Bad CD mastering........2007-05-24
This is a fantastic album, but the sound has been destroyed in the process of making the CD. It sounds for all the world like an amateur dub of a worn LP, with a bad electrical connection somewhere in the audio chain.
I checked previous LPs of this album, and they all sound FAR superior to this CD made by Wounded Bird Records.
Checking the Wounded Bird website turns up a prominent disclaimer that all their CDs are properly licensed. I guess they have to say it, because you'd never know it from the quality of their product.
This is a real shame because this is, like I said, a fantastic album. But I'd be far better off making my own CD of it using my own LP.
THE FINEST LIVE ALBUM I'VE HEARD .......2007-04-08
The Manhattan Transfer has an uncanny ability to outdo their studio recordings in live concert performance, a testament to the fact that their success cannot be credited to anything other that pure musical acumen. This fabulous album is no exception. It offers a wide variety stylings and genres, and every note is 100% perfection. THAT CAT IS HIGH, SNOOTY LITTLE CUTIE, and FOUR BROTHERS showcase them in fine form working the jazz and standard song circuit, their specialty. Get this album...you'll play it out like me!
Great performance, poor reproduction.......2007-01-05
This is a collection of the Transfer at their early best. Great entertainment . . . but, at least on the (brand-new) CD that I bought via Amazon from a third party, the listening was spoiled by sub-par recording/mastering/manufacturing: background hiss on some tracks (fair enough for a concert recording from the 70's, I suppose), and crackling distortion at higher amplitudes and/or higher frequencies (just plain disappointing in anything post-1950).
The Best From The Begining!.......2006-01-25
I had this release on LP when if first came out. It looked like I was going to have to transfer it to CD myself when I found that it was finally released! This is the Man Tran's best early work. If you are a fan now and aren't familiar with the roots of this legendary vocal group, get this CD. The styles are varied and the harmony is incredible. Manhattan Transfer has some of the best showmanship of any group recording today. Sit back and enjoy some of the BEST!
Great to finally have this on CD!.......2005-09-10
This recording seemed to take forever to get to cd, but it's sure welcome. It's the only ManTran recording (to my knowledge) with "Snootie Little Cutie" and "15 Minute Intermission". ("Well Well Well" finally found its way to another later recording).
The only downside is the recording quality, but to a true fan, this isn't an obstacle. This is a definite must have for a ManTran Fan!

You Can't Lose On This One!.......2004-10-12
I bought this album back in 1987 on LP and I played it over and over again. It was one of my favorite albums. On every song Manhattan Transfer has done a suberb job. My favorites though, are the acappella "Gloria", the thumpin' bass guitar on "On The Boulevard", the latin beat to the "Shaker Song", and the funky "Ray's Rockhouse".
Purchase this CD, you will not be disappointed! It is fantastic from beginning to end. My LP is long gone, but I will definitely purchase the CD.

Mostly from Vocalese; a must have; also check it out on DVD.......2007-03-14
Everything is a bit faster and with this driving vibe that only live performances seem to have. And also, you know how with some of great bands when they play live you catch yourself thinking, how's it possible? this out-of-tune junk can't be them... I'm not talking some garage bands: even the early Deep Purple was like that, Gillan not hitting right notes, guitar out of tune, etc. Not here! TMT perform live at their recorded level. I have to honestly say that I prefer some of the live versions here over their recorded equivalents.
Btw, there's a DVD with this (I think) show, check it out too: it seems to have all the stuff that's on this CD, note for note, and in addition a version of Blue Champagne that BEATS its recorded original on TMT (and always brings tears to my eyes). This DVD is out of print (rent it on Netflix!), but I think the concert itself is also present on the double-featured DVD where they're paired with a Carmen McRae concert in Japan (not a shabby thing to have in its own right). It is Double Time Jazz Collection, Vol. 1.
My First Time Seeing Them. . ........2002-04-18
This is from their "Vocalese" tour, which I had the pleasure of winning two tickets on a radio and being able to see. Since then, I've seen then 8 times and even had the pleasure of meeting all, except Tim Hauser. They were all charming and gracious. The "Live" CD is perhaps the epitome of what the ManTran does best. They will absolutely blow you out of your seat. Listen to "Airegin," and see if you can sing along. Or "Move," which is even faster in its presentation. Yes, I agree with most reviewers that these cats can do live what they do in the studio. They have certainly been such a positive influence on my musical style. This should be in any jazz lover's collection withou question.
I WISH I HAD BEEN THERE!!.......2001-06-11
This is what I think every time I listen to this CD. It is absolutely a "must have" for anyone who loves TMT, the BEST jazz vocal group without any doubt. I really like all the tracks but I think the live version of "shaker song" is spectacular, not to mention the delightful "that's killer Joe" (I would really like to be like that Joe.....)!
Studio to Stage, great transition.......2000-09-01
One of the best things about this vocal group is that for the most part, what they record in the studio is able to be performed live. They make that transition very well here, and, honestly, I prefer hearing the group live than their studio recordings. There are several songs here from their album "Vocalese" that are even more fun to listen to while being performed live. I also think this is a perfect album for someone not familiar with the group as it offers a pastiche of the styles of music for which The Manhattan Transfer is famous. However, this album was recorded in 1986 and I really wish that the Transfer would release a more recent live recording that would also cover some of their later achievements, including the albums to follow "Vocalese:" "Brasil," "Offbeat of Avenues," "Tonin'," and "Swing." I always recommend this album to people. I think it's a perfect companion to the Antholgy.

A brilliant quartet in a rare live recording.......2002-11-08
Few of the Manhattan Transfer's studio recordings have captured their magnetism as effectively as this terrific disc recorded live in Tokyo in 1983.
From the opening "Birdland," you can feel the energy and enthusiasm of the crowd. Almost every song here has been featured elsewhere, but not with the electricity here. Take "Jeannine," for example - one of their standards. Only here do we get the long, intricate improvisations that the singers added in live performances, totally trumping their studio version.
The early gospel-inflected hit "Operator" falls near the end of the program, and it's stunning - again with greater passion that makes the original track sound tame. Janis Siegel's voice is in soaring form, but all four musicians sound superb; either individually or together, they really know how to sing.
Deep thanks is due to Rhino for acquiring this treasure, and releasing it with their usual high production values. The Manhattan Transfer have produced some fine recordings, but I would never have imagined that such a vibrant document of their live performances existed. For fans of the group, or fans of fine jazz singing in general, it's an unexpected gift.
