was launched in 1990; by 1994 Angela released her critically acclaimed recording debut Come Fly with Me on Amazon Records®. Scott Yanow of LA Jazz Scene, described it as "Full of rhythmic fire." Showcasing her Latin side, Angela released Angela Hagenbach HOT Latin Jazz in 1995. "
There is nothing more beautiful than a mixture of styles. To our delight, Angela Hagenbach Hot Latin Jazz does it with assurance, taking advantage of every moment," praised Sergio Mielnizenko, Producer of NPRs Brazilian Hour. Patricia Meyers from JazzTimes applauded Feel the Magic, Angelas 1997 release, "She possesses an extraordinary range, excellent phrasing and a singular style." She also won rave reviews for her theatrical debut when she co-starred in Duke Ellingtons Sophisticated Ladies, presented in 2002 by The Theater League of Kansas City.
As a fashion model, Angela graced international runways and appeared in countless television and radio commercials and print advertisements. Hagenbachs talent again placed her on the international stage. Angela was twice chosen to represent the United States as a Jazz Ambassador to the world under the auspices of the United States Information Agency and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Her world tours included performances and workshops throughout Africa in 1998 and in Jordan, Israel, Palestine, Oman, Uganda, Ethiopia, India, Thailand and Malaysia in 2000. Festival performance highlights include opening for Ray Charles in France at the 2001 Jazz in Marciac and A Tribute to Louie Armstrong in 2002, with Laurent Filipe and the Cultur Porto Big Band to a SRO Porto, Portugal crowd.

Album Description
ANGELA HAGENBACH POETRY OF LOVE AMAZON RECORDS ARCD-2822 Singer/songwriter Angela Hagenbach bridges the gap between contemporary and classic jazz on Poetry of Love. The album includes ten tunes dealing with the many facets of romance on the star-studded disc featuring special guest appearances by Clark Terry, Jimmy Heath and others.
The music begins with Hagenbachs sensuous reading of Tell Me About It, the beautiful bossa by Michael Franks from his 1983 Passion Fruit date. This sexy rendering will popularize Hagenbach and her ensemble with a wider audience.
Angelas arrangement of I Cant Believe Youre In Love With Me is hip and playfully supported by the swinging Nat King Cole styled New York rhythm- section reminiscent of the sophisticated, unabashed pleasure seeking of the Cotton Club jazz era.
Bittersweet is an original poignant bossa nova, bridging two free verse poems into a single passionate lyric full of autumnal imagery, remarkably rendered by Hagenbach.
Tenor great Jimmy Heath joins Hagenbach and her east-coast rhythm section for a heartrending reading of the romantic classic Never Let Me Go.
Dark Dreams, another original and poem turned song a serpentine sonnet set to an Afro Cuban beat. A dream induced introduction swells into a swinging Latin line offering an innate perception of the lyric.
Trumpeter emeritus and master mumbler, Clark Terry is Hagenbachs very special guest on the Blues Are Brewin. Angela alternately eschews her usually superlative articulation to engage in a hilarious historic dialogue with the great C.T. The two manage to mangle the English language to great effect.
Cole Porters Ive Got You Under My Skin flirts rhythmically between Brazilian and straight-ahead sections and the overall mood of the music is alluring and begs to be heard again and again.
On You Keep Calling Me, another Hagenbach original, featuring a Pantoum poem (a Malayan interlocking form) over a Bahian afoxé rhythm. The end result floats over a modern melody reminiscent of the best of Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66.
Ironically, Angela takes one of that groups biggest hits, Michel Legrands Watch What Happens, and sings it as a medium straight-ahead swing rather than the popular bossa beat. An excellent vehicle for lyrical vocalizing and some fine scatting.
The date concludes with a slammin samba arrangement of It Might As Well Be Spring. It opens with a breezy vocal-pandiero-surdo introduction then the band joins in for a brilliant Brazilian finish to a very exceptional disc.
Mark Bacon, producer/host of Jazz After Dark, KRVS 88.7 FM, says, "Like Sarah Vaughan or Shirley Horn, Angela inhabits a song, and breathes new life into her carefully selected material. Poetry of Love is the answer to the question, Where have all the great jazz vocal records gone?"
