That Holiday Feeling

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Jazz singer Joe Williams has a voice like butterscotch: thick, creamy, sweet, and somehow light, too. Hearing him reprise a handful of standards and three lesser-known tunes for the holidays is a guaranteed pleasure. Add a delectable horn section--and horn charts to go with chops--that includes trumpeters Joe Wilder and Clark Terry, trombonist Al Grey, alto-sax player Bobby Watson, tenor saxophonist Frank Wess and baritone player Seldon Powell to an already solid ensemble, and Williams has created a sophisticated holiday, feeling. Williams characteristically toys with the phrasing on many of these classics, presenting great treatments of "Kissing by the Mistletoe" and "A Child Is Born." And with his chameleonesque voice that shape-shifts and colors the proceedings, Williams offers a holiday that's adventurous while still remaining cozy, classy, and bright. --Martin Keller

5 out of 5 stars That Holiday Feeling by Steve Lawerence and Edie Gorme.......2007-01-16

This CD was hard to find in the stores. However to my delight, Amazon had it in stock. Thank you, thank you, I'll be enjoying this CD for many years to come at Christmas time.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Christmas CD.......2007-01-09

I used to have this "album" on 33 1/3 vinyl and made the mistake of lending it out one year. I have searched for this title for 25 years and finally it was re released. It is the essence of the time of year brought
to you by sincere and dedicated singers who "live" the Holiday season. A must buy.....

5 out of 5 stars One of the Great Holiday Albums.......2006-11-26

Growing up in the 60s and 70s, this was my family's favorite Christmas album. Even with the durable vinyl that Columbia Records used, I believe we went through three or possibly four copies.

With the advent of CDs in the early 80s, I gave up my turntable and sold off most of my LPs -- and of course soon missed this recording, since it wasn't to be found on CD. After dozens and dozens and dozens of listenings over the years, I could "hear" this album in my head, but of course it wasn't the same.

So I was overjoyed to find this recording finally remastered onto CD last year. Having become a musician in the intervening years, when I played the CD I experienced not only nostalgia from my childhood but also found that my now-trained musical ear immediately recognized these instrumental arrangements as being top-notch. Steve and Eydie were of course in exceptional vocal form when they made this recording [and the digital transfer is terrific], but since they are noted for being dedicated to having the right orchestral sound, they certainly chose an excellent crew [headed by the great Don Costa] when they made this recording. The musicians and the orchestrations are a perfect match for the vocalists.

The "big band" sound on some of the tracks is terrific, but the softer selections feature some really shimmering and subtle orchestral work. I won't do a track-by-track review, but here's a prime example: Anyone doing "White Christmas" always has Bing Crosby in their memory, since that song-and-artist are one of the classic partnerships. There have been a LOT of covers over the years, but they've all been lame attempts at being cheery and warm. However, the arrangement here for Eydie Gorme takes a decidedly different tack, starting with a decidedly bittersweet intro and going on to include some rapturous yet very subdued backing vocals. And Miss Gorme's vocals are passionate and full-bodied. The result is a version that is so unique and beautifully artistic that it more than holds its own if anyone insists on comparing it with Crosby's. No easy task, that.

Mr. Lawrence is of course terrific as well. His creamy baritone fits his solos very well -- a smooth sound, and a knack for lyric interpretation. Well, the same can be said for Miss Gorme, for both these artists have a true talent for really dedicating themselves to the song at hand [as opposed to the multitude of performers whose prime concern has been to make the song merely a tool to show off their voices]. On the numerous duets, they both make the fun palpable and engaging.

Given the plethora of pop music Christmas albums that have been produced over the decades, this really is one of the few that really feels like a holiday album. Other artists think merely warbling their way through holiday songs is sufficient, but Lawrence and Gorme are never anything less than a joy -- their infectious fun and heartfelt singing make this sound like a live performance rather than a studio recording. Even the use of sleighbells on one number, usually a very hackneyed, trite, and pedantic orchestral trick, actually contributes to the fun and doesn't sound remotely corny.

