Brenda Lee's career began at the tender age of just 5 singing her heart out in church with the Master Worker's Quartet in Georgia. 5 out of 5 stars Excellent Christian Compilation .......2007-07-03

I really enjoyed this particular compilation because it included hits over a wide timespan. I wasn't limited to hits from just the recent years, so I was thrilled to see this CD encompassed even the songs I grew up on in the Christian arena. I would recommend this particular product to anyone who wishes to have a wide range of contemporary Christian music.

After painstaking work, CCM Magazine came up with a list of what it considers the top 100 Christian songs of all times. But instead of simply creating the list or even releasing a book (which they did), they also decided to release those songs on four CD's. This is the first of that set.

This CD takes songs randomly from the list. These aren't the top 25 or the bottom 25. They worked hard to mix the songs from different decades as well to make sure the set was well rounded. For instance, they've got "Praise the Lord" from the 70's and "God of Wonders" from just a few years ago.

Naturally, with any list, you'll get some obvious choices. This time, the obvious choices include such classics as "Awesome God," "The Great Adventure", "Where There is Faith," "The Warrior is a Child," "Place in This World," and "What if I Stumble." There are even one of two songs I'm not a big fan of that I knew had to be included, like "People get Ready...Jesus is Comin'" and "Heaven."

And, equally as naturally, there are songs on the list that wonder why they are included. For me, the biggest question is "Stand." I'm a huge Susan Ashton fan, but always felt this was one of her weaker songs. Surely they could have found something else to include here. "Lead Me On" is another curious selection because I can think of several other Amy Grant songs that belong here instead. Not that I don't like that song. Of course, without seeing the entire list, it's hard to judge in this case.

23 of the songs are the original recordings by the original artists. Two of the songs are tribute recordings. The first is "When God Ran" as recorded by Across the Sky. When I first heard they'd be recording this song, I knew it was a perfect fit, and I was right. Also rerecorded here is "Oh Lord, You're Beautiful." This song is covered by Warren Barfield, who does a very good job with it.

Almost every song on this two-disc set has a place in my heart. I could go on about many of them and what they've met to me over the years. And if you've listened to Christian music for a significant length of time, you'll feel the same way. This is a great way to get many of those songs together in one place.

This compilation is another winner, produced by Paul Williams for 'House of Hits Productions Ltd'.

Paul Williams also produced another fantastic Perry Como compilation for 'House of Hits' a year prior to this release called 'Greatest Christmas Songs'.

In both compilations, sound quality is superior and song collections is generally superb! Blending popular evergreens with songs that are much rarer!

The compilation is made up of 21 superbly sung and beautifully arranged Como treasures of the 'Faith and Inspirational' side of Perry!

This compilation shows that as well as handling a gentle but meaningful song of prayer smoothly, he can also belt out with pure excellence, a triumphant expression of a hymn or popular song of faith with superior control!

Here we see songs taken from two of Perry's classic albums of 'Faith and Inspiration': 'I Believe' and 'When you come to the end of the day' along with a blend of single and EP releases!

This album has be superbly mixed and re-mastered to a high standard which is most certainly what us Como fans really want!

The CD also comes complete with a well researched and informative set of liner notes, plus 3 nice shots of Perry included throughout the booklet and casing!

I can NEVER fault any of Perry Como's work, it is all unique in it's own way, just like the unique human being that he was, is and always will be regarded of by his millions of fans Worldwide!

So whether your feeling happy or sad, play this album to uplift your spirits, whether you want to hear a gentle song of faith or a patriotic song of inspiration. There is something to suit all tastes!

Some people feel that the version of 'Ave Maria' used should have been more appropriately one of the earlier versions. All the versions Perry has sung have been wonderful. The 1968 version included here does have a Christmas feel to it, but is certainly beautiful.

Also, 'Holy God we praise thy name', which is included in this collection IS NOT the complete version. It is missing the accompaniment of St. Patrick's Cathedral Boys Choir from the 2nd verse onwards. The actual recording included lasts 1:29 (approximately), however, within the booklet it states the time as being 2:43 (approximately) which in contradiction of the actual content within the compilation! It has been suggested that this was a partial take, before the addition of the Choir was included. So, in a way it is considrably rare taking that into consideration. It displays the stages thgrough the production of a song. If you had never heard the song prior or closely observed the liner notes stating the approximate running time, you would not be aware of this production error!

Having said that, BMG have apparently corrected the error and happily agreed to replace anyone's copy of the CD that has the errors on with the corrected version. This is obviously a sign of good service on BMG's side! Fair play BMG!

