Restless
Editorial Reviews

Less instrusive than real jazz but more energetic than new age, simply constructed but exquisitely performed, James' pop confections are the perfect background music. On this album, James favors acoustic piano over synthesizers (though he uses both) and he employs a shifting cast of supporting musicians. His daughter Hillary James is the sweet-voiced if predictable lead singer on the wispy ballad, "Storm Warning." She joins Luther Vandross for the harmony vocals buried in the mix on "Under Me." Michael Brecker plays strong but simplistic tenor sax lines on that and two other songs. Titles like "Lotus Leaves," "Back to Bali" and "Awaken Us to the Blue" are meant to conjure up a certain romanticism, but they seem no more exotic than airline ads on TV. --Geoffrey Himes

So many songs- so many old friends.......2007-05-28
I totally agree that Restless Heart sounds like Little Texas. Too funny...but I have always found I confuse their music.
Anywho....this is a great compilation CD. Restless Heart has some great tunes on here that I had totally forgotten about. From the hit That Rock won't roll- which just makes you want to dance, to the most touching of songs like Long Lost Friend with the sharp piercings sounds of heartbreak. Dancy's Dream has always been a favorite of almost anyone who is a RH fan, and it includes the sweet I'll still be loving you.
There are a whopping 16 songs on the CD with very little filler. There were songs here i never realized belonged to them, or had forgotten all together- like Why does it have to be wrong or right....what a fun song!
Not a great compilation of their best hits.......2006-02-19
Can anybody explain how "Til I Loved You" got left out of this compilation? Where is "Wheels"? I think "Mending Fences" would have made more sense than the inclusion of the last two songs. Save your money and download the tunes you want from elsewhere - this cd isn't worth the price, and is hardly all of Restless Heart's greatest hits.
Not Necessarily Country, But They Still Sound Great.......2005-02-27
I really wouldn't classify Restless Heart as a typical country group. Let's face it, when I hear the name "Restless Heart," I don't categorize them with country staples such as the Statler Brothers, Oak Ridge Boys, or even Alabama. I do see them fitting in somewhere along the lines of Little Texas and the Desert Rose Band, however.
This album is a great compilation for the casual fan and the hardcore Restless Heart listener. It includes all of their biggest radio hits like "The Bluest Eyes In Texas," "I'll Still Be Loving You," and "Why Does It Have To Be." It bridges the time when Larry Stewart was in the group to the time that he was out of it. The biggest hits minus Stewart are here("When She Cries" and "Dancy's Dream"). For some reason, "Mending Fences" is left off of this compilation, but I'll live.
I managed to see this group minus Stewart a few years ago when they were supporting their "Big Iron Horses" album. They were excellent. Their appeal was evident in the crowd that night, what with everyone from cowboys to preppies and even a few bikers roaming around.
Restless Heart was one of those groups who just played their own style of music. It wasn't really country, but then again, it really wasn't adult contemporary either. They snuggled up to both crowds and did it without changing their style. They didn't become popsters like Faith Hill because it brought in more money. They didn't have to change because they believed in their own music. That's a rare quality in the country scene these days, and I commend them for sticking to their guns.
Get this album if you enjoy groups like Little Texas, Desert Rose Band, maybe even the Eagles. Also, I think Diamond Rio and Nitty Gritty Dirt Band fans can appreciate these guys as well. Check them out.
Don't have to be a country fan for this.......2005-01-06
If you were to take a look, if you're not too busy, at my About Me page, or my reviews, you would quickly find out that I am a rock/metal guy. Country music just doesn't fit in there all that much. But my metal heart will always have a place for Restless Heart.
Growing up in the 80s, at my grandparents, they used to play country radio stations back when [country radio stations] played more traditional country music (traditional compared to today's pop-country), and Restless Heart could easily be heard on any given day. Basically, I grew up with most of these songs in the background of my life, at home, in the car, everywhere. And though I wouldnt call myself an avid RH fan I do know that this is some of the greatest music you will ever hear, in any genre of music. The melodies are of Eagles-esque variety, with tradional country and some pop music in just the right amounts. You can't explain how these songs come together so well, they just do and it's perfect. Vocalist Larry Stewart (and later John Dittrich, the drummer, who does a FANTASTIC job on "When She Cries" and "Tell Me What you Dream")give this great music a voice that soars and harmonizes. All I can say is that these songs take me back to my carefree days (yeah, I'm serious) and it's a great moment to be in. You have to love thier melodies.
Now about this compilation. What you get here is pretty much every RH song you need if you are only a passing fan such as myself. I would have liked to have seen "New York (Hold Her Tight)" on here but this is still a very solid collection by a very talented band. You also get some bonus unreleased tracks, my favourite being "No End To This Road" so all in all you get a great compliation for your hard earned dollar. Now put that dollar to some good use and pick this up. 13/16
phenomenal harmonies.......2004-11-23
I'm typically a bit of an old guy when it comes to music. I'll take Haggard over Chesney any day. So I shouldn't technically be writing to support a group that is more pop than country, but I am. I saw Restless Heart live recently, and their harmonies are the best in the business. The cuts on this greatest hits collection tend to sound over-produced, because the harmony makes the music sound so BIG... but it sounds the same in person, and I find that remarkable. These guys won my respect, and they're certainly responsible for some of the biggest crossover hits in the pre-Shania era. It's just good music.