Poetry of Love, Music, Angela Hagenbach, A Singer-songwriter with a caressing, lush, contralto voice, an extraordinary range with razor sharp intonation, excellent phrasing, a singular style and improvises with hip intelligence and an innate interpretation of the lyric., Brazilian Jazz, Jazz, Pop, Standards

"The innocence of my life releases the God I love everywhere." These are the words of Rumi, 13th-century poet and founder of the Whirling Dervishes of Sufism, as spoken by the mature and melodious voice of Rosa Parks. Her voice, American history, those words, intense longing: Power. In celebration of the human spirit, The Gift of Love is a recitation of the love poems of Rumi by Dr. Chopra and celebrity friends, including Madonna, Goldie Hawn, and Robert A.F. Thurman. Sensual Middle Eastern-influenced music backs the reading and provides breaks between sections such as "Love Drunk" and "The Light of Love." The Gift of Love is sincere and potent stuff, unafraid of the deep physical, spiritual, and mental hunger that Rumi's words not only taste, but roll about the tongue and swallow whole. --Paige La Grone

Pseudo spiritualism.......2007-06-05
This is a junk product, a "murder of culture" as one review (too) nicely put it. A group of pseudo spiritual characters gathered to stuff even more money into their already fat bank accounts. Madonna? Demi Moore? Topped by Shallow-ak Chopra? Gimme a break...
P.S. what the heck was Martin Sheen thinking?
WOW.......2007-03-27
amazin cd by the sexiest man alive: deepak!!!!!!!! a friend that i was trying to make more than a friend sent this to me-------i shivered when i heard it (no joke) you either "get" this cd or you dont. i guess i played it about 20 times-----its about universal love and you will never forget it if you "get" it..........
Breathtakingly beautiful.......2006-11-08
Deepak reading the exquisitely beautiful love poetry of Rumi, over tasteful dance tracks, supported by goddesses such as Madonna and Demi Moore... What else do you need to know?...
Embracing Rumi's Thought.......2006-04-28
The soundtrack of Aparna Sen's "Mr. and Mrs. Iyer" introduced me to the 10th century poet saint, Jalaluddin Rumi. I was so impressed with, "Kithe Meher Ali..." (lyrics in Hindi inspired by Rumi's work) that I immediately set out to buy his work. However, each time I tried to read the poetry, I was at loss of the lesson. As it sat on my book shelf for several years, I returned back to it recently to meet with the similar fate.
This time though, a wonderful email suggested that I should look for Dr. Chopra's "A Gift of Love" for guidance. Dr. Chopra and his friend enhance the message of Rumi through this compilation.
Packaging: It is an added bonus that the packaging of this product is quite appealing as well. There are two CDs included. CD 1: 35 poems recited by Chopra and his coterie of wonderful readers. CD 2: includes Chopra narrating the story of Rumi and Shams and his examination of the seven spiritual laws of love. (attraction, infatuation, communion, intimacy, surrender, passion, ecstacy).
To all those who wish to tread the path of Rumi's world, start here.
A Gift Of Love!.......2003-12-21
This CD is an absolute joy to listen to! It thrills your senses. It makes your skin tingle. It opens your heart to love, brings you closer to God, the universe and all beings.
Usually I buy a CD, listen to it a few times and then it sits and collects dust. But this one is different. If I have a stressful day or whatever, I come home and listen to this and in only minutes I feel the stresses of the day leave me. I feel more grounded and as a friend said, it has the ability to put you in a deep meditative state.
I would rarely give any CD 5 stars, but this one rates it easily and if you are at are familiar with Rumi - you know his words are profoundly deep and touching to the human soul.
Deepak, You out did yourself this time -- A Fan!

Music Poetry Romance.......2007-03-08
Don't be put off by the negative comments judge for yourdelf as I did. I found this by accident looking for some romantic music for my lady and that is exactly what I found. Now I need to see the film. The music conjures up such a feeling, relax listen and enjoy. Imagine moonlight skys, the sea gently lapping along the shoreline, candlelit dinners with the one you love. This will leave you with a warm feeling and if not then you will not know romance. The poetry is warm sensitive and well read, a bonus to the CD.
