Heart of a Woman

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
After releasing CDs of standards, Christmas songs, and contemporary Christian music, Kathie Lee Gifford dives into adult contemporary pop with Heart of a Woman. Gifford is about as review-proof as they come; you love or hate her. It's sure to be that way with this disc, which finds her breathily emoting one (occasionally Gifford-cowritten) midtempo ballad after another. Never as likably brash/obnoxious as she can be in her looser TV moments, Heart is either sickly sincere or transparently cynical, depending on your point of view. Only the listener can truly decide, though. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

1 out of 5 stars Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27

This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

4 out of 5 stars Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-01-28

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

5 out of 5 stars One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

5 out of 5 stars A beguiling album.......2004-10-31

Someone had a brilliant notion in getting Leroy Anderson to write a show. (It wasn't the first time; he was hired for "Wonderful Town" but was ditched in favor of Leonard Bernstein.) That it didn't quite work may owe to the fact that he was largely written out, the best of his imperishable vest-pocket tone poems long in the past. Still, this is an utterly captivating score, superbly interpreted. If you want a complete idea how it sounds you might want to get MCA's budget two-disc anthology of Anderson conducting his own music, including several of the show's dance numbers; they almost make you forget how great Arthur Fiedler was with this master of the pops.

4 out of 5 stars Broadway FLOP yields a HIT original cast album.......2004-02-13

This is another splendid original cast recording from Goddard Lieberson and Columbia records. Great score by Leroy Anderson by a fine cast headed by Elaine Stritch who is in great voice here. Don Ameche is her nemesis/love interest and Pat Stanley nearly steals the show with her first act number "The Pussy Foot."

The record is short (45 minutes) and does not include the dance pice "The Town House Maxixe" which can be heard on MCA's Leroy Anderson collection. What is on the CD is quite delightful and Sony has done a first rate job coaxing excellent sound from the early stereo tapes. The booklet gives a good essay on the history of the trobled show and a detailed plot summary.

5 out of 5 stars a classic cult musical.......2002-10-19

GOLDILOCKS is one of my all-time favorite 'lost musicals'. It struggled through three months and 161 performances on Broadway, only to close after scathing reviews and dwindling audiences.

GOLDILOCKS was written by theater critic Walter Kerr as a love-letter to the silent movies that had captivated him as a child. The story concerns sardonic silent-actress Maggie Harris (Elaine Stritch) who has a stormy love-hate relationship with her cocky director (Don Ameche). Complications arise in the form of beautiful Lois Lee (Pat Stanley), who sets out to steal him for herself. Maggie decides to make one more picture under the assumed name of Goldilocks, and makes one last grab at romance...

The reason why the show failed so miserably was the weakness of the book, which was magnified a thousand times over by the greatness of the score; which features "Lazy Moon", "Lady in Waiting", "The Pussy Foot", "Where is the Beast in You?", and my personal favorite "I Never Know When to Say When".

Through its lovely cast album, the musical has a devout cult following and no wonder. Elaine Stritch in her first Broadway leading-role (after years of supporting work in revivals of PAL JOEY and ON YOUR TOES) and the sparkling score of Leroy Anderson is fantastic stuff. Highly recommended.

Sony Music.

5 out of 5 stars Straight from Broadway's Golden Age: It's Goldilocks!.......2001-06-29

I first discovered Goldilocks through the double draw of Leroy Anderson and Elaine Stritch. Elaine Stritch I already knew as Joanne in Company singing "The Ladies Who Lunch", and Leroy Anderson was one of my favorite composers, known for such light programmatic and novelty orchestral pieces as The Syncopated Clock, Belle of the Ball, Bugler's Holiday, The Typewriter and Plink, Plank, Plunk. That combo of names caught my eye as I was flipping through the record bins one day, and as I scanned the album cover I saw the names Don Ameche, Nathaniel Frey and Margaret Hamilton which absolutely clinched the deal. I left the store with the record and went straight home to play it. From the moment I dropped the needle (yes, I've had it that long) I was captivated, and it has since become one of my perennial favorites.