On their first releases, even amid all the smirking irreverence, the Replacements seemed to have more ambition than other post-punkers, but it wasn't until Let It Be that they actually realized it. There's still plenty of smirking here--"Seen Your Video" is a great snotty taunt--but there's also smartly-crafted pop like "I Will Dare" and not-quite-love songs like "Answering Machine," not to mention a rocking cover of uncool Kiss that's played perfectly straight. This is classic, all-over-the-board indie rock, especially the angst-ridden empathy of "Sixteen Blue," where Paul Westerberg, all of 23, remembers just how it is to be a teenager. --David Cantwell

Customer Reviews:
"I ain't gonna never change" (* * * * 1/2).......2007-01-07
Let It Be is not as consistent as its follow-up, Tim, but it contains more of the band's best songs than that album does. It also contains filler in the worst sense of the word, but that is forgivable since it is surrounded by wonderful hardcore and straightforward rockers, as well as sincere acoustic guitar and piano based-ballads.
"I Will Dare" - featuring old-timey guitar and even a mandolin - and "Favorite Thing", also with a twangy guitar, are cleaner (but hardly pristine) updates of their earlier sound. After these opening tracks, the band revisits that earlier sound with the album's hardest-rocking numbers, "We're Coming Out" and "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out". (The latter provides two minutes of comic relief, but it's too bad that Westerberg stumbles over the lyrics in the second verse.) Following these four rockers, the rest of the worthwhile tracks are basically ballads, and are just as good and sometimes better than the disc's rock songs. "Androgynous", which follows on the heels of "Tommy", is a stunner. Musically, it is shoved along by a weeping piano. Lyrically, it vividly portrays the desolate streets of a small Midwestern town, where anything other than stiflingly normal is suspect: "Kewpie dolls and urine stalls/Will be laughed at/The way you're laughed at now". (I am originally from such a town, so I know what I mean.) This song shows the influence of the more haunting moments of the Big Star record Third/Sister Lovers. The acoustic "Unsatisfied" and the electric "Answering Machine" makes Westerberg's influence on the alternative scene that blossomed in the early 90s blatantly obvious.
The album is not perfect, of course. "Seen You're Video" and "Gary's Got a Boner" are the previously mentioned offending filler. The cover of Kiss's "Black Diamond" isn't terribly bad, but it isn't terribly inspired, either. Finally, "Sixteen Blue" is often praised for its portrayal of "the hardest age". Granted, it makes some accurate enough observations, but as a song, it isn't really anything special (except for Bob Stinson's cool fade-out guitar). This is one of several songs on the disc that indicate that Westerberg was looking to his teenage years for lyrical inspiration. However, the Kiss cover and Ted Nugent riff on "Gary's Got a Boner" suggest that he and Stinson may have relied too much on their teenage record collection for musical inspiration. Nevertheless, there are several more palpable points of reference, too, such as the New York Dolls, Alex Chilton (duh), and that other Minneapolis post-punk outfit, Husker Du.
I was only 8 years old when Let It Be was released, and too into classic rock when my high school classmates got into The Replacements via Paul Westerberg's solo work. For both reasons, I don't have any memories of listening to the band when I could have really related to their songs. In fact, I didn't really start listening to them until I was in my late 20s. The fact that they can be appreciated so many years after the fact is evidence of the timeless quality of their songs, and proof that they were as responsible for albums that were as essential to the 80s as those by American peers such as Husker Du, R.E.M., and The Pixies.
Why We Remember This Band.......2006-09-27
The Replacements are probably one of the greatest hidden treasures to be dug out of the 80s. They were a band that could easily have been shoved aside, but those of us who found what made this band great, we knew they could never be forgotten or put to the bottom of any pile.
Granted, The Replacements were dirty, nasty, drunken, and did about as much to destroy their fame that they could. And sure, on half of this album, one can hear a band that surely were quick and dirty and had a devil may care attitude and perhaps the listener could be forgiven for asking why should we care too? These songs are at the best just simple fun and at their worst a dirty joke that isn't funny or even boring.
However, there is that other half of the album which is why we remember this band. The fact is, Paul Westerberg could be brutally honest and sometimes showed us the pain he felt which was the pain we all felt. All the posturing to be tough boys on tracks like "We're Coming Out" is quickly forgotten with "Androgynous", which he looks at the social outcasts and wonders why they are laughed out when all they've done is dropped one of the seperators in the world.
Towards the end of the album, they drop "Sixteen Blue", which in 4 minutes puts the social awkwardness of being a teenager onto the track, the whole too old to be a kid but too young to be an adult. Anyone could write "Everything's sexually vague" but who else could follow that with "And you wonder to yourself that you might be gay"? That track alone shows us why people love this band. Paul Westerberg had something to say about being human.
This album is a perfect split between mindless fun songs and deep introspective songs. They hadn't dropped that dirty riotious attitude that they were infamous for, and they were beginning to show off that introspection that they became one of the greatest rock bands for. Purely, one of the greatest albums ever.
wanna hear a little bit of gossip?.......2006-05-24
okay, okay, okay: everyone knows this is a classic garage/punk/whatever album. of course it is. buy it! but i've heard some information about the band itself that you may find interesting: it seems that back in the day, when they made this album, they consumed alcoholic beverages to a degree that was not entirely healthy for young men. somehow, despite this behavior, they still made great rock 'n' roll records. go figure!
Every current so-called punk band owes thier careers..........2006-05-06
To these guys! Goo Goo Dolls, Green Day, etc...This is the blue print for you guys. What else can you say about "The Replacements" except this is pure genius and pure rock and roll. Anyone that doesn't own one of their albums just doesn't like music. They were the best band of the 80's. I think I've listened to "Unsatisfied" about 100 times in my lifetime and get goosebumps everytime!
Possibly the finest punk / Alternative record ever.......2006-04-02
The Replacements were one of the 5-10 greatest rock bands ever. This is arguably their greatest album.
Their entire career (1981-1991) was sadly during the era when radio was dominated (obliterated..) by the retro "Classic Rock" format. As a result, the 'Mats were never heard by most people. Their legacy is the dozens of major bands who, by their own admission, owe part or all of their sound to the influence of the Replacements ( including: Nirvana, Wilco, Goo Goo Dolls...)
If you are a fan of punk, grunge, or Alt Rock, you should own this record.