So if you like singers with exquisite taste and solid vocal technique, if you like Christmas albums that aren't hokey and workmanlike, and if you appreciate truly artistic and vibrant orchestrations, you will quickly come to love this fine recording.

Forget Amazon's limit of five stars for ratings -- this one gets ten stars from me.

5 out of 5 stars That Holiday Feeling.......2005-12-28

I have enjoyed this for over 30 years. Up until now I had to listen to the vinyl version. It's great they finally made this available on CD and give you 2 bonus tracks too. This is Christmas Music at it's best. I just hope the radio stations add this to their playlist.

5 out of 5 stars Retro rules!.......2004-12-15

I, too, grew up listening to this album in the '70's. I had forgotten how great it was. In fact, I had sort of forgotten Steve and Eydie altogether, until a co-worker received another one of their CD's for a joke birthday gift. To make a long story short, I was reminded of this holiday collection (which, incidentally, you can get for $20 at www.steveandeydie.com), which I promptly purchased and am enjoying very much while I write this review.

Steve and Eydie rock! Their martini-lounge arrangements are truly timeless, and just the antidote to what ails us in 2004. Every song is a delight and a pleasure. And the CD even has two bonus tracks! Buy it, play it, love it, and share it. I personally don't see how I ever spent so many Christmases without it. Ho-ho-ho!!!

Album Description

Three years after her critically acclaimed "Once In a Blue Moon," singer Margaret Carlson has surpassed herself. Her new album, "This Christmas ... my favorite things," is a collection of some of the world's best-loved Christmas songs, many done with new, modern arrangements by Grammy- nominated arranger Frank Mantooth. Mantooth, along with some of the jazz world's best talents, accompanies Margaret on piano on the album.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great songs, great singer, great musicians!.......2001-12-06

I just came from a concert of Margaret Carlson singing the songs from this album. She is fabulous and the performances are great. Anyone who likes jazz will instantly treat this as a Christmas classic. There are so many Christmas CDs to choose from and most are average at best. I know, I own many of them. ;-) You can't go wrong with this one!

5 out of 5 stars This is the Christmas CD I've been looking for!.......2000-03-30

I love the traditional Christmas songs & hymns, but wanted to find something that gave them new life. These arrangements & Margaret Carlson's great voice make you hear them as if for the first time. On several songs, you have the feeling this must be the way the songs were intended to be sung. Her version of This Christmas will be famous some day. Check out Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (which I never liked too well before hearing her sing it) or Deck the Halls. I got this CD at the beginning of the Christmas season and liked it so well that I bought several to give as early Christmas gifts and everyone loved it. It's as perfect for listening to while you curl up by the fire with someone you love as it is for Christmas parties! And it solves the problem of what to buy everyone for Christmas too!

5 out of 5 stars A delightful surprise.......2000-03-23

When we received "This Christmas .... my favorite things" we were somewhat apprehensive. After all Christmas music is so traditional and just shouldn't be messed with. But what a delightful surprise. The arrangements are creative but not extreme and some songs really affect the emotions. Ms. Carlson's voice is fantastic and by far better than the majority of the jazz vocalists we've heard. This gal soon should hit the top. Go girl!

Willard and Darlene Torgrim

5 out of 5 stars Great CD, no matter what the season.......2000-01-26

It's got the classics, but it also takes some of the traditional songs and-with the jazz influence-adds a little spice to them. I love the ones that start out traditional and jump into the jazz.

5 out of 5 stars That Crosby Feeling.......2003-12-16

This album features Christmas songs that were not included on Bing Crosby's "Merry Christmas" album (a.k.a. "White Christmas"). This is a terrific selection of Yuletide classics. Another CD by Bing is entitled "The Voice of Christmas", and he really is. His singing on these songs exudes a warmth that is lacking from many other singers. It doesn't say it on the CD, but "Here Comes Santa Claus" and "Twelve Days of Christmas" are duets with the delightful Andrews Sisters. This CD is out of print, but it shouldn't be too hard to find a used copy. I recommend that you do so.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Album Ever!.......2003-10-08

I'm sorry although not surprised that "That Christmas Feeling" by Bing Crosby is no longer available. I have to say that, in my opinion, it was not only the best Christmas album ever, but the best album from any genre, from any time.