Il Postino (Le postier).......2007-02-01
Excellent album. En plus de la musique originale du film, plusieurs lectures de poëmes de Pablo Neruda par des acteurs et actrices de renom, sur fond musical.
True Romantic Cd - www.michaelpalmer.net.......2006-12-18
If you are a true romantic, you will love this cd, even IF you are not a fan of some of the famous stars who read the poetry - I know I am not a fan of most of these actors, but it does not take away from the excellence of this soundtrack. If you like this cd, please look at the tv series Beauty and the Beast cd. It is called "Of Love and Hope". It is a must have cd.
lovely!.......2006-09-07
The musical score is haunting without resorting to melancholy. It befits Pablo Neruda's timeless poems. Highly recommended, even if not all of the poetry readings are well executed.
WHAT DID THEY DO?!.......2006-04-01
What is this trash?! This film is beautiful but the soundtrack sucks big time. They should have used the actor who was playing Pablo Neruda to read the poems in ITALIAN! It's a beautiful and romantic language but no..they screw it up with actors from the U.S. OMG! I HATE JULIA ROBERTS! she makes the soundtrack even worse. I spit on this cd! believe me..I would so give this trash 0 stars but amazon doesn't allow it!

Customer Reviews:
What a gift!.......2006-10-17
This cd has made my drive to work so pleasant! Though there are admittedly, a few songs I usually (but not always) skip, I feel nearly religious about how wonderful the readings on this cd are, and find myself bringing up out of thin air during random conversations.
For me, the stand out pieces are "Shall I compare thee..." which is sung so beautifully, "Sweet love doth now invite..." (which, I saw that Sting has now recorded on his new album but it is a little dry), Juliette Stevenson's wonderful playfulness with her sonnet, Fiona Shaw's reading, and Ralph Fiennes' piece where his voice is full of sharp intensity.
My seven year old has that one memorized. It is something to hear.
I've also recommended this cd to people for whom Shakespeare is a particularly tough egg to crack. Every day you hear a new angle you hadn't picked up on nor considered before, and in the readers' light it becomes simple to understand.
Beautiful, well-chosen sonnets.......2006-08-24
The musical interludes did not really capture my attention vocally, except for Rufus Wainright's who gave the tune a nice style. The speakers had excellent voices and grasp of the material. I especially like Alan Rickman's, Juliet Stevenson's, Susanah Harker's, and Kenneth Branagh's readings. I recommend this CD especially if you are a Shakespeare fan.
RADA; Royal Academy of Deficient Actors when compared to Joe Fiennes.......2006-07-18
If you enjoy Shakespeare you will appreciate this recording of various sonnets performed by various English actors. Some are presented as musical pieces which seem forced and not enough time is allowed between readings,
HOWEVER, the most interesting aspect of the recording is that Mr. Fiennes, who was rejected by RADA as a student, is the only non-RADA graduate invited to participate in the recording.
Also , he is given the honor of performing the first and last selections. The reason why is obvious. His performance is so far superior to the others you wonder why they didn't just let him record the entire program.
I wish Alan Rickman................2006-04-28
I wish Alan Rickman would engage in more spoken word recordings - his voice is incredible. As another reviewer wrote I, too, bought this CD for Rickman alone, but the cd is great from start to finish. Now, if Alan Rickman would only record something like Edgar Alan Poe's poems! Could you imagine THAT voice doing 'The Raven', or 'The Bells'. Haunting! Absolutely haunting. Please Mr. Rickman (bended kneee) read this and indulge your many fans!
BTW: For those of you who enjoy Alan Rickman, he has recorded 'Return of the Native' by Thomas Hardy -- it is super!
The words, the voices, the music: amazing.......2006-03-17
O.k. I'll be honest: I got this CD because of Alan Rickman. However, in the short time I've had it, I've listened to the entire album, start to finish, probably a dozen times. Rickman is amazing with his recitation of Sonnet 130, which admittedly I've listened to more than any other, but Refus Wainwright also deserves mention for a beautiful musical rendition of Sonnet 29. Although I don't know who Henry Goodman is, his version of Sonnet 46 does such an excellent job of capturing the witty back and forth of the eye and heart at war. I was also pleased to see some names (and hear some voices) that I do recognize: Imogen Stubbs, Kenneth Branagh, John Hurt, Annie Lennox, Juliet Stevenson, and Ralph Fiennes--and that's just naming a few of the greats making an appearance on this CD. Finally, if you don't like any of the actors/musicians I've mentioned, you should buy this album just for the sonnets themselves. It's a must-have for any true Shakespeare fan.