Sara Evans's 2000 effort, the platinum-selling Born to Fly, put her in the front ranks of the most promising of modern country singer-songwriters. As a woman with a strong traditional background, she found a way to marry contemporary sounds and sensibilities with her bedrock country and bluegrass history, and, with the help of producer Paul Worley, delivered a complete, believable, and very fetching record. But Restless sounds as if she and Worley just went in and cut a passel of songs. A lot of them carry a message of hope, of making "something magic out of something frightening," as she sings in "Rockin' Horse," one of five tracks she co-wrote. But most of them just sound as if she had getting on radio more in mind than anything else. It's hard to tell if the album doesn't know what it wants to be, or if it's Evans who's confused. Worley over-produced the majority of it with unnecessary layers and busy arrangements, and the repertoire ranges all over the place, from an awful attempt at swaggering R&B ("Big Cry") to the hay-bale-and-pickup milieu of "Suds in the Bucket." While the languid and affecting "Backseat of a Greyhound Bus" sticks in the memory and the sensual "Otis Redding" gets the hormones charged, too many of the songs just roll by. Evans remains a wonder of a singer, however, whether she's projecting her clearer pop voice or calling on the nasality of her Missouri barn-dance-and-bluegrass training, something in too short supply on this uneven effort. --Alanna Nash