The score is top notch, particularly in the material for Stritch and the perfectly cast Don Ameche. It does sag a bit in the material for the secondary couple, but I think that's because it's the primary couple who are the comedians while the secondary couple gets stuck with the sappy side of romance. Yes, there are book problems. Walter Kerr later admitted that they kept beefing up the comedy at the expense of the love story, and reading through the book (which through an incredible stroke of good fortune I found at a local Half Price Books) that's a fair criticism. But this weakness doesn't overwhelm the show and make it unworkable. I have to agree with the assessment that with The Music Man already running featuring a slightly more lovable con artist and a sweet rather than brassy leading lady, Goldilocks wasn't able to measure up to the competition. Taken on its own terms though, Goldilocks works wonderfully.

To mention particular favorites of mine in the score, I have to start with Stritch's Act 2 torch song, "I Never Know When To Say When". Why didn't this become a standard? It stacks up with the best Broadway has to offer. You can hear the pain in Stritch's voice as she laments the mess she's made of her relationhips. "Give the Little Lady" near the top of Act 1 doesn't really cover much in the realm of plot, but it's just so much fun, and "The Beast In You" never fails to get me laughing. All of these feature Stritch alone or with the chorus, but her duet with Ameche, "No One'll Ever Love You", is just as good, and Ameche's solo number, "I Can't Be In Love", in which he discovers to his astonishment that he is indeed in love, is priceless. Then on top of that is "Bad Companions" for Don Ameche's shady sidekicks Nathaniel Frey (an excellent comic character actor who appeared in many better known shows such as Damn Yankees and She Loves Me) and Margaret Hamilton (the Wicked Witch of the West sings!) which is a hoot from start to finish. These are the standouts in my book, but the whole score is eminently listenable, pleasant and tuneful. Of course with Leroy Anderson writing the music it couldn't be anything else.

I sometimes wish I had been born 30-40 years earlier so I could have actually seen what I am only able to get the barest hint of from reading the libretto and listening to the cast album. I strongly recommend to anyone who has had enough interest to wind up here reading these reviews to make this show a permanent part of your collection. More people need to know this show!

5 out of 5 stars Worth your investment - A real delight!.......2001-01-14

Having learned about the life of Leroy Anderson through the recent PBS story on his career,I was very interested to hear this famous composer's only Broadway show.

This original cast recording is a gem. The majority of the songs are first rate, the perfomers are all first rate and the recording quality sounds as fine as anything on the market today. What a shame that the show had such serious problems, such as a weak book and opening with such hits as West Side Story and Music Man already running on Broadway.

If you enjoy Broadway musicals and don't know this show, buy this recording. You will not be disappointed!

Throughout the 1980s, "We are the Scorpions!" was lead vocalist Klaus Meine's concert-opening battle cry, energizing and readying the faithful in sold-out stadiums for a Teutonic onslaught of vital, sometimes plodding, eardrum-splitting rock anthems. In short, the arena-rock monsters were never a picnic-under-the-stars kind of band ... until Moment of Glory. The new millennium brings the Scorpions full circle, melding in-your-face party anthems like "Rock You Like a Hurricane" (now called "Hurricane 2000") and "Big City Nights" into fully orchestrated concoctions featuring the Berlin Philharmoniker. Where the grandiose likes of "Wind of Change" and "Still Loving You" are obvious choices for such a pairing, and indeed, work well, the "Deadly Sting Suite," with almost unrecognizable instrumental versions of "He's a Woman, She's a Man" and "Dynamite," will likely catch the unknowing fan of classic Scorps off guard. Both Deep Purple and Metallica have used full orchestras to accent their songs with mixed results, and the same goes for the Scorps. There's a fine line between wine-and-cheese classical fare and whiney and cheesy metal. Here the Scorpions teeter, if often gracefully, on that line. --Katherine Turman