Buy it!.......2001-03-10
Taylor Mali is by far the most dominant, original, and flat out boppin' slam poet. Every single one of his poems are filled with pizzaz and emphasis. Mali is not only the man when it comes to poetry, but is a damn good history teacher too. Buy anything of his that you can.
a different Taylor Mali..........2001-01-08
For those who haven't had the opportunity to see Taylor Mali perform, this CD is definitely a great introduction. For those who have seen him perform, it just might lend a different perspective on his work. Those pieces I'd heard performed at slams in the past, particularly "Totally Like Whatever", were somewhat disappointing for me on this CD. This is obviously a guy who thrives on competition and audiences, and the "live" versions of his poems are infinitely better because he really does come alive on stage. However, hearing his work performed without all the high drama of slam competition did give me a chance to appreciate the verbal nuances of his work in a way I hadn't in the past. He's a better and more versatile *writer* (not just slammer) than some people are willing to admit.
The greatest Ever.......2000-10-21
In a new form of poetry, slam, the mix of a great hip-hop type beat placed in the poems and the rap-style speech is a great mix, especially when the poet is sucha talented man and great person. For three years, i knew the poet from being a student of his, and forever will cherish the lessons he taught. As im sure all who had mr. mali will say, he is the best teacher with the greatest peronality you could ever meet. I have heard most of the poems and know the true excellence they display. I highly recommend this CD for anyone who enjoys spoken word and contemporary style music.

Album Description
The popular "Hitchhiker" books by the late Douglas Adams inspired the engagingly quirky score by Joby Talbot. In addition to the score, the CD features: "Shoo-Rah Shoo-Rah" by Betty Wright; "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)" by Al Green; "Magic Moments " from Perry Como; "So Long and Thanks for All the Fish" by Neil Hannon; "Careless Talk" and "Vote Beeblebrox" by Neil Hannon, Douglas Payne and Andy Dunlop; and "Reasons to be Miserable (His Name is Marvin)" by Stephen Fry.
Joby Talbot began writing and performing in the early '90s, working with artists such as Tom Jones, Paul McCartney, and producer Nigel Godrich. In 2000, his score to the primetime British comedy "The League of Gentlemen" won the Royal Television Society Award for Best Title Music. The British Film Institute commissioned Talbot to compose a new score for Alfred Hitchcock's silent classic "The Lodger." As a classical composer, he has worked with all the major U.K. orchestras and has been commissioned by the prestigious BBC Proms Festival.

ah-HA ... Quite a pleasure, really. .......2006-03-05
.
If you enjoyed the movie [and we will assume that you did since you're here] you will love this soundtrack! It's got Everything!
Much of the work is orchestral. Some of it is techno. There are a couple of pop tune, and Perry Como [it works, trust me].
The Opening Theme "So Long and Thanks for All the Fish" is a gloriously funny show tune. It was funny on screen, but here you can pick out the lyrics. It's even more fun when you can sing along.
It's got the theme from the original radio play "Journey of the Sorcerer", banjo and all. [so did the movie].
Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is mellow enough to blow your mind.
"Huma's Hymn" about the Coming of the Great White Handkerchief is nothing more then Holy.
The "Planet Factory Floor" is ...Well, it's just plain Huge!
And Stephen Fry rapping. Stephen Fry, Man!! Reginald Jeeves of "Jeeves and Wooster" fame! If you are familiar with Stephen Fry, then the absurdity of him rapping makes this even more fun to listen to. He does the last track called "Reasons to Be Miserable (His Name is Marvin)", and he pulls it off so well!
It's enough to make you want this album!
A Pleasant Surprise.......2005-11-12
The Hitchhiker's Guide movie, for all its stupendous obserdity, had a surprisingly good score that one doesn't usually find in a comedy.