Pick Up .......2007-07-02
Sara picked up the pace in her 4th album to good effect. This is the album of hers that I first heard and that got me interested in her. Sara recovered energy and tempo in this album in comparison wiht "Born to Fly." There are a number of good songs that serve as the pillars of this album, with very presentable songs in between. A strong 4 stars. Some worthy songs:
Rocking Horse
Back Seat of a Greyhound Bus - giving birth while on a bus trip
Niagra Falls - good imagery in this one, about love being as unstopable as a waterfall
Perfect - very catchy tune and lyrics
To Be Happy - stirring
Otis Reading - has a nice, homey feel to it. Sweetness of lover coming over
Feel it Coming On - great energy
Suds in the Bucket - excellent spirit and good story about girl who grows up real fast one day and leaves parents shocked
SARA'S SMOOTH, SULTRY, AND SEXY VOICE!!!!!!.......2007-02-24
Great CD!!!! All the tracks are awesome!!! Way to go Sara!!!!
Awesome Album!.......2007-02-05
This is hands down Sara Evans's best album EVER!!! It's such a great blend of country and pop (even with some R&B and jazz) and it's easy for everybody to find a song they like on it. Here's my track by track review of it:
1. Rockin' Horse- Sara sings about a childhood experience and the life lesson she gains from it. It's a cute, upbeat song, but not one of the best on this album. It would have been great for someone else though (4/5)
2. Backseat Of A Greyhound Bus- This is probably the deepest song on the entire album. It's about a girl who gets pregnant before marriage, and gets kicked out of her hometown. Sara injects so much emotion into it and makes it a great song to listen to (5/5)
3. Restless- This is a song that most single people could be able to relate to. It's about feeling out of place in the world and not being able to find "the one." I think this is one of the easiest songs to relate to on this album (5/5)
4. Niagara- This is my favorite song on the album. It's an amazing, well-written ballad and you can just feel Sara's emotions when she sings it. It definitely is a contender for one of the best songs Sara has ever recorded (5/5)
5. Perfect- Very radio-friendly, upbeat rocker. I can definitely see why it was sent to radio. She sounds kind of quirky and cute when she sings it, and you can't help but sing along with her (5/5)
6. Need To Be Next To You- Very beautiful ballad. You can definitely tell how much Sara loved her soon-to-be-ex-husband at the time this song was recorded. This would make a very good wedding song actually (5/5)
7. To Be Happy- Probably the worst song on the album. Now don't get me wrong, it's a cute, upbeat song, and it definitely sticks to you, but it just doesn't size up to any of the other songs on this album (3/5)
8. Tonight- Beautiful, sexy song. This is another good indicator about how she felt about Craig before the whole ordeal happened, and it would also be a good wedding song (5/5)
9. Otis Redding- This song is very...unique. And that's why I love it. The song sort of starts out very mellow, kind of like something you would hear at a coffee shop, but then Sara sings her heart out on the chorus. Just a great song (5/5)
10. Feel It Comin' On- Sara could probably go up to Craig and sing this song to him right now. It's such a sassy love-gone-bad song, and it's a great one too (4.5/5)
11. I Give In- This is another great song that shows how Sara felt about Craig, and it's ANOTHER great wedding song. Most young couples will be able to relate to this song (5/5)
12. Big Cry- The most soulful song on this album. The horns accent Sara's stunning, passionate vocals amazingly, and she just sounds down-right great on it (5/5)
13. Suds In The Bucket- The fun, country tune on the album. You can definitely see why she sent it to radio, and the video is very fun to watch too! (5/5)
OVERALL GRADE: 5/5
Great cd!.......2007-01-06
Sara Evans has an awesome voice, she was made to sing country. This album has more pop sound than her usual traditional country songs. But it's a joy to listen to, 13 great tracks. If you like Sara you will not be disappointed in this cd.
Sara's best album.......2006-12-30
I would say that "Restless" Is Sara's best album to date - It's a perfect combination of Pop and Country music. There are many themes on this album: Love, romance, life, break-ups, and having babies. Sara sings all of these songs perfectly - And every one can relate to at least one song on this album - IF not more! :)

there is no way this album could ever be put out these days. definately had to come out in '84. I mean could you see any band doing aids jokes and getting away with it? well, the milkmen did. has anyone ever noticed the references to f.o.d? "my parents said if i eat all my food then i can go to hardcore show and see f.o.d."-nutrtion. there's another reference to them on a live recording of "milkmen stomp". just curious.

Day-OM! This rekkid ought to be thought of as a classic, it has Laundromat Song, Bitchin' Camaro, Violent School, Nutrition, Dean's Dream, almost every track is freaking awesome and its 23 tracks long! If you don't have this album, well, you suck.

i first bought this album on tape. i am now on my 3rd copy on cd and also have it on vinyl. every song is amazing, however "serrated edge" shines above every other song on the album, as well as every song ever recorded by any artist EVER!!
all the other reviews here, describing the milkmen as "funny" make them sound like they are a novelty act, but their so much more.
Greatest Album of All Time.......2005-04-03
Big Lizard In My Backyard was a step forward in Punk Rock. The Dead Milkmen's Lyrics are the funniest things I have ever heard, and the music is beautiful. Songs such as Bitchin' Camaro and Beach Song are about feelings many people can relate to. Songs like Big Lizard, Dean's Dream and Tugena really sound amazing. This CD could change your life.

The Dust Brothers are best known as the production duo that everyone from the Beastie Boys to Beck and White Zombie have turned to for help behind the mixing board (and to great results). With the soundtrack to Fight Club (the movie based on the Chuck Palahniuk novel), we finally get a glimpse of one of the duo's original creations. Filled with dark techno and sparse industrial passages, it's a bleak though interesting listen. Sinister funk gives way to medieval chants on "Homework," but the bulk of this disc is all about samples and synths. Don't expect to find the quirks of Paul's Boutique or Odelay here, but in terms of good movie mood music, the Dust Brothers have done it again. --Jason Verlinde