4 out of 5 stars Got me hooked on Scorpions.......2007-04-12

I absolutely love the marriage of rock and symphony here. It's gorgeous. The Scorpions take already amazing songs and pump them up an extra notch. A long time ago I heard "Still Loving You" on the radio, not knowing who sung it. It took me years to finally discover the Scorpions. I own two different versions of "Still Loving You," and I far prefer this one to the original. It gives me this yearning inside. The only thing I don't like about this album is the guest vocalists. I love Klaus Meine. He adds an ethereal element to the music, and with the guest vocals, it takes away from the beauty, in my opinion. But don't let that deter you from getting this, because it is so worth it. "Rock You Like a Hurricane" is amazing! It's all amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Moment of Glory.......2007-04-01

With metal music it is always louder is better and this album found one of the coolest ways to make metal louder. Combining the Scorpions with a the Philharmonic creates one of the coolest sounding albums I have ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars [].......2007-03-14

i dont own this album but i have heard the songs off of it and i think their all great and performed well. and also as a side note since i read alot of comments about the guest vocals on "big city nights" but no mention of who: it is Ray Wilson best known for replacing Phill Collins in Genesis and recording the classic Calling all Stations

1 out of 5 stars dynamite!.......2002-10-21

Just when you think the scorpions couldn't do worst...they prove you wrong!
Even Metallica's s&m is better...close but still.
I am sure that it was a great experience to live, for the band and the audience, because that type of event is always unique and can bring strong emotions-unless you have a dumb..s sitting next to you, drinkin' beer and screaming every five minutes Dynamiiiiiiite!!-but on cd...for me it doesn't do it,but it probably is a treasure for those who were there.
Now, I'm not gonna start the debat with DEEP PURPLE and the LSO(1999) but I was there at the Royal Albert Hall and that's why I can understand the concept and the thrill of holding the recording of such concerts...but still DEEP PURPLE 's symphonic album features something that neither Scorpions or Metallica holds...and this is an ORIGINAL PIECE OF MUSIC CREATED FOR A GROUP AND A ORCHESTRA!

5 out of 5 stars Truly a Moment of Glory for the Scorpions!.......2002-07-31

AWESOME is how I would sum up this CD. From the moment I first heard it, I knew I HAD to have it. Buy it! You won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful voices.......2007-07-05

This album has beautiful, timeless songs sung by women with beautiful voices. I love albums with "various artists" because I always get introduced to artists that are new to me.

5 out of 5 stars Great music.......2006-03-22

I first heard this album on a trip to Ireland. The women artists on this album epitomize the soul of a beautiful land--the cd quality is awesome--I recommend to all who want to expand their tastes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Celtic Music by Irish Women.......2005-03-04

I have loved this CD for years. We got it from Ireland but lost it, and then I found it again on Amazon. It is a great introduction to Celtic music and excellent women performers. So many of the songs are simply beautiful, and the women all have different styles and voices. You will find yourself humming this songs for years to come. Excellent CD.

5 out of 5 stars A Woman's Heart--Gorgeous.......2004-12-11

So beautiful. Six amazing celtic singers/musicians collaborate to create one of the most transporting albums ever. You will never be the same after listening to this. It almost has too much emotion-you will be in tears by the end.

From slightly energetic to passionate to mournful to just plain gorgeous, this is a must-have cd. These ladies have such beautiful voices-and for them to share this wonderful music with people all over the world is such a gift.

You don't find music like this that often-don't let it slip out of your hands. This is a transforming journey. You will come out of it healed and a better person. If one cd deserved the term "beautiful and life-changing," it would be this one.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite album, but...........2003-10-14

But one fact must be made clear.

"A Woman's Heart" (the title track) is NOT a Mary Black song!

Eleanor McEvoy wrote and sang "A Woman's Heart". Mary Black only sang backup.