The silly tracks are in there too, and they're just as entertaining as the more traditional stuff. I love the music that is emitted from the Guide; its digital tones sound like a cell phone (except way less annoying and way cooler). Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is really awesome; it's like chilled Guide techno.
The slower tracks are equally nice. Tea in Space, Love, The Whale, and Space are all so simple and very pretty.
Then there are a few scores that are really big and just plain awesome. So Long and Thanks for All the Fish (and the intro about dophins) is so hysterical...I love how it's all put together. The Journey of the Sorcerer is fantastic. The only thing that's different about this version from the film is the addition of drums, but it's not a bad change at all. Planet Factory Floor is filled with such wonder and hugeness that's perfect for Magrathea. It's followed by the equally awesome Earth Mark II.
The only thing I didn't like about this CD was the addition of
Reasons to Be Miserable (His Name is Marvin). It was just....annoying and incredibly bad. But it's at the end of the CD, so I just don't listen to it. Not a big problem.
If you've seen the movie and enjoyed the music, this CD is definitely worth it. Who knew a comedy could have such epic music in it?
That's It --- I'm Voting for Beeblebrox!.......2005-11-03
By now, you've probably seen the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" movie in a theater, or at least on DVD (if not both.) Now check out the movie's amazing soundtrack.
The two major standouts of this album in my opinion are "Journey of the Sorcerer" and "Vote Beeblebrox." Anyone who's more than a casual fan of "Hitchhiker's" will immediately recognize "Journey of the Sorcerer" as the classic "Hitchhiker's" theme by the Eagles played on both the radio and television versions and now the movie as well. This version is enhanced and sounds great. It was a treat hearing it at the theater and it's awesome on this CD as well. "Vote Beeblebrox" --- I about died laughing when I heard this one. This is a sort of campaign song for Zaphod Beeblebrox that unfortunately never made it into the movie. "Don't believe the rumors / don't believe the vicious lies" it says, talking about how Zaphod isn't stupid. It continues in this vain with a hilarious spoken part from Zaphod saying that he "y'know, just wants to say all the things that presidents say, y'know." Has to be heard to be believed.
Following close behind these are definitely both versions of the wondrous "So Long and Thanks for All the Fish." Personally, I prefer the second version, a sort of upbeat lounge number, but both are great. "So long and thanks for all the fish / So sad that it should come to this / We tried to warn you all, but oh dear."
This album also includes a couple of what I guess could called Golden Oldies --- "Shoo-Rah! Shoo-Rah!" and "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)." Of these two, I thought "Shoo-Rah! Shoo-Rah!" was definitely better and more fun.
The bulk of the CD is the instrumental tracks from the film. Composed by Joby Talbot, these tend to suit the scenes they come from well. Enjoy some memories from the movie, or just enjoy listening to the music.
Finally, one last thing to mention --- "Reasons to be Miserable (His Name is Marvin)." Performed by Stephen Fry, this is a redo of a song by "Marvin himself." Wanna know what it's like to be Marvin? "In everything he has to do, he finds the world condemning / If he had his time again, he'd rather be a lemming." Yep, that Marvin's sure depressed (and depressing), but the song is fairly fun to listen to.
So long, that's all.......2005-10-01
When I saw the film and heard that catching tune "So Long & Thanks For All the Fish" I immediately decided to have this soundtrack, no doubt. So I rushed to buy the recording and, well brother you've bet, I fell in love with the whole disk. Get this, now, today! You won't be disappointed! You're gonna love the title song!
Zarquad! What A Hoopy Soundtrack!.......2005-06-02
Joby Talbot's score for the film version of the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy is phenomenal. I mean, wow! Really incredibly phenomenal! I mean, you may think Danny Elfman's score to Spider-Man 2 was phenomenal, but that's just peanuts to this score! Okay, I may be exaggerrating a bit, but that should not distract from the fact that this is a great score for a wonderful film. Not only does the music work well with the film, but I would suggest it as a companion to other versions of the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy you may come across. Try listening to it while reading one of the books, for instance. Or playing the text adventure from Infocom.
Some notable points:
The introduction about Dolphins, read by Stephen Fry, who of course played the voice of the Book in the film. And of course, the brassy, Broadway-style show-stopping musical number "So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish" which serves as a wonderfully ridiculous setpiece for the opening credits. The melody appears several times throughout the score, usually whenever Arthur or Trillian are thinking of Earth. It is also reprised as a slow, jazzy, lounge singery song during the first part of the closing credits.