It conveyed the best of the best. It was in this collection that Bing Crosby who, like no other, sang Christmas superbly, with arraignments and vocal interpretations second to none. The true meaning of Christmas was unmistakenly painted in music and I have never tired of hearing it, year after year. I play it many times during the Christmas season, and the pleasure of once again enjoying this album only increases with time.

I'm sad that this album is no longer generally available. It is possible to obtain the songs on a collection of Bing's Christmas music that was released a few years ago, but they lack the warmth attached to the inspired "That Christmas Feeling" compilation. Even though the songs were recorded at different times and probably at different places over a period of 15-20 years, "That Christmas Feeling" came very close to being inspired in the selections that were chosen, and even the manner in which the songs themselves were lined-up, and then recorded. There was a "magic" to it all. It seemed as if they were woven into a kind of Christmas tapestry. Whether this was intended or not, is for someone else to say. However, the magical effect is truly present.

Unfortunately, the magic is largely gone. You can get the songs that were on the album, but they are re-mixed and digitized, and therefore have lost a considerable amount of the warmth and personality that accompanied the original compilation of "That Christmas Feeling." Even though the album had technical flaws, these flaws actually added to the ambiance that was so important to us who grew up hearing this album. When the attempt to clear up the flaws was completed, there might have been improved sound in some respects, but sound in the selections now betray an uneven "texture" and lack the character and especially the warmth that should characterize the Christmas season, especially music that was sung by Bing.

I say bring it back, whether people buy it or not. Bring it back with the original cover (a darkened picture of a church) and with all due respect to one of the greatest talents of all time, notwithstanding his bad press and problems. Bing would approve and so would the rest of us who had merrier Christmases thanks to his genius, and especially when hearing yet again "That Christmas Feeling."

5 out of 5 stars I'm Dying!.......2002-12-12

My father used to play this record of all others for me when at Christmas time when I was growing up. I'm 21 now and still love it. The record is barely playable, so I wanted to get him the CD for Christmas, but NO it's out of print! It is A CRIME that this CD is no longer available! A CRIME! A CRIME! A CRIME!

I, too, grew up with this wonderful, heart touching collection, and highly recommend it to anyone who can find it, as it includes 6 of my favorite Christmas songs on one CD. What wonderful writing and performances.

Unfortunately I see that it is currently unavailable. I have decided to wait on purchasing any other CD's until this one is rereleased.

5 out of 5 stars A Christmas to Remember !!.......2004-01-02

WOW....what an amazing trip down memory lane this album was !! Like many of the previous reviewers, I grew up on this album and can't help but be transported back in time to my childhood and Christmasses gone by when I hear these songs....the warmth and family feel of Christmas is all in there !!! Just close your eyes and listen to the songs like: "Christmas is for Children" and my personal favorite "Old Toy Trains"......instantly you'll see the snow falling in big fluffy flakes around you.....your Mom serving up hot chocolate....sled riding in the backyard....decorating the tree......its truly magical !! A tough album to find but well worth it !! If I could only have one album with Christmas songs on it.....I would take this one over all others !! AMAZING !!

5 out of 5 stars The search is over!.......2003-12-10

My childhood memories of Christmas include listening to this masterpiece Christmas album. My sister let me have the album twenty years ago and I have searched every year to find it to replace my scratched LP. Yet we still listen to it each season with the static and scratches. I finally can return the album to her. The songs bring so much meaning to Christmas. Especially "Little Toy Trains" and "Christmas is for Children" are songs that young and old can cherish for years to come. Everyone can relate to "It Must Be Getting Close To Christmas" as a child and adult. I too am surprised noone else has ever recorded these songs. I am elated that my search is over and highly recommend this album to everyone who enjoys a classic, one of a kind Christmas album that sounds as modern today as it did thirty years ago!