2 out of 5 stars Good group, disappointing collection.......2007-03-27

I'm sorry I cannot endorse the enthusiatic reviews below.

I bought this CD based on the Baltimore Consort's fine, fun collection of Renaissance French tunes (La Rocque 'n' Roll") and my own love of traditional Irish music. Perhaps I have been spoiled by too many Chieftains CDs, but I found only one tune here memorable, or even interesting: Custer LaRue's rendition of "Catty (sic) Magee" in Gaelic.

If you like the Baltimore Consort (and Custer LaRue), get another CD of theirs. If you like traditional Irish music, try another group.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing music..........2006-12-20

Heard one song on the radio and I knew I had to have this cd. Firmly rooted in tradition, and yet surprisingly contemporary. You'll dance, you'll cry, the whole nine yards. What a gifted group of musicians! Wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2005-01-25

This CD is a great collection of Celtic music -- period. The Baltimore Consort has never disappointed with any of their collections; from the strong start with "The Mad Buckgoat" through the final notes of "Billy From Bruff," this one maintains the trend. I strongly recommend that this be part of anyone's Celtic music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Rich, lively and mysterious!.......2002-11-29

This release by the Baltimore Consort is a real treat for both Celtic and Renaissance music lovers! These are some of the best improvisers in the business. Combining wind and stringed instruments of the Renaissance into an English "broken consort", these virtuoso musicians interpret old tunes for a new audience, offering delightful melodies, blown, bowed and sung, over sprightly plucked accompaniments. Their sound is distinctly their own: Renaissance-based, but with liberal touches of folk, bluegrass and even a bit of modern jazz. On this recording you'll hear both spirited and wistful Irish tunes, which were gathered together in published collections from 1724 through 1909. Chris Norman's inventiveness on wooden flute, whistles, bagpipes and bodhran gives an especially Celtic flavor to the renditions. The Baltimore Consort has recorded many CDs for the Dorian label, and all of them are terrific, but this one is my favorite. Not to be missed! Try also "A Trip to Killburn: Playford Tunes and their Ballads" for early hits from the English dance scene.

5 out of 5 stars captures a sense of historic Irish humor, sadness and melody.......2002-01-27

Having just returned from Ireland this last summer, I listened to this CD with renewned interest. I felt that the music reflected the history and music that I experienced on that lovely trip. The Baltimore Consort is a talented and senistive musical group that does an exceptional job of bringing this Irish spirit through in this CD. A culture's music is often a window into it's people's soul and if you listen to this CD I think you will have a glimpse of the grand Irish character.

Since it was released a decade ago, A Woman's Heart, a survey of Irish female singers and instrumentalists, has become one of the best-selling Celtic music albums ever, and volume 2 sold almost as well. The present incarnation reunites the original participants but also includes Irish-American voices. Dolly Parton's "In The Sweet By And By" and Alison Krauss's "Down To The River To Pray" recall an old-time Appalachian tent revival. Accordionist Sharon Shannon and The Wild Bullocks resemble a hip ceili big-band on "The White Strand Sling." The Corrs obsess over an attractive deceiver on "I Know My Love," while Sinead O'Connor is tenderness incarnate on "This Is To Mother You." But Dolores Keane's rendition of "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" is beyond poignant. Her silky alto, flanked by a mournful cello, two male singers, and a distant children's choir, imbues a classic anti-war ballad with renewed urgency and pathos. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars An amazing CD!.......2005-06-27

I was on a tour of Southern Ireland last year, and the tour guide played this as we drove from Dublin to Cork. The first chance I got, I went into a music store and purchased a copy for myself.

The beautiful ballad by Sinead O'Conner is worth the price of admission alone. It is a song to play when you need comforting, and a reminder that everything will indeed get better. The tour guide shared with me that he purchased it for that song alone.

Everytime I play it my mind goes back to that tour and watching the beautiful green hills and small villages of Ireland go by.