The cue from when the Vogons destroy the earth, which is appropriately tense and dramatic, and climaxes with a panicked-sounding string section playing imposibly high, abrubt notes, and ends abruptly as the earth is destroyed.
To fans of the original radio and TV series, I say to you Don't Panic, because Bernie Leadon's "Journey of the Sorcerer" (Which, for those of you that don't know, served as the theme to both the TV and radio series) is on the soundtrack with a faithful and reverent arrangement, complete with banjo. It is one of my favorite tracks on the album, and I listen to it along with the following track, which shares its name with the film's title, and the title of one of the most wholly remarkable books in the universe: The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy.
Another great track is the music for the whale that is suddenly called into existance over the planet of Magrathea. It is filled with unwarranted optimism, and pathos, and gives the scene the necessary emotional edge, which I think is something Douglas Adams himself would have enjoyed immensely, since he created the whale in response to cop shows where innocent bystanders are meaninglessly killed as a result of conflicts or car chases that they had nothing to do with, and the audience doesn't care about them since they were only on the screen for two seconds. So Douglas wanted to create a character who would only exist as a character for a very short time, but make him extremely sympathetic so the audience would feel actual emotion when he is killed. And it works, and has worked in every version of the Hitchhiker's Guide I've been exposed to.
Another great track is "Huma's Hymn", which sounds so authentically like a church song that you could swear you'd be able to find it in your church's song book. (But you won't, so don't go looking for it.) As I understand it, most of the chorus singing the song consists not of professional singers, but of fans and other random people who happened to be walking by the church where the song was recorded, to give it that extra level of authenticity that other filmmakers probably wouldn't care about.
Overall, this is a very evocative and wonderfully fantastic score. Mr. Talbot displays much originality, but at points seems to channel other great composers of SciFi movie music. I hear traces of John Williams' scores for the Star Wars films and Superman the Movie, Jerry Goldsmith's Star Trek: The Motion Picture, James Horner's Star Treks II and III, and even Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy soundtracks. Just listen to track 8 and you'll see what I mean.
Just so you know, there are three tracks that are not part of the score of the film. I suppose you could call them "Pop" tracks, but they're not tracks that have been popular in the past 10 years, at least. Only one of them: Perry Como's "Magic Moments" was in the film, at least that I could tell. It was used as source music twice, once in the pub near the beginning, and once near the end. That's all I can say about that without spoiling the movie for anyone who hasn't seen it. (And if you don't recognise the name of the song, it's been used in several movies, so you've probably heard it before.) The other two songs are Betty Wright's "Shoo-Rah! Shoo-Rah!" and Al Green's "Here I Am (Come And Take Me)". While the inclusion of these songs on an otherwise orchestral soundtrack may seem odd, they definitely fit the film. Even if "Shoo-Rah! Shoo-Rah!" and "Here I Am (Come And Take Me)" don't appear in the film, you can imagine that they'd be the next songs to be cued on the jukebox in the pub near the beginning of the film, and so they help establish the mood for the scene. Some fans may be surprised or disappointed in the non-inclusion of Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World", but if you see the film, you will see that the scene during which that song played in the radio and TV series is not in the film. But no biggie, if they make a sequel (and there's no reason they shouldn't) perhaps that scene will make it in.
Overall, I'd say that this is a soundtrack that no fan of the Hitchhiker's franchise should be without. So buy it now, before the earth is demolished to make a hyperspace bypass!

Customer Reviews:
Missed opportunity (but still essential).......2005-10-25
Why are there so many tracks on disc 1 that are readily available on the Sax Pax for a Sax CD? It's too bad more of the impossible to find recordings from this period couldn't have been included instead.
Otherwise, it is great to finally hear some of this material and the disc 2 live concert is a treasure. All things considered, a bargain and a must for Moondog devotees.
Also note the packaging is very attractive -- but unfortunately on my copy, the binding/glue is already falling apart so the CD trays have seperated from the cover... sometimes plastic is a better way to go...
