Vocalist Jeanne Trevor has been a mainstay on the St. Louis music scene since she first began singing in Gaslight Square nightspots in the 60s. Remarkably her well-deserved reputation as one of the most talented and versatile singers in the area, Trevor has never had the opportunity to showcase her skills on a recordinguntil now. Love You Madly, featuring Trevor backed by a fine quartet of musicians... has just been released on the Catalyst label. Love You Madly ...focuses primarily on Trevors ability as a jazz singer but also underscores her wide-ranging repertoire. She touches on classic jazz numbers such as Sleeping Bee, What A Difference a Day Made and Work Song, and she even dips into some Brazilian bossa nova sounds on Anna (featuring Trevor singing the lyrics in Portuguese). She showcases her ability ot rework a standard with a wistful version of When the World Was Young and proves she can belt out the blues with a hot rendition of Early in the Morning. Theres even a touch of gospel, thanks to a soulful version of Give Me Jesus. ...Trevor is pleased with the quality of her long-overdue debut, as she should be. The sound quality is crisp and clean, and theres clearly a strong rapport between Trevor and the musicians.

About the Artist
This talented jazz singer and actress began performing in the '60s at jazz clubs in Gaslight Square. Jeanne Trevor has toured colleges throughout the US, Canada, and Australia. Her 1998 appearance at the International Festival of Jazz at San Luis, Senegal (Africa) and new CD on Catalyst prove Jeannie's star is rising on the international scene. Genius Fusion.......2006-12-08

An amazing amalgam of disco, soul and gospel, this music has transcended its time - although it's immediately identifiable as 70s - and now sounds visionary. It can be a little hysterical, but the 3 discs are helpfully entitled The Madness Begins, The Madness Continues... and Total Insanity... By the time you get to Cellophane's Super Queen you may want to shriek like the banshee on the track. This is very mood-specific music.

Funky, Cool, Amazing & Intelligent Disco.......2006-03-19

This is an amazing collection of soulful, funky and intelligent disco - but don't that word scare you off - it's all fun and great. While people seem to know all the big (and yes, often dumb) pop disco athemns, these funky, soulful and smart tracks seems to have been forgotten. There are some real gems here and in fact, put most of the modern day "classic house" tracks to shame. Basically, these modern tracks with their fancy drum machines cannot hope to touch the soul and vocals on many tracks and of course, the real instrument playing to drive the funky beats.

If you love classic & deep house music - you'll definitely want to hear these in all their glory - the sound quality is great and you can see the tracks the new guys are trying to emulate.

Absolute Necessity!.......2005-02-09

ANYONE who thinks they understand disco from its early days will be pleasantly surprised when they hear this compilation. Future generations o DJs will still learn from this master who achieved cult status and was known as a DJs DJ. This collection is a must-have for any serious collector of early disco music outside of the Saturday Night Fever stuff; this is truly how it was back in New York City during the mid-70s.

Great CD - Received Damaged.......2007-06-27

This CD was to be used for my May 19,2007 bride for her ceremony music.
The CD arrived damaged and Amazon did not have anymore in stock.
Thank God for an understanding bride.

Disappointing.......2004-10-31

A mostly music compilation that sounds like a creative mixing genius put it together. Saddly, the wedding entrance march is sung in German (I think). Some of the music is a little "thin" instead of being "full bodied". The wedding exit march will put listeners to sleep. I wish listening samples had been available or I would have saved the money.

Now that we're on the same page, my review:

Bill Charlap is a classic jazz pianist. Critics from Whitney Balliett to Joseph Hooper have praised Charlap in recent years, and it's all well deserved. Charlap knows intimately the history of jazz piano, and he has clearly assimilated that knowledge into his own unique style.

Charlap has recorded for Blue Note, Criss Cross and Chiaroscuro. But in my opinion, his best work has been for Venus Records. "Love You Madly" is this trio's third release for Venus, after "Blues In the Night" and "The Things We Did Last Summer." (Charlap also released " 'S Wonderful" for Venus under his own name, with Peter Washington and Kenny Washington.)

"Love You Madly" features an entire program of Duke Ellington's music. In fact, it is less a tribute than a celebration. Never does the music aim to copy Ellington, and neither do the musicians simply blow over the changes. Truly, they play the tunes, and they do so with originality. These three musicians adore Ellington's music, and their love is apparent in their performances.

I love this entire disc, but I'll highlight two tracks. "In a Sentimental Mood" took my breath away upon first listen. This is now among my favorite versions of that classic. Charlap's treatment is beautiful. And whoever arranged "C Jam Blues" deserves a raise. It's not unrecognizable, but it's close. The imaginative treatment adopts a deliberately different tone for a tune that is too often simply mugged for its blues changes. This trio succeeds at celebrating Ellington's music, yet they bring their own craftsmanship in full force. They deserve a standing ovation.

It's worth adding that engineer Jim Anderson and the rest of the crew did a remarkable job. Charlap's piano is particularly well represented on this recording. Engineering is like lighting for photography: It's nice to have a pretty model, but professional lighting distinguishes true photographs from simple pictures.

Love You Madly
The music on this CD was recorded at Carnegie Hall on November 14, 1952. During his long career Ellington played many prestigious venues including Newport, Theatre Des Champs Elysees, and The Royal Albert Hall, but perhaps the most important venue for Ellington was Carnegie Hall. Starting in 1943 and continuing for several years Ellington would stage concerts at Carnegie Hall to showcase his compositions and his soloists. Many of these concerts are groundbreaking. However this one is not a groundbreaking concert. The sound quality is only fair, and the only long piece is "The Tatooed Bride." (The version recorded at Ellington's November 13, 1948 Carnegie Hall concert is superior.) There have to be atleast 15 or 20 CD's of Ellington's concerts which are better than this one. For completests only. Dizzy Gilespie shows up on "Body and Soul."