Buy this one...you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Moving.......2005-02-05

A friend gave me this last week. It's hard to stop playing it. "This Is To Mother You," "Fields of Gold," and "Down To The River To Pray" are especially moving. I highly recommend this CD.

4 out of 5 stars A Beautifully Satisfying Listening Experience.......2004-09-22

A Woman's Heart 1 and 2 introduced me to a number of wonderful Celtic artists, most notably Dolores Keane. (Like "Mary29" I was also prompted to go out and buy as many of her CD's as I could find.) Though I thoroughly enjoyed all of the songs on "A Decade On" I was completely blown away by "Mystic Lipstick" (written by Christy Moore and sung here by Maura O'Connell), quite possibly the most hauntingly beautiful song I've ever heard. I have to believe the woman in this song is actually Ireland ... "She keeps fools for counsel, she keeps the wig and gown. The cloth and the bloody warfare, the stars and stripes and crown. And still we pray for a better day now, God willing it's for the best. But I've just seen the harp on the penny with a dollar on (...)." The imagery and heartbreak of the lyrics are conveyed perfectly by Maura O'Connell's beautiful interpretation and voice. Worth every penny for this song alone, this is one CD that I'm going to be playing over and over. (And I'll soon be having some Maura O'Connell CD's to keep my Dolores Keane CD's company :-)

4 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary Collection.......2004-05-07

I learnt of this album by listening to RadioCelt.com, and put it on my Christmas wish list on the the buoyant strength of "This is to Mother You" by Sinead O'Connor and the astonishing conviction of "Down to the River to Pray", by Alison Krauss.

I was pleased when my wife gave it to me... until I listened to it. THEN I was completely blown away. The moods range from tender to playful, yet each and every song bears an insight into the sorrows and joys not only of being a woman, but of being a member of the human race. It's an intriguing mix of original work, traditional songs, and covers of other artists' work. Well worth buying!

4 out of 5 stars Graceful.......2004-04-05

I first heard this CD on National Public Radio, possibly on Fresh Air. The pieces they played were beautiful, and on that basis alone, I ordered Vol. 1 and 2 of A Woman's Heart. You will find a wide range of Celtic music, some romantic, some almost to a dance beat. This is trully music from a woman's heart, not trying to out-rock the men. Enjoy it while it is still available. it's so tender, it may go out of style.

5 out of 5 stars "top film scores of the 1960's ~ Percy Faith".......2004-02-18

If you are a collector of Percy Faith, you must run out to your local music store and pick this one up ~ "Plays The Academy Award Winner Born Free and Other Great Movie Themes" (originally released on Columbia Records CS 9450 in 1967) and "Windmills of Your Mind" (originally released on Columbia Records CS 9835 in 1969) ~ following the formula of previous Columbia Records releases featuring Faith's classic style of sweeping strings and haunting arrangements, they've come up with two more winners.

Master of arranging, Faith's formula is so natural in keeping the arrangements fresh and new with his distinctive style ~ his tasteful treatment always highlights the quality of the composition ~ ultimately making them a hit all over again. Remember the days when you could turn on the radio and hear Percy Faith with many familiar pop standards ~ when you put this compact disc on your player, get ready for the "Percy Faith Touch" sprinkled with pure magic over the orchestration and leaves you simply in that unforgettable mood.