Moondog's last concert!.......2005-10-12
This is a professional production of an official double disc set that was released in 2004 (5 years after Hardin's death.) It looks good and has 44 enclosed pages of valuable information about Moondog, such as a detailed biography, discography, Moondog's own words about the recordings, personnel listings, lyrics, pictures and a poem that Leonard Bernstein wrote to and about Moondog.
Also seeing quotes of Benny Goodman and Frank Zappa praising Moondog's music is particularly exhilarating for a Zappa fan like myself (I had no idea.)
The first disc consists of already released material, most of which I already owned when I bought this set. This disappointed me a bit, as I'd expected additional versions of these titles provided on the back.
The set is called "The German Years," but includes 5 tracks that are taken from "Sax Pax for a Sax" - an album that was recorded in England and performed by English musicians, and consists mainly of material that was written while Moondog lived in New York. Other albums that songs have been taken from are "H'art Songs" (4 tracks,) "In Europe" (4 tracks,) "Elpmas" (4 tracks,) "A New Sound of an Old Instrument" (3 tracks,) "Big Band" (1 track) and "Bracelli" (1 track.)
The 56 minute long disc #2 is the essential music in this set as it consists of only previously unreleased material. It is Moondog's last concert, which was recorded in France on August 1st, 1999 (less than 6 weeks prior to his passing.)
The concert, which consisted of both rare and recent material, was performed on solo piano by Dominique Ponty. At times Moondog joins in on bass drum, and here and there he recites a few couplets - a nice treat. But as always, when it comes to live recordings of solo piano performances, we have to deal with intruding sounds; aside from applause we get a few hundred coughs, a squeaking door that repeatedly opens and closes, at one point the barking of a distant dog, at one point the sirens of an ambulance driving by the recording location, and believe it or not - audience members trying to clap along to one of the solo piano canons! ...but overall the sound quality is very good and clear.
I'd recommend "The German Years 1977-1999" to Moondog fans (who haven't heard his last concert,) but to people who aren't familiar with his work, this might not be the optimal place to start.
Late Moondog.......2005-04-27
When Louis Hardin moved to Europe in 1974, he was received as visiting royalty -- unlike his home country who treated him as some sort of one-joke street-performer. For the next 25 years, until his passing in 1999, he produced an astonishing variety of music for organ, brass band, voice, piano, percussion, small chamber ensemble, and string quartet.
Disc one of this collection contains an anthology of his German recordings, and presents a clear advantage over the originals in that every track is on a different instrument. The listener never gets a chance to grow weary of any one style, allowing you instead to concentrate on the commonalities running through all of Hardin's music. As a sampler of the work done in his senior years (ages 61-83) it's a remarkable collection showing verve, inventiveness and playful iconoclasty.
Disc two presents his last concert, previously unreleased, from Arles France on August 1st 1999, just five weeks before his death. Pianist Dominique Ponty, who I believe is the daughter of famed violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, plays 34 of his pieces for piano or arranged for piano. Louis 'Moondog' Hardin himself accompanies her on tambour, a big skin drum, on several of the tunes, and recites six couplets in his rich ageless baritone.
Also included, a 44-page booklet of photos, notes, lyrics and critical comment. This is a first-class production for one of the last century's most enduring and original composers.

Nokturnal Mortum Again Achieve Perfection.......2005-09-25
Making a perfect album is damn near impossible to do, but this is the second of their 3 absolutely breathtakingly perfect cds (the others being Goat Horns and Weltanschauung).
This is a re-release of older material but it still holds up amazingly well. Great guitars and astonishingly gorgeous keyboards. Just listen to Perun's Celestial Silver. That is one of the greatest songs ever made. Their cover of Return Of The Vampire Lord is another perfect track.
If you havent gotten this cd yet, buy it now! You sure as hell wont regret it!
