Andre.......2007-05-17
This album is totally awesome! This is by far my personal favorite Newsboy album, 80's style, alive with keyboard and bass guitar. My long time favorite song is "I'm Not Ashamed" (hence the name of the album). I also like "Dear Shame", "We come Together", "Strong Love", "Love Comes True", and "Boycott Hell". The rest of the songs are cool as well. The only complaint I have about this album is the absence of a guitarist. Too bad Jonathan Geange, a former member, returned to the band late. Although Dave Perkins, an additional musician, was there. Good thing there are many guitarists in the world. I think you would really like this album. Check it out!
Great CD...a must have........2006-02-22
Before this cd, there were 3 cds: in order, Read All About It, Hell Is For Wimps, and Boys Will Be Boyz. However, after Read All About It, they were advised not to continue their musical career. Thank God they didn't. This cd is unbelievable.
The Newsboys took a turn for the better after Boys Will Be Boyz, and they couldn't have taken that turn without Steve Taylor, the brilliant writer who has helped write many of their songs over their long career. With Steve Taylor also came an adoption of the early 90's pop/rock sound, resulting in a drastic makeover of the Newsboys that would define their style as it still is. Another difference in this cd is the lead vocals are shared between Peter Furler and John James, instead of mostly lead by James. Sadly, eventually, the Newsboys would lose James. It's almost as if they tried to prepare you for that truth for 3 cds, as Going Public and Take Me To Your Leader were also vocally shared.
Between the sellable Boys Will Be Boyz and their ridiculously popular Going Public came Not Ashamed. They didn't have Jody Davis at this point, so guitars were not yet there. Some guitars were played, but with Furler on drums, Taylor on bass, Pryor on keys, and James on lead vocals, there was no guitar player. Luckily, they got Davis in time for Going Public, which is musically twice as good as any of their previous albums.
Not Ashamed is musically fine, as far as early 90's music goes, and lyrically genius. For evidence, check out lyrics for Lost The Sky Again, Strong Love, and I Cannot Get You Out Of My System.
Graced with a few slow-ish songs, but mostly great upbeat pop/rock (but more pop than rock) anthems, this album is genius and will get you positive immediately, and after a while will get you hooked on the Newsboys. I would compare it to Going Public or a 90's version of Thrive. This cd is a must have, both lyrically and musically.
VERY VALUABLE CD........2001-12-07
"Not Ashamed" is the second CD released by the Newsboys and it is a very good CD (especially for a sophomore effort). The Newsboys deliver a very exciting marriage of lyrics and music on such songs as the title track (one of the best songs ever recorded by anyone) and their re-do of the classic hymn "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus". All other songs are good as well. Highly Recommended!
My two-bit opinion is ..........2000-11-26
It is not surprising the Newsboys would go this direction with their music. Just like "Boys Will Be Boyz" was a departure of sorts from the sounds you heard on "Hell is For Wimps", "Not Ashamed" is a more studio-sounding effort complete with heavy keyboard and electronic influences. Fortunately, it works!
"I Cannot Get You Out of My System" erupts the listener into a hook-laden sound that draws you into this CD. As soon as the incredible "Not Ashamed" starts, you are practically dancing along with beat ... okay maybe dancing on the inside (I really can't dance!). The CD continues with dance-mix pop/rock, pop, and the wonderful ballad "Where You Belong/Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus". "Upon This Rock" is just too catchy, but "Strong Love" is deeper than you think (just listen to the lyrics). "Dear Shame" rocks, and "Boycott Hell" is a terrific remake of the DeGarmo and Key rock anthem from the 80's. "We Come Together", "Love Comes True", and "Lost the Sky Again" wrap up the ten-song effort nicely.
Any doubts about where the band comes from (and I don't mean Australia either) can be alleviated with "I'm Not Ashamed". In concerts, John James would cite Romans 1:16 before the band exploded into performing this great anthem. As silly as they are on stage and in videos, these gentlemen take their faith very seriously.
Steve Taylor begins a three-album relationship with The Newsboys on "Not Ashamed". He is one talented and funny guy. Enjoy this record kids and adults. It will never age.
Must Have For Newsboys Fans.......2000-02-22
Hey guys - this was the first CD I ever bought and I'm proud of that. I won't lie to you newer Newsboys fans...this is a little different sound from Step Up... or Love Libery Disco but it's amazing. I'm Not Ashamed has that bolt of energy and inspiration to keep you on track and I love "Where You Belong/Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus" - it's a slow (not typical of Newsboys style) medley that just touches my heart every time. This album straight up rocks! Boycott Hell, Upon This Rock, and I Cannot Get You Out Of My System are also GREAT songs

Product Description
Sweet Seraphic Fire brings together two unique bodies of American sacred song: choral compositions from the New England singing-school tradition and the most popular Evangelical Protestant hymn texts in historic American use. In the late eighteenth century the New England singing-school movement produced America's first great sacred-music style, employing several genres of unaccompanied four-part choral compositions with the melody in the lead (tenor) part. The enormous popularity of singing-school music also promoted a canon of hymn texts shared across America's competing Evangelical Protestant denominations. This recording contains neglected masterworks from the New England singing school that also helped to create the American hymn canon. Marking a more recent turn in this process, we have also included some new settings of traditional Evangelical lyrics written by leaders in the revival of singing-school music that has blossomed in the Northeast since 1976. ! Selection of pieces for this recording was determined by correlating "The Norumbega Harmony"--our collection of one hundred six historic New England singing-school compositions and thirty contemporary works in traditional style--with a list of the three hundred most frequently printed hymn texts in America from 1737 to 1960. --Stephen Marini

Greatest Ever.......2006-07-11
This is the best CD ever!!! My friends and I love to listen to it together. I love Gary's African accent. I can't believe Kristen(The lead female singer) is only 16! She has an amazing voice.
Touched.......2006-07-11
Just a week ago I went to youth summer camp with my church Trinity. Peculier People led the worship and did a wonderful job of it! My friend accepted the Lord and I believe the band had a lot to do with it. I don't normally buy CDs but I bought theirs. It's great, touching music that makes you want to sing. Bands like theirs deserve 5 stars.
Pretty promising band.......2005-06-24
I heard their first single "Can I Leave My Head" on the radio, and I liked it, so I bought the album. It's pretty good, although it kind of reminds me of lifehouse. They have one upbeat rock song and the rest of the songs on the album are more soft, mellow songs. I would really give this album 3 1/2 stars.