5 out of 5 stars Simply a Superb Album.......2003-11-30

This ia an example of the finest Christmas music available and it was made over thirty years ago. If it doesn't make you feel all warm inside, you aren't human. I don't know who did the arrangements but they are exactly what is called for. Mr. Campbell's voice on these songs is again exactly what is called for. An INCREDIBLE ALBUM!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars It will be your favorite Holiday CD.......2003-11-11

Again like other comments posted, I too listened to this holiday classic as a child on the turntable. I have kids of my own and have been thinking about his songs every holiday season for 10 years now. I havent been able to find it until now. I'm amazed some of the original songs on this CD havent been re recorded by todays artist. Listening to these songs takes you home to chilly mornings with winters first snow beautiful christmas trees in dimly lit rooms. Even if you have never heard this holiday album before it will no doubt put you in the christmas spirit.

5 out of 5 stars my #1 christmas cd.......2003-12-05

this has turned out to be our favorite christmas cd. we have played out charlie brown's christmas, wynton marsalis' jazzy wonderland, and a few others on our list so we took a risk on this one. for the last 3 years we have sent it to friends and family (from amazon of course) in the beginning of december as a nice way to start off the holiday season. if you like "warm fuzzies" at christmas, this is a no brainer. get it. you'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2001-07-26

I've got Xmas albums by everybody, but this is one of my favorites - homey, cozy, mellow. His "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve" makes me cry and smile at the same time. Thanks, Joe.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Joe Williams.......2001-02-25

Excellent renditions of some holiday classics and some seldom heard gems as only Joe could do. Truly music that will enhance your holidays.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas Magic Warm, Jazzy and Cozy.......1999-12-18

If Nat Cole had stayed among us long enough and remained truer to his jazz vocal and piano roots, he may well have given us "That Holiday Feeling." Thankfully, Joe Williams gave us this gift at Christmas 1990.

This album shares the intimacy and warmth of the finest, most traditional Christmas recordings, but remains solidly in a jazz pocket. Mr. Williams' phrasing on "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," "White Christmas," "Let It Snow," and others showed a confident singer presenting grown-up versions of holiday classics. Those who enjoyed Mr. Williams' great performamces on "The Cosby Show" owe it to themselves to buy this CD or one of the many he did with Count Basie.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......1999-12-09

If you're looking for an addition to your holiday music collection, this is a must-have cd. The arrangements are clean and simple, never overwhelming, and Joe Williams's singing is like a cup of hot chocolate by a roaring fireplace.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant 1940's music.......2003-10-31

Recorded Christmas music first became popular in the 1940's following the success of Bing Crosby's original version of White Christmas. This British budget collection containing fifty Christmas recordings of the era is as good as anything you are likely to find, especially at the price.

Despite this being a budget release, the sound quality is good (not always perfect) and there are some liner notes that include they year in which each track is recorded - the dates range from 1939 to 1951. This double CD was originally released as two separate budget CD's (one, like this collection, titled That Christmas feeling and the other titled Winter wonderland) and you will find some songs appearing twice, but with a different singer on each CD. I counted nine such songs but I don't mind this duplication. Why should I complain at getting both the Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra versions of White Christmas?

Bing Crosby, the Andrews sisters, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Doris Day, Perry Como and Nat King Cole account between them for a substantial number of the tracks included here but that's how it should be - but there are plenty of other singers and bands represented here.

Apart from those already mentioned, there are several other great ladies of the era here. Ella Fitzgerald sings Santa Claus got stuck in my chimney. Peggy Lee swings nicely on Winter weather, backed by Benny Goodman. Britain's Anne Shelton sings a beautiful version of Merry Christmas. Child star Deanna Durbin sings O come all ye faithful and Silent night. Margaret Whiting is not represented by a solo recording, but she and Jimmy Wakely sing a great version of Silver bells.

Gene Autry gets two tracks - Frosty the snowman and Here comes Santa Claus, though his most famous Christmas recording, Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, is not included, although two covers of the song are. Ernest Tubb's original recording of Blue Christmas is included. Other great singers and bands to be found here include Glenn Miller, Woody Herman, Spike Jones, Eddy Arnold, the Orioles, Dick Haymes, Guy Lombardo, the Boston pops orchestra, Vaughn Monroe and Russ Morgan.

If you enjoy 1940's Christmas music, this is essential.