Top performances inclusive for the twenty two tracks of film score themes ~ "A MAN AND A WOMAN" (Barouh/Lai), "A TIME FOR LOVE" (Webster/Mandel), "ALFIE"(David/Bacharach), "AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME" (Lionel Bart), "BORN FREE"(John Barry), "CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG" (Richard M. Sherman/Robert B. Sherman), "ELVIRA'S THEME" (Percy Faith), "FOR LOVE OF IVY" (Russell/Quincy Jones), "THEME FROM "THE FOX" (Lalo Schlfrin), "FUNNY GIRL" (Merrill/Styne), "GEORGY GIRL"(Dale/Springfield), "THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER" (Peggy Lee/David Grusin), "HOW ARE THINGS IN GLOCCA MORRA?"(Harburg/Lane), "THE LION IN THE WINTER"(John Barry), "SONG FROM "THE OSCAR" (Evans/Livingston/Percy Faith), "THEME FROM "THE SAND PEPPLES" (Bricusse/Goldsmith), "SOMEWHERE MY LOVE(Lara's Theme from "Dr. Zhivago")"(Webster/Jarre), "STAR" (Cahn/Van Heusen), "THIS IS MY SONG" (Charles Chaplin), "THIS HOTEL" (Keating/Quine), "THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND" and "THE WISHING DOLL" (David/Bernstein) ~ notice two of the selections were composed by the man himself Percy Faith! Impressive line up of top movie songs that will surely satisfy the appetite of all "film-score-buffs" and Percy Faith fans...gotta love it!

While Chalee Tennison's self-titled debut showed potential, it also seemed tentative and suppressed in places, a stigma that sometimes plagues freshman efforts. This time her confidence explodes as she demonstrates her full range. Her twang, attitude, and taut passion make her the closest thing we have to a postmodern Tammy Wynette. The material, including seven songs she cowrote, is consistent and first-rate. Her vamping, flirty "I Ain't" seems almost tongue-in-cheek, while she approaches "I'm Healing," a song of renewal cowritten with Dean Dillon, with an almost religious fervor. She carries that intensity to the optimistic "This Woman's Heart," "Under Your Skin," and "Somebody Save Me." Her approach may seem modern on "Go Back," yet it's actually one of those timeless, sentimental yarns country singers have spun for decades. She tackles heartbreak from two different directions. Anguished denial permeates "What I Tell Myself," while "You Can't Say That" meets it head on. Nothing, not even the blaring, abrasive, and one-dimensional arrangements, gets in her way. --Rich Kienzle

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars hidden star.......2007-01-15

GREAT CD!! Chalee may not be a household name in the music industry, but this CD ranks right up there with all the big names in the music industry.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent second album.......2005-07-25

While matching the quality of her debut album, this album shows Chalee growing in confidence as a songwriter. Chalee only co-wrote one song on her debut album but here she co-wrote seven songs, with Dean Dillon and Rick Carnes among her co-writers. For Chalee to get the opportunity to co-write with men such as these is a great honor.

The standard is set by the opening track (Yes I was) in which Chalee admits to making plenty of mistakes but says she has learned from them. In the next song (Somebody save me), Chalee feels vulnerable, not knowing what to do, but in the third song (I'm healing), she seems to on the way to better times. The fourth song (Making up to you) is about a couple fighting and making up. In the fifth song (This woman's heart), Chalee seems to be happy in love. The sixth track (Go back) is a story about a trucker and a waitress.

In the seventh song song (Break it even) in which Chalee encourages her man to admit that it's all over between them. Then follows a song (We don't have to pray) in which a man leaves a woman but while the woman is begging him to stay but their daughter tells her just to let go. But then comes another song (What I tell myself in which Chalee cannot forget her ex-lover. A song about imminent break-up (You can't say that) precedes a song (I ain't) in which Chalee warns off a potential suitor who isn't looking for true love. The album closes with a song (Under your skin) in which Chalee is very happy in her relationship.

Whether singing ballads or up-tempo songs, Chalee is brilliant. This album didn't give Chalee the breakthrough that she deserved. I feared that it might be the last album that she recorded, such as the ways of the music business, but Chalee has since released another album on a different record label so all hope is not yet lost for her career.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite CD EVER.......2004-04-29

This CD is the best ever recorded. I am a HUGE fan and Chalee not being HUGE is a problem. Her promotional team is terrible. This CD doesn't have a bad song on it. My favorite song ever is "Somebody Save Me." If you are use to being the strong one that every one of your friends and family leans on...this ones for you. I LOVE THIS CD. BUY IT NOW...you won't be disappointed!!!