Just as Good, if not Better Than "Goat Horns"!.......2005-03-14
Well, NM did it again, and amazed me with another prime slab of symphonic/folk black metal. While "Goat Horns" suffered from a crude production, "Lunar Poetry" utilizes a clearer production, but maintains a "distant" atmospheric sound, especially in the vocals. Everything here was mastered from the original mCD, which was recorded on analog. So here, you have a more classic, warm production, with the classic tape hiss and everything. Some may complain about the tape hiss, but I think it adds that much more to the ancient feel of this album. Varrgoth's vocals are more in the traditional BM style here, though he does some strange chanting every now and then. (But especially on "Autodafe/Barbarian's Dreams".) The guitars play a bigger role here, and often harmonize together, and even solos pop up every now and then, but the keyboards are just as essential as they ever could be in NM's awe-like soundscape. First off, there is much more of a folk influence in the music here, and I guess you could say it's "heavier".
Where "Goat Horns" gave listeners visions of starry summer nights, "Lunar Poetry" portrays a more sorrowful and dreamy atmosphere, especially with the guitar work and ritual chanting vocals. Rather than visualizing a full moon riding over the plains, you get more of "wintery" vibe from this album. Listening to this would make you swear you were in the mountains on a bleak and cloudy winter night. I appreciate this type pf atmpshere that is portrayed, so I guess you could say I prefer this to "Goat Horns", though they are both supreme albums in the field of extreme metal.
Nokturnal Mortum's most famous track is on here, "Perun's Celestial Silver". It is absolutely beautiful and stunning! It has the depressing folk melodies, an absorbing atmosphere, and is probably one of the best songs on the album. "Carpathian Mysteries" is another favorite of mine with its beautiful guitar harmonies, and the war-march of "Ancient Nation" must be heard. But for me, the high point comes with "Autodafe/Barbarian's Dreams". The song plays out like a story, shifting through several extravagant melodies before breaking down into the final cycle of dream-like keys and cutting off into tape hiss. Breathtaking...
Like any other NM release, I would reccommend this to fans of symphonic black metal, or even Viking metal. A top-notch CD. Buy this along with "Goat Horns" and Summoning's "Stronghold".
Majestic Black Metal Brilliance!!.......2004-07-19
This is the first album ive ever picked up by nokturnal mortum and im shocked...these guys are amazing. From the first notes of 'tears of pagonism' you know this is gonna be a dark and majestic album. The songs are very very well written, way beyond most black metal acts abillity. I would recommend this to any fan of true black metal. \m/
Majestic Black Metal Glory.......2003-10-09
Hailing from the Ukraine, Nokturnal Mortum has become one of the most talked about acts in the Black Metal scene as well as the National Socialist Black Metal (NSBM) scene. Lunar Poetry, their second album, has become one of the most influential and beautiful Black Metal albums around. Melodic guitars and majestic keyboards make this album a true tribute to the solemn moonlit sky on a winter night. Simply breathtaking.
Tears Of Paganism (a short, melancholic keyboard intro) starts off Lunar Poetry leading right into the title-track. Blasting drums and Black Metal rasps fill your mind with the memory of ancient Pagan nights of worship and pride. Following the title-cut comes one of the most elegant and beautiful songs I've heard: Perun's Celestial Silver.
Perun's Celestial Silver begins with a folk-inspired keyboard melody taking you far away into a land of thought and landscape. After the minute intro guitars kick in and now you are off into some of Black Metal's most glorious moments ... Embrace it while you can. From raging, haunting melodies to majestic winter imagery, Perun's Celestial Silver possesses it all. And to think this is only the beginning...
Like a storm gathering in the sky, Lunar Poetry continues on building and building thoughts and peace in your mind. From the inspiring folk-melodies of Ancient Nation to the war-march of The Grief Of Oriana, prepare to experience perfection.
Autodafe/Barbarians Dreams closes the album in the same vein as Perun's Celestial Silver. Powerful folk influences, beautiful soundscapes and tear-provoking melodies, this song once-again capture's the true essence of Nokturnal Mortum. At about four and half minutes into the song you will be taken to the closing of the album: A keyboard melody that truly is one of the most beautiful I've heard. Building on the melody is added piano and drums as well as Knjaz's whispers in the quiet, silky night.
May I say it once again ... Perfection.

Customer Reviews:
Some of the songs are great........2006-07-17
Don`t get me wrong, I highly recomend this record, but there are too many songs on this album that simply aren`t good enough to justify a rate of five stars. Having said that I`m sure that if you think this album sounds interesting you will probably like it. What you will find on this record is what the cover says: Japanese people playing western music. Some sing in japanese some in english.