To be honest though, I am not particularly bothered. I will probably just end up purchasing the corrected version as well in the future! It is nice to have both versions if your a collector such as I!

'Holy God we praise thy name' is also avialable on several other compilations of Faith and Inspiration and Christmas songs, so keep your eyes on the lookout for them! Even so, the sound quality is by NO means superior to the quality within this compilation!

Finally, some people have remarked that 'Greatest Gospel Songs' is an odd title. Well, I suppose it is! We generally consider Perry's songs of this genre as songs of 'Faith and Inspiration'. They make it sound as if Perry will be singing 'O happy day' on the CD - wow! Wouldn't that be fun!

Keep these Perry Como compilation's coming!

I actually bought this CD because of the beautiful old song "Good Night, Sweet Jesus," which I wanted to teach to my 3-year-old (he loves it). I haven't been able to find that song anywhere else! The only reason I give this album 4 stars instead of 5 is because I'm not crazy about a lot of the song choices. However, Perry Como's beautifully soothing voice makes up for it. And his version of "Ave Maria" makes it all worth it.

There appear to be two different versions of this CD currently available which are causing confusion with reviewers. The first production run of this CD contained a number of errors the most serious of which was an abridged version of Perry's "Holy God We Praise Thy Name" where the hymn was cut off just prior to the St. Patrick's Cathedral Boy's Choir. The time given within the credits was correct but the actual track time was not. Other errors included monaural versions of stereo originals such as Perry's 1959 "The Lord's Prayer" and songs from his stereophonic album "When You Come to the End of the Day" released in 1958. Some reviewers claim that they have purchased copies within which these errors have since been corrected. If you have purchased the faulty version of this CD compilation it should be returned for exchange.

I am delighted to hear that BMG has finally corrected the errors within this CD! That's wonderful news. The original issue was missing almost half of one hymn "Holy God We Praise Thy Name" while several of the hymns were in monaural instead of real stereo as they should have been! Good for BMG! I'm sending my old copy in for replacement pronto. Fans should know,however, that all of the songs from Perry's album "When You Come to the End of the Day" have since been released within two different compilations, one from Collectables and the other from Buddha. The Buddha compilation included full stereophonic versions of ALL songs including his 1959 recordings "Ave Maria" and "The Lord's Prayer" for the first time in more than forty years. Nevertheless, BRAVO TO BMG! for correcting this CD!

This CD is one of many recorded by Mr. C. I listen today to the contemporary religious recordings....only for a few moments.
Perry Como's The Lords Prayer and other (gospel) recordings surpass any other male vocalists. His range...his style and his phrasing are perfect for all of his recordings. He chose them with great care. He sings them because he means every word of them. That makes a great difference. So many recorded songs only for the money. He recorded, of course, for the income. He did not record songs only for the money.

Anyone who can listen to this CD and find fault...should wake up and smell the coffee. What I hear of today's recordings....makes me want to return to my selected...and paid for CDs, albums, 78s...45s..tapes... How good it is to hear quality recordings on CD. The man lived a life such as no other performer of his day....and as no other living today.

Perry Como Quality. critics only know where to find some excuse to comment. Let them list ones they think are better.

This well-compiled 1999 Wolf collection is one of the best-sounding Charlie Patton-albums on the market. Wolf Records achieves a balance here, cutting down as much surface noise as possible without sapping the dynamics of the performance, and these 69 minutes of music include almost all of Patton's best songs.
There are numerous fine Patton-compilations on the market, including Yazoo's "The Best Of Charlie [sic] Patton" and Recall's very reasonably priced double-disc "Screamin' & Hollerin' The Blues", but it is doubtful whether any of them are better than this one.

    Little Richard (aka Richard Penniman) has to be one of the best rock 'n' roll performers in history, influencing such artists as Buddy Holly, The Beatles, particularly Paul McCartney, and Jimi Hendrix. This nice, budget-priced CD contains some of his best songs. My personal favorites are "Long Tall Sally," "The Girl Can't Help It," "Rip It Up," and "Lucille." I highly reccomend this CD to anyone who likes rock 'n' roll or any of the artists mentioned above. I'm a fan of all of them and I like this CD.

      Album Description

      Brenda Lee's career began at the tender age of just 5 singing her heart out in church with the Master Worker's Quartet in Georgia. One of the biggest pop stars of the early '60s and while she made few recordings of note after the mid-60's, the best of her first decade is fine indeed, encompassing not just the pop ballads that were her biggest hits, but straight country and some surprisingly fierce rockability.