great music for a great film.......2007-06-09
The Dust Brothers do an outstanding job at bringing this film to life. Anybody who is a fan of wild, experimental techno or if you are a big fan of the movie then you should pick this up.
Nice Sound.......2007-03-24
This soundtrack has a nice sound to it. Good beats, good base, fun to listen to for any fan of the movie or someone who just wants to chill to some music.
fantastic soundtrack.......2005-12-24
i have to say that this is possibly the most interesting and enjoyable movie soundtracks i have ever heard. it is good to hear something that is fresh, modern, and soulful, unlike all those Stravinsky-clone orchestral soundtracks out there. don't get me wrong, there are a lot of good ones out there, but after a while they all start sounding similar. it is great to have here in Fight Club a soundtrack that highlights the destructive and modern/urban nature of the film itself.
another interesting feature here is that the tracks on this cd are not in original film order. they are in "general" order by themes, but all of the miscellaneous cues and tracks from the film are arranged into the various themes (as indicated by the track titles). for example, the track "Marla" contains multiple cues within the track that happen during scenes that concern Marla herself. also, the very first cue from the movie, during the "fear center" opening credits, does not occur on the cd until the tenth track. i think this is a great idea, as rather than being a "perfect pristine this-is-exactly-as-the-film soundtrack", here we have an album that accentuates the dust brothers' music itself. it would most likely not be as interesting if it were all in order.
and to all those others who complained about the lack of the pixies and tom waits: if you want the music of tom waits, GO BUY A TOM WAITS ALBUM. i also personally hated that "where is my mind?" song from the end of the movie.
Fleeting electro-rock themes and jungle rhythms at least worthy of a twice-over........2005-10-09
The fleeting nature of this album's themes initially frustrated me, even though I had some respect for its uniqueness. Most electronic music I had come across beforehand was repetitious, so this was a nice surprise. Even now, I do wish many of the themes would not be so brief, or at least that they'd return later in a song. But there does need to be some music like this which doesn't approach things like everything else. Also, I initially felt that alot of this album was filler material, but I've come to appreciate it now. Surprisingly, this cd captures the attention of my parents and their friends, people who I'd have thought this was off-limits to, with its modernistic and dark style. Whether they'd purchase a copy of it, as opposed to having just a few minutes' fling with it, is another matter. But this music is at least curious, and worth knowing of its existence.
The production on this album is pretty much as perfect as it gets. I didn't know who the Dust Bothers were at the time, but the production quality was evidently the best I'd ever heard. Some of the themes here are absololuetly amazing. They have kick-ass riffs with jungle beats and the nice balance of electronica and distortion rock. Of course they play with the suround sound, as sound engineers would be expected to. They fade one instrument out whilst another fades in. I love how they distort the piano parts aswell, with the low notes disappearing into nothing but crackles under the heavy treatment. Many of the themes here would make for great hit songs if they were given that reptitious approach and a passible rock singer. I don't know how much of this they composed themselves or how much was culled from elsewhere. But either way, it is amazing and unique.
All the frequency levels are catered for here. Piercing high pitches, low rumbles, distorted whats'it's and everything inbetween. The drums are varied as can be. Bongos are everywhere, as are the contemporary drumsets. As for the melodies and themes- there are nursery rhymes, perverted by the urban Fight Club persona, jungle rhythms all by their lonesome, and heavy rock, semi-metal riffs with electronic tomfoolery to give it its unique edge. I find this album to be a good reflection of the film's mentality. Just as in the film, the fights are in context to psychological issues and quirkiness, this music's kick-ass riffs are also only in context. Only one track really give you a fix on a theme, and that is the opening sequence souundtrack for the film. I'd have prefered there to be more of that throughout this album, but the fact I, and my friends and family members, haven't gotten tired of it suggests there's rhyme and reason to its fleeting nature. Or some may simply put it down to the creators being on drugs and incapable of keeping their attention-span in check. Either way, this is a unique outing which I've found nothing like elsewhere, despite having thouroughly looked.
5 star music and film, looses a star for oversights..........2005-03-01
AWESOME. The Dust Bro's do a wonderful job adding to the layers of dementia, dark humor, sensuality and catharsis in the film. Those guys sampled everything. I even heard a smidgen of music from the game "Starcraft," one of the creepy Zerg background themes: it echoes during the scene where Norton not-so-subtly threatens his boss with disgruntled attention...
now tehn, everyone points out the Pixies omission; "Where is My Mind," from their second album, Surfer Rosa. It closes the film brilliantly when the buildings are collapsing... Great tune, excellently used, ends the movie perfectly! BUT. No one seems to recall the use of Tom Waits' "Goin' Out West," fom the scene where Tyler, jack and Co. are walking through the bar (steady-cam?), down to the basement. Great song, from his '92 album, Bone Machine. Both songs would have been nice for the mix, as would some of the great dialogue. This is, afterall, a film that positively overflows with classic quips and one-liners. And the one-liners are more like Zen koans than one-liners! Looses a star cuz it could have been better, more comphrehensive...
That said, this is a great collection of ominous beats and weirdo-freaked out, instrumental funk. Great Cd to work out to. Even though, as the man says, "Self improvement is masturbation..." Yeah, but that's easy to say when you're Brad Pitt, and you've got Brad Pitt's abs...

