60's Magic .......2007-01-06
I always like Pet Clark. But after listening to this newly released set I am a fan all over again. The sound is wonderful and Petula is right on target. If you are reading this review you must already be a Petula Clark fan. You cannot go wrong with this two album set. Actually I am back to buy more. Great listening, you will enjoy it.
Another Outstanding 1960's Petula Clark Compilation.......2002-11-29
Petula Clark was perhaps the most versatile female pop singer. Included on this album are the playful Don't Give Up and Have Another Dream On Me, the sad and beautiful The Ad and Why Can't I Cry. Kiss Me Goodbye, Windmills Of Your Mind, and Happy Heart are other outstanding recordings. Virtually every song on this CD is impeccably interpreted. Good four star quality songs are elevated to outstanding, five star songs when sung by Pet.
The outstanding quality of the incredible quantity of her 60's recordings is astounding, and she also recorded in English, French, German, and Italian. If you are reading this review, you should check out Pet's outstanding foreign language recordings.
Two of the best albums Petula ever recorded.......2002-09-14
Petula recorded these albums in 1968 and 1969, using much the same sound that had brought her so much success in the mid sixties, but pop fans were turning their attention elsewhere so the singles from these albums (Don't give up, Kiss me goodbye and Happy heart) were less successful than their quality deserved. It didn't help that Andy Williams also recorded Happy Heart, and first performed it on a TV show hosted by Petula (who could have stopped him when she heard what he planned to sing, but Petula is not a selfish person).
The other songs include excellent covers of This girl's in love with you, Days, Games people play, My funny valentine, Lovin' things, Let it be me and The windmills of your mind, but what really makes this twofer sparkle are the original but lesser known songs, which are outstanding. Your love is everywhere is a very uplifting song which should have been a huge hit, but (as far as I know) wasn't even released as a single. The ad is a very sad song about somebody who ran away from home, but it's the parents who are left with the sadness, not the runaway.
This twofer is full of songs that may not catch your attention on first play, but each will get to you eventually. The more you play this, the more fascinating it becomes - a real treasure trove of hidden delights.
TWO GREAT ALBUMS TOGETHER MAKE GREATER MUSIC.......2001-01-17
Sixties nostalgia becomes Year 2000 enjoyment! Pet's vast catalogue continues to be released on CD and this double-album combination is a winner. PETULA/THE "PINK" ALBUM has over a handful of winning Trent/Hatch compositions which are mainly catchy like DON'T GIVE UP, HAVE ANOTHER DREAM ON ME and THE SUN SHINES OUT OF YOUR SHOES, but Bacharach and David's THIS GIRL'S IN LOVE WITH YOU and the Reed/Mason, KISS ME GOODBYE are just two of the ballads which are tastefully interpreted by Pet. Add DAYS and THE GOOD LIFE and you have a great album. Much the same can be said about PORTRAIT OF PET - HAPPY HEART. Apart from the well-known title song, highlights are GAMES PEOPLE PLAY, LOVIN' THINGS and SOME. But the contemporary take on MY FUNNY VALENTINE ranks with LET IT BE ME and THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND as the stand-out tracks. To sum up, this is a knock-out release of Pet at her very best.

SUBLIME PETULA CLARK MASTERPIECE~BRAVO!!!.......2005-03-22
Petula Clark grew up from the "hit" period of her brilliant American Recording career of the sixties with this brilliant release that shows her to her finest advantage...opening with the sublime "Happy Heart" it is clear that this is a peerless singer who is at her absolute peak. Lush orchestrations showcase this fine singer and "If Ever You're Lonely" is a superb example and will satisfy those who love extraordinary singers in peak form and settings..."Games People Play" makes the original pale in comparsion and the Pet original "Love Is The Only Thing" is a riveting masterpiece that is incomparable to anything I have ever heard...this is magnificent. Engrossing is "When I Was A Child" which takes one back to another time and "The Ad" is chilling. A classic "My Funny Valentine" is given a definitive reading here that is indescribable and the sixties pop hit "Lovin'Thing" is a winner! A tremendous tour-de-force "When I Give My Heart" is emotionally intense with a fascinating complex arrangement that is stunning and the timeless standard "Let It Be Me" has never sounded better..."Windmills Of Your Mind" is haunting while the Petula original "Some" is thought provoking. Bonus tracks flow into to this classic set of extraordinary performances that stand as Petula Clark's finest ever!!!! Do not miss this classic collection of incredible performances if you enjoy great singers at their ultimate peak...Petula Clark is awesome in this spectacular collection of great songs that are also arranged with total brilliance...thank you Petula Clark for this timeless collection of truly incredible performances!!!!!!!

"PORTRAIT OF PETULA" IS A PICTURE WORTH KEEPING.......2000-09-17
Clark's U.S. career was in high gear when this LP was originally issued in conjunction with her second NBC-TV special (oddly enough, the artwork used are promo shots from her first, highly controversial outing with guest Harry Belafonte, available on VHS under the title "Spectacular!"). Her quasi-hit "Happy Heart" (she graciously allowed guest Andy Williams to perform his version on her show, ironically leading the way for him to have the bigger success with it) leads 16 tracks in all, including the self-penned (under the oft-used pseudonym Al Grant) "Love Is The Only Thing" and "Some"; "When I Was A Child" and "When I Give My Heart", both by composer Clive Westlake, who was responsible for her later single release, "No One Better Than You"; a truncated, rocking version of "Games People Play" (which eventually found its way to the "Simpatico" soundtrack); a haunting cover version of "Windmills Of Your Mind"; and possibly the lovliest arrangement of the Rodgers/Hart classic, "My Funny Valentine," ever produced. Three Hatch/Trent numbers from the "Don't Give Up/Kiss Me Goodbye" LP (fondly known as "The Pink Album") are bonus tracks. Best of all is the addition of "When You Return", which was actually listed on the cover of the original LP but inexplicably not included among the album tracks. Mostly lush arrangements here show the obvious influence of Ernie Freeman and Michel Colombier, who were slowing drawing Clark away from her signature "Downtown" sound and into a musical world of more symphonic sounds.