5 out of 5 stars What a voice!.......2004-04-17

THIS WOMAN'S HEART is an honest effort from Chalee Tennison. It's unfortunate, but she was dropped from Dreamworks after her 2003 album PARADING IN THE RAIN was released. She possesses a true country voice that is lacking today in Nashville. This sophomore set really uses her vocals on some great songs about heartbreak and life. The opening "Yes I Did" is an epiphany of sorts, accepting her past and how it has made her who she is today. Songs like "Somebody Save Me" and "I'm Healing" paint a picture of a woman who is trying to do her best under the circumstances, and these songs ring true with their emotion. "Makin Up With You" and "Break it Even" are fun country songs. The title track is smoldering ballad of love and devotion. "Go Back" is a touching ballad that will tug at your heartstrings, as will the emotional ballad "You Can't Say That". Overall an impressive set of songs!

4 out of 5 stars Nice set of songs.......2003-09-30

Chalee Tennison's second album THIS WOMAN'S HEART is a great album that was overlooked, much like her first. It's a wonder why this woman is not more successful, but I guess that's how Nashville is. You are either too country or not country enough. Chalee has a beautiful, distinct country voice, that compliments the songs well. Her songwriting is often simple, but powerfully emotional at the same time. She shows her playful side on songs like "Makin Up With You", a fun uptempo song where she sings about initiating fights because she enjoys the making up process with her lover. Songs like "Somebody Save Me" and "I'm Healing", suggest she is very human and her emotion rings true on these tracks, about being human and hoping for better days. "Yes I Was" is a nice uptempo to open the album with, where once again she proves she is human and has made mistakes, but has also carried herself with dignity and grace. "Go Back" is a touching ballad that has a nice message. Another highlight for me is the emotional ballad "You Can't Say That". This is nice traditional country, that is still mainstream in its approach. Overall a good cd.

5 out of 5 stars A Woman's Heart (Volume 2).......2005-02-04

The second A Woman's Heart cd is no less tear-provoking, gorgeous, and uplifting than the first. This album is possibly a little less soulful than volume one, but no less enrapturing and involving.

With sixteen beautiful Celtic songs sung by the same group from the first A Woman's Heart, this is not to be missed. It draws you in from the very beginning. The first time I heard this, I wasn't really listening and did not like it much, but the second time it tore my heart out. I couldn't list my favorites if I tried, because it would be all of them. This is one of those rare albums you turn on and just let go-there's nothing to skip over.

It's like a journey that will change your life. Just go down the path of this healing Celtic music-it really will soothe your soul.

5 out of 5 stars Woman's Heart 2.......2003-02-05

I think this album rates up there with the first compilation released a decade ago. The stand out track is Poison Tree by Marcia Howard and Mary Black and it is clear to see why it was lifted as the first single. It is a fine collaboration by two outstanding singers and signifies the powerful forces at work within this album. If you only buy one c.d. this year make sure it's this one and if you have any change left over buy the single for your best friend. This is music as real as it gets.

3 out of 5 stars Hard to improve on perfection.........2001-12-07

I purchased this CD after falling in love with the first Woman's Heart. That was and still is, one of my favorite CD's.

I purchased Woman's Heart 2 and I guess I was expecting it to be as great as the first one. There are some good tracts, but none that stood out that much,in my mind. I seldom play it. A good CD, but not a great one.

5 out of 5 stars Roll on Woman's Heart 3!.......1999-02-02

If you liked the first one you'll equally love this. There's a bit more variety and all the songs grow on you very quicky. Still getting played regulary here in Belfast.

5 out of 5 stars Just as fabulous as A Woman's Heart (1).......1998-09-26

This is a wonderful CD, very relaxing. I loved A Woman's Heart and this is just as great. A wonderful mix of artists, Dolores Keane is the best, as well as Frances Black and Maura O'Connell.