Amazon.com essential recording
The self-titled debut from alternative music's favorite dork-rockers launched a career based on absurd lyrics planted in wildly diverse musical garden. Songs like "Put Your Hand Inside the Puppet Head" and the New-Wavish tributary "Youth Culture Killed My Dog," are sung with an Andy Kaufman-like sensibility that leaves one questioning their sincerity. In contrast, the tune "Don't Let's Start" is relatively sweet and earnest. Musically, TMBG stray from the country honker "Number Three" to the glam-rocker "(She Was a) Hotel Detective," adapting accordion, fuzz-boxed guitar, and electric piano to suit their purposes. Perhaps the most subversive mockery of all is how TMBG write extremely catchy melodies that "serious" musicians would love to claim as their own. "His shoes are laced with irony" goes a line from "Hide Away Folk Family." That pretty much ties it up. --Beth Massa

A classic.......2007-06-27
Look, if You like TMBG and you don't have this one... just go ahead and buy it. It's classic.
Pure coffee-induced, nonsensical genius.......2006-11-21
It is unfortunate that this album never gets as much recognition as, say, Flood or The Spine. Although those albums might be tighter or better orchestrated than this one, this one beautifully preserves the original motive and soul of their music. It's definitely not a good album to start out with if you're a beginning TMBG addict - er - fan (personally, I'd suggest The Spine, Factory Showroom or Mink Car) but it fills a conspicuous void if you've been listening to and loving them for a while. Other than They Got Lost, I doubt that TMBG ever produced an album so rife with their special blend of gentle (or not) nonsensicality and refreshingly innovative harmonies. I would even advocate buying this album just for the sleeve artwork =).
Everyone dies frustrated and sad and that is beautiful........2006-05-24
This, of course, was the first album by They Might Be Giants. It established their "formula" of short songs with catchy melodies and silly lyrics. It is somewhat overlooked today, because TMBG almost never play any of these songs in concert anymore. But it does feature a number of classic TMBG songs, like "Put Your Hand Inside the Puppet Head", "Don't Let's Start" and "Hotel Detective". Some of the other songs don't quite hold up as well, but it's a solid first album that would lead to (arguably) better things.
THE FIRST AND THE BEST - A CLASSIC.......2006-05-06
Back in 1990 on the school bus - I saw that cartoony cover art from my friend's cassette tape and asked, "What the heck is that?" He let me borrow it that day and I've been a fan ever since.
The opening of the album is what hooked me for life. John L's distinctive voice struck a nerve. Every song here is totally catchy, melodic, downright weird, and fun to sing along with. Got all the words to every song memorized.
If you like a silly good time, you'll be susceptible to these infectious little ditties. One of my top 5 favorite CD's of all time.
The Best at the Beginning.......2006-04-12
With a completely different sound of later albums, TMBG's debut album contains lots of the classics (Don't Let's Start, Put Your Hand Inside the Puppet Head, She's an Angel), favorites (Everything Right Is Wrong Again, Nothing's Smelling Like a Rose, Rhythm Section Want Ad) and some bizarre They Might Be Giants tracks (Toddler Highway, Rabid Child). If you are a They Might Be Giants fan or a Geek Rock fan, you will not be disappointed with this CD.

Hail Boognish!.......2005-12-14
This is probably one of Ween's most interesting albums. In the cover there is a story of the brothers Dean and Gene Ween and their encounter with Boognish, who is displayed on the front cover of the album. They go on to say that Boognish is the embodiment of two extremes: Good and Evil. The musical styles of this album are more or less a reflection of this concept. The gist of this album is punky, funky, and ultimately delerium, ABSOLUTELY a Ween album to say the least. There is even a funky cover of Prince's "Let me lick your p***y". This is definetely an album for Ween affecionados. Those who are recently tuning in to the band may do well to pick up "Chocolate and Cheese" or "White Pepper". Like the title of one of the albums songs, this disc is like a mushroom festival in hell. Hail Boognish!
Their best.......2005-10-21
This album blew me away when I first heard it 12 or 13 years ago, and I still think that it is Ween's masterpiece, and one of the best rock albums of the past 15 years. So unique, so ambitious, so funny and so very irreverent. The range of musical styles and the freakiness of the lyrics placed Ween in a category all their own (although some might argue that Frank Zappa had lain the groundwork).
I don't think Ween has ever matched "God/Satan" for sheer start-to-finish genius.
Stands the test of time.......2005-04-30
I can't believe how long it's been since this came out. I take offense to the person who said "punk" as a bad thing. Punk can be good when it's done well, as can all forms of music (I love a lot of old-school hardcore stuff). It can also be horrid (like when Guns N Roses attempted to do it or most of the awful pop/punk bands of today). In this case, yes there is a definite punk sound in many of these songs, but Ween put their own twist on it, as they did with country, funk and even Irish music later on. I still pull this album out once in a while to this day and every time I do it, I am thoroughly reminded of why I love this band. While I'd rate my Ween faves as a tie between "Pure Guava" and "Chocolate And Cheese", there IS NO perfect starting point for a first-time Ween listener. There's simply too much to digest and one record is not necessarily reflective of them all. It's pretty much a crap-shoot, but if you hear the right record you just might end up being hooked like I am. I think this album is very much as important as their later recordings.
not for first-time Weeners.......2005-03-02
This album will scare away potential Ween fans. "Punk" is the first word that comes to mind to describe this album. The Ween brothers are very talented, much more than this album showcases. If you want the REAL Ween experience, get Chocolate and Cheese (far and away the best Ween album). Period.
Instant Classic.......2005-01-25
If you do not like this album you are not a real Ween fan therefore you should stop trying.

Originally released in 1989, Blue Earth collects early Jayhawks demo recordings made between 1986 and 1989. While the band had produced a very limited run of their self-titled debut in 1986, this was the first mainstream release to provide a showcase for the songwriting tandem of Mark Olson and Gary Louris--a kind of Midwestern Lennon and McCartney who brought their bittersweet vocal harmonies and opaque lyrics to a nascent alt-country scene. Still rough around the edges, Blue Earth shows the young band very much in the thrall of the Byrds ("Five Cups of Coffee") and Gram Parsons in particular ("Commonplace Streets," "The Baltimore Sun," "Sioux City"). But also here are two impeccable songs that point the way forward: the sublime "Two Angels" and "Martin's Song." Both would resurface in more polished form on their masterful follow-up Hollywood Town Hall. This 2003 reissue includes three previously unreleased tracks--"Fingernail Moon," "Two Minute Pop Song," and "Nightshade"--that are effective examples of the band at this formative period. Sure, greater things were just over the horizon, but no serious Jayhawks fan will want to overlook Blue Earth. --Mark Walker

Customer Reviews:
So different, so raw, so delightful.......2006-07-09
More rural-sounding than country rock, Olson owns the sound of this and their first album. Gary Louris certainly solidified the lineup and grew as a songwriter later on the two albums before Olson left, and even moreso after. This Remastered edition has a clearer sound, and the extra tracks are way welcome, as these fellas wrote, by their own admission, close to 80 songs that haven't ever seen the light of day, many that weren't even recorded in demo form. The raw quality here was never equalled.
Jayhawks were one of the real bands of their time.......2005-04-21
I'm not sure this album is the ideal place for someone to begin, but the Jayhawks with Mark Olsen are certainly the definitive manifestation of the band in my mind. Later albums were less "country rock" but still good music. The best of these, I think was "The sound of lies". Start with "Hollywood Town Hall" and "Tomorrow the Green Grass" if you want the classic stuff. If you want more rock, less country though, go for the later records. On "The Blue Earth", one track more than any other Jayhawks song really fills my spinnaker, and that is "Ain't no end". Never seems to get a mention but I think it's one of their most glorious songs.
Try it, if you never noticed it before you might discover something good.
Way better than people let on.......2005-01-19
This is THE BEST Jayhawks CD. After mark Left, the band was lightweight at best. His gutsy guitar and vocals are sorely missed. "Rainy Day Music" is the best of the bunch, but "The Blue Earth" is more honest and urgent. Forget all that crap about these "just being demos." Sometimes, the raw setting actually enhances the results. Such is the case here. If you like Gram Parsons, this is the best alt-country has generated in tribute to him.
underrated album.......2004-07-31
The rereleased, remastered Blue Earth by the Jayhawks is the seedling from which some amazing Americana grew. Originally released in 1989 by the Minneapolis label Twin/Tone, Blue Earth showcases a young band with great promise. Sure the songs are not as polished and well crafted as those on Hollywood Town Hall and later records. But there is a certain rustic charm to the cuts on this album. The listener can hear Olson and Louris search to find their voices in these simple country-styled compositions. Songs like Five Cups of Coffee and Will I Marry show the beginnings of fine craftsmanship. Enjoy this record for what it is: a small gift. There are no professional session players, no big name producer. This is a few guys from the upper midwest saving up some cash for studio time, playing together while drinking a few too many Grain Belt beers. Sounds like Blue Earth to me.
rainy day music and tomorrow the green grass are better.......2004-04-03
i loved tomorrow the green grass and have rainy day music in my cd player right now. this seems to be an effort to capitalize on the recent success of rainy day music by dragging some old stuff out and re-packaging it for new jayhawks fans. its just not their best effort.

A Good CD, but I recommend the Double Album instead........2007-01-12
TMBG (or perhaps I should say their Record Company) released a Then and Now Double CD that has this album wholesale on it combination with their first album. Unless you already own their debut album or are a purist, I recommend buying that one instead and save yourself some money in the long run.
Contradictory Opinion - looking a little deeper.......2006-07-28
I have to disagree with many of the reviews here, far from being their best album, this so far is my least favorite of TMBG's work. While some may enjoy the music styles, they seem to not be paying much attention to the lyrics. TMBG is notorious for their use of symbolism and metaphor to convey a deeper meaning, whether historical, political or social commentary, or whatever it may be. If you only listen to a TMBG album for the music, you're missing the brilliance of their artistry.
That having been said, this album seems to reveal something of the darker side of the group. The songs cover topics such as alcoholism and drug abuse, government control, combat, death and destruction, adultery, and blasphemy to name a few. Personally, I didn't care for the choice of material. I'm sure others will disagree with me, some will enjoy the subject matter. There's no doubt that the album is well crafted, with TMBG's usual crazy approach to serious topics, and there are even some songs I enjoy, but the darker overtone of this album just wasn't my style. This one's going back on the shelf, and I'll stick to the rest of the albums in my hefty stack of TMBG music.
People should get beat up for stating their beliefs........2006-06-14
This was the second album by They Might Be Giants. If you are familiar with TMBG, you know what to expect. Songs with catchy melodies and silly lyrics. There are a lot of great songs here. My personal favorites are "Ana Ng", "Santa's Beard" and "Shoehorn With Teeth". They Might Be Giants fans love this album, and rightly so.
Great.......2006-03-15
Hey this is a great album with a awsome selection of tunes, very catchy. Well as we all know Ana Ng is one of their best songs but Cowtown is an odd song that you'd expect from tmbg but still good tune. Lie Still Little Bottle is what you would hear from a Starbuck's poetry reading, but hey its catchy. Purple Toupee is one of their is a hard rock song that's as enjoyable as Ana Ng. Me Mr. is one of those songs you could listen to over and over again amd I've Got a Match is another one. Santa's beard reminds me of The Biggest One with Flansburgh very intense melody same with You'll Miss Me (it's almost a recycled version of it). They'll Need A Crane is another great love song by tmbg. Shoehorn With Teeth is a short tune with a great sound. Stand On Your Own Head is a flat sounding song but the Johns make it sound awsome. Snowball in Hell is a keeper with a great chorus. And Kiss Me, Son Of God is like a duet with violins and basses, but turns our to be a funny little song. Overall this is one that any tmbg fan must have, even if you do like the tmbg with their back up band (which i love) I think you will still like it but you maybe should listen to some of the songs. These songs are more catchy, when with the "Band of Dans" has a little more rock sound.
grew on me slowly.......2006-01-17
I told Monica when I brought it back, "it looks great, but I couldn't get into it." She excidedly told me about how she had done the same thing, back when it came out. So we went back to Big Star, Velvet Underground, Have Moicy, and the rest. As Record Exchange employees, we heard too many records to bother with the mediocre. Tmbg Lincoln's cover sure looked great, but two listens weren't enough, even for "record experts" like us.
Almost five years later I ran into Monica again. She said "Do you remember that album you brought back? I played it again a few times and ..." Me too.
This is the best tmbg album. It does take a while to sink in, especially for the truly dense like me, but every song is good. Great, even. If I could give it six stars ...

A Slight Innacuracy.......2007-06-13
The version of "Nadia's Theme" (Theme from The Young and the Restless) isn't actually the one you're expecting. I believe it's actually the original arrangement made for "Bless the Beasts and the Children". So what later became the Young and the Restless theme (the one that was a hit) still remains unreleased on CD.
Hopefully, we can see that version on a future release. Maybe they could get "Little Ballerina Blue" on one while they're at it.
Still, some great stuff here.

Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals, Vol. 2.......2006-03-22
The purchase went as we had hoped. The delievry was as promised, and the quality of the product equal too, or above our expectations.
Not totally an instrumental.......2006-03-10
I was excited to find this album. I bought it but was horrified to find a loud vocal on the first track. The rest of the music is all instrumental but this one track simply JARS you when it plays. Very disappointing!
Another Collection You Wonr Find Anywhere else.......2003-05-06
Well, ERIC records has done it again.
Continuing their unique practice of giving us both well known hits and impossible to find rarities, Eric presents Volume 2 of "Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals". This one is, in my opinion, even better than the first.
First off, the sound quality of this disk is ASTOUNDING. ERIC has gotten the various reissue departments to provide them with absolute first generation mono and stereo masters and this CD proves it. The aural quality is breathtaking. The fact that Orchestral music is so beautifully suited for true stereo playback is exhibited here, as a whopping 15 of the 20 tracks are True Stereo and sound magnificent.
There are, of course, the big soundtrack hits here, like 'The Day The Rains Came" "Rocky", "Ben Casey", "Theme from The Apartment", and " Nadias Theme". All top 30 and well remembered. However, for this 43 year old fan, it was the some of the lessor known tracks, in particulatr the 1963 Colpix low level charter "Theme From The Long Ships" that really makes this collection the gem that it is. Outstanding tracks include "Theme From The Sundowners" , "The Dark At The Top of The Stairs" and "I Will Follow Him" , all tracks that will suddenly sound familiar again after first listen.
Therein lies the BEST part of this collection. When you put this on your player, you will be treated to a nostalgic feast,
a time when the magic of Orchestral music still ruled the charts, and existed in all our homes. And you'll certainly remember most of these once you hear them, which is the fun part!!
There arent enough great things I can say about this collection AND its sister CD "Hard To Find pop Instrumentals- Part 2" I personally liked this volume better, but if you dont have either yet, give yourself a musical treat, and some REAL listening enjoyment and pick these up...
Its listening the way it used to be.
